Kewaunee, Hayward, West Allis and Wausau were the gathering points for the Joint Finance Committees "Road Show", and turnout was strong - especially in Wausau. Wisconsin Senator Patrick Testin (R-Stevens Point) is the current chair of the Senate Agriculture and Revenue committee, and a member of the JFC. He tells Pam Jahnke about some of the programs that were singled out by attendees during the town hall conversations. Why does Senator Cory Booker's filibuster this week matter and how is it connected to the Wisconsin election this Tuesday? We take a deep dive in the epic State Supreme Court election that saw a landslide win for Citizen Action endorsed Susan Crawford. The victory was essential to the future of the state with the balance of the court at stake. However, we discuss our concern with the current playbook that clearly can deliver progressive court candidate victories, but with high spending shit shows where virtually all paid communication is trashy crime and sexual predator ads that debase and erode the credibility of the court, a vital pillar of our democracy. And what about Elon? We review the first Joint Finance Committee public hearing on the State Budget this Wednesday and heads to West Allis' State Fair Park this Friday. At the hearing, support for funding Medicaid and increasing public education dollars dominated public testimony. We welcome Milwaukee County Supervisor Anne O'Connor to discuss her support for the Milwaukee County Climate Action Plan which is up for a vote in April and her opposition to the proposed We Energies gas plants that are at odds with the County's Climate plan goals.

We review news that the state supreme court race will shatter all spending records for the prized judicial seat that will determine control of the state' highest court. Ben Jarboe gets an update on one senator's perspective and objectives. Senator Brad Pfaff grew up in agriculture and was temporary Secretary of Agriculture at WDATCP. Stu Muck breaks down what clothes you'll need to stay warm. Sandy Madland is a first generation dairy farmer that shares her voice on the Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin board of directors. Madland farms outside of Lyndon Station but grew up in the West Allis area - removed from agriculture. She tells Charitee Seebecker about the ongoing programs farmers and consumers may notice that elevate awareness of Wisconsin dairy including the current campaign with the WIAA sporting events. Their identity is tied with the farm, the livestock, the daily tasks they perform and it can be tough to decouple from all that. Stephanie Hoff takes a closer look at how to deal with those challenges, and what options might work with University of Missouri Extension Farm Transition Specialist Wesley Tucker. Tucker was a guest at the Professional Dairy Producers annual business meeting in Madison. He says he helps explain ways individuals can maintain their identity as a farmer after "retirement" by transitioning to a role as an advisor/coach/mentor. They may even have more value in this position than when they were calling the shots. It's rare for a farmer to be able to let go of the farm completely. I should have taken today off. My productivity is at an all-time low…and I went to bed at halftime. Needless to say, most of our morning revolved around recapping yesterday's Super Bowl. We talked about the National Anthem, Taylor Swift getting booed, the halftime show, the commercials, the game, and some of the prop bets. Also, a cool story about a lifelong Eagles fan who got to see the game in person, and the group of old dudes that have been to every single Super Bowl were back at it this year. In actual news, the President announced that more tariffs are on the way today, allegations of racism in West Allis, the Boy Scouts of America have officially changed their name, and barricades have been placed outside schools in PdC after a verbal threat was made last week. Elsewhere in sports, the Bucks got a win yesterday without Giannis, who is going to be sidelined through the All-Star break. The Badgers won on Saturday, and it looks like Aaron Rodgers' time as a New York Jet is coming to an end. We also talked about this weekend's NASCAR HOF induction, and a kid who should have won a bunch of money during halftime of a recent UMASS game almost got screwed over. 2nd Floor Sarah stopped by to chat with us about her Super Bowl party, and to let us know what's happening in our area this week. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had a couple of idiots who got lost…asked some cops for directions…and got busted for drug possession. Plus, a dude who won a free cruise ended up getting the flu on board the ship & then got a bill for almost $50,000 for his medical treatment while at sea. Harris is a far better campaigner than Joe Biden had been in recent months, bringing some needed energy to the ticket. Yet she faces skepticism from many Midwestern voters.

The Republican Party held its nominating convention a week ago in Milwaukee, formally nominating former President Donald Trump as the standard-bearer for the GOP, and also his vice-presidential pick, Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH). Just before the convention kicked off, Trump was the target of an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania. The GOP convention was unique in having the former president there over all days of the event. But since the convention concluded, President Joe Biden has announced that he will not be standing for re-election, and immediately endorsed his vice president, Kamala Harris, to become the Democratic nominee for president. As we are taping this podcast on Wednesday, July 24th, Vice President Kamala Harris looks like the presumptive Democratic nominee, about 4 weeks before the Democratic convention. It has been a head spinning two weeks of politics in the United States and the dynamics and focus of the presidential race has shifted dramatically. To take stock of where the race stands about 100 days out, we have two experts on the presidency. Dr. Meena Bose is the Executive Dean for Public Policy and Public Service Programs at the Peter S. Kalikow School of Government, Public Policy and International Affairs and director of the Peter S. Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency, both at Hofstra University. Dr. Daniel E. Ponder is the L.E. Meador Professor of Political Science and Director of the Meador Center for Politics and Citizenship at Drury University. Meena and Dan are the co-editors OF a new De Gruyter Series in Presidential Politics, Leadership, and Policy Making. The first volume is Evaluating the Obama Presidency: From Transformational Goals to Governing Realities (De Gruyter, 2024) edited by Meena Bose and Paul Fritz. It includes a chapter on presidential leverage and Obama's decision making on Syria by Dan Ponder and Jeff VanDenBerg.
