Three Questions for the Mother…She must ask herself Why must the children learn at all? What should they learn? And, How should they learn it? If she takes the trouble to find a definite and thoughtful answer to each of these three queries, she will be in a position to direct her children's studies; and will, at the same time, be surprised to find that three-fourths of the time and labour ordinarily spent by the child at his lessons is lost time and wasted energy. In this episode, we chat with reality star and social media influencer Heather Martin about her experience on The Bachelor, her first kiss at age 22, the opportunities and obstacles of being watched on television and dealing with social media, and her perspective on dating before and after The Bachelor. [3:15] Shooting the Show “For the most part, it's kind of like what I expected, and I think maybe I had to be a little too lightheartedly.” [12:06] First Kiss “I really wasn't gonna give myself to someone or like really want to enter into that process unless I actually thought it was gonna be something, you know, more long-term.” [16:24] Dating as a Christian “I think that's why I have been so protective of my heart; I know what I'm looking for… There's not a surplus of those type of men out there, so I think, I always just kind of saved that for whoever that person's gonna be.” [18:13] Culture shock “I think the negative comments, and all these things were definitely the negative part of the show. It wasn't crazy but it definitely affects you, as much as you don't want it to or you say it won't, it does.” [22:05] Shifting to Social Media “I still feel like I'm in the process of learning social media because it's just so not natural to me… I still feel like a baby trying to learn.” [26:37] Confusing Identities “Well that's super confusing, having people view you in one way, and then expect you to be that way.” [32:27] Transitioning as an Influencer “It's kind of what I'm doing full time now which has been fun, different, hard, and weird, but also like amazing in so many different ways.” [41:00] Influencer life “It was never my dream, that's for sure, but now I'm like ‘this is my dream', which is awesome… I definitely feel there's a purpose behind it.” [44:29] After the Show “I think the biggest thing that I've learned from the show is to be bold… I think that's been something I've always wanted to be, but I always had these fears.” [54:52] The Type “I really do not have a physical type at all… I really like confident and funny.” Follow Heather on instagram @heatherm22 Please download, rate & review this episode and share it with friends! A discussion with Heather Martin about life after surviving mass tragedy and trauma and how she is helping other survivors. Heather and fellow survivors of various events volunteer to bring hope to other survivors through The Rebels Project, the largest peer support group in the nation. Heather was two days away from her 18th birthday when the shooting occurred during her senior year at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. After barricading in a small office for three hours, a SWAT group rescued her and the other students. Heather returned home physically uninjured, but the effects of the trauma she experienced that day continued to impact her in the following years. With The Rebels Project, Heather has traveled to impacted communities to connect with survivors and help provide insight into the journey toward recovery and healing, and The Rebels Project hosts an annual Survivor Retreat where survivors from around the country come together for a long weekend of healing and connection. DR HEATHER MARTIN chats to Paul Burke about her biography of Lee Child:THE REACHER GUY and the Jack Reacher novels. THE REACHER GUY (Constable) Lee Child is the enigmatic powerhouse behind the phenomenally successful Jack Reacher novels. With devoted fans across the globe, and over a hundred million copies of his books sold in more than forty languages, he is that rarity, a writer who is both critically acclaimed and adored by readers. And yet curiously little has been written about the man himself. The Reacher Guy shows us for the first time the young man behind the invention of Jack Reacher. Through parallels drawn between Child and his literary creation, it tells the story of how a lost and lonely boy from Birmingham with a ferocious appetite for reading grew up to become a high-flying TV executive, before coming full circle and establishing himself as an internationally bestselling author.Heather Martin explores Child's lifelong fascination with America - and shows how the Reacher novels fed and fuelled this obsession. Drawing on exclusive correspondence and conversations with Child over a number of years, she forensically pieces together his life, from Northern Ireland and County Durham to New York and Hollywood. “There are two topics that will affect your life whether you're interested in them or not: money and health.” - Morgan Housel While we're typically here to provide insights on financial topics, we've realized that our listeners would greatly benefit from a fresh perspective on concepts that are equally as important to their overall wellbeing. Never before has a thriller writer had a biography written by a literary academic. But Lee Child is a global phenomenon who