Como dijimos en el anterior programa, Defenders Of The Faith’ no tuvo la popularidad ‘British Steel’ o ‘Screaming for Vengeance’, según los expertos, porque carece de temas que pudieran haber salido como singles destacados. Sin embargo, es una de sus producciones con mejor calidad, y tiene auténticas joyas, como vamos a escuchar. Y tampoco fue un desastre de ventas, ni mucho menos. En pocos días se situó en el puesto 19 en UK, y 18 en EEUU, y ha sido certificado platino. Quizás, el disco más infravalorado de Judas. Musicalmente, sigue el modelo básico de ‘Screaming for Vengeance’, alternando rocks veloces, con mediostiempos y equilibrando la sofisticación musical con la accesibilidad comercial. Para su promoción, se sacaron 3 sencillos, uno de ellos el tema que hemos escuchado, Freewheel Burning, que es pura energía, como el que escucharemos luego, Jawbreaker, y llegó al puesto 42 de ventas en UK. El 2º single fue Love Bites, que lo hemos omitido, porque no podemos escucharlo todo, y como siempre decimos, os animamos a buscar y comprar el disco, y si es en vinilo, mejor. Personalmente. Love Bites lo encuentro un tanto frío. El 3er single, fue Some Heads are gonna roll, que si vamos a escuchar. Para la promoción, también hubo gira, la Metal Conqueror Tour, que los trajo por 1ª vez a España, y tocaron en directo todos los temas del disco a excepción del Eat Me Alive, que tampoco vamos a escuchar. Como curiosidad, cabe decir que este tema es una oda al sexo, quizás un poco ridícula, que no cayó bien a la crítica, especialmente la femenina. Al final, Eat me Alive lo tocaron en la gira de Nostradamus, lo que convirtió a Defenders of the Faith en el 2º disco, junto al Rocka Rolla, en ser tocados todos sus temas en directo. Por ejemplo, de la portada. Diseñada por la propia banda, el dibujo del personaje fue obra de Doug Johnson, el mismo artista que creó al ave metálica llamada The Hellion en Screaming for Vengeance. El personaje que aparece en esta portada se llama The Metallian, una especie de tigre con cuernos de carnero y con cuerpo con forma de tanque, ideada por los propios integrantes de la banda. De acuerdo a Downing necesitaban una portada llamativa que reflejara el título del disco y por ello crearon a The Metallian como un ser defensor del heavy metal. Al igual que en Screaming for Vengeance, en su contraportada se escribió un mensaje con la idea de contar una breve historia de esta criatura: ¿Nos la lees tú, Isidro? «Emerge desde la oscuridad, donde el infierno no tiene piedad y los ecos de los gritos de venganza estarán por siempre. Solo aquellos que conservan su fe escaparán de la ira de The Metallian… Maestro de todo el metal. Una anécdota de la grabación, es que a K.K. Downing lo atropelló un taxi, y el accidente casi le cuesta la vida. Él y ingeniero de sonido Mark Dodson se trasladaron a un local nocturno y cuando salían, el taxi lo atropelló de frente y lo lanzó a varios metros. Fue llevado al hospital consciente pero con serias fracturas que le costaron estar varias semanas de reposo antes de volver a grabar. Y hablando de los miembros de la banda, no hemos mencionado la formación: Rob Halford a la voz, K.K. Downing y Glenn Tipton a las guitarras, este ultimo también a los coros, Ian Hill al bajo, y a Dave Holland a la batería. Que por cierto, tengo chisme para contar. Pero antes, vamos a por otro tema, que quizás sea mi favorito del album, es un auténtico himno. Es el Rock Hard Ride Free, firmado por Haldford, Tipton y Downing.
