Guitarist John McLaughlin's career has been long and winding. From his early solo records and work with Miles Davis, he possessed a unique approach to the guitar that encompassed jazz and rock vocabulary, played with a biting tone and stellar, virtuosic technique. He's never stopped developing, and we're covering our favorite highlights of McLaughlin's career: his acoustic (and later electric) take on Indian music with Shakti, his more traditional jazz projects, and much more. There are lots of listening highlights in this episode and we've covered as much as we can: Mahavishnu Orchestra's first two records are undisputable; Tony Williams Lifetime's Emergency may be the birth of fusion guitar; McLaughlin's mid-career studies in Indian music are inspiring; his take on Coltrane in an organ-jazz setting is monumental. But we could still cover a whole other episode's worth.Sponsored by PRS Guitars: http://prsguitars.comFollow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. This episode's title is a wee bit misleading.  The boys don't meet Mr. Mahavishnu (John McLaughlin, of course) but rather Matt Phillips, long-time listener to the podcast who just happened to write a very good book on the famous fusion guitarist called "John McLaughlin - From Miles and Mahavishnu to the 4th Dimension."  The book covers the whole of McLaughlin's recorded career - not just his best known years with the Mahavishnu Orchestra - and our conversation is also wide-ranging.  And, no, Mike hasn't turned into a robot. He just sounds like one because recording zoom is trickier than it seems.

Hello Hello! Billy Amendola in my “Bubble” with today's guest, who is not only one of the most respected musicians/producers on the planet, but he's also been a mentor, an inspiration, and a dear friend to me for decades. He appeared on the scene in NYC from Michigan as a drummer and teacher. A few of his students include Omar Hakim, the late Tony Thompson, and many others who launched successful careers. At 21, he joined the Mahavishnu Orchestra on the recommendation of their previous drummer (who was at the top of his game with the title “greatest drummer”), the one and only Billy Cobham. Now a band-member, he goes from the road into the studio to work on the next Mahavishnu album with John McLaughlin, Jan Hammer, and legendary Beatles producer George Martin.    A few years later, he took the world by storm on the dance floor by releasing his solo album; singing, writing, producing, and playing, and he became a star in his own right.   If that wasn't enough, a few years later, he became one of the world's Top Ten producers of all time, crafting number-one hits for Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, George Michael, Mariah Carey, Cindy Blackman, the list goes on and on.   With Multiple hit records, Grammy after Grammy, as a band leader, solo artist, producer, singer/songwriter, spiritual leader, and drummer, touring with Jeff Beck, Journey, and his band, there's nothing the man can't do.   We catch up to discuss his latest album “Euphoria” and more. Please welcome Narada Michael Walden back to Drum Channel. Enjoy!

Let's go back five years together, shall we? Gig Gab was just a year old, and we all were just finding our footing here together. We had the pleasure of having Jan Hammer join us for a conversation in Gig Gab 68, and with both Paul and Dave out for a two week stretch, we figured this was a perfect time to revisit that interview, certainly our most downloaded episode ever. From his start in Prague, the stories flow, including tales about Jan's experiences with Jeff Beck, Keith Emerson, Jaco Pastorius, Neal Schon, Mahavishnu Orchestra and even Jimi Hendrix. As we wrote in the show notes five years ago: there's so much packed into these 43 minutes you'll probably want to listen twice. For some of you, we've made that second listening even easier today!

