Wendell Barnhouse recalls the pressure of trying to find the right words in the immediate aftermath of the famous Duke-Kentucky basketball game. The overwhelming magnitude felt on press row at that 1992 NCAA tournament classic still lingers. That's one of many anecdotes Wendell shares in this episode from his three-plus decades as a national college basketball and football writer. Hear about traveling to 27 cities in one season, how Bob Knight made a telephone jump, why Bill Snyder made a call with a surprising reaction, and where Wendell had to write from as a Fiesta Bowl erupted with Boise State's trick plays. Wendell's tales from his 50 years in the business also include typewriters, an intimidating first Major League Baseball game, waging an old-fashioned newspaper war alongside legendary sports editor Dave Smith, and finding himself in a unique argument with the copy desk on deadline. Barnhouse was a media fixture on the national scene of college sports for more than 30 years, beginning in the mid-1980s. After three years as assistant sports editor at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Wendell became that newspaper's national college basketball writer during the 1985-86 season, which concluded with the Final Four being held in Dallas. He added national college football to his duties in 1994 and covered both beats – as well as writing a television-radio column – until his 25 years at the Star-Telegram ended in 2008 with the acceptance of a buyout. Wendell served as president of the United States Basketball Writers Association in 1995. He covered 26 Final Fours, 343 NCAA men's tournament games, two women's Final Fours, and 14 college football national championship games.   Wendell grew up in Columbia, Missouri, where his first journalism job was a summer part-time gig at the Columbia Daily Tribune in 1972. A year later, he was hired as the sports editor (one-person staff) at the Hannibal (Mo.) Courier-Post. Wendell spent four years as a sports reporter for the Quincy (Ill.) Herald-Whig beginning in 1974. He joined the sports copy desk at the Arizona Daily Star in 1979 for one year, then spent 18 months at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, where he served as assistant sports editor. He moved to Texas in 1981 to edit sports copy and layout pages for the Dallas Morning News. That led to his job in 1983 at the Fort Worth-Star Telegram, where he eventually returned to writing. Wendell worked as a correspondent (writer, TV/video host) for the Big 12 Conference from 2008 until 2015. He then freelanced for seven years, including one season of covering college basketball for The Athletic, before retiring in 2022.   Follow him on Twitter: @WBBarnhouse Learn more about your ad choices. This Home Health Revealed episode takes place ON THE ROAD! Michael Greenlee and Hannah Vale set up the recording booth in the middle of the Missouri Alliance for Home Care Annual Conference to hear from home health leaders and committee members who are in the trenches of home health. Hear their challenges and some of the creative solutions they are using to meet those challenges. Brooke Kendrick with NorthEast Independent Living of Hannibal Missouri is on the task force at the Missouri Alliance for HomeCare. She discusses leadership challenges that come with staffing and how her agency is taking advantage of state regs that have lowered initial training requirements. She is working to meet increasing demands and get workers in homes quicker. Her agency has also been able to raise wages to attract and retain staff. Her commitment to the industry is making a difference in the care offered in Missouri. Carol Hudspeth from MAHC (Missouri Alliance for Home Care) gives insight into the consideration and prep it takes to create the experience for the annual conference. MAHC members have access to educational opportunities and advocacy. Check out information about membership and resources at Homecaremissouri.org. And plan ahead for the 2024 gathering at Margaritaville. Stephanie Truex from Johnson County Community Health Services is working hard to overcome the discrepancy between reimbursement and staffing wages. She has particular interest in data and the home health value based purchasing model that is impacting her agency. In the effort to hire and keep talent, when hiring, she looks for some particular attributes that might be surprising. Peggy Bone with Elara Caring, (who also happened to be our “home room mother” for our conference presentation) has a drive to help her team be the best PEOPLE they can be by proving flexibility within home health. Elara Caring has put talent acquisition and referral programs in place that are helping their agencies across the US.  