California Governor Gavin Newsom has denied allegations that he secretly funded a nearly $100,000 bronze bust of himself in San Francisco City Hall, calling them "categorically false." A spokesperson stated that the project was initiated by a nonprofit organization and funded by private donors, not taxpayers. Meanwhile, following a mistrial in the case of Orange County judge Jeffrey Ferguson, who is charged with murdering his wife, he gave an exclusive interview reflecting on the emotional impact of the legal proceedings. Finally, Julia Peters, representing Hackman and Arakawa's estate, requested a Santa Fe court to seal case records to protect the family's privacy amid concerns about potential media leaks of sensitive materials.

Nuacht Mhall. Príomhscéalta na seachtaine, léite go mall.*Inniu an t-ochtú lá de mhí an Mhárta. Is mise Niall Ó Siadhail.Tá sé ráite ag na húdaráis in Sante Fe, New Mexico, go bhfuair an t-aisteoir mór le rá Gene Hackman agus a bhean chéile Betsy Arakawa bás nádúrtha an mhí seo caite. Thángthas ar an bheirt agus iad marbh ina dteach ag deireadh mhí Feabhra, agus i ndiaidh fiosrúcháin is léir go bhfuair Arakawa bás mar gheall ar shiondróm scamhógach hantaivíris, galar neamhchoitianta a scaipeann creimirí, agus gur mhair Hackman beagnach seachtain eile ina diaidh. Bhí Hackman an-tinn le tamall, agus bhí galar croí, galar Alzheimer agus galar duáin air. BhainHackman clú agus cáil amach sna 1970idí i scannáin ar nós The French Connection agus The Poseidon Adventure. Bhain sé gradam Oscar as a ról in The French Connection agus as ról tacaíochta in Unforgiven in 1992. Bhí an Rí Godwin Bebe Okpabi ag labhairt thar ceann a phobail i nDeilt Abhainn na Nígire maidir le truailliú a rinne an comhlacht ola Shell sa cheantar. Bhí an réamhthriail ar siúl chun scóip na gceisteanna dlíthiúla a shocrú roimh an phríomhthriail, a tharlóidh an bhliain seo chugainn. Dar le Okpabi, tá Shell i ndiaidh na milliúin dollar a chaitheamh ar na dlíodóirí is fearr, in áit an t-airgead sin a chaitheamh ar ghlanadh uiscí agus talamh a phobail. BOMBSHELL: The cause of death of Hollywood Icon Gene Hackman & his wife Betsy Arakawa are discussed in a shocking news conference conducted by officials in Santa Fe. The announcement comes weeks after the legend and Arakawa were found dead and decomposed along with one of their dogs.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The unforeseen deaths of Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, shocked the world when their bodies were discovered in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home on February 26, 2025. Authorities responded to a welfare check requested by a maintenance worker who hadn't heard from the couple in weeks. Upon arrival, law enforcement found Hackman in the mudroom near his cane, as if he had fallen. Arakawa was located in the bathroom near a space heater, with an open prescription bottle and scattered pills on the countertop. One of their dogs was found deceased in a crate close to Arakawa, while two other dogs were found alive in different areas of the house. Friends and neighbors had noticed a decline in Hackman's health in the months leading up to his death. Once known for riding his bike around the neighborhood, he had become increasingly reclusive. At 95, his frailty had become apparent, and Arakawa, a 65-year-old classical pianist, had also retreated from public life. Authorities classified the deaths as "suspicious" due to the circumstances, but foul play was not suspected. Initial autopsy reports revealed no external trauma, and tests ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning. Data from Hackman's pacemaker suggested his heart had stopped on February 17, meaning they had been dead for about nine days before being found. Speculation surrounded the case, with some questioning whether it could have been a "companion suicide," but experts doubted this, given that the couple was found in separate parts of the house. The presence of prescription medication near Arakawa and Hackman's known heart condition led investigators to consider a medical event as the likely cause. The entertainment world responded with an outpouring of grief. John Travolta shared stories of Hackman's humor and brilliance on the set of Get Shorty, while Morgan Freeman honored him at the 2025 Oscars, calling him one of the most generous performers he'd ever worked with. Hackman's career spanned over four decades, earning him two Academy Awards for The French Connection and Unforgiven. His work in Bonnie and Clyde, The Conversation, and The Royal Tenenbaums cemented his status as one of Hollywood's most revered actors. Though he retired from acting in 2004, he remained active in writing and personal pursuits. The investigation into the exact circumstances of Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa's deaths continues. Their passing leaves behind a legacy of artistic contributions and a community mourning the loss of two lives lived largely outside the Hollywood spotlight. #GeneHackman #BetsyArakawa #HollywoodLegend #UnsolvedMystery Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Yesterday afternoon, the bodies of Gene Hackman, Betsy Arakawa, and their dog were found at their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The