Rethinking Retirement: "People now look at that phase of life after you leave your career, 65 or older, could be 55 or older, as an opportunity to live life differently than you have before." Mark MatsonWe sit down and talk with Mark Matson about transitioning into new phases of life and building a rewarding encore career while giving back to the community. As Mark nears 70, he finds himself with more time for personal interests like swimming and planning a cross-country adventure, though he still enjoys his current job and the surprises it brings.Mark shares a touching story about helping a guy named Paul move from an 1800 square foot house to a much smaller assisted living space. This wasn't just about logistics; it involved handling strong emotional attachments and practical needs. He talks about the importance of guiding people through such transitions with respect, understanding the sentimental value of their belongings, and finding new homes for cherished items. If you like this episode, please let us know. We appreciate the feed back, and your support of offset costs of producing the podcast!Shifting gears, Mark talks about his past in HR, where he spent years working on talent assessment, training, and development. Over time, he collected a ton of personal assessments like Myers-Briggs, DISC, and Enneagram, helping him understand his strengths, weaknesses, and creativity. This eventually led him to explore new interests like interior decorating, thanks to encouraging words from friends and colleagues.Retirement planning is another big topic in Mark's journey. He created a program called "Career Encore" with an HR firm and explored the idea of retirement coaching. Through interviews with retirees, he gained insights on staying active and avoiding a stagnant retirement. Mark's venture into business happened almost by accident. A friend needed help managing home renovations and asked Mark to step in. Applying his HR skills in this new context, he discovered a love for home improvement projects. This led to him starting his own “residential concierge” business, handling everything from beekeeping to home renovations. The gig let him use his talent management, emotional intelligence, and communication skills in a new, exciting way, rekindling his joy for seeing tangible results.Mark recounts the stress of his previous HR role, particularly dealing with layoffs, and his decision to leave in search of more fulfilling work. This resonates with many in his age group who face unexpected career shifts and the challenges that come with them.Starting his own business wasn't easy, but Mark got invaluable help from accountants and attorneys. He stresses that his journey wasn't meticulously planned—he took it one day at a time, staying motivated and faithful. Networking, researching opportunities, and putting positive intentions out there were crucial.Mark's approach to Medicare is pretty creative too—he's got a visual “thermometer” to count down the months until eligibility, cutting down health insurance costs. Through his career shifts, he discovered skills he didn't know he had, getting to enjoy personal fulfillment and flexibility by being his own boss. Michelle shares her personal journey of transitioning from a corporate HR role to becoming a global leadership coach and senior career coach and explains that many people approaching retirement age feel uncertain about what they want to do next and may not know how to navigate job searching in today's technology-driven world. She wrote her book, 'Creating Your Encore Career,' as a step-by-step guide to help individuals in this stage of life explore their options, find fulfilment and transition into purpose driven work in their later years. We explore the importance of a self-reflection process to identifying passions, values and interests which means that people should redefine their retirement to align with increased lifespans and evolving aspirations. We also talk about the value of building a professional network and creating a personal brand to showcase expertise and attract new opportunities as well as exploring options like the gig economy, volunteering, entrepreneurship, or continued education Our conversation also highlights the benefits of growth, curiosity, and exploration in an encore career, as well as the importance of financial planning and managing healthcare and insurance costs. Takeaways An encore career is a meaningful and purposeful career in the third act of life, providing individuals with an opportunity to continue contributing and finding fulfillment. Many people approaching retirement age feel uncertain about what they want to do next and may not know how to navigate job searching in today's technology-driven world. Financial security is an important consideration when transitioning to an encore career, but it is not the primary driver. The focus is on finding work that aligns with personal values and provides flexibility and fulfillment. People in their 50s and beyond have accumulated knowledge, wisdom, and experience that make them valuable contributors in the workforce. It is never too late or too early to start planning for an encore career. Self-reflection is key to identifying passions, values, strengths, and desired work environments. Having open conversations with family members about expectations and boundaries can also help in designing an encore career. Self-reflection and identifying passions and interests are crucial in transitioning into an encore career. Expanding knowledge and skills through education and certifications can help overcome imposter syndrome and enhance credibility. When it comes to our own mortality, one big thing that we all share is that we absolutely have to face it and most of us have no idea how to begin. Through her work as a death doula, Alua Arthur has honed the skills to aid others in navigating these uncertain seas- from the many logistics within end-of-life care to the often unpredictable cravings for human connection and understanding. These vulnerable moments can be colored by many emotions—pain, confusion, joy, regret, and release. Arthur's passion for her work shapeshifts