Welcome back! This is the Season 4 kickoff and new episodes will be back every week from now on, Wednesdays at 7pm PST. Yung Student Loans joins me today to talk all about dating apps. We start by getting into Jenevieve's 2020 song, Baby Powder. It was the second single she dropped right after Medallion, which is another bop. She's a new artist on the come up, working on her album and I'm excited to hear more. Baby Powder is about being really into someone but then you see who they really are, maybe they do you dirty or something, but once you see it, you're over it. This happens a lot with dating, even more specifically when you use dating apps. We talk about how easy it is to catfish not just physically, but personality wise as well. Dating apps can be scary cuz people have the ability to study your profile and shape themselves to seem compatible, but you can't be fake forever. I had listeners send me their dating app stories and experiences so we have some wild ones, some funny ones, and some cute ones. YSL tells me about his experience with Hinge & Feeld, which is a popular app for singles and couples with "alternative lifestyles" like polyamory, kinks, etc. We also talk about Tinder versus Bumble. We talks dating app and social media profile red flags and how to tell if your significant other could possibly still be on these apps. Tune in for all the sh** we got into on this episode, it's definitely a juicy one! The Music Producer I'd never buy from is a personality type I'm sure you've seen before. It's usually a guy insulting your intelligence, your self esteem, strategy, and pockets through online advertisements. What's interesting about them is that they usually have more in common with pick up artists than the producers they are trying to finesse. So in today's episode we discuss how to spot them and why you should avoid doing business with them. Sometimes it feels like those conversations with recruiters aren't really interviews. After all, there are definitely things you can and should tell the recruiter, that you may not say during the interview with a company. Building trust between the recruiter and candidate is essential so that you can share what is truly most important as you seek your next career move. But keep in mind, there are things you can do to make sure the recruiter is getting an accurate picture of who you are professionally. When a video call is how you are going to make your first impression, there are a few things you can do to ensure it's a good one. As a recruiter, Angee often finds herself pointing out those opportunities to make sure the candidates she works with are putting their best foot forward. What's funny is that she has heard more than once, “Oh… I would never do that in a 'real' interview.” When you interview with a recruiter, it is definitely a “real” interview. You are making a first impression. And that recruiter wants you to be "the one." They want you to succeed. Help them help you! In this episode, Angee shares a few ways you can make sure you're not doing anything that distracts the recruiter from learning about your skills, experience and career goals. Basics on how to avoid things that distract that recruiter from all the reasons you are the ideal person for a job. Take notice of your general appearance. Look behind you and pick the best background that is not distracting. Have the light on your face instead of behind your head, causing you to be in the shadows. It’s totally fine if your dog barks – hers might do the same. Kids coming into the room unexpectedly? Cat crosses the keyboard? That’s part of life at home. It's all good. But every interview is a real interview. Visit: LinseyCareers.com for show notes and available downloads. © 2020 Angee Linsey

MENTORS RATHER THAN TEACHERS Truly impactful teachers transcend instruction and become mentors. All it takes is building connections with students. Track with me here. Because I know from first-hand experience the problem is that it can be difficult to build those bridges. A lot of teachers are struggling to keep their heads above water - especially in their first few years in the classroom. Between creating lessons with a curriculum you're learning as you go, trying to figure out the style of classroom management they want to use, and keeping up with grading, it's hard to get into a connection mindset. Throw in all. the. meetings, and the paperwork, and did I mention the meetings? It can leave teachers feeling like connecting with their students - and impacting them positively - is quickly dying dream. THE URGENT VS. THE IMPORTANT The good news is that many teachers are pursuing connection and working to manage all the urgent things so they can focus on the important ones. They're trying out different strategies and methods to manage their classrooms, their paperwork, and their time. They're discovering ways to get to know their students individually, build connection with them, and become a mentor. I've seen it this play out personally in the lives of my own teens - I know the teachers who impacted them in middle school, the ones who treated them as individuals and inspired them to think more, dream bigger, and reach farther. I know that you had those teachers too - maybe they were the ones who inspired you to step into the classroom yourself? THE CONSEQUENCES OF NO BRIDGES I've also seen what happens when teens don't have any bridges built with adults. You only have to look at the statistics to find the grim picture. More than 1 in 20 8th grade students reported using alcohol, marijuana, or illicit drugs. 