Marc Jantzen, Founder of The Consultancy Growth Network, joins Guy Bloom to explore what it really takes to build, grow and lead a successful consultancy. Marc reflects on selling Blue Sky, taking time away from work and eventually returning to build something new in The Consultancy Growth Network. He shares how he tested his proposition, launched with only six members and adapted the business when lockdown made its original model impossible. The conversation explores the value of mentors, the importance of testing ideas with the market and why consultancy leaders need people around them who understand the journey. Guy and Marc also discuss the impact of AI on consulting, the move from charging for time to pricing around value and the changing shape of consultancy firms as technology replaces more junior analytical work. They close with an honest discussion about leadership, motivation, transparency, vulnerability and why being a decent human being matters, but is not always enough. There are moments when leaders must step forward, create belief and have the conversations others may prefer to avoid.

Lana Tong, a tour guide who migrated to Hong Kong less than a decade ago, guides audiences through a post-pandemic Hong Kong undergoing rapid shifts in its political and socio-cultural landscape. Her journey is disrupted by two disembodied voices—native narrators steeped in Hong Kong's 80s to 00s ethos. Offering corrections rooted in a native perspective and drawing from their upbringing in Hong Kong's 80s to 00s milieu, they recount the city's geography and the values of freedom championed by earlier generations, paradoxically steering Lana to rediscover the city through their lens. Amid the tides of time, questions arise: Can a city's soul survive relentless tides of change? Will its people cling to inherited ideals, flee, or forge new meaning from the fragments? What motivated you to make this film? This film was born out of a need to hold onto fleeting moments in Hong Kong, moments that felt especially fragile during the severe pandemic and political upheaval of 2021. Homebound with my partner, we found ourselves reminiscing about childhood and quietly mourning how the stories that shaped us seemed to be dissolving, not only through the passage of time, but also because of the shifting political landscape in Hong Kong. In response, I began filming the city's landscape and eventually created this short film. From the idea to the finished product, how long did it take for you to make this film? The script and dialogue were written at the very beginning, but the images were filmed gradually over four years—from the lockdown to the reopening of the city. I wandered with a handheld camera and sound recorder, capturing fragments of memory from crowded streets to the city's border, trying to sketch a map of change through rapidly shifting visuals and evolving soundscapes. How would you describe your film in two words!? Questioning identity. What was the biggest obstacle you faced in completing this film? The biggest difficulty lies in the relevance of the content over time. Since the text was written four years ago, some of the topics became outdated during production. I even considered amending or removing those parts. Interestingly, some of these outdated issues have now become cross-generational matters, so I decided to keep the original script. ---- Subscribe to the podcast: https://twitter.com/wildsoundpod https://www.instagram.com/wildsoundpod https://www.facebook.com/wildsoundpod

Happy Post Memorial Day, Fashion Besties! Whether you celebrated in style or stayed cozy in your pajamas, I hope you had a fabulous time. Special thanks and snaps to everyone in the Armed Forces for their incredible service. This week, we're jumping from the high dive into our Top Swimsuit Picks for 2024. Get ready to hit the beach in style with suits that flatter every figure. HOT TIP: You can find all of Holly's selections on your Pinterest board of the week! As your Fashion Over 40 (and now Over 50) Bathing Suit Expert - with a bathing suit PSA- This is a product that has more measurements and specifications that can go down to the 1/16th of an inch. The first thing you should look for when buying a bathing suit is the measurements in the areas where you need the most support. Key Talking Points: Finding the Perfect Fit: Measurements Matter: Swimsuits, like lingerie, require precise measurements. Look for suits that fit your body type perfectly, offering the support and coverage you need. Tall Girls, Listen Up: If you're over 5'10” with a long torso, choose styles designed to prevent uncomfortable riding up. Proper fit is key to avoiding fashion mishaps. Support for All Shapes: From minimal support to bra-like structures, pick swimsuits with the right amount of boob support. Wider straps can also provide better lift and comfort. Coverage Concerns: Ensure your suit isn't too see-through when wet and offers enough coverage in the front and back to keep you comfortable and confident. Style and Functionality: Multi-Functional Swimwear: Choose swimsuits that can double as bodysuits for a seamless transition from beach to dinner. This adds value by lowering the cost per wear (CPW). Age-Appropriate Choices: Find a balance between stylish and age- appropriate. Avoid suits that make you feel self-conscious or too matronly. Activity-Ready: For active days, opt for styles that stay put and provide enough coverage, especially if you're running around with kids or participating in water sports. Top Picks for 2024: Jantzen: Known for their rich history and diverse styles, Jantzen offers affordable swimsuits with UV protection. Check out their sister company, Cosita Linda, for more fashion-forward options. Karla Colletto: If you're ready