Billy Cobham's existence is one of the few reasons I play drums at the level I do. To swing was never s question for my guest as well. It just mattered that it feels good. Music of Another Present era is finding your true nature in the music of Oregon a band that continues today and reaches into the breach of classical music with jazz changes using world instruments or maybe Ralph Towner on Ringmodulator. My guest was born and raised in Portland and at an early age connected with Native American Jim Pepper who's free spirit is in the same vein as Leon Thomas, Carmen MCrae and rasa an Roland Kirk. The records I own in which guest is featured allow me to expand consciousness and be more at peace to discover my true nature. Oregon is a band that features Polyrhythms and Odd Time they were an acoustic counterpoint to the electronic development of Mahavishnu in the early seventies. The ability to express yourself in a non verbal fashion enhances your perception of man and the music. At times the music takes over, the player knowing that it comes from another space or place and trusting in that sincerity. I sit here today in Winter Count, AZ with my guest in a true desert oasis. A camp of the earth and the indigenous. To remain connected to the cosmos then you must remained grounded to the earth knowing that if you don't practice the wood upright bass will humble you. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

John McLaughlin has been called the "greatest guitarist in the world" by Jeff Beck & Pat Metheny. In the 60's he gave guitar lessons to Jimmy Page and in 1963, John played with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker in the band Graham Bond Quartet. They played an eclectic range of music genres, including bebop, blues and rhythm and blues. In 1969 he played with Tony Williams's group Lifetime and then with Miles Davis on his electric jazz-fusion albums Bitches Brew (which has a track named after him), Jack Johnson and On the Corner. At the suggestion of Miles Davis, John formed the iconic fusion band Mahavishnu Orchestra in 1971, which included Billy Cobham on drums, Jan Hammer on keyboards, Jerry Goodman on violin and Rick Laird on bass fusing virtuosity with electric jazz, rock and Indian music. Shiva is beloved above all by Vishnu and Vishnu is the utmost favorite of lord Shiva because they are both one and the same having taken different forms to bless the devotees . The oneness and non duality of Shiva and Vishnu is explained , praised and proved in Vedas , Upanishads , puranas and epics. In rudrahrudayopanishad ये नमस्यन्ति गोविन्दं ते नमस्यन्ति शङ्करम् येऽर्चयन्ति हरिं भक्त्या तेऽर्चयन्ति वृषध्वजम् ये द्विषन्ति विरूपाक्षं ते द्विषन्ति जनार्दनम् ये रुद्रं नाभिजानन्ति ते न जानन्ति केशवम् yē namasyanti gōvindaṃ tē namasyanti ṡaṅkaram yē & rcayanti hariṃ bhaktyā tē & rcayanti vṛṣadhvajam yē dviṣanti virūpākṣaṃ tē dviṣanti janārdanam yē rudraṃ nābhijānanti tē na jānanti kēṡavam those who bows to govinda ( Vishnu ) bows to shankara ( shiva ) (i.e . ) both are pleased when we bow before any one of them . Those who worship hari with devotion worship vrushadhvaja ( the one with the bull as his banner ) . One who hates viroopaaksha also hates janārdana . ( i.e . ) hating lord Shiva is equal to hating lord Vishnu . Lord Vishnu is also disrespected when lord Shiva is. So no hater of Shiva can call himself a devotee of Vishnu and no hater of Vishnu can call himself a devotee of Shiva . Those who dont understand rudra don’t understand kevasha . शिवाय विष्णु रूपाय शिव रूपाय विष्णवे शिवस्य हृदयं विष्णुं:विष्णोश्च हृदयं शिवः यथा शिवमयो विष्णुरेवं विष्णुमयः शिवः यथाsन्तरम् न पश्यामि तथा मे स्वस्तिरायुषि ṡivāya viṣṇu rūpāya ṡiva rūpāya viṣṇavē ṡivasya hṛdayaṃ viṣṇuḥ viṣṇōṡca hṛdayaṃ ṡivaḥ yathā ṡivamayō viṣṇur - ēvaṃ viṣṇumayaḥ ṡivaḥ yathāntaram na paṡyāmi tathā mē svastirāyuṣi Shiva is in the form of Vishnu and Vishnu is in the form of shiva . Vishnu is the heart of Shiva and Shiva is the heart of Vishnu . Vishnu is embodiment of Shiva and Shiva is embodiment of Vishnu . Till i understand this great secret I will be well and good . The above mantra is found in the skandopanishad of yajurveda . यथा शिवस्तथा विष्णुर्यथा विष्णुस्तथा शिव : । अन्तरं शिवविष्ण्वोश्च मनागपि न विद्यते । । - स्कान्द पुराने yathā ṡivastathā viṣṇuryathā viṣṇustathā ṡiva : । antaraṃ ṡivaviṣṇvōṡca manāgapi na vidyatē । । - skānda purānē Vishnu is just as shiva and Just as Vishnu is shiva ; there