to meet people where they are and guide them towards where they want to be. To Arthur, grappling with the challenges that await us starts way earlier than that final chapter. It isn't something to fear and dread and it's an endeavor we definitely should not be doing alone. In her debut book Briefly Perfectly Human: Making an Authentic Life by Getting Real About the End, Arthur details how her life's work around death has informed and reshaped the ways she thinks we can embrace life while we're still living it. She touches on many encounters with death- from her background layered with the harsh realities of political refuge to mental illness to the firsthand experience of what advocacy for the dying really looks like. Equal parts intimate memoir, thoughtful exploration, and message of encouragement, Briefly Perfectly Human gives context to the author's deep and ever growing relationship with our innate impermanence. Through her storytelling, Arthur aims to explain why we should sit at the table to learn from some of our most painful questions and complicated truths about death- and she invites readers to pull up a chair. Alua Arthur is a writer, keynote speaker, and prominent death doula working to bring visibility to the world of death positivity. She is the founder of Going with Grace, a death doula training and end-of-life planning organization. Her work has been featured in national media outlets such as Vogue, Los Angeles Times, The Cut, The New Yorker, and Refinery29. She has made appearances on CBS's The Doctors, Disney's Limitless docu-series, and at the 2023 TED conferences with her TED Talk Why Thinking About Death Helps You Live a Better Life. Bill Cohen recently received the "Male Caregiving Voice of the Year" award. You may understand why he was selected when you listen to his caregiving story in this episode and how caregiving unveiled a new purpose, which is now providing him with an encore career. Bill was his mother's caregiver after Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005 and took away her home. First, he stepped in as her long-distance caregiver. Then, when she moved closer to Bill in the Pacific Northwest, he became her primary caregiver, juggling caregiving with his work commitments. Bill's mother had Alzheimer's disease, and Bill found helpful resources along the way through the Alzheimer's Association, which led to him attending a support group. As time progressed, he became the support group's facilitator, which led to hosting memory cafes and learning more helpful resources, which he now shares with other caregivers. Bill owns Cohen Caregiving Support Consultants LLC and is a Certified Senior Advisor (CSA)®, caregiving support consultant, elder mediator, volunteer, and advocate for a cure for Alzheimer's disease. He helps folks manage their caregiving journeys with their care partners living with dementia. He speaks to organizations and meetings and facilitates caregiving support groups in person or virtually.

Willpower alone will never lead to success. It certainly won't help you create a successful Encore Career. You need more than willpower–you need habits. Go here to listen → http://www.lynnfriesth.com/podcast1/220 Today, I want to talk all about healthy habits and how to implement them. To help me do so, I'm going back over some ideas from the study, “Longevity and the New Journey of Retirement” by Edward Jones and AgeWave. They talk about the stages of retirement and the disorientation that comes with it. When we retire, we disrupt the habits of work we've had for 30-40 years. All of a sudden, we're launched into a new environment. Additionally, in corporate life, you had a level of drive. You pushed through things and made it work. In your Encore Career, however, you only have so much drive. All of this explains why we have to depend on routines, checklists, and habits to help support us as we create our new Encore Career. Tune in to learn how! We'll dive deeper into these concepts: How to create a new habit. How to identify the distractions that are getting in your way. Why tracking your habits is important. Why you need to stop being so hard on yourself. Four especially useful habits. The power of simplification. Application questions to ask yourself. Last week, I shared the next steps you should take in creating your Encore Career. These steps are your foundation when you're just getting started. They take you from being fresh out of your corporate career, having no clue what you're doing to running a successful business in your Encore Career. In this episode, I share some more thoughts on this topic. Many of these “next steps” are inspired by books I'm reading. They provide practical step by steps for going out on your own and building a brand as a “silver entrepreneur.” One of the highlights I've gleaned from these books is the importance of partners. We just can't do this Encore Career thing alone. Tune in as I discuss why we need partners so badly and some ways I've taken this concept to heart. We'll dive deeper into these concepts: How demographics are changing. How positive thinking affects our health. Mike Kim's eight steps to building a profitable personal brand. How I've engaged with partners. People I've partnered with. Best practices for partnering with others. How partners have bettered my business and life. Do you want to be a victim or an actor? This is the question to ask in a recession. The truth is, rough seasons like recessions can be seen as challenges or opportunities. To be an actor, you embrace your circumstances as opportunities to take action. You do what you can with what you have. Think about it this way: you've been here before. You've made it through economic downturns and come out the other side. Studies have shown that the best companies accelerate out of a downturn in this way. Who's to say you can't do the same in your Encore Career? Now, if you're specifically asking what you should do next, this episode is for you. In it, I discuss what to do with your Encore Career during a recession. We'll talk about the various options available to you at this time: keep working, launch your business, adopt a