In times of doubt and seasons of change, we can know that God is sure to keep his promises.--We are going to see this in two pretty different thoughts from this text.--First, I want to show you God's faithfulness to his promises at Jacob's Well.-Second, I want to show you HOW God is faithful to his promises in the person of Christ.

Jacob's Well and Living Water
Pastor Chad preaches on the Gospel Text for the Third Sunday in Lent. Jesus encounters a Samaritan woman at Jacob's Well. The encounter crosses all sorts of social barriers and in doing so changes everything about our relationship to God.
"The well is deep, and you have no bucket." What does it mean for the Samaritan Woman to encounter Jesus at Jacob's Well? What is it for us to meet Jesus there? (Preached by The Rev. David Sibley; in the Sermon, the language of Jacob' Well and the Samaritan Woman originate from a sermon given by John Green at Christ Church Cathedral, Indianapolis on 25 March 2014; they speak well to the present time, and citation is appropriate.)
A first-century Jew like Jesus of Nazareth would have seen God in a very intimate way. From an ancient Jewish perspective, the one God—“the LORD” or “I Am” (Hebrew YHWH) (Exodus 3:15)—is not just the Creator, but the Bridegroom, a divine person whose ultimate desire is to be united to his people. Salvation is a relationship that is so intimate, so permanent, so sacrificial, and so life-giving that it can only be described as a marriage between Creator and creatures. On the Third Sunday of Lent, the Church turns to the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at Jacob's Well. Music is composed and performed by Russ Ronnebaum.
The significance of Jacob's Well at Sychar is explored in both testaments in terms of finding peace, dealing with the past and giving purpose. Slides from talk: Jacob's Well

Compass Church welcomes Dr. Phil Nordin, who delivers a timely message around Jesus' interaction with the Samaritan woman at Jacob's Well.
“Who has believed what we have heard? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? He grew up before him like a young plant and like a root out of dry ground. He didn’t have an impressive form or majesty that we should look at him, no appearance that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering who knew what sickness was. He was like someone people turned away from; he was despised, and we didn’t value him. Yet he himself bore our sicknesses, and he carried our pains; but we in turn regarded him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds. We all went astray like sheep; we all have turned to our own way; and the Lord has punished him for the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth. Like a lamb led to the slaughter and like a sheep silent before her shearers, he did not open his mouth. He was taken away because of oppression and judgment; and who considered his fate? For he was cut off from the land of the living; he was struck because of my people’s rebellion. He was assigned a grave with the wicked, but he was with a rich man at his death, because he had done no violence and had not spoken deceitfully. Yet the Lord was pleased to crush him severely. When you make him a guilt offering, he will see his seed, he will prolong his days, and by his hand, the Lord’s pleasure will be accomplished. After his anguish, he will see light and be satisfied. By his knowledge, my righteous servant will justify many, and he will carry their iniquities. Therefore I will give him the many as a portion, and he will receive the mighty as spoil, because he willingly submitted to death, and was counted among the rebels; yet he bore the sin of many and interceded for the rebels.” Isaiah 53:1-12 CSB Already, But Not Yet ”Dear friends, don’t be surprised when the fiery ordeal comes among you to test you as if something unusual were happening to you. Instead, rejoice as you share in the sufferings of Christ, sot hat you may also rejoice with great joy when his glory is revealed.” 1 Peter 4:12-13 ”I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I conquered the world.” John 16:33
Pastor Tyler is speaking this morning on what it means to see with 20/20 vision looking backwards in order to see what God has in store looking forward and how we learn to invest our time in people as Jesus did. He uses the example of Jesus actions at Jacob's well with the Samaritan woman. He asks her for a drink of water only to offer her in return a refreshing supply of true spiritual water that never runs dry. Jesus takes the time to invest in her even in his weariness as an example for us to learn how to invest ourselves in others in a similar fashion. Ministry requires investment and God promises an eternal result as we're faithful to obey His promptings. Listen in to learn how to pray and fast seeking His spiritual wisdom through the wisdom of the Holy Spirit...

This weekend our Legacy Concert of Prayer was not a music concert, although there was lots of great music! Instead, it was a time of concerted, focused prayer. It was a time where we were led through different kinds of prayer and worship. It was an experiential time of learning that was designed to deepen our prayer and worship life as individuals and as a community. As part of our Legacy series this springboards us into a week of prayer for our church. Let us all be praying this week that we are in step with the Spirit at Jacob's Well, and making proper preparations for the next twenty years of ministry and beyond.
One of the leading controversial topics in the church, the Holy Spirit is available to empower us so that we don't have to fight on our own. Still available today, just as it was in the early days of the church. Rev. Howard Ellis of Jacob's Well Ministries has developed this teaching over the past 40 years of ministry, and it is part of the Five Days of Healing seminar that Jacob's Well hosts 2-3 times per year in the Brantford, Ontario, Canada area. Life In The Spirit - Jacob's Well & Jesus' Fountain - Week 5 - 7 - 1-18 Audio by City Church Cville
Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well, recorded in John 43-42, is very overlooked for the most part. Especially, for what Jesus reveals to her, and ultimately to us, about worship. It is during Jesus exchange with the Samaritan woman that Jesus tells her that "the true worshipers that God desires are those that will worship him in the spirit and in truth." Although, the setting for this encounter is no where near Jerusalem or the temple inside the walls of that city, what Jesus said about worship has now been interpreted as primarily having to do with what takes place inside of a church during a "worship service." A setting that has very little in common with the setting that Jesus made this prouncement or why. This episode not only addresses this, but it also addresses how prejudice and even racism interferes with what God considers to be worship in the spirit and in truth without our even realizing it.
"Belong" is one of our Five Commitments at Jacob's Well, and is one of the first tools we receive as God's people. We're handed identity, we belong. But we have a way of feeling like we don't belong, based on human stuff. Jesus says different. And it's important to focus on peace and who we are TOGETHER. It's a positive, not a negative, and the other Commitments need "Belong" to have substance.

