Pasquale Sementilli was born to Italian immigrants who built their life in America — and he became an American citizen himself in his late teens after passing the test. What nobody knew was that as a child he had been sexually abused by a neighbor — something he carried completely alone for years while navigating construction work womanizing and alcohol abuse after high school. Then he lost two close friends on 9/11. And that loss pushed him toward something bigger — the NYPD. In this episode of Locked In with Ian Bick, Pasquale shares the complete story — from his Italian immigrant upbringing to the childhood abuse nobody knew about to his years in construction to losing friends on 9/11 to becoming an NYPD officer in 2003 to working some of the worst precincts in New York City to responding to child abuse cases as a victim himself to the calls that still haunt him to his medical retirement after a line of duty injury in 2011 and what he carries from all of it today. _____________________________________________ #nypd #survivor #truecrimecommunity #cops _____________________________________________ Connect with Pasquale Sementilli: https://www.instagram.com/pasqny757575?igsh=MW5iOThiYWZkcno1dw== _____________________________________________ Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ _____________________________________________ Timestamps: 00:00 Son of Italian Immigrants Who Became an NYPD Officer — Pasquale's Full Story 04:41 Growing Up in an Immigrant Family and the Values That Shaped Everything 07:20 The Childhood Experience He Carried Completely Alone and What That Did to Him 13:01 The Impact of That Trauma and the Self Destruction That Followed 22:00 Choosing Construction and Trucking and What That Career Path Really Looked Like 25:53 Becoming a US Citizen and What Joining the NYPD Really Required 33:34 His NYPD Application Journey and What That Process Really Involved 40:00 Starting as a Police Officer in New York City and What Those First Days Required 47:42 Responding to the Hardest Cases on the Job and What That Personally Triggered in Him 54:00 Coping With Difficult Calls and the Emotional Impact That Followed 01:01:12 Street Policing — the Lessons the Risks and the Stories That Defined His Career 01:10:06 Handling Pressure Pranks and What Working the Street Really Looked Like 01:16:40 The Policing Culture Shift and What Discretion Really Means in Practice 01:20:20 Discretion Humanity and the Challenges That Define Modern Policing 01:27:04 The Memorable Cases That Still Stay With Him Today 01:31:00 Child Neglect and the Reality of City Life That Most People Never See 01:34:39 Community Family Structures and the Cycles That Define Generational Struggle 01:36:12 His Retirement His Injury and What Moving On Really Required 01:40:07 Finding Closure Healing and What Life After the Job Really Looks Like 01:46:01 Finding Meaning Support and the New Purpose That Followed Everything He Survived _____________________________________________ To advertise on the show, contact sales@advertisecast.com or visit https://advertising.libsyn.com/LockedInWithIanBicka Learn more about your ad choices. Tom Davis is one of the funniest people I know. We first met ten years ago on Murder in Successville, the hilarious BBC3 sitcom he co-created with his friend James De Frond. At the time, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. What I didn't realise then was just how much the show meant to Tom. Murder in Successville wasn't just another job for him. It was a pivotal moment and there was so much riding on it. This conversation is a rollercoaster. I haven't laughed that much in a long time - but it also reveals a side to Tom that goes far beyond the laughs. In this episode, Tom shares:Why he took a risk on me for the very first episode of Murder in SuccessvilleHow he desperately wanted to be a dad and feared it might not happenWhy he decided to go sober and what it's taught him What Timothée Chalamet text him after the Critics Choice AwardsWhat happened when Tom was mistaken for Ed Sheeran's bodyguard This conversation is a reminder that it's not always a simple road to success - true success is a journey. Michael Smerconish is joined by political journalist Mark Halperin for a wide-ranging and deeply personal conversation about the growing cost of refusing to take sides in today's polarized America. From Trump's evolving response to the Minnesota ICE shooting to the backlash faced by journalists who insist on nuance, Halperin and Smerconish explore why centrism now draws fire from both the left and the right. They also dig into Trump's political instincts, Democratic 2028 contenders like Rahm Emanuel, Gavin Newsom, and Josh Shapiro, and whether the political middle can still survive in an era of outrage. Garret speaks about the life of Martin Soster, famed jailhouse lawyer who successfully won cases related to the constitutional rights of prisoners, was politicized in prison by the Nation of Islam in the 1950's, ran radical Afro-centric bookstores in Buffalo NY to radicalize the