is not even a minute difference between Vishnu and shiva . Sivananda Lahari in Verse 82 says: Lord Vishnu, who took many forms, as Thy arrow, as Thy mount, as Thy consort occupying half Thy body, as a boar, as Thy friend, as Thy drummer etc. and who offered his eyes at Thy feet(in place of a lotus flower) - that Vishnu, forming a part of Thy very being, is indeed the most worshipful among the worshipful? If not, he, who is there to excel him? Mahavishnu is the greatest bhakta of Lord Parameshwara. he follows all methods of Bhakti and enjoys doing so, because he is always with his Lord in all these forms. he enjoyed serving the Lord by taking many forms. When Lord Parameshwara went to destroy the three cities of the Asuras, Mahavishnu became the bow in His hand. The three cities represent the three states waking, dreaming and deep sleep. Mahavishnu being the protector of the people is used by Shiva as a bow for destroying the negative tendencies during those three states. Vishnu became the Mighty Bull Vrishabha and carried Lord Shiva wherever He wanted to go. Here Vishnu became the servant Dasyam of his Lord. Hari took the form of a boar to find out and reach the feet of the Lord, Here he is doing vandanam to the Lord. As Parvati the consort of Shiva, Vishnu became half of the body of Shiva by surrendering everything Atmanivedanam. A seeker surrendering everything in him becomes one with Bhagawan, he becomes a part of Bhagawan. hari took the form of Mohini to infatuate the Asuras while distributing the nectar got by churning the milky ocean. Later showed this form to his beloved Lord Parameshwara and became His friend(sakhya). When Lord Nataraja danced the Cosmic dance, Vishnu played the Mridangam. The protection of the universe has to follow the laws of nature and thus make everything move harmoniously according to their own dharmas. This is depicted by Vishnu playing the Mridangam and keeping pace with the cosmic dance of Shiva. Mahavishnu did archana to the beloved Lord Shiva with lotuses. He offered 999 lotuses and found one less. So out of his love for the Lord of his heart, he offered his eyes as the thousandth flower. By all these deeds, Vishnu became the best amongst all the bhaktas of Shiva, the Lord of Ambika. Young Southpaw talks to phenomenal Norwegian guitarist Hedvig Mollestad about her new record Ekhidna, opening for John McLaughlin while six months pregnant and having just had appendix surgery, snakes, Eddie Van Halen, Alex Lifeson, and much more.  https://soundcloud.com/hedvigmollestadtrio  Hedvig Mollestad: How do you feel about John McLaughlin’s way through music, his career, where he started and where he is now Young Southpaw: I listened to that new record he put out a couple months ago, I enjoyed it. My favourite stuff of John McLaughlin’s are those Miles Albums, those electric Miles albums. A Tribute To Jack Johnson, I could listen to that forever. Just wonderful playing. And of course Bitches Brew and Live/Evil and all those. That for me is my favourite type of music.  HM: Live/Evil and Bitches Brew to me also is just, that’s just the defining what you have to try to avoid, because you can never be close to how good those records are. So if you play that kind of music it’s really hard to avoid those references. It’s really really really hard because you can never be that good. And still it’s so fun when you get into that kind of place with musicians. Absolutely.  Something I found fascinating with John McLaughlin because he is just a machine, like his technique, talking about fast but he has his own way of playing fast. It’s very accentuated, in a very pentatonic-based position. But suddenly it’s not. And I’ve been thinking, because the Mahavishnu records has this thing that is something that I’m still listening to when I listen to them, that is the guitar sound. It’s wrenching, and it’s roaring, and it’s in your - it’s almost inside your face, because it’s so close. To me, that is one of the things that I really cherish. ...... HM: The Antilone riff is very jumpy YS: It’s like a frantic boogie. And the opening, my first thought was AC/DC’s ‘Thunderstruck’.   HM: Yeah. I love AC/DC, really love them. Yes, that is a great reference, and also the Black Sabbath opening. The rain and the thunder. That’s fantastic, I love that reference. Putting on a jazz record in 2020 and saying ‘ah, I hear AC/DC in this jazz-rock’, that is a goal achieved. Thank you so much.

