On this week's show we ask, how satisfied are you with your streaming service providers? We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: Prime Video has 88% of customers on ad-supported plans Amazon gearing up to roll out new Fire TV OS on streaming player Roku announces 2 new streaming sticks starting at just $30 Max begins password-sharing crackdown Other: Aiwa: Then and Now State of Streaming: Satisfaction with streaming providers (The Streamable) How are Americans really feeling about their streaming services? Recently, we surveyed nearly 1,500 cord-cutters to get a clearer picture of how people are watching, what they're paying, and which services they are most satisfied with. The results reveal shifting habits in a saturated streaming market and point to what matters most as we speed right through 2025. Full article here… Streaming services people use: YouTube TV: 30% Hulu + Live TV: 10% Sling TV: 7% DIRECTV STREAM – 6% Fubo: 3% Philo: 3% DIRECTV via internet: 2% Dish: 2% None of the above: 38% Are subscribers satisfied? Despite rising subscription costs and service fragmentation, 58% of users are satisfied with their streaming experience, 33% are neutral, and only 9% are dissatisfied. This high satisfaction rate, despite 2024's price hikes and content reshuffles, is likely due to improved app performance, better device compatibility, and more tailored subscription options. How many services do people use? In 2025, streaming is typically a multi-platform experience: 49% of households subscribe to 2-4 services, 38% use 5 or more, and only 12% stick to a single service. Content fragmentation drives users to stack subscriptions for their favorite shows and sports, a shift from the cable era, making multiple subscriptions the norm for convenience. Monthly spending on streaming The typical streaming bill has surged, with 35% of users spending $50-$100 monthly, often on live TV and multiple on-demand subscriptions. Additionally, 26% spend over $100, likely on premium plans or add-ons, while only 19% keep costs at $25 or less by limiting subscriptions or using free trials. Streaming costs and complexity now rival traditional cable bills. Bundled benefits Bundling is a popular cost-saving strategy, with 31% of respondents accessing streaming through Amazon Prime and 14% via phone bills, often getting discounted or free access to platforms like Netflix or Disney+. However, 36% prefer direct subscriptions or find their preferred platforms aren't bundled, showing bundling is common but not universal. Churn vs. loyalty In 2025, 70% of users showed strong loyalty to their existing services, indicating platform stickiness despite subscription fatigue. However, 50% canceled at least one streaming service in 2024, driven by cyclical pauses, price hikes, or lack of content. Unlike cable, streaming subscriptions are easily canceled, leading to dynamic, seasonal churn, with some users returning for new content. What matters most? Here are the features that matter most to users: Affordable pricing Access to local channels Live sports availability Device compatibility (smart TVs, streaming sticks, etc.) Channel variety Reliable streaming quality DVR functionality Support for 4K resolution and surround sound (less critical) Preferred streaming devices Smart TVs are the top choice for streaming, used by 56% of viewers, followed by Roku devices at 44%, then Fire TV, Apple TV, and web/mobile viewing. This highlights a trend toward living room, lean-back streaming experiences over desktop viewing, driven by widespread smart TV adoption and improved built-in apps.

Step up to the plate with us this week as we tackle the complex maze of baseball streaming. We cover the latest baseball streaming news with Fubo adding RSNs, Hulu+ Live TV adding the MLB Network, and discuss the terrible fan experience with some MLB teams requiring fans to access five different networks to stream games. We also highlight other sports news, including Peacock's exclusive streaming deal for the NFL's first-ever regular-season game in Brazil and Amazon's sublicensing deal with Viaplay to broadcast 38 live Premier League games a season in Sweden and Denmark. We break down the launch of Hulu on Disney+ in the U.S. for Disney bundled subscribers, and why we think the report that YouTube TV will reach profitability in 2024 isn't accurate. Finally, we debunk the ridiculous report suggesting that because Bitmovin's live encoder is now deployed on Akamai, it "raises M&A eyebrows" for them to be acquired. Calculating who is set to lose the most in the showdown between Disney and Charter is complex. Disney could lose contract fees for Charter's 15 million subscribers, but the dispute is also driving a huge jump in Hulu + Live TV subs. Disney owns 67% of Hulu, but will also soon renegotiate ownership with Comcast. Plus, AI is increasingly playing a role in sports, most recently in this year's U.S. Open. The USTA has been using IBM's Watson AI to provide commentary, working to translate it into every possible language, and has even correctly forecast who's most likely to win a match.
