Ep51: Ola Abou & Ilham Essalih on exploring Palestinian & Syrian freedom struggles through literature

The Diverse Bookshelf

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 24, 2023 76:38

This week on the show, I'm joined by two book-lovers, book bloggers and activists to talk about some really important issues: Ola Abou and Ilham Essalih.  We're talking about what books we should read to further understand the war on Gaza, and the war in Syria, and how the movements for liberation in Palestine and Syria are intertwined. At the time of recording (16th October), we were on day 9 of Israel's war against Gaza, with the official death toll having reached nearly 3,000, 700 of whom are children and babies. For 9 days, the besieged Gaza strip has faced relentless attacks and a total land, sea and air blockade, cutting off its supplies of water, food and fuel to 2.3 million people. The situation is beyond horrendous, as hospitals struggle to cope with the injured amid a lack of medical supplies and doctors, and communities are being ordered to leave their homes due to imminent attacks. Even while leaving, passages that were previously declared as safe, have been attacked, sparing no one. There are also increasing reports on attacks in the occupied West Bank, and arrests of over 70 people.  The death toll has now exceeded well over 4,000 people, and schools and hospitals have been ruthlessly attacked. Unfortunately, Palestine is not the only place impacted by Israel at the moment. Israel has been bombing Syria, which since 2011, has been in a devastating state of war and crisis. Twelve years after protesters in Syria first demonstrated and rose up against the four-decade rule of the Assad family, hundreds of thousands of Syrians have been killed and nearly thirteen million people—more than half the country's prewar population—have been displaced. Amid war, the Syrian people are suffering an economic crisis, and a massive earthquake at the start of 2023 cast much of the population in the north into further despair.Follow Ola and Ilham on social media:Ola: www.instagram.com/slowreadingola Ilham: www.instagram.com/ilhamreadsBooks mentioned in this episode:Palestine:ClassicsGhassan Kanafani: Men in the Sun, Palestine's Children Emile Habiby: The Secret Life of Saeed the Pessoptimist Halim Barakat: Days of Dust (was meant to mention this book but I forgot but it's really good!)Poetry of Mahmoud DarwishNon-fiction/memoirs: Palestine writers:Edward Said: The Question of Palestine + his memoir Out of Place Mourid Barghouti: I Saw Ramallah Rashid Khalidi, The Hundred Years' War on Palestine (history)Jewish writers:Ilan Pappe: The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine + Ten Myths About Israel Avi Shlaim: Three Worlds Massoud Hayoun: When We Were Arabs (forgot to mention this, it's another memoir about Jews from Arab lands, really essential for understanding Zionism)Contemporary:Isabella Hammad: The ParisianAdania Shibli: Minor Detail Ahlam Bsharat: Trees of the Absentees + Code Name: Butterfly Mohammed El-Kurd: Rifqa (poetry) Syria:-In Praise of Hatred, Khaled Khalifa-What Strange Paradise, Omar El Akkad-The Middle East Crisis Factory, Iyad El-Baghdadi and Ahmed Gatnash-We Crossed a Bridge and It Trembled: Voices from Syria, Wendy Pearlman-Burning Country: Syrians in Revolution and War, Robin Yassin-Kassab and Leila Al-Shami-You Have Not Yet Been Defeated, Alaa Abd El-Fattah-The Impossible Revolution: Making Sense of the Syrian Tragedy by Yassin al-Haj Saleh-The Book Collectors: A Band of Syrian Rebels and the Stories That Carried Them Through a War by Delphine MinouiSupport the show