90% of students in grades 4-8 report have been harassed or bullied. And 3% of kids 13 or younger have had sex - which, by the way, that number jumps to 20% by the time teens hit 9th grade. It's our job to disrupt those numbers - not in some abstract way, but one student at a time. To connect in meaningful ways that have a lifelong impact. To know our students, love them right where they are, and inspire them to become the best versions of themselves, and thrive right now. Not when they're adults. Not when they're high schoolers, but in this moment. A DEEPER PURPOSE That's what I stand for. My mission is to give you, a middle school teacher with a passion for your students, who has a deeper sense of purpose, exactly what you need to transform into that mentor. My First Year Teaching Here's exactly when I knew I was called to a bigger purpose than "just" teaching social studies. I was working at a very diverse school in Alexandria, VA. It was my first year of teaching, and I was on a team with 3 other beginning teachers. Thank goodness there was one veteran on the team - looking back, I'm sure it was a tough year for her too, being our mother hen. An Unexpected Discovery The school was in an area full of gangs, and although nothing violent ever happened on our campus, we knew it was the backdrop of our students' lives. At the time, slam books were a thing - this was in pre-cell phone days, and kids would pass the notebooks back and forth, and the content was usually not inspirational. But the day I confiscated a notebook from one of my 4th-period students, I had no clue what I was about to uncover. I'm sure I thought it would be the same typical, gossipy, bullying type of rant typical of the other 8th-grade-girl slam books we came across. I wasn't prepared to read about how this beautiful, precious girl had been traumatized over the past weekend, attempting to join a gang. QUESTIONS THAT HAUNT ME I did all the "right" things, bringing in the school counselor, letting her know that we loved her and wanted to help her however we could. But it left a mark. One I'm grateful for. It's a mark that compels me to make connections and work to build bridges with teens so that horrors like she experienced, are eradicated. Because the question that still haunts me is: if that young woman had had an adult she trusted, someone she had confidence knew her and was for her, would she have made the same choice? TEACHING IS NOT ENOUGH That question led to this discovery: it's was not enough for me to only teach my subject. I needed to shoot for something more. It was frustrating because it felt like I was doing everything I could humanly possibly be doing. For those of you who have survived your first year of teaching, you know what I'm talking about. I was overwhelmed and exhausted. It was grueling to create lessons from scratch, figure out my classroom management plan, get everything graded, attend all the meetings, fulfill all the communication expectations, and learn the school culture. How could I possibly get to know my students personally when I barely had time to eat most days? Yet, it didn't feel like enough. QUESTIONS THAT LEAD TO DISCOVERY Was teaching my students social studies enough? Would getting them all to pass the state test at the end of the year make me the kind of teacher I wanted to be? Well, let me ask you - have you ever had a teacher who helped you pass a test who you didn't connect with? Yeah, me too. Not only ones I didn't connect with but ones I couldn't stand, who I'd NEVER look to for advice or as a role model. But on the other hand, have you ever had a teacher who you trusted? One who taught you worlds more than their subject area, who just helped you human better? I found myself asking: Isn't it important to teach students how to show up for themselves and others? To strive to understand and encourage them? How is sticking solely to teaching your subject going to help you build that kind of connection with your student? THE SATISFACTION OF CHOOSING TO MENTOR If you're like I was, in that moment of discovery, the thought of adding one more responsibility to my plate was disheartening - but the prospect of going on, as I was, was more than disheartening - because why continue to teach if I wasn't making an impact? I knew staying on the same path wouldn't satisfy my soul - the piece of me that propelled me into the classroom in the first place. Staying meant I was going to continue to feel unfulfilled, disconnected, and ineffective. Change sounded scary - adding anything else to my plate felt impossible. But imagining what it could look like to connect with my students gave me a sense of expanding hope. A spark of energy. Connecting could transform everything and give meaning not to my life - but to my day. THE JOURNEY TO BECOMING A MENTOR I knew changing how I managed my time was going to play a big part in this transition, and so was