youth, embracing anarchism during his time imprisoned on a frame up during which he was a celebrated political prisoner resisting cavity searches through the courts, went on to organize after his release for tenants rights and rehabilitating disused buildings for community centers and helping run a childcare. Sostre was a mentor to Lorenzo Komb'oa-Ervin and Ashanti Alston and laid important foundations for modern Black Anarchism in the US. Seneca provides advice about how to regard and make use of the memories one has of friends, why one ought to value and take advantage of the time one has with friends, why one should have more than one friend, and why replacing a lost friend can be good when grieving To support my ongoing work, go to my Patreon site - www.patreon.com/sadler If you'd like to make a direct contribution, you can do so here - www.paypal.me/ReasonIO - or at BuyMeACoffee - www.buymeacoffee.com/A4quYdWoM You can find over 3000 philosophy videos in my main YouTube channel - www.youtube.com/user/gbisadler Purchase Seneca's Letters - amzn.to/2Myx6os

For Lavinia and Juneau Jane, the journey is one of stolen inheritance and financial desperation, but for Hannie, torn from her mother and siblings before slavery's end, the pilgrimage west reignites an agonizing question: Could her long-lost family still be out there? Beyond the swamps lie the limitless frontiers of Texas and, improbably, hope" (Wingate). This week in Louisiana history. April 6 1764 First Acadians actually arrived in Louisiana. Bonobos and chimpanzees — the closest extant relatives to humans — could have the longest-lasting nonhuman memory, a study led by a UC Berkeley researcher found. Extensive social memory had previously been documented only in dolphins and up to 20 years."What we're showing here," said Berkeley comparative psychologist Laura Simone Lewis, "is that chimps and bonobos may be able to remember that long — or longer."Berkeley News writer Jason Pohl first published a story about this study in December 2023. She is somewhat mysterious about her music in her social media though, she says she likes it that way.  Hear her story about why she doesn't do body glitter any more! It was pretty funny! I'm too busy. It'll be awkward. What if they don't like me or even remember me? There are countless excuses to not reach out to somebody. But until you do, you'll never know what you're missing. On this episode, meet people bravely reaching out - to strangers, long-lost friends and potential lovers. When Cheryl Taylor was in high school, her vice principal changed her life. Now decades later she wants to find him and thank him, but is it too late? Can we find Mr. Yakichuk? Corine Mathelier has packed up her life in Toronto and moved to Montreal in hopes of finding the friendships and community she is longing for. We check in to see how it's going, just days after the move. When international students Sele Akere and Dipo Oksesola saw an ad for a room to rent in Kelowna, they thought it was a scam by a tough biker. But they reached out anyway and discovered Bill Pittman is really a big softie... and that they probably saved Bill's life. So, you want to date Alicia Bunyan-Sampson? There's a form for that. After too many bad experiences in the polyamorous dating world, she created a fun and insightful Google form as a way of reaching out to her. She tells Ify all about it. We hear from excited and nervous fans of Canadian influencer Spencer Barbosa, as they wait in line to meet their internet hero in person. But backstage, 20-year-old Barbosa is feeling jitters of her own, wondering what her fans will think of her in real life. At the age of 60 Brian Bannister has overcome addiction, abuse, lost two wives and was living on the street. He had all but given up on life, until Danielle MacDuff decided to strike up a conversation and offer him a job on her farm. Now, not only does he wake up every day with a sense of purpose but the two have struck up a wonderful friendship that neither saw coming.

It used to be that generations lived their entire lives in the same neighborhood. That's changed considerably and today, friends and family are scattered all over the world. Weekly Sunday dinners are few and far between, replaced by FaceTime and zoom calls. So it got me thinking. I wonder where everyone landed? I had an ideal childhood. I grew up on Long Island in New York.  We moved a couple of times during my years in grades K through 12. I attended two elementary schools, junior high school, and one high school, and was homeschooled. Yeah, there was a thing even before it became fashionable. In my senior year, my family traveled throughout the United States in an RV visiting landmarks and historical sites, and purely experiencing North America firsthand. With this said, I lost touch with many of my schoolmates over the years. And while researching for the article that I was writing gave me an opportunity to see where they were now, the roads that their lives had taken and if somehow I could find them and we could reconnect.