Israel and Palestine: A Political Solution

Speak, even when your voice shakes, and you feel like rage crying. This special episode provides greater historical context to Israel and Palestine, elevates voices on the frontlines of the humanitarian crisis, demands an immediate ceasefire and a united global democratic alliance to end the genocide of Palestinians, and amplifies the calls for a political solution.  The crisis cannot be solved militarily. The bombs raining down on the open air prison of Gaza is a genocide–another Nakba, the Arabic word for “catastrophe”–which in 1948 saw the brutal mass forced displacement of around a million Palestinians with the founding of Israel. We're witnessing the long awaited war by indicted corrupt criminal and Putin ally Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's longest serving prime minister, desperate to cling to power, even if that means turning Israel into another theocratic dictatorship in the region. The racist, genocidal movement that assassinated former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin for signing the Oslo Accords, a path towards peace and potentially a two-state solution, brought Netanyahu to power. And now his government of Stephen Millers is determined to finish off Palestinians, mass-murdering several thousands, including a significant number of children.  Secretary of State Antony Blinken published a call for a ceasefire on Twitter, only to delete it after Republicans protested. That and more of the US response, what it means for the civilians on both sides of the conflict, the US election and more are discussed in this extra furious episode. This week's bonus episode will include answers to questions submitted by listeners subscribed at the Democracy Defender level and higher, and a special on-the-ground look at the upcoming Virginia state elections and the recent voter-purge by Governor Glenn Youngkin. On the second of October 2018, Jamal Khashoggi, arguably Saudi Arabia's most prominent journalist and an outspoken critic of the country's government, walked into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to collect documents he needed to get married. But he never reappeared.Investigators later concluded that Jamal Khashoggi had been ambushed, forcibly restrained, drugged and asphyxiated. His body was then dismembered, stuffed into bags and discarded by fifteen Saudi assassins connected to the crown prince, Mohammed bin-Salman, or MBS.Six months after the murder, Iyad el-Baghdadi, a prominent writer and a friend to Jamal Khashoggi, was visited by the Norwegian Security services at his home in Oslo, where they informed him that there was a credible threat to his life. Here he describes what happened and how his life has changed since then.

Why is the Middle East a crisis factory, and how can it be fixed? What does the future look like for its 500 million people? And what role should the West play? Iyad El-Baghdadi and Ahmed Gatnash tell the story of the modern Middle East as a series of broken promises. They chart the entrenchment of tyranny, terrorism and foreign intervention, showing how these systems of oppression simultaneously feed off and battle each other. Exploring demographic, economic and social trends, the authors paint a picture of the region's prospects that is alarming yet hopeful. Finally, they present ambitious and thoughtful ideas that reject both aggressive military intervention and cynical deals with dictators. This book, written by two children of the region, is about the failures of history, and the reasons for hope. The Middle East Crisis Factory offers a bold vision for those seeking peace and democracy in the Middle East. One of those warned is Iyad El-Baghdadi, a long-time critic of Arab authoritarian regimes, who lives in political asylum in Norway using social media to challenge what he calls the Arab Tyrants. In this week’s episode of the Sinica Podcast, taped live in New York at the law offices of Dorsey and Whitney on June 19, Kaiser and Jeremy chat about DEF CON, the world’s premier hacker convention, which was — to the surprise of many — held in Beijing this May, and sponsored by Baidu. They also discuss U.S-China cyber relations throughout the years, including some of the finer emerging contours that define this relationship. Joining us are Kevin Collier, a reporter for BuzzFeed who reported on the conference from Beijing, and Priscilla Moriuchi, a 12-year veteran of the National Security Agency (NSA) who is now head of nation-state threat security at Recorded Future. Recommendations: Jeremy: Arab Tyrant Manual, a podcast hosted by Iyad El-Baghdadi and Ahmed Gatnash that discuss authoritarianism and freedom in the Middle East. Priscilla: Crimetown, a podcast about organized crime and political corruption in Providence, RI in the 80’s and 90’s that is sure to please fans of Serial and S-Town alike. Kevin: Tyler Childers, an authentic country musician who “cut his teeth” in Kevin’s Kentucky hometown. Kaiser: Free Salamander Exhibit, an experimental metal band that Kaiser says has “crazy chops.”