mastering the curriculum I was teaching. More importantly, amassing strategies to connect in the small moments was going to super-important. Keeping track of all the little pieces of information I learned about students every day became a priority. Remembering the pieces of their lives that they shared, asking them about the sports they played, the parent who was traveling, the TV show they enjoyed - those were the first hammer swings in building a bridge. Sharing parts of myself was important too. Stories about my dog, my trips home to Texas, and the YA books I was enjoying became part of our conversations. It was a start. And every year, I got one step closer to becoming the kind of teacher I wanted to be - connected. Empowered. Impactful. Going beyond teaching, becoming a mentor satisfied my soul and fulfilled the sense of deeper purpose my heart longed for. HOW ABOUT YOU? How about you? My question for you is this: are you satisfied with being a teacher? Or do you feel the calling of a deeper purpose? One that compels you to become a meaningful mentor? If that's you - if you're compelled, I'd love for you to join my Facebook group, In the Middle of It. It's a place where we're having that conversation - what it looks like to start the journey to becoming a mentor. I'd love to see you there! To say that Brad Houser merely impacted my musical life is hardly true. He almost entirely put me on a course, in fact. I must've seen Critters Buggin' 25 times in Seattle in the 90s and when I couldn't find myself a guitar gig I got myself a bass gig. Brad was my guy. I even started a band with some friends that was our answer (read: attempted rip off) to Critters, an instrumental band consisting of my 3 different basses (4 and 5 string plus fretless), drums and a percussionist, and a clarinetist. So, yeah. Brad had an influence on me. And, as I've said a million times: playing the bass was one of the most important things I've ever done for my guitar playing. So, Brad eventually influenced my guitar playing by my estimations. Getting in to Critters opened doors for me to go back and listen to Miles, Herbie, and some other 70s stuff like Mahavishnu. Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians' debut album had a break out single, What I Am. As a young rock/metal kid it was unusual for me to get into something like that. I wasn't a Deadhead and only appreciated very few things outside of my preferred comfort zone. But not much. Later I realized a huge element to What I Am that drew me in was the interesting bass playing. There was something going on that I'd never heard before which was so musical, complex and busy but not overpowering. I loved it. The bass just didn't stand out in much music I was listening to. So, of course, when I eventually began playing bass I sought out Brad when I heard he lived in Seattle. We didn't get far in lessons, 2 or 3 I think. But, I went and watched him play a ton of Critters Buggin' shows. At one of our lessons he blew my mind when he told me he was taking an African dance class to help with his bass playing. I'd never heard someone speak of such a completely physical relationship to an instrument and performing on it. He became my benchmark bass player and though I knew I'd NEVER be the bassist he is I figured I had to sort out how to fool folks into thinking I belonged in a category of musicianship that he existed in......In this episode of Couch Riffs we talk about some of this stuff. PLUS, Brad's new signature bass coming out with Reverend Guitars. Brad and I stayed friendly over the years and when we would run into each other it was always fun and good to catch. So, when I saw the band was touring to support the new album (which is great) I was super excited to see the Brooklyn date. Brad agreed to appear on Couch Riffs and here are the results. Always great to catch up, Brad. Thank you so much and good luck with the new album and everything you do. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/couch-riffs/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/couch-riffs/support

Virginia Rometty I learned to always take on things I'd never done before. Growth and comfort do not coexist." -- Virgina Rometty (CEO of IBM) Virginia "Ginnie" Rometty is the current Chairman, President and CEO of IBM. She rose through the ranks to get to be the first woman CEO of the company. A really dynamic person, she has taken her position as one of the most influential women in America by having the right attitude. Ginnie takes on things outside of her comfort zone. While most people do not like to leave their comfort zone, Ginnie always takes on things she has never done before. She knows that Growth and comfort do not coexist. You can have comfort and growth. One of my best friends, Bud Malmstrom, who also happens to be my martial arts teacher, has what we affectionately call "Budisms". One of Bud's most famous is "Without Change There Is No Growth". This agrees with Ginnie's thoughts in her quote. And really, you cannot have both comfort and growth. They do not coexist. Ginnie and most executives and entrepreneurs have not gotten to where they are by only taking on things in their comfort zone. They reach out of the zone as often as they can.
