In today's episode, we interview one of our listeners and rural high school teachers, Rachael Straughn, from Russell County High School in Seale, Alabama. In this episode, Rachael shares her educational journey and narrative. Rachael talks about her childhood dream of being a broadcast meteorologist and storm chaser. She worked hard to be a chief meteorologist on television within a lake effect snow area and achieved her dream at age 25. While in that role, she hosted school learning opportunities to teach students about meteorology and emergency preparedness. While teaching the evening news, Rachael also served as a substitute teacher to connect with the classroom. After achieving her life goal of being a meteorologist, she shifted her career to be a teacher. We discussed the geographical differences in rural education. Rachael talked about her experiences teaching in rural Alabama and the benefits of this experience. This episode shows the amazing job all our teachers are doing in rural education. Rachael Straughn is a chemistry teacher at Russell County High School in Seale, Alabama and a doctoral student in education leadership at Valdosta State University. She has her M.S. Ed from Utica University and her Bachelors in Meteorology from Iowa State University. She has taught middle and high school science in upstate NY and Columbus, Georgia. On this ID The Future, host Rob Crowther chats with Kristin Marais about her new online chemistry course launching this fall through Discovery Institute Academy. Her chemistry class is a two-semester, virtual, synchronous, and lab-based course which integrates the fundamentals of chemistry with applicable intelligent design concepts and topics. Students will progress through the course with Marais and fellow students together, with ample opportunity for real-time teacher-student engagement and student-to-student engagement. Class meets three times a week via Zoom to discuss content, ask questions, and work on problems together. Students can also utilize optional drop-in sessions after class, as well as the opportunity to set up one-to-one live video sessions with the teacher. "What's a wet lab?" Crowther asks during their discussion. Marais explains that a wet lab involves hands-on physical experiments. Students will conduct both physical and simulated virtual experiments during the state-of-the-art course, from equilibrium labs designed to see reversible reactions to reaction rate labs they'll get to design themselves. This chemistry course is unique among other available chemistry courses because it's connected to the Discovery Institute. As such, Marais will be able to connect students with questions to a global network of scientists and scholars in the intelligent design research community, as well as a mountain of books, articles, videos, and animations to help them learn more about chemistry and science in general. Description: This week I am speaking with Keith Stolzenbach, who I was introduced to by my friends at EnCorps STEM Teachers Program. Keith spent much of his career as a professor at MIT and UCLA. When he decided to retire in his late 60s he decided to become a high school science teacher. With the help from the EnCorps program, he is now a chemistry teacher at what is referred to as a Title 1 high school. Title 1 schools get extra assistance from the state and federal government as the majority of the students qualify for financial assistance. When I taught high school math, I taught in a Title 1 school which meant that most of my students qualified for free or reduced-price meals. Many schools in Milwaukee have spent the entire first half of the school year online, as a precaution against the coronavirus. WUWM has been visiting virtual classrooms to see how teachers are adapting. McKenzie King, a chemistry teacher at Carmen Southeast High School in Milwaukee, says some learning experiences are impossible to recreate virtually. Right now, she’s teaching her students about chemical compounds. It’s usually one of her favorite units. “In the classroom, we just like throw out 16 various substances and kids are moving around the classroom and trying to test them and notice different patterns,” King says. “So they’ll melt them and see what temperature it melts at, or dissolve them in water, conduct electricity.” Hands-on labs normally make up the bulk of King’s chemistry class. But she can’t do that when students are learning from home. “The whole point of chemistry, and science in general, is applying it to the real world. But now we’re cut off from the real world,”
