Honestly, we were a little worried about New Mexico delivering a good old fashioned haunted location, but of course they delivered. We always love a good haunted hotel, but the good news and bad news of this one is one of the rooms of the hotel is so haunted, they have prohibited access to it from guests. Even going as far as to padlock the room. So what can be so scary that they have to lock the patrons out, or in this case, keep the bad spirits locked in? Listen to find out for yourself. “We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere… hatred and bitterness can never cure the disease of fear, only love can do that.” These words, written by Martin Luther King, beckon us to a search for truth and meaning in the quest for racial justice and human rights everywhere. Two of our guests today, Ken Hill and Gina Whitaker, spent three weeks traveling the U.S. Civil Rights Trail this past October through Mississippi and Alabama. Everywhere they went, everyone they met and all the stories they heard added pieces of the puzzle that eventually formed a picture of our single garment of destiny, and highlighted our network of mutuality. What they learned was that we are all connected, and that Martin Luther King had it right…only love can overcome hate. The Deep South. A place neither Ken Hill nor Gina Whitaker ever thought they would visit, was the scene. People like Terry Chestnut, our third guest today, filled in many missing pieces of the puzzle with his deep love for Selma, Alabama–his hometown–and all the people and all the places in Selma where major battles of the American Civil Rights movement of the 1950's and 1960's took place and are recorded in history. Terry will share his story today, and we are certain that his perspective will move our listeners. So, welcome to the People of Faith for Justice 26th podcast and to our guests, Gina, Ken and Terry. Social justice concerns in 1960 brought her to the Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara as a teenager, and she's never looked back. A social justice activist for 64 years, Gina went on a pilgrimage to the Deep South in October, 2022 with her husband, Ken. Her experiences there transformed her, and brought her attention to the fact that though life in the Deep South is better than it was during the 50's and 60's, the job is not yet finished. Gina continues her work for racial justice, immigration justice and voting rights in between spending time with her two granddaughters, Jimi, 2 1/2, and Rubi, 7 months. She lives in Arroyo Grande with her husband, Ken Hill, and their cat, Sufi. Ken Hill is Gina Whitaker's husband and resident of the Central Coast for the last three decades. Ken is now retired from a long engineering career in electronics, computers and software in Southern California and on the Central Coast. He has rooted himself in relationship to family, community and the quest of grounding our communities in love and grace; without these, all else is for naught. At the heart of that community are his wife, stepsons, grandchildren, sister, brother in-law and extended family bonded in blood relation and shared purpose. Ken is a passionate member of Unitarian Universalists San Luis Obispo, participates in People of Faith for Justice (PFJ) through the Central Coast Center for Ecological Civilization and can be found at many events around the Central Coast trying to transform us all into a beloved community. Terry Chestnut was born and raised in Selma, Alabama, the 4th of six children, to J.L. Chestnut, Jr. and mother Vivian Chestnut. J.L. was the first Black attorney in Selma, and was also Dr. Martin Luther King's attorney, of which Terry is very proud! Terry graduated from Dillard University in New Orleans with a double major in Mass Communication/Criminal justice, and a minor in Music. Terry has a great love for Selma Alabama, and has spent the last three and a half years working as a tour guide for groups from all over the world who visit Selma, Alabama to learn about the 1960's American civil rights and voting rights movement. With Terry as their guide, however, they learn much more than facts, and experience Terry's great love for his hometown and the people in it. In addition to the many tours he conducts year round, Terry finds time to host a daily radio show, The Cool Jazz Cafe, as well as organize all the entertainment at the historic St. James Hotel in downtown Selma. He is available to speak nationwide. SUPPORT PFJ We greatly appreciate your financial support so that we can continue to educate, advocate and pray for the things that matter to our organization. By Davy Crockett You can read, listen, or watch Many women participated in six-day races during the 1800s. With the great publicity of the Astley Belt Six-Day races, and the popularity of the new go-as-you-please format inviting running, the six-day race exploded into a craze in America and Great Britain. Of the 850 total starters in 85 six-day races in 1879, more than 120 starters were women. The details of the 17 women's races held that year were fascinating, full of surprising drama, and needs to be remembered in this history, especially given the strong discriminating feelings toward women athletics in that era and for the century that followed. Please help the ultrarunning history effort continue by signing up to contribute a little each month through Patreon. Visit https://www.patreon.com/ultrarunninghistory Women's International Six-Day Gilmore's Garden After the Third Astley Belt Race was concluded in New York City's Gilmore's Garden (Madison Square Garden) on March 15, 1879, (see episode 109), it was quickly announced