This week we expose the flawed comparisons of bundled streaming services to pay TV, with Nielsen improperly comparing linear TV to YouTube, but excluding vMVPD services like Sling TV and Hulu + Live TV in their ratings. We also break down the new NFL Sunday Ticket bundle with Max, new student pricing, and multi-view combinations, and speculate on the future potential for platform customization and interactive features available on mobile and TV. Wrapping up our discussion, we discuss the potential of streaming services to reach profitability and the possible future where pay TV operators stop making profits from pay TV services.
This week we break down Disney's recent financials and news from their earnings including their DTC revenue and losses; subscriber churn, the announcement of higher pricing for their ad-free tiers, ESPN+ and Hulu + Live TV, as well as their plans to crack down on password sharing next year. We also detail the numbers from other earnings including Paramount's addition of 700,000 Paramount + subs, Sling TV's loss of 97,000 subs, and Vizio's AVOD revenue of $142.3M, which was up 28% from the previous year. Also discussed is the latest sports streaming news across the industry including the report that Warner Bros. We discuss Never Have I Ever, a teen romcom drama about an Indian American girl, and Thoroughbreds, a dark comedy thriller about two white teen girls up to no good. 05:05 Never Have I Ever, streaming on Netflix, is strongest when it goes beyond the silly high school tropes to touch on issues of grief, family, and mental health. 22:48 Thoroughbreds, available on Hulu + Live TV or on VOD, is an unexpectedly clever portrait of privilege and sociopathy. 37:49 Plus, culture notes about the Olympics that we're not watching except through Olympic Village TikTok. While I am waiting for the AT&T TV streaming device to show up, I am using the AT&T TV app on my apple TV to watch. I have found a big difference between the AT&T TV service and Hulu Live TV. It could be a deal breaker
The guys talk about which streaming services they use, the eventual consolidation under HBO Max, Hulu Live TV vs YouTube TV, Amazon not playing nice with certain streaming apps/services, a brief history of ISPs and cable providers in Rhode Island, internet should be a utility, unintended consequences of original content, TV programming is antiquated, too many providers not enough time.

TESLA UPDATE LETS DRIVERS STREAM SPOTIFY, NETFLIX, AND YOUTUBE "On Thursday, the latest over-the-air software update, known as Version 10, started rolling out to Tesla owners. The update packs in a lot of fun features, mostly for when the car is parked or charging." reports the tech site Mashable: "Games like Cuphead are coming to the Tesla Arcade and a new "Tesla Theater" application houses all the streaming video options. Caraoke is like it sounds: a karaoke interface with lyrics on the screen so you can belt out your favorite tunes. A Summon update will let you "summon" your car from a parking spot if it's in your line of sight. This is only available for drivers who have the Full Self-Driving version or Enhanced Autopilot package. Other updates will streamline Sentry mode, and the new mysteriously named "Joe mode" lets you lower the volume for parking chimes and other alerts if you have a sleeping baby in the car. The mobile Tesla app that lets you control the climate, unlock the car, and other options was also updated and now you'll be able to remote-control windows on the Model 3 and Model X from the app. " ZDNet reports: "Along with Netflix, Tesla drivers will be able to view content from YouTube, and Hulu or Hulu + Live TV from the dash console. Tesla's self-driving capabilities aren't yet advanced enough for drivers to switch off and watch movies, and thankfully the company notes that you can "watch your favorite shows, movies and content right from your car while parked". The company says customers have praised summon it for its convenience after shopping, but notes that "those using Smart Summon must remain responsible for the car and monitor it and its surroundings at all times". The feature is available to drivers when the car is within their line of sight. Owners of the Model 3 Standard Range Plus and Standard Range vehicles will now able to stream Spotify, TuneIn, and Slacker when connected to Wi-Fi." And The Verge reports: "video recordings captured when Teslas are in their self-protect Sentry Mode are now stored in a separate folder from other camera content. A new “Joe Mode” is meant to avoid waking up sleeping passengers by reducing the volume of certain car chimes and alerts. And the Tesla mobile app can do a few more things and control even more aspects of the car remotely (like the windows)." SlashGear on China: "Tesla customers in China will soon get iQiyi and Tencent Video access in the car with more services promised in the future." Tesla says: "“We’re expanding our music and audio platform to enable Spotify Premium account access in all supported markets – one of the most requested features from Tesla owners. This will be in addition to Slacker Radio and TuneIn, which are also available in Tesla vehicles.”" If you pause the video which Tesla put online today, there's Car Wash Mode. But what is that? And on turorials: "Additionally, all customers will have access to Tesla tutorial videos to learn more about their vehicle." In