It becomes very difficult for snakes to leave a forest when there is a fire. Other animals may flee due to their long legs, but serpents, only being able to crawl, are generally burnt in the fire. At the last stage, the limbs of the body are not as much affected as the life air.

Maxime ECHENNE alias Le reporteur-diggeur à domicile

As anyone familiar with this interview series has most likely gathered, the original Mahavishnu Orchestra are something of an obsession for me — not to mention a gamechanging force in the early blending of jazz and heavy rock. Jan Hammer's passionate, virtuosic keyboard playing was a crucial element of the group, and his time with the band is only one brief chapter in his career. In this interview, conducted at Jan's home studio in upstate New York, we touch on the birth and development of Mahavishnu, as well as Jan's collaborations with great musicians across the jazz and rock spectrum, from Tony Williams, Elvin Jones, Sarah Vaughan and John Abercrombie to Jeff Beck, Eddie Van Halen, Carlos Santana and Journey's Neal Schon. Jan couldn't have been more enthusiastic or generous with his time, and it was an absolute honor speaking with him. To learn more about Jan, go to janhammer.com.

To say that Brad Houser merely impacted my musical life is hardly true. He almost entirely put me on a course, in fact. I must've seen Critters Buggin' 25 times in Seattle in the 90s and when I couldn't find myself a guitar gig I got myself a bass gig. Brad was my guy. I even started a band with some friends that was our answer (read: attempted rip off) to Critters, an instrumental band consisting of my 3 different basses (4 and 5 string plus fretless), drums and a percussionist, and a clarinetist. So, yeah. Brad had an influence on me. And, as I've said a million times: playing the bass was one of the most important things I've ever done for my guitar playing. So, Brad eventually influenced my guitar playing by my estimations. Getting in to Critters opened doors for me to go back and listen to Miles, Herbie, and some other 70s stuff like Mahavishnu. Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians' debut album had a break out single, What I Am. As a young rock/metal kid it was unusual for me to get into something like that. I wasn't a Deadhead and only appreciated very few things outside of my preferred comfort zone. But not much. Later I realized a huge element to What I Am that drew me in was the interesting bass playing. There was something going on that I'd never heard before which was so musical, complex and busy but not overpowering. I loved it. The bass just didn't stand out in much music I was listening to. So, of course, when I eventually began playing bass I sought out Brad when I heard he lived in Seattle. We didn't get far in lessons, 2 or 3 I think. But, I went and watched him play a ton of Critters Buggin' shows. At one of our lessons he blew my mind when he told me he was taking an African dance class to help with his bass playing. I'd never heard someone speak of such a completely physical relationship to an instrument and performing on it. He became my benchmark bass player and though I knew I'd NEVER be the bassist he is I figured I had to sort out how to fool folks into thinking I belonged in a category of musicianship that he existed in......In this episode of Couch Riffs we talk about some of this stuff. PLUS, Brad's new signature bass coming out with Reverend Guitars. Brad and I stayed friendly over the years and when we would run into each other it was always fun and good to catch. So, when I saw the band was touring to support the new album (which is great) I was super excited to see the Brooklyn date. Brad agreed to appear on Couch Riffs and here are the results. Always great to catch up, Brad. Thank you so much and good luck with the new album and everything you do. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/couch-riffs/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/couch-riffs/support