that a “Grand Ladies' International Six-Day Race” would also be held at Gilmore's Garden in less than two weeks. It would be the first “go-as-you-please” (running-allowed) six-days race for women. Yes, women would start running to the shock of the Victorian Age public. Because of scheduling conflicts in the building, the race would need to span across a Sunday. At first, they were told they would be allowed to run on Sunday. However, the police chief later decided that they would have to take a 24-hour rest on Sunday during the race. For the first time, a women's ultrarunning race would include spectacular prizes for the winner. The first-place prize would be $1,000 ($28,750 value today) in cash along with a belt similar to the Astley belt, called the “Walton Belt” made by Tiffany valued at $250. The manager of the race was Francis Theodore “Plunger” Walton (1837-1911), a racehorse man and manager of the St. James Hotel in New York City. A hefty entrant's fee of $200 was required to ensure that only the most serious women pedestrians would participate. All women who reached 325 miles, would get their fee back. Many women athletes expressed interest, including a number of amateur pedestrians trying to break into the sport. The same track for the Third Astley Belt race would be used. Army tents were provided for each competitor and three medical attendants would take care of them during the race. The Start On the evening of March 27, 1879, as a promenade concert was being held, many women accompanied by friends. carried bundles, bedding, trunks, and other possessions to the row of white tents in Gilmore's Garden. At 11 p.m., the eighteen women starters listened to race rules that included a new rule against dogging the runner's heels ahead, a rule that wouldn't be enforced very well. The ladies were arranged in four rows and started with the word “go,” accompanied by music from the band and the cheers of about 1,000 people. Exilda La Chapelle, of Canada, was the early favorite, but few bets were made. The news press was generally unfavorable about having women participating in such an event. They wrote, “The pitiful spectacle of 18 women starting on a six days' walk for money prizes was witnessed by about 1,000 spectators.” New York City's foremost pedestrian promoter, William B. Curtis, (1837-1900), founder of the New York Athletic Club, refused to have anything to do with the race other than collecting the money to guarantee the promised prize package of $1,750. It was reported, “As soon as the eighteen were well under way, the fun began. The crowd seemed to regard the affair much in the same farcical light as they would a burlesque entertainment at a theatre. They were a strange lot. Tall and short, heavy and slim, young and middle-aged,

The exhibit will be at the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council in Marshall May 12 through June 17, then spend August at the Crossing Arts Alliance gallery in Brainerd. Adam Wiltgen, residency coordinator and development director at the Anderson Center at Tower View, is enjoying the ongoing collaboration between Minnesota artists and poets through nearby Red Wing Arts. This year is the 21st annual juried Poet Artist Collaboration, which asks artists to illustrate selected original poems. The result, Wiltgen said, stretches visual artists outside their comfort zone to create something new. Wiltgen recommends visitors check out Jacob Yeates's visual response to Casey Patrick's poem “Medusa,” where the hyper-realistic image changes and morphs; and Cole Redhorse Jacobson's “provoking artwork” in response to Gwen Westerman's poem on the significance of the Mississippi River for our wildlife and our collective wellbeing. Courtesy of Red Wing Arts Jacob Yeates illustrates a poem by Casey Patrick. The exhibit is on display at Red Wing Arts through May 15, with Thursday night poetry readings running through that date. Red Wing Arts has created a chapbook of this year's collaborations. A reception of the participating poets and visual artists will be held Friday starting at 6 p.m. at the St. James Hotel in downtown Red Wing and is open to the public. Amy Garretson of the Rochester Arts Center has her tickets for the Mid West Music Fest in Winona Friday and Saturday. The two-day event offers a full line-up of artists from the region performing indie rock, pop synth, classic folk and more on multiple outdoor and indoor stages. Garretson said it's a great opportunity to discover the bars, coffee shops, and other venues in the Mississippi River town on a spring weekend. She's looking forward to catching headliners Polica, Haley, and Bad Bad Hats. Proof of full vaccination or negative PCR test within 72 hours of event start is required. Garretson offers a tip: VIP tickets to this Mid West Music Fest also include admission to a sister event in LaCrosse, Wisconsin in September.

The St. James Hotel in Selma Alabama is one of the oldest buildings in the state. Built in 1837, the hotel was first used by soldiers in the Civil war as an outpost. After the war, the St. James became headquarters for the notorious outlaw, Jesse James and his gang of outlaws. And legend has it, Mr. James never checked out. --Get new Southern Haunts merch here: https://southernhauntspodcast.bigcartel.comMusic in this episode: "The Haunting Of Lake" originally composed and produced by "Vivek Abhishek" https://youtu.be/32B0WU0Y7fsandForgotten by REPULSIVEMusic from Uppbeat (free for Creators!):https://uppbeat.io/t/kisnou/name-of-the-nightLicense code: EV7R4V5RO9WKTRQH--Thanks for listening and be sure to let me know what you think HERELooking for more episodes?
