Hour 1 Boomer is ill and his voice is weak after attending what might have been Matt Martin's final Islanders game last night, where they discussed his career. Before Jerry's update, a caller offered a snake-related throat remedy for Boomer. Jerry has the audio of the Mets' loss to the Twins due to a Francisco Lindor error and strikeout. The Knicks/Pistons playoff schedule is out, starting Saturday, Monday, and Thursday. Travis Hunter implied he'll only play football if he can play both offense and defense. Gio then shared the story of Rosie the turkey from Roosevelt Island seeking a mate in the city, leading to a discussion about catching turkeys and calls from those who have encountered them. Hour 2 Juan Soto noted he's being pitched differently without Aaron Judge batting behind him, which Gio sees as an explanation, not an excuse. Boomer viewed it as a compliment to Judge, not a slight to Pete Alonso, while Gio thinks sensitive fans are overreacting. Soto's presence benefits Alonso. Before Jerry's update, Gio reminisced about old wedding invites, followed by audio clips of Jerry discussing divorce. They joked about using a Chef IQ to check Boomer's fever. The Yankees won, and Matt Martin played his emotional final home game for the Islanders, with goodbye audio clips from various sports figures played. Finally, someone on X shared a Vegas flu story similar to Boomer's, and Boomer had a lunch meeting where Gustav Klimt was discussed. