This week on Franchise Addicts, we're doubling up with a deep dive into Episodes 4 and 5 of Alien: Earth.In Episode 4, Observation, things slow down but get stranger—Wendy begins to “speak” in the language of the Xenomorphs, Nibs shocks everyone with an impossible pregnancy claim, and ethical cracks widen inside Prodigy as Morrow tightens his grip on Slightly. The hybrids aren't just changing—they're evolving.Then Episode 5, In Space, No One…, takes us back to the doomed Maginot in a chilling, feature-length flashback. We see the sabotage that caused the crash, the crew's desperate fight against facehuggers, ticks, and “the Eye,” and the reveal that Boy Kavalier had a hand in it all. In the end, only Morrow survives, setting up a dangerous alliance with Weyland-Yutani.We cover it all—alien communication, hybrid horror, corporate betrayal, and one of the most terrifying Alien sequences since the original films.

It's time for episode four of Alien: Earth, 'Observations'. Which is apt because there's a lot of observing going on: Wendy in the lab, Boy Kavalier watching Joe, Dame Cynthia watching Nibs (...fly across the room), and the eyeball squid monster watching everyone at once, from inside a sheep. We also observe that the show is turning out to be less interested in aliens and more interested in transhumanism - we can tell because it says so out loud, through the mouth of Ade Edmonson - and also that it is one step ahead of us in terms of its references and subtext. What happens to metatextual framing when your antagonist starts doing it out loud in the show itself? Something extra clever and exciting, probably. More tangibly we discuss how Alien: Earth is beginning to move and position its pieces for the second half of the series. What's going to happen next? We literally don't know! It's time for episode three of Alien: Earth, and the title of the episode is 'Metamorphosis'. Which is a reference to our showgirl, of course, but also the Lost Boys, Morrow, and humanity itself in this show about making machines, becoming machines, putting children into machines ("this is fine" - the ethics board, distractedly), and sometimes thinking about machines when an alien comes along and tail-whips you into cutlets. Turn and face the strange, children. Which reminds us - that spinning eye octopus is back this week, certainly in the thoughts of Nibs. The USCSS Maginot, a Weyland-Yutani C-class deep space research vessel, approaches Earth after a 65-year expedition to obtain extra-terrestrial specimens, among them facehuggers. On Earth, at Prodigy’s Neverland research island, a terminally ill child named Marcy Hermit becomes the first hybrid, having her consciousness transferred to an adult synthetic, and renames herself Wendy. Adjusting to her new body with the assistance of synthetic mentor Kirsh, Wendy oversees several other children who undergo the procedure. A malfunction compromises the Maginot’s navigation, placing it on a collision course with Earth. Some specimens get loose, and a grown Xenomorph kills most of the crew. It crashes into a tower in Prodigy City, New Siam, where Wendy’s human brother Joe Hermit works as a medic and corporate soldier. CEO Boy Kavalier asserts that Maginot’s contents now belong to Prodigy, and deploys Kirsh, Wendy, and the other hybrids to assist with search and rescue to test their enhanced capabilities. Security officer Morrow, who survived the crash in a reinforced panic room, moves to protect the cargo and detains two Prodigy soldiers, who are killed by a leech-like specimen. Joe is chased by a Xenomorph and separated from his colleagues. It tracks him to the higher floors of the tower, killing another soldier and massacring an apartment of wealthy residents who refused to evacuate. He is saved by Morrow, who tasers him and the Xenomorph, but it regains consciousness and escapes after killing numerous other soldiers, sparing Morrow. Arriving in Prodigy City, Hybrids Tootles, Smee, Nibs, and Curly encounter two other dangerous extraterrestrial specimens. Wendy locates her brother with Slightly, a fellow Hybrid, but Joe does not recognize her. Slightly reveals her true identity to a shocked Joe, who believed Wendy/Marcy had died. The three encounter several Xenomorph eggs and are ordered by Kirsh to contain them until a HazMat team arrives. Joe is dragged away by the Xenomorph, and Wendy chases after. In this special episode of the REIT Report, part of an ongoing series, “Building Resilience,” covering issues facing the REIT industry as it remains focused on investing for the long term, Daniel Kaniewski, Managing Director, Public Sector at Marsh McLennan, joins Nareit's Jessica Long, Senior Vice President of Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability, to discuss how his experience as the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) first deputy administrator for resilience has led to his current focus advancing resilience investment in the private sector.“During Hurricane Katrina, I was at the White House and saw the mass devastation, and I said, shouldn't we be doing something ahead of time to reduce these disaster losses Americans will almost inevitably face. What I found was there was a small but growing interest in an area called disaster resilience.”Currently, Kaniewski chairs the finance, insurance, and real estate committee at the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS), a congressionally chartered nonprofit. He shares how he first got to know NIBS through their 2005 Natural Hazard Mitigation Saves study, which showed that every dollar the federal government invested in hazard mitigation saved four dollars. Then in 2017, “on the heels of hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria,” Kaniewski asked NIBS for the bottom line of a forthcoming updated Mitigation Saves study. “They shared that savings were actually, six to one. The updated report found that others benefited from these mitigation investments beyond the federal government. Communities that can continue to function after a disaster will save money, not just to the homeowner or the federal government, but to everyone in that community who would otherwise have to take the time to help those with the losses. Recovery costs were greatly reduced by those hazard mitigation investments.”

The National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that supports advances in building science and technology. They were established by the U.S. Congress in 1974. They bring together experts from throughout the building industry, design, architecture, construction, and government, and lead conversations to ensure our buildings and communities remain safe. In 2021 NIBS launched their national BIM program in an effort to standardize BIM and data processes throughout the building industry in the United States. This week, I have the privilege of conversing with Lakisha Ann Woods, CAE, the Chief Executive Officer of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) which is a dynamic network of more than 96,000 architects and design professionals throughout 200 chapters committed to enhancing the built environment. Woods previously served as President & CEO of the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) where she led efforts to expand the organization's programs and markets while growing and strengthening its membership base. Prior to joining NIBS, she was the Sr. VP & Chief Marketing Officer at the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), where her team was responsible for all marketing and revenue-generating programs – including marketing the International Builders Show, sponsorship sales and partnerships with major national companies. Woods is the author of the book "Never Get Their Coffee: Empowering Fearless Leadership" and currently serves as Chair of the Board for the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE). She also currently serves on the Board of Visitors for the University of Maryland School of Architecture, previously served as Vice Chair of the U.S. Green Building Council Board of Directors and is a global speaker. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland in College Park and lives with her husband and daughter in Howard County, Maryland.