Download | Subscription (FREE) In this episode, Rev. Gibson and Johnny Gwin discuss the themes of meeting God and Living Water. What would it be like to meet Jesus? What would you say? Would you know who he was? Jesus's interaction with the Samarian women at Jacob's Well and his meeting with Nicodemus shows us a very "human" and intimate conversation with the people around him. Jesus seems to be an excellent listener and a teacher in these gospel stories from John. What could we learn about life and ourselves from such a personal conversation with Jesus? Moses and his Israelites are also discussed, and we are reminded of the "human nature" to not only turn on each other but God when things look bad and not going our way? Beverly illustrates how Moses shows us (in Exodus) that God is always among us and he provides when we are in need. Is our faith and spirit strong enough to see God when we think he has abandoned us? Hear Johnny actually describe the show summary accurately this week, and he manages to sneak in a Jean Grey (from X-Men) and Bruce Lee mention into today's conversation. What You Will Hear: > Discussion of "setting a scene" with the intimate conversations that John describes in his Gospel (Nicodemus & Samarian Women at well) > The Samarian Woman description and her significance > The well at the center of the city and the importance of Jacob's Well > Living Water = Moses delivers from a rock and Jesus discusses how we will deliver water that will quench your thirst forever > Theme of "Living Water" - not stagnant but "flowing" from one person to another. Spirit and faith should be "flowing" through us and to each other > "I am He" - how Jesus knew the Samarian woman > The "human exchange" between Jesus and the Samarian Women > The place of Samarian women in the Jewish world > Jesus is the "deep listener" that can hear what reverberates through your soul > Jean Grey (X-Men) and her burden of knowing what everyone thinks and feels > To know what to do with someone's pain and weight when you can recognize it > Third week of Lenten Journey of Spirit: meeting God > Over 40 years the Israelites turn on and quarrel with Moses many times > The actions and complaints of the Israelites is the story of "US." > Beverly shares that she has given up "Facebook" for Lent > Moses mighty Staff and his connection and relationship with God > When things don't go our way - like the Israelites - we pick up a rock, shake or fist to the sky and blame God. > Faith allows us to come back and God will provide for us > Hearing God getting "tired and over" the Israelites and their straying from Him > 40 years in the desert? Moses must have wandered in circles > The controversy of where Mt. Sinai was located > Biblical maps gives some readers a grounding to a place to help us understand a story and lesson > Fleeing and hiding in "the Wilderness" is not a bad thing - it can be a regrouping and reenergizing time > Jesus's ministry and journey in the wilderness until he "points his face toward Jerusalem" > Moses also used "the Wilderness" to prepare to what was coming > Meeting your Yoda in the Wilderness > Finding focus and learning how to work without distractions - Cal Newport's Deep Work best-selling book > Withdrawing from society and going deep in your inner world, thoughts, and feelings to find some clarity > Carl Jung had to build a sanctuary to find his center and focus > The importance and power of a retreat > JK Rowling's technique to finish the last "Harry Potter" book > Going deep to see God, Jesus, the world around us and the "real you" > The difficult of judging ourselves > Deeping diving into understanding ourselves (Christ Church Cathedral) with Ministry Architects > Deep Listening and the Deep Listening Band and their music of reverberation and evolution of participating with the environment > "Going with the flow" just like water > Bruce Lee and his martial arts analogy of "being like water, not like the rock" > Emerging from "The Wilderness" and the importance of the "parking lot" conversations with others > Spiritual growth and opportunity in every interaction with people and places > Are we the same person at 18 and at 38? > Shutting out the world, looking inward, focusing and listening to others to discover who we are and what makes us happy > Cal Newport's view of "letting go" of social media > Balancing between the world of "letting go", the wilderness and the hustle and bustle of the world > Of the Earth vs. not of this Earth balancing battle > The lessons and the message from the discipline of Lent > Johnny admits that excess social media and the disruptive world getting in the way of prayer and spirituality makes him as quarrelsome as the Israelites in the desert > Living a life that embraces "minimalism" > The world and culture of "MORE" > Lent is a good time for attendance at Church > The purpose of a Sabbatical > Katherine Deaton's living artisanal water well > The Baptism - living water giving to you from a stagnant rock > Pulpit To Pew suddenly turns into a financial podcast concerning oil, artisanal water, and the upcoming water supply bubble Readings Referenced: Exodus 17:1-7 Romans 5:1-11 John 4:5-42 What do you think about Pulpit To Pew? From John chapter 4, Jesus meets the Samaritan woman at Jacob's Well. She has searched for satisfaction everywhere the world tells you to find it, and found nothing. Jesus tells her that He can give her Living Water and a eternally satisfying life.
In the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well we see Jesus symbolically repairing the broken relationships between the southern and northern kingdoms while living into the role of the bridegroom that the author places upon him. The narrative is instructive for us as the Body of Christ today as we look a broken church that needs much repair.
