Today we wrap up the final part of this fun 2 part series with comedian guest Matt Apodaca! Jayfoxx and Matt freak out with everyone who was at Disneyland while watching the parade fire videos. Together they geek out over tamales at Guisados, share their stoke for Micheladas, and connect over their love for their grandmas. They joke about the possibility of who our future founding fathers' monument could consist of - Malala, Greta Thunberg, MrBeast, and Andrew Tate? Matt lays down some quick quip of wisdom when speaking to folks who act out of pocket, by saying this one phrase, “ You're sounding a little old.” Grab your fave sips and follow along, plus, don't forget to rate, review, and subscribe! In 2019 Benson Tsai quit his job at SpaceX to start... a pizza company. Stellar Pizza isn't just any pizza company, though. Benson and his co-founders used their engineering backgrounds to launch a fully automated robot-powered pizza operation, which eventually attracted the financial support of Jay-Z and is now operating trucks that serve USC and UCLA. Benson joins us to talk about Stellar Pizza's journey so far, how the heck it all works, and what's next on their quest for global pizza domination. Also on this episode... I quickly recap an insane social media interaction I witnessed this week between Eater's Bill Esparza and the owner of Guisados. Food criticism in the social media age is wild... Last week, L.A. County entered the yellow tier, which means expanded indoor capacity for most businesses. L.A. County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer told LAist that this could make a significant difference to bars, who will now “be able to provide indoor service with a limit on their capacity, at 25%. So, a small number of people will be able to be served indoors at bars, it's really at 25%, no more. But that, for some places, will be a very big difference." We check in with bars and restaurants around Southern California - and we want to hear from you if you own or work in the drinks or restaurant industry. How was this past year? Has the yellow tier made a difference? What further loosening of restrictions will make a difference for you? Call us at 866-893-5722. Guests: Frances Michelle Cannon, executive director of the L.A. Armando De La Torre Jr. of local LA stewed taco joint Guisados joins the boys to discuss his least favorite food, the salty bomb that is the olive. After discussing his restaurant, Winston joins Armando in solidarity over their dislike for the bitter, briney fruit while David is too excited to serve them up. In the tasting portion of the episode, they try a variety of olives, a tapenade, a olive infused goat cheese and an ice cream?!
We talk with LA's own Armando de la Torre Jr., co-owner of Guisados, about the history of the restaurant and its signature spicy taco, the chiles torreados taco. Oh, and we eat it, too...and we sweat and cough a lot.
This week we explore the origins of the Boyle Heights neighborhood in Los Angeles, and how Guisados put it on the taco map. Learn about their handmade tortillas, stews and how a father & son turned an empty building into a thriving enterprise. Then, Rob teaches you how to make your own Pork Green Chile Tacos!
This week, Alex and Josh eat all 15 tacos from popular local spot Guisados and debate LA Magazine's raking of said tacos.
Season 2 is underway! Brian Redban is here, and we start out talking about how weird it is that we’ve practically been neighbors for years, and yet somehow have avoided each other at all of the same restaurants. Brian almost met Megan Fox one time thanks to the news, and Josh met Kiersten Dunst one time while driving uber. We’re apparently both old men because we have different favorite neighborhood diners. We talk about our favorite celebrities, and why sometimes meeting your heroes can be disappointing. We talk about meeting at Ike’s Love & Sandwiches, and our visit to local Taco Shop, Guisados. We share our favorite appliances, and our dream kitchens. We talk about growing up and learning about diversity, and selling out for women’s attention. There's also the usual comedy talk, and we play the part of food historians pretty well in this episode. Enjoy!
