And it is no wonder with seven of the original eight members intact. It is no secret that the golden age of their recording came through the production talents of James William Guercio, owner of Caribou Ranch. He produced their first 12 albums, all of which went platinum, the first five recorded in New York City, the latter five produced and recorded at Caribou Ranch. There were two “greatest hits” collections in there as well. The Guercio-produced albums generated a dozen hit songs, including “Saturday In The Park” and "If You Leave Me Now,” which both went to number one on the charts. "If You Leave Me Now” was recorded at Caribou. Chicago was one of the most successful bands of the rock era, racking up 21 Billboard Top Ten hits between 1970 and 1990. They were a band that placed equal (if not greater) emphasis on horns as guitar and picked up where Blood Sweat & Tears left off. Chicago quickly learned how to channel their expansive sound into concise pop songs, scoring hits in the early 1970s with punchy tunes like "25 or 6 to 4" as well as producing sweet melodies like "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" and "Saturday in the Park." As the ‘70s went on, the band began to emphasise their softer side with bassist Peter Cetera singing mellow standards like "If You Leave Me Now," "Baby and "Hard to Say I'm Sorry." The band kept the same sound after Cetera's departure in the mid-1980s. They continued touring and producing albums despite the fact that hits dried up in the ‘90s. Despite this, Chicago remained a pop/rock institution, with original members keyboardist Robert Lamm, trumpeter Lee Loughnane and trombonist James Pankow. Our guest today is Chicago co-founder Lee Loughnane who had been a music student at DePaul University with reed player Walter Parazaider and trombonist James Pankow. The three had moonlighted in St Louis' clubs, playing everything from R&B to Irish music but it wasn't long before organist and singer Robert Lamm was asked to join the band. The new group started playing around the Midwest and soon the sextet became a septet when Peter Cetera became the group's third lead singer. In 1968, they moved to Los Angeles and the album Chicago Transit Authority was released. The album reached the Top 20 and was certified gold. It went on to sell more than two million copies. The band shortened its name to Chicago and the second album in 1970 vaulted into the Top Ten even before its first single, "Make Me Smile," hit the Hot 100. It went on to reach the Top Ten, as did its successor, "25 or 6 to 4." The album quickly went gold and eventually platinum. "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" drawn from the group's first album, as its next single; it gave them their third consecutive Top Ten hit. Chicago III came out in 1971, Chicago V in 1972 spending nine weeks at #1, spurred by its gold-selling Top Ten hit "Saturday in the Park.” The next Top Ten hit, "(I've Been) Searchin' So Long," was released in advance of Chicago VII while Chicago X  included the Grammy-winning number one single "If You Leave Me Now." Chicago XI in 1977 generated the Top Five hit "Baby, What a Big Surprise." By 1984, the band released the biggest-selling album of its career, Chicago 17. It spawned two Top Five hits, "Hard Habit to Break" and "You're the Inspiration." At the turn of the '80s into the '90s, Chicago underwent two more personnel changes. In 1998, they released Chicago 25: The Christmas Album. The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. Their documentary “Now More Than Ever: The History of Chicago" debuted in 2017. Chicago received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020 and their 38th album was released in 2022. Our guest today is co-founder Lee Loughnane who discusses how and why after 56 years, 100 million in album sales and 21 top 10 singles, the Chicago band are still rolling.

What the Riff?!?
1977 - November: Steely Dan “Aja”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later May 3, 2021 40:29