County Sheriff's Office did not have reason to suspect foul play this early in the investigation, and there's no official confirmation on the cause of their deaths. Many have suggested it may have been carbon monoxide poisoning. The couple had been married since 1991.Betsy Arakawa, 63, was a retired classical pianist and co-owned Pandora's Box, a home furnishings store in Santa Fe which she launched with her friend Barbara Lenihan. She resolutely avoided the spotlight and cherished her privacy, never giving public interviews and preferring to live a quiet life with her husband.Gene Hackman, 95, was a Marine Corps veteran who had wanted to act since he was ten years old and pursued that dream several years after he left the service. At the Pasadena Playhouse, Mr. Hackman and his friend Dustin Hoffman were voted “The Least Likely to Succeed” and shortly thereafter moved to NYC to prove the doubters wrong and make their way into the industry. They befriended Robert Duvall, and the three struggling actors shared apartments for much of the ‘60s.All three became some of the best actors of their generation and among the greatest of all-time. Mr. Hackman won Oscars for Best Actor (The French Connection, 1971) and Best Supporting Actor (Unforgiven, 1993), along with additional nominations for Best Actor (Mississippi Burning, 1989) and Best Supporting Actor (Bonnie & Clyde, 1968; I Never Sang for My Father, 1971).He also won three Golden Globes (five additional nominations, plus the 2003 Cecil B. DeMille Award), two BAFTAs (five additional nominations), and a Screen Actors Guild Award along with the rest of the cast of The Birdcage (1997).That's all swell, but itemizing accolades doesn't come close to doing justice to the spell cast by Gene Hackman onscreen. The magic of Mr. Hackman is that he somehow played the same person and a completely different person, simultaneously, in every movie, and it always felt exactly right. If you saw his face in a movie when you were flipping channels, you stopped to watch. Because it's Gene Hackman. I mean, Hoosiers (1986). C'mon, now.Every big character Mr. Hackman has done is so individually compelling whilst simultaneously bearing hallmarks that can only be done by Gene Hackman and wouldn't be as good without them, and we completely bought it every time.It never felt like he broke himself down for characters. He seemed to just put on a costume and act his ass off. And it always worked. My favorite performance by Mr. Hackman is Captain Ramsey in Crimson Tide (1995), the commander of a nuclear submarine who is clearly emotionally unstable and paranoid.I've watched that movie so many times, and even when he's not onscreen, Mr. Hackman looms large in every frame, somehow stealing scenes he's not even in. The pettiness and resentment and narcissism of the character is so palpable that the thought still briefly crosses my mind during every rewatch: “Damn, he's gonna get ‘em all killed.”One of the more interesting “what ifs” in the history of film casting is how Mr. Hackman almost played Calvin Jarrett, the father in Ordinary People (1980), but withdrew due to a financial disagreement with the studio. The late, great Donald Sutherland was cast instead and gave a superb performance—which was infamously snubbed for a Best Actor nomination that year—but just for a second, try to imagine Mr. Hackman in that particular role. I want to see that movie, too.Mr. Hackman fully stepped away from acting in 2004 and confirmed his retirement in subsequent years, only making a guest appearance in an episode of “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives” in 2008 and lending his voice to two Marine Corps documentaries.Ms. Arakawa and Mr. Hackman remodeled a home in Santa Fe and built a quiet and peaceful life there over the past 35 years, away from all the glitz and glamour and gossip of Hollywood and the film industry, for which neither had much patience.Their idea of a good time was spending every Friday night watching stand-up comedy, Susie Izzard being one of their favorites. Their family and friends are in my thoughts today. What a year, y'all. What a year.Charlotte's Web Thoughts is a reader-supported publication. Questions have been raised over how US actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa died, with the situation deemed suspicious, despite no signs of foul play. The pair have been found dead with their dog in their New Mexico home. Carbon monoxide poisoning has been ruled out. The couple's front door was found unlocked, with no signs of forced entry. We are very pleased to bring to you the son of the late, great Mitsu Arakawa. We bring to you Michael Arakawa. Long time fans from the MidWest will definitely remember Mitsu Arakawa as one of the top villians in the area for many years. He was a staple in places like the AWA and WWA. Mitsu also wrestled for the WWWF as well as doing international tours. Starting out in the mid 50s and going until the mid 70s he was active in the era where anyone billed as being Japanese was the bad guy. We'll talk to his son and learn more about Mitsu Arakawa's career as well as learn about what it was like being the child of a wrestler from that era. Make sure you join us for what should be a very interesting conversation.