side hustle, and more. Tune in to learn how to succeed in your Encore Career, no matter the state of the economy. We'll dive deeper into these concepts: How long recessions typically last. The opportunities that exist during a recession. How you can develop your skills in this economy. The importance of digital skills. Why networking is so crucial. Description: In this episode, I am speaking with the Eanes, who has been on the podcast pre-pandemic. Russ has pivoted from religious publishing to being an author, walker, bicyclist, guide, travel educator and a few other things that I cannot remember right now. The point is Russ continues to adapt and takes advantage of opportunities as they arise. Russ is a writer, walker and cyclist from Harrisonburg, Va., a freelance publishing consultant and a travel coach and guide. His goal in living is to inspire others to more meaningful, peaceful and less consumptive lives. He is also an avid traveler, with a love of culture, cuisine and history, especially of Europe and Latin America. Russ is a former member and successful graduate of the Career Pivot community. I first interviewed Russ in episode 143 after he published his first book The Walk of a Lifetime: 500 Miles on the Camino de Santiago. I later published an updated episode in February 2021 about how Russ was adapting to the pandemic. Russ continued to make adaptions throughout the next couple of years including spending one year working full time for GetSetup as a travel instructor. Russ recently published his latest book, Pilgrim Paths to Assisi: 300 Miles on the Way of St. Francis. We discuss in this episode how he got to where he is today and that he is not done yet. Russ's story was highlighted in an article in the New York Times by my friend and colleague Mark Miller, no we are not related, called How a Solo Gig Can Give You a Stronger Retirement. I recommended Russ to Mark for this article. This episode is sponsored by Career Pivot. Check out the Career Pivot Community, and pick up my latest book, Repurpose Your Career: A Practical Guide for the 2nd Half of Life Third Edition. Description: In this episode, I am speaking Linda Sivilich. Linda was a GetSetUp Startup Accelerator Program for 55+ winner. Linda has a real interesting story where she became disabled from her job in the airline industry and now has a successful and more importantly fulfilling business teaching people to sew. I think you will be able to hear the joy in her voice as she tells her story. This episode is sponsored by Magic Mind. I have a 20% off code to share with you guys, it's RYC. To use it, you can go to magicmind.co/RYC and enter the code RYC at checkout. The best part is that they have a money-back guarantee. If you get the subscription, it's 40% off. My 40% off code only lasts 10 days, so hurry up. Linda worked for a major airline for 35 years and loved her job. However, in her mid-50s she lost eyesight in one of her eyes and was forced to retire. She has been teaching people for 20 years, but it was the GetSetUp that changed her course. Read the About Us section from the GetSetUp website: GetSetUp is on a mission to help the third of the world's population who are over 55 to learn new skills, connect with others and unlock new life experiences. Older adults have incredible knowledge to share and new mountains (literally and figuratively) to climb, but until now they haven't had their place to pursue their passions and continue creating, growing, and giving back. Linda entered the GetSetUp Startup Accelerator Program for 55+ last year and was selected as a winner and received a small grant to fund her business. In 2023, I'm focusing on questions. This idea came from a variety of sources I've been diving into lately. It was discussed in a book I was recently reintroduced to called A More Beautiful Question and in a course I recently took. In another book I read, The Highest Goal by Michael Ray, he talked about not focusing so much on goals but on questions. Ray calls these questions “live withs.” I've been drawn to this idea of using questions rather than goals because too many of us tend to race to one answer or the other. Doing that just narrows our field of vision. I don't think our goal should be to see how many answers we can find but, rather, to ask good questions. In this episode, I'm diving more into this topic and sharing some of the questions I'm asking myself in 2023 both regarding my personal and business life. We'll dive deeper into these concepts: More on why I'm asking questions rather than setting goals for 2023. My personal questions for the new year. How I figured out where I can serve with the greatest value in 2023. The key demographic issues for Encore Careers. How I'm using my knowledge of transitions and developing purpose to help people. The key skills or technologies needed for an Encore Career. How I'm putting more definition into what a Portfolio Career looks like. Welcome to this episode of 20/20 Money! My guest on today's show is Dr. Jennifer Stewart. Jen joins me again on the show to talk about an interesting transition that's just occurred for her, and that was selling her practice! Longtime listeners of the show will know that she owned a very successful practice in Connecticut. However, she also felt a calling to use her experience as a successful practice owner to help others in the profession run successful practices and viewed this part of life as the time to do it, and in this conversation we dive into the details of that transition. As a reminder, you can get all the information discussed in today's conversation by visiting our website at integratedpwm.com and clicking on the Learning Center. While there, be sure to subscribe to our newsletter and you can also set up a 20-30min Triage conversation to learn a little bit more about how we help ODs around the country reduce their tax bill, proactively manage cash flow, and make prudent investment decisions or check out any number of additional free resources like our eBooks, blog posts, and on-demand webinars. And with that introduction, I hope you enjoy my conversation with Dr. Jennifer Stewart. Resources: Rocket Fuel