Quick!  Name a song by Steely Dan.  Chances are good that the song you picked is off this sixth studio album, the iconic Aja.  Steely Dan had already become a successful jazz rock group by this time, but Donald Fagen and Walter Becker created their most successful album by far with this one.By the time this album was produced, the group had been reduced to the duo who were responsible for the lion's share of the music.  Fagen and Becker assembled a large group of session musicians to make this album, including well known vocalists like Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers and Timothy B. Schmit of the Eagles.  Donald Fagen has said that the album name was inspired by a high school friend whose Korean wife’s name was Aja.   Many consider this album and Gaucho, the following Steely Dan studio album, to be two of the founding albums to a genre that would become known as yacht rock.  However, the heart of this music is undoubtedly jazz. Black CowThe album starts with this song which has been interpreted a lot of ways, from a commentary on a troubled relationship to self-doubt, to  a track inspired by Thelonious Monk.  The song describes a girl sitting at a counter, and a Black Cow is a fountain drink like a Coke float.Deacon BluesThe opening lines describing the "expanding man" may have been inspired from sci-fi author Alfred Brester's 1950's novel "The Demolished Man."  The song itself is about having a name for the nerds and the losers of the world, and compares football powerhouse Alabama and their name as "the Crimson Tide," to the proposed name for the loser.  Becker and Fagen considered this song somewhat autobiographical.PegThis track features backing vocals from Michael McDonald.  The song is about an actress in a photo shoot being promised fame.  While some speculated that the song referenced Broadway and Hollywood star Peg Entwistle, Donald Fagen stated that "we just wanted a dotted half note for that spot and Peg was short enough to fit with the music."  JosieThis song finishes off the album and is a bit more influenced by Delta blues than the more jazzy tracks on the album.  This may be because the song was written well before the rest of the recordings for Aja.  The song tells about a popular girl from a blue collar town, who always creates excitement when she returns to town.  Timothy B. Schmit plays bass and is on background vocals for this track. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:“The Lonely Man” - theme from the television series “The Incredible Hulk”Long before the MCU, we were introduced to David Banner in this weekly show, who struggled to escape the curse of turning into the Hulk when he became angry.  Bill Bixby played David Banner, and Lou Ferrigno became famous as the green-muscled Hulk. STAFF PICKS:“Free 'n' Easy” by Uriah HeepWayne's rocking staff pick highlights an underrated prog rock/heavy metal group.  This is not a single, but a deep cut off Uriah Heep's eleventh album.  “Baby What a Big Surprise” by ChicagoRob brings us this well known tune with Peter Cetera taking his turn as lead vocalist of Chicago.  Cetera was attempting to repeat the success of "If You Leave Me Now" with this song.  Interestingly, this song is the only one on the album Chicago XI to feature Cetera on lead vocals.  “I Know a Little” by Lynyrd SkynyrdBruce's staff pick was written by guitarist Steve Gaines, and features his talented picking.  This song is off the last Skynyrd album before the plane crash that killed several band members including front man Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines.  Gaines had just joined the band, so this would be his first and last studio album as a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd.“Cold As Ice” by ForeignerBrian's pick is a great tragic song about a materialistic woman who will some day face the consequences of her selfish ways.  This is off Foreigner's debut and self-titled album.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:“The Entertainer” by Scott JoplinBilly Dee Williams starred in the biographical film "Scott Joplin," which was released in November 1977.

It may still be a bit nippy outside but today is the first day of spring and I can't think of any better way to celebrate it than with a Tea Dance set. Lets face it, 2020 was a disaster and 2021 is only beginning to resemble a slight ounce of a return to normalcy. Then again, that all depends on where you live. If you're in a science denying state that values profit over lives — then nothing has really changed for you. Meanwhile, everyone else who follows the science, wears masks in public while social distancing and gets vaccinated as soon as it's available have been the people taking one for the team. I won't get bogged down into the specifics nor am I here to lecture but let's just say it ain't over no matter how badly you tell yourself otherwise (even after vaccination) but I digress. Our duty is to put you in a happy mood and get you ready for what ultimately awaits on the other side of this thing. I do want to mention that the opening song is not new, nor is it an updated version of the song. "If You Leave Me Now" by Veronica Sales (not the Chicago classic) just showed up while perusing JunoDownload for additional Disco House tracks to fill out the next set. It turns out, the song was recently made available to download services but is originally from 1992. That's about all I know of the song because it was never a hit in the states. Having never heard the song before and after previewing it – I knew I had to include it in this set. The song bleeds GAY from every vocal to every beat! If you've never heard it before, you're in for a campy treat. The rest of the set is either new tracks or reworked classics by some of our favorite DJs like Barry Harris, Dirty Disco, Block & Crown, Division 4 and Jet Boot Jack. It blends tracks from the 70s, 80s, 90s to current day and is a masterful work of happy dance music. If this doesn't put a smile on your face — nothing will. I've got a new Disco House as a companion piece to this set going up soon, our annual Spring Break set that's gonna be different than the standard commercial dance releases and hopefully (fingers crossed) a long overdue Diva Hall of Fame entry. In fact, the April and May calendar release schedule is all filled up. Technically, June as well because I had been fretting on what to do for Gay Pride month but I've got it all figured out. Chicago is an American rock band formed in 1967 in Chicago, Illinois, calling themselves the Chicago Transit Authority in 1968 before shortening the name in 1969. The self-described "rock and roll band with horns" blended elements of classical music, jazz, R&B, and pop music. They began writing songs with politically charged lyrics, and later moved to a softer sound, generating several hit ballads. The group had a steady stream of hits throughout the 1970s and 1980s. On this episode we pay tribute to the following songs.... If you Leave me Now- Leonid & Friends (2:44) Love Me Tomorrow- Linda and Luigi Boscolo (8:19) You're The Inspiration- Luxe Voir Entertainment (13:39) Hard To Say I'm Sorry- Jason Derlatka (19:33) Stay The Night- Leonid & Friends (23:59) If She Would Have Been Faithful- Chicago (LIVE)(30:01)