And if that isn't enough, she is also star of the “Peggy Road Show!” to check in on clinicians in a more personal manner and give them shouts on the FOND board!                  She is on the MAHC board and in charge of membership. If you're interested in learning more about the benefits of membership, she's the one you want to talk to!   Home Health Revealed is published by HealthRev Partners. The book evokes the childlike naivety/innocence that we all once experienced as well as the superstitions and simple mindedness of the people in the American south.Kyrin had this to say of the tale. "I read the translated Spanish version of this book and the iconic Mark Twain style still resonates throughout. He is amazingly witty and the storytelling from scene to scene is superb. I highly enjoyed the adventures and also gained more respect of Samuel Clemens after learning about his own adventures through his life. A superb book written by a superb human being!"Timeline:0:00 - Introduction and overview2:20 - Childlike naivety and innocence5:24 - Superstitions and simple mindedness11:22 - Reading Mark Twain in Spanish13:58 - Amazing storytelling and an amazing person16:39 - A superb book17:02 - Pragmatic takeaway: become a doerAs always, we hope you enjoy, Mere Mortals out!About Mere Mortals:Striving for excellence through life's lessons. A personal conversation with Cindy Young about her missing beautiful daughter Christina Maxine Whittaker who was taken on November 13th, 2009 in Hannibal Missouri. After interviewing Cindy I started to hurt and feel sad for Christina's daughter, Alexandria, who was with her mom for a very short time before she disappeared in Hannibal, MO. Alexandria was 6 months old when her mom went missing on November 13th, 2009. Christina was last seen leaving Rookies Sports Bar on 611 Broadway in Hannibal, MO, United States. Today Alexandria is 11 years old, 10.5 years without her mom. Christina was only 21 years old when she went missing and we believe someone knows where she is today. I had a sentimental conversation with Christina's mom Cindy Young. My heart hurts for all of them, knowing that Alexandria hasn't seen her mom for over a decade is a devastating reality for the Young family. I sent her some gifts, wrote her a card to let her know I am thinking of her. I am motivated to help in this search for Christina. If anyone knows what really happened to Christina and where she is today, we are pleading with you to come forward with any information. There is a family who needs their missing loved one returned to them.Christina's DOB: 3/25/88Height: 5’6"Weight: 120-150 poundsHair: Red/AuburnEye Colour: BrownPlease help & call Cindy Young (Christina's Mom) on FacebookHannibal Missouri Police Department at 573-221-0987 or Fax: 573-221-3966Private Investigator on this case is Gina Bradshaw (573) 424-5764.

"Unsinkable Molly Brown- A Rags To Riches Story of a Titanic Survivor"-Born Margaret Tobin Brown to poor Irish immigrants in Hannibal Missouri in 1867, "Maggie" Brown worked stripping tobacco leaves to support her family until the age of 18, when she moved with her sister to Leadville, Colorado to help establish a blacksmith shop. There she met James Joseph (J.J.) Brown, a miner who was also a son of Irish immigrants. Brown strucj it rich when he figured a way to extract silver from the mine's leavings and soon became one of the wealthiest men in the country. They moved to Denver and built a mansion, complete with all the trappings, but when Maggie went through all the motions required to claim her place in society, Denver wanted no part of this nouveau rich, or so the story goes. Determined to correct her lack of education and polish, she read all the best books, hired tutors, and toured Europe several times, becoming proficient in several languages, establishing a reputation as a witty raconteur, and becoming  friends with the Vanderbilts, Whitneys, and Astors, whom she met on her tours. It was on one such tour, headed home to Denver wit loads of crates filled with valuables intended for the Denver Museum, that Maggie boarded the Titanic on her maiden voyage from Cherbourg to New York. Fate intervened, and the Titanic sunk after hitting an iceburg, killing more than one thousand persons, and Maggie, through her bravery and efforts to help the survivors, was to become a national symbol. In subsequent years, through her efforts, she became a tireless advocate for those in need, from the battlefields of France to Women's Suffrage movements in America. A stageplay and movie were created in the name that she had never actually used- "Molly" Brown.