defies easy categorisation and Australian scholar Heather Martin is not only a fan, but convinced that he has real heft, earning him a spot among some serious heavy hitters. In this episode, she maps the trajectory of how Lee Child created his hero Jack Reacher in his own image to a seamless degree. She sleuths Child’s unpromising loveless childhood, his lifelong addictions, his desire for revenge of past wrongs, and his shrewd, strategic approach to every aspect of becoming a bestseller. This raw and relatable conversation with my best friend and Reiki master, Heather Martin, sheds light on the not-so-shiny side of life's hard lessons – the ones that often hit us when we least expect them. We all have a breaking point – and, for Heather, that was her car's wheels being stolen. What ensued was a dramatic crash of her own self-worth and painful, childhood memories being brought to the surface. What could have been brushed off as a bad day spiraled into something overwhelming. This episode walks through the most triggering moments in her life and how she is bravely working through them to reset the narrative and get back in the driver's seat. On this episode, Danielle and Sydney talk about the controversy surrounding bachelor contestant, Rachael Kirkconnell, and show host, Chris Harrison. They talk about Clare and Dale reuniting in Florida after their very public breakup, and how Tik Tok is leading them to believe that Heather Martin could be the next bachelorette. They wrap up their discussion about “Firefly Lane”, and question how Machine Gun Kelly got Megan Fox's blood into a necklace. They reveal Taylor Swift's easter egg in her latest announcement about her first re-recorded album, “Fearless”. They talk about Scott Disick's new hairdo, and how Kourtney Kardashian just made her relationship with Travis Barker Instagram official. In a Wednesday evening session, the Newbies put up the longest podcast in their Season 1 history and they're not really sure why. Maybe it's because of the excitement of Claire coming home this weekend for the first time since she left for college in Episode 2! The Newbies begin Ep 7 by acknowledging the current BN controversy but announce they will devote a separate episode to that conversation after they each get more informed about the facts. In their recap of Episode 7, the Newbies cover such topics as the nasty turn of attitude towards Heather Martin from the OGs; whether being open to date activities like dangerous driving and tantric yoga are essential to a successful relationship with Matt; whether or not jealousy is green or some other color; the departure of Abigail; and the Queen that is Kit for gracefully departing from her love journey with Matt because she just wasn't feeling it. Just what we had been waiting for !!The Newbies hope you have a couple extra loads of laundry to fold to listen to all of their Ep 7 chatter. Shout out to our special guest Charlie, our blind boxer, who is snoring in the background of this episode.

Even though the Newbies are not using any loud forks this time, Leane thinks this episode still sounds quite noisy! On a Tuesday night before Claire's musical theater rehearsal at her undisclosed college, the Newbies struggle through discussing the heavy-handed, overly-produced feel of Episode 6 of Matt James' love journey. With high hopes for next week's Episode 7, the Newbies cover topics that include why MJ feels she has to be a "bad bitch" and why she has such a hard time owning her part of the drama; why Rachel got a super romantic date and why Pieper was relegated to having a creepy date in the dark woods; how Matt seems like he's becoming increasingly overwhelmed by this crazy process in trying to find a wife; and why in God's name was the decision made to have Heather Martin (who we don't know!) show up at this particular juncture? With all of the above said, special shout out to Chris Harrison and his beginning acting skills in Episode 6.
Last spring, Cylix Shane and some other engineers, using off-the-shelf parts, built a prototype emergency ventilator that could be readily-deployed during the pandemic. “We have some rural hospitals that wouldn't have access to ventilators if they had a surge in patients, so we wanted to be able to allow them to configure one rapidly using parts they could get locally.” Total cost: about $250.WATCH VENTILATOR VIDEOCylix ShaneDesign & Construction ManagerProvidence St. Joseph HealthSpokane, Wash.Heather Martin leads a team of 14 medical librarians who support the work of Providence caregivers in seven states. FDA approval is no longer the finish line in the race to product launch success. Hey y'all! Although this episode was a bit of a struggle to record (you'll hear why), between my unending cough, ghetto birds aka the hood helicopters and recording in a more open space, we still managed to record our mental health episode. We sat down with our cousin, Heather Martin, a licensed therapist, to discuss all things mental health. In observance of mental health week at the beginning of the month, we thought it important to discuss the various forms of mental illness, the stigmas behind it and how to address it for ourselves in a healthy way and for those closest to us. We hope you enjoy the episode! Don't forget to leave us a review if you're enjoying the podcast!
