Meet Jim Haff, a previous high school chemistry and physics teacher turned digital nomad. Six years ago Jim's lease was expiring and he decided, "I don't want to renew my lease, I want to travel." So he literally abandoned his life and did it. He let his lease expire, sold his all his stuff, bought a ticket to Lisbon (alone), and hoped for the best. Then, he started working remotely. Between finding things that explode or pop or fizzle and trying to not set notes alight with Bunsen burners many of us will have fond memories of Chemistry lessons. But it's not all parlour tricks and safety goggles, there's a considerable amount of content to be learnt. Between the scientific terms and symbols, it can feel like an alien language for students and parents alike. So, just what are the best study methods to yield good results? This week's podcast episode is looking at Chemistry, why an understanding is important beyond school and how to prepare for the exams. Nathan McGurl, Founder of The Study Buddy, is joined by Dr David Paterson. David is Chemistry Teacher and researcher. Previously David has been a subject advisor with a UK exam board. As well as being an author and blogger, David is active in working on teacher training and support with the Royal Society for Chemistry, amongst others. For more information about The Study Buddy's approach to organising revision, time management and study skills visit thestudybuddy.com Produced by Pineapple Audio Productions.

Winnie Greer is an educationalist who is a” Chemistry teacher by day and Jazz diva by night!” She has had a wealth of experience in performing her favourite jazz standards, Ella Fitzgerald being one of her main jazz diva idols. Her experience has ranged from being a runner up in the International Jazz singing competition in 2007 to perform in a range of well-known jazz venues e.g. The Vortex ( Dalston), The Pheasantry ( Chelsea) and The Bull’s Head ( Barnes). She has developed her knowledge and love of jazz standards and this can be seen especially when she presents them in different ways with a lot of feeling and emotion. Having benefited from the generosity and knowledge of many great Jazz tutors through the years e.g. Peter Churchill, Tina May, Anita Wardell and Lee Gibson to mention a few, she now also enjoys sharing her knowledge and experience by teaching individual and group sessions to aspiring vocalists. As well as performing gigs with trios and Big bands, she enjoys working with those individuals who are absolute beginners and need that boost to get their singing started as well as those clients who wish to develop their performance technique.