to splurge, Karla Colletto's swimsuits, made in the USA, feature unique styles and prints perfect for making a statement. Miraclesuit: A long-time favorite, Miraclesuit designs provide excellent support and a flattering silhouette, making them worth the higher price tag. Norma Kamali: With styles like the Illusion swimsuit, Norma Kamali offers sexy and well-fitted options that are sure to turn heads. Swimsuits For All: Catering to sizes 4 to 44, this brand ensures every body is a beach body. Their reasonable prices and wide range of styles make them a go-to choice. What Not to Do: Avoid Big Box Stores: Don't waste time hunting for cheap, ill-fitting swimsuits at big box stores. Invest in quality pieces that make you feel fabulous and last longer. Avoid Instagram Traps: What you see being sold on IG is mostly fast fashion: A major fashion crime, and crappy all-around. Last Week's Episode Recap: Last week, we tackled the tricky topic of office dress codes in Episode 197. PS: A big shout out to everyone who wrote in with terrific comments! During the Second World War, Mennonites in the Netherlands, Germany, occupied Poland, and Ukraine lived in communities with Jews and close to various Nazi camps and killing sites. As a result of this proximity, Mennonites were neighbours to and witnessed the destruction of European Jews. In some cases they were beneficiaries or even enablers of the Holocaust. Much of this history was forgotten after the war, as Mennonites sought to rebuild or find new homes as refugees. The result was a myth of Mennonite innocence and ignorance that connected their own suffering during the 1930s and 1940s with earlier centuries of persecution and marginalization. European Mennonites and the Holocaust (U Toronto Press, 2021) identifies a significant number of Mennonite perpetrators, along with a smaller number of Mennonites who helped Jews survive, examining the context in which they acted. In some cases, theology led them to accept or reject Nazi ideals. In others, Mennonites chose a closer embrace of German identity as a strategy to improve their standing with Germans or for material benefit. A powerful and unflinching examination of a difficult history, European Mennonites and the Holocaust uncovers a more complete picture of Mennonite life in these years, underscoring actions that were not always innocent. Performance and Mindset Coach Leah Jantzen has heard all of the midlife excuses - I can't. I don't have time. It costs too much. I don't know how. I'm too old. And on and on. She says it's time to put yourself on the hook for a change. Of course you can, change your priorities. Choosing good health doesn't cost anything. Everyone has time. And what is too old? There is no such thing.Leah knows that if she can do the things she has done, then so can you. And she has done some amazing things this year. She'll tell us all about those things and how she was successful before delving into how we can do the same things at whatever level we would like to be successful. It's all about mindset, having a desire, making the choice, and then being committed to it.Better health is a needed investment in yourself. And what do we call investment in yourself - GOOD SELF-CARE! And that is something we all need.I am so honored to have Leah back on the podcast this year. For almost 30 years, Alan Jantzen was the man behind the scenes for what became one of the Fort Collins restaurant industry's most dominant organizations - Hot Corner Concepts. Featuring amazing brands including Moot House, Austin's American Grill, Big Al's Burgers & Dogs, and Comet Chicken, Hot Corner Concepts set the standard for quality and consistency in our region. Along the journey, Alan was given many opportunities and lots of responsibility, but was never granted an opportunity to become an owner, and in the spring of 2021 he started looking for what's next. In September of 2021, he shot his shot - asking 42-year owner/operator John Arnolfo if he could buy the Silver Grill Cafe. “Absolutely not!” was John's quick answer. But - within a few weeks they had a back-of-the-napkin deal worked out, and by December Alan was the proud owner of Dish Up, LLC DBA Silver Grill Cafe. In the meantime, Alan was approached by Val and Nick Lanteri, owners of Vern's Place since 1990, to see if he was interested in stewarding their restaurant into its' next chapter! He pushed pause on that conversation in the moment, but by mid-summer of 2022, Alan and his wife Jackie started Dish Up II, LLC DBA Vern's Place, and now operate two classic restaurant institutions, with a total of 167 years of history - 90 years at Silver Grill Cafe and 77 years at Vern's Place! Alan got his start in the restaurant business as a teenager, and his mom drove him back and forth to Greeley from his hometown of Ault for a dishwashing job until he'd saved enough money to buy a car. He moved to Fort Collins and got a job at Moot House in his early 20's, and was soon the right-hand-man for Scott McCarthy and Steve Taylor, then-partners in their first restaurant. His stories of restaurant launches and turnarounds and successes continues from there, and based on our conversation the successes at Silver Grill and Vern's are very likely to continue. So please tune and enjoy my inspiring conversation with Alan Jantzen.Check out Vern's PlaceCheck out Silver Grill CafeEpisode Sponsor: InMotion, providing next-day delivery for local businesses. They end by offering some big picture conclusions on the impact golf made on their lives this year, and what overall lends a round of golf to be life giving rather than draining.
Jantzen and Peter Donahue join Andy to discuss their impromptu trip to the Lido, hickory golf, and how golf can either give you energy, or be completely draining.
