This week on The Chrome Cast, our discussion largely circles around the imminent arrival of everyone's favorite Chrome OS tablet: the Lenovo Chromebook Duet. With signs pointing towards a release in the next few weeks, we're increasingly excited by what seems more and more likely to be a game-changing device. From the sheer portability factor to it's on-the-go productivity, we really think this tablet will introduce many new usability scenarios to the Chrome OS scene that we've simply not had before. We also talk a bit about Google's messy messaging situation and the recent un-branding of the G Suite Hangouts Meet and Hangouts Chat. With the removal of Hangouts from the equation, it seems likely the consumer-facing version of the aging messenger is on its final legs. Finally, we also discuss the arrival of PWA installs on Chromebooks via the Google Play Store and what makes this new app type both highly unique and extremely flexible. NOTABLE LINKS This new camera feature will be very useful for the Lenovo Chromebook Duet The Lenovo Chromebook Duet will be more widely-available than most Lenovo Chromebook Duet tablet listings show up at multiple resellers The Lenovo Duet Chromebook will launch in at least these 5 markets How the Play Store could become Google's one-stop-shop for all your Chromebook apps YouTube TV is another Chromebook PWA you can install directly from the Play Store Twitter's Google Play Store app now installs the PWA by default when on a Chromebook Google Meet is adding email integration, Zoom-like grid view and more Nod extension brings simple, silent reactions to your Google Meet rooms Hangouts takes another step towards the Google Graveyard --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/chromeunboxed/support

In this episode of BTLR, we start off the news by poking a little fun at Google, as they are notorious for changing their services and features up at the drop of a hat, in this specific case we're talking about how Hangouts Meet became Google Meet, and Hangouts Chat was re-re-branded Google Chat. We're also discussing Samsung and their decision to kill off their own proprietary digital assistant S Voice. And of course a day can't go by where we can't talk about how the Coronavirus pandemic is effecting literally everything, in this case we're discussing how Apple and Google are apparently teaming up to create a contact tracing tool to track who has the virus, who they gave it to, and who gave it to them. And finally, (Pay no attention to the thumbnail of this episode, there was a slight mistake there), we'll be talking about the IRS setting up a forthcoming website to help you track where your stimulus payment is. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Mark Mirchandani is our Mark this week, joining new host Michelle Casbon in a recap of their favorite things at Next! The main story this episode is Cloud Run, and Gabi and Mark met up with Steren Giannini and Ryan Gregg at Cloud Next to learn more about it. Announced at Next, Cloud Run brings serverless to containers! It offers great options and security, and the client only pays for what they use. With containers, developers can use any language, any library, any software, anything! Two versions of Cloud Run were released last week. Cloud Run is the fully managed, hosted service for running serverless containers. The second version, Cloud Run GKE, provides a lot of the same benefits, but runs the compute inside your Kubernetes container. It’s easy to move between the two if your needs change as well. Steren Giannini Steren is a Product Manager in the Google Cloud Platform serverless team. He graduated from École Centrale Lyon, France and then was CTO of a startup that created mobile and multi-device solutions. After joining Google, Steren managed Stackdriver Error Reporting, Node.js on App Engine, and Cloud Run. Ryan Gregg Ryan is a product manager at Google, working on Knative and Cloud Run. He has over 15 years experience working with developers on building and extending platforms and is passionate about great documentation and reducing developer toil. After more than a decade of working on enterprise software platforms and cloud solutions at Microsoft, he joined Google to work on Knative and building great new experiences for serverless and Kubernetes. Welcome to episode 130 of the EdTech Situation Room from April 10, 2019, where technology news meets educational analysis. This week Jason Neiffer (@techsavvyteach) and Wesley Fryer (@wfryer) discussed YouTube's challenges moderating objectionable content, the human costs of that content moderation, and the incredibly hostile digital infrastructure which is now online amplifying that content for apparently malicious purposes. HUD's new lawsuit against Facebook for illegally targeted housing advertisements, and privacy and security challenges posted by pre-installed apps on Android were also discussed. Exciting recent Google announcements were highlighted including native editing of MS Office documents via Google Docs, forthcoming 3rd party add-ons to GSuite, and improvements to Hangouts Chat now integrated with Gmail were also discussed. From Chromebook land, the exciting announcement of a new #MadeByGoogle Chromebook, and Apple's expected "reinvention" of MagSafe power adapters for USB-C devices were explored. Microsoft's announced closure of its eBook store, the futuristic and arguably dystopian U.S. Army version of Microsoft's Hololens platform, an intriguing SxSW musical performance utilizing sensorware, and the "Share No Evil" Chrome extension created in response to the mass shooting in Christchurch, New Zealand were topics rounding out the show. Geeks of the week included resources for Wes' upcoming ATLIS workshop "Filtering the ExoFlood," the free eBook "Web Literacy for Student Fact-Checkers," Gobo.social, and the 2019 Webby's. In this TalkingHeadz, Dave and Evan hangout with Scott Johnston, Director of Product Management at Google. Among Scott's responsibilities are the communications and collaboration applications within G Suite which includes Hangouts Meet, Hangouts Chat, and Google Voice. We discuss all of those as well as other things G including new leadership, Chromebooks and the Jamboard. 2019 is expected to be a big year for Google with regards to enterprise communications and collaboration. The Hangouts Classic app will be replaced with two separate apps: Hangouts Meet (for conferencing) and Hangouts Chat (for messaging). Additionally, Google will be launching Google Voice as an integrated, optional UCaaS service. Google has quietly become not only an enterprise vendor, but a comprehensive one. The anchors are Google Cloud services for workloads and G Suite for workflow or office productivity. G Suite communications includes Hangouts and Voice. Google also has a number of additional communications services including Google AI for Contact Centers, room systems for conferencing, Duplex chatbots, Google Fi wireless service, and an arsenal of endpoints (Chrome browser, ChromeOS, and Android).

Spotify, the world’s largest music streaming service, has filed for an initial public offering today. The Sweden-based company has more than 71 million paying users as of December 2017. The company also enjoys an overall user base that includes ad-supported free listeners of 159 million, far outpacing the competition from Apple, Google, Tidal, and others. Spotify will trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol SPOT. According to CNBC, the price of Spotify shares traded on private markets indicate the company could be worth as much as $23 billion. Another slightly surprising winner from the IPO: Sony Music. The world’s second-biggest music label owns 5.7 percent of Spotify's shares. At that same $20 billion valuation, that stake would be worth $1.1 billion.