fact if you play that YouTube video frame by frame it says this: Voice Commands Driving Visualization Maps Improvements Sentry Mode Improvements Software Update Improvements Application Launcher Updates YouTube Car Wash Mode Caraoke Spotify Cuphead Feeling Lucky Tesla Theater TESLA JUMPS ON REPORT MUSK AIMS TO DELIVER RECORD 100,000 CARS THIS QUARTER "Shares of Tesla jumped more than 5% after Electrek, an electric vehicle news website, reported that CEO Elon Musk said the company “has a shot” at delivering 100,000 cars this quarter, which would be a new record." says CNBC.com: "Musk wrote in the email: “We have a shot at achieving our first 100,000 vehicle delivery quarter, which is an incredibly exciting milestone for our company!” The CEO also reportedly added, “The challenge is making sure that we have the right car variants in the right locations and rallying as much as our company resources as possible to help with the end of the quarter deliveries.” The automaker is expected to report its quarterly vehicle deliveries in the next few days." https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/26/tesla-jumps-on-report-musk-aims-to-deliver-100000-cars-this-quarter.html NORWEGIAN GAS STATION BECOMES FIRST IN WORLD TO REPLACE ALL PUMPS WITH ELECTRIC CHARGERS "Gas station" may no longer be an accurate description for a Circle K refueling outlet in Oslo, Norway, after it became the first in the world to replace all gas pumps with electric car chargers earlier this week." writes Newsweek: "The Oslo Circle K is one of the company's 16,000 gas stations around the world, but this location is the only one from any company to completely convert to electric fueling. The conversion to electric fuel "fast chargers" came at the same time as the United Nations Climate Action Summit was taking place this week in New York. Christina Bu, secretary general of the Norwegian Electric Car Association, said in a press release that it "was extra fun to highlight this" at the same time world leaders were discussing climate change." https://www.newsweek.com/norwegian-gas-station-becomes-first-world-replace-all-pumps-electric-chargers-1461714 FIRST GAS STATION IN AMERICA TO DITCH OIL FOR 100% ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING "The first gas station in the U.S. that has been completely transitioned from a petroleum station to exclusively charging EVs opened Thursday in Takoma Park, Maryland." says CNBC.com: "RS Automotives, the local gas station, has been around since 1958. Depeswar Doley, owner of the station since 1997, said he was already unhappy with the way oil and gasoline companies structure contracts — such as limiting the use of multiple suppliers, including clauses that extend contracts when a certain volume of sales is not met and limiting maintenance support. These business factors already were pushing him to consider other options. A nudge from his daughter was the final step in convincing Doley to make the switch to EV charging. There are more than 20,700 registered EVs in Maryland, and the area also has an electric taxi service in need of more chargers for their business. The gas station conversion was jointly funded by the Electric Vehicle Institute and the Maryland Energy Administration, which provided a grant of $786,000." https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/26/first-gas-station-to-ditch-oil-for-electric-vehicle-charging-now-open.html THE HYUNDAI VELOSTER N ETCR HAS HIT THE TRACK AND IT SOUNDS JUST LIKE A STAR WARS SHIP "Hyundai Motorsport hit the Hungaroring with its all-electric Veloster N to get the machine primed and ready for next year’s ETCR racing series. And man does it sound freakin’ cool." says Jalopnik: The Veloster N has a much higher pitch to its powertrain than fellow EV series Formula E. Both have that whistle-y quality that’s common to an electric car as opposed to the grumble of a combustion engine" https://jalopnik.com/the-hyundai-veloster-n-etcr-has-hit-the-track-and-it-so-1838488781 MASERATI'S BIG ELECTRIC PUSH: ALL FUTURE MODELS WILL BE EV OR HYBRID "Maserati today confirmed that it was electrifying its whole range - from sports cars to saloons and crossovers. The company is turning its Italian HQ into an electric car centre of excellence, it says, confirming that all future Masers will be made in Italy." writes Tim Pollard for Car Magazine: "Maserati revealed that every new model in the pipeline will be either hybrid or full battery electric, and vowed that the switch from oil to volts wouldn't dent its commitment to 'innovation and the high performance embedded in the brand’s DNA.' It also committed to 'extended range and ultra-fast charging capabilities,' perhaps made easier by the brand's relatively late arrival into the electric car space." Follow Tim at @TimPollardCars https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/electric/maserati/ YOU CAN NOW BUY A PLUG-IN HYBRID BENTLEY BENTAYGA "Bentley's new Bentayga plug-in hybrid is now on sale in the UK with prices starting from a little over £133,000." reports Motor1.com: "The luxury 4x4 is described by its manufacturer as “the world’s first true electrified luxury car”, and offers an all-electric range of around 24 miles on the new and more stringent WLTP efficiency test. That’s provided by a 126 bhp electric motor, which is also used to eliminate turbo lag, while the power comes from a high-voltage