Taking over our next instalment, Tokyo's sensation Elli Arakawa punches in the series with two hours of full-immersion atmospheric techno and deep, dubbed-out folds. Running the gamut elegantly from textured tapestries of sound to kaleidoscopic 4x4 wares, through acid-drenched extrapolations and further poetic drifts across spacious sonic wildlands, Arakawa's mix eases us in an ambiguous realm where sheer DJ functionality rubs shoulders with ethereal abstraction and hyperconscious escapology. One for the lovers of breath-holding dives and riveting techno panoramas.

The month of Manga continues with a lively discussion of Fullmetal Alchemist chapters 1 & 2, written and drawn by Hiromu Arakawa. Arakawa creates a beautiful, steampunk setting to create a world where alchemy is a widely practiced science. This particular Manga may feel a little more familiar to American audiences, due in part to the successful anime series that were based on the books. Fullmetal Alchemist explores concepts well-known by Western cultures, such as the Catholic Religion, and follows a structure more similar to that of mainstream American comics, which allows this series to be an easy starting point for those looking to get into Manga. Will the Elrich Brothers get the philosopher's stone? Or are they doomed to live with their mistakes? Listen in and find out!
We're sharing the first few episodes of JAPANIMATION STATION here in the Weekly Suit Gundam feed, but be sure to subscribe to the new podcast feed on your platform of choice. All links can be found at JapanimationStation.Com or by searching in your favorite podcast app. Thanks for listening! For our first anime subject, we're diving into the world of Hiromu Arakawa's Fullmetal Alchemist, starting with the 2003 anime that partially adapted the then-young manga before branching off into an increasingly divergent anime-original story. While it was a huge and acclaimed hit, in Japan and abroad, at the time of release, the show has a more controversial reputation now, years after Arakawa's manga was completed and faithfully re-adapted as Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. Sean and Jonathan are coming at the 2003 series from wildly different directions – Jonathan a lifelong fan who started with this anime as a kid, and Sean only recently having read the manga without ever seeing either anime – so our perspectives inherently diverge. But if there's one thing we clearly agree on, it's that this is a fascinating show very much worth talking about. Whether one loves it or hates it, it's clearly more than an outdated curio, and we think you, like us, will come away from this conversation with a greater appreciation for all versions of Fullmetal Alchemist. Enjoy, and come back next week as our journey through Amestris continues with our review of the Fullmetal Alchemist movie sequel, Conqueror of Shamballa! Subscribe to our YouTube Channel! Discovery shelving a completed Batgirl film for a tax write-down, and then continues into the first big topic from our new anime podcast, Japanimation Station, where we're diving into the world of Hiromu Arakawa's Fullmetal Alchemist, starting today with the 2003 anime that partially adapted the then-young manga before branching off into an increasingly divergent anime-original story. Hello Strong Sunflowers, On today's episode we had the pleasure of interviewing Schuyler Arakawa, and her mother, Meridith Alexander, to hear the story behind the BLOOM. After graduating from Yale University, Schuyler continued her education through a Fellowship in South America. The “Schuy” is the limit for this adventures soul. Her time in South America was filled with just that. Unfortunately, while white water rafting in Colombia, a boulder fell on her crushing her skull, leaving her fighting for her life. This is a story of resilience, miracles, handwork, self-love, and manifestation. A true STRONG ASS SUNFLOWER. We hope you enjoy her story as much as we did. Xoxo, G & Z