battery that can be recharged in two-and-a-half hours." https://uk.motor1.com/news/373273/bentley-bentayga-phev-pricing-uk/ AUSTRALIA IS GETTING MORE ULTRA-RAPID CHARGING "Chargefox, which claims to be Australia’s largest electric vehicle (EV) charging network, is increasing the number of ultra-rapid EV chargers it has in the country." as per Business insider Autralia: "The company revealed the target locations for all 22 sites in the first phase of its ultra-rapid EV charging network. It is part of Chargefox’s broader goal to have more than 100 ultra-rapid charging sites in the country. Chargefox already has 5 ultra-rapid stations open in, with 17 more in the works. All 22 will connect Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, with additional sites in Western Australia and Tasmania." WATCH THE 258MPH RIMAC C_TWO CRASH FIVE TIMES "WARNING: the following video contains footage that some viewers may find distressing. And by some viewers, likely it’ll be all of you. That’s because this video contains footage of the £1.5m+ Rimac C_Two hypercar crashing. A lot. Five times, in fact. It’s all a part of the C_Two’s homologation process to ensure it’ll be safe and road-legal across the globe. Still, five times." says Top Gear: "No lie, it’s never easy watching a super-rare, very desirable 1,887bhp self-driving electric hypercar being squished against some very solid things. Rimac reckons on 0-62mph in a frankly terrifying 1.97s, 0-100mph in 4.3s, a quarter mile time of 9.1s and 0-186mph in 11.8s." https://www.topgear.com/car-news/crash/watch-258mph-rimac-ctwo-crash-five-times QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… What do you want to hear on this podcast? A brief summary of this episode
We get at the heart of why Sling TV has been so successful and it starts with the fact they were the first to offer cable networks to the streaming video world. Meanwhile, they remain very cost effective (cheap) despite increased competition from DirecTV Now, Hulu Live TV, YouTube TV and, Sony Playstation Vue.Sling TV's entry level Orange package ($20 per month) offers one stream at a time, while its $25 Sling Blue includes three streams at once and its $40 Orange + Blue service allows four streams at once.

Hulu Live TV Beta This week Hulu released their paid beta for live TV. That means you have the privilege of paying $40 a month to help them find their bugs. But in all honesty it's actually pretty good minus a few user interface issues that should get buzzed out with feedback from everyone paying $40 a month. The interface was intuitive and made sense. Hulu is already somewhat organized around TV shows, so it feels like a bit of an app-based DVR. Add live content behind that and it simply feels like it belongs there. You don't feel like you have two separate sides to the same app. Live TV flowed seamlessly in the interface. Pricing isn't too bad. You get 50+ channels for $40. They have a good selection but some channels are missing. There is no AMC or Viacom, and Discovery networks. You do get locals in in LA we get even get some independents but no CW. Included in the price is the basic Hulu subscription so you can watch programs through the Hulu app with commercials. For an additional $3 you can get the commercial free version of Hulu. That makes up for some of the limitations of the DVR which we talk about later. The only “Pay” channel they have is Showtime and that will cost you an additional $9. Hulu's guide is pretty innovative but it takes getting used to. You can decide what content (genre) you are interested in and then select live. The guide will then show you what is on right now. Or you can just say show me what's available regardless if it's live and you have way more options. At that point it hit us! Who cares when it aired if I can chose when I want to watch it. You can pause fast forward and rewind shows and some allow you to start at the beginning even if you started watching mid show. On shows that are streamed you can't skip commercials. At this point in time you can pause and move the playhead to anywhere you want in the program but if a commercial starts you are stuck for the duration. When it comes to the DVR you get some basic functionality included in the monthly service fee. You have a 50 hour limit and you can't skip through ads. There is no word as to how long you can keep your recordings for. If you want full DVR capability you need to pony up $14.95 a month. That also gets you 200 hours of record time. But you can skip content that is recorded. If the show is available through the network streaming you will get the streamed version with non-skippable ads. But we found the ads to be about a minute and a half. If you paid the extra three dollars for no commercials this becomes the best of both worlds! You don't use any DVR space and you don't even have to skip commercials. Pay the $3! Two streams are included with your monthly fee but you can go unlimited (at least while you are at home) for an additional $14.95. This add-on gets you three streams when you are away from home. At launch Hulu live supports iPhones and iPads, Android phones and tablets, Xbox One, AppleTV 4, and Chromecast. Support is on the way for FireTV and stick, Roku, Samsung TVs and Blu-ray Players, as well as Macs and PCs. In all, this is a very good start and we can't wait to see what more competition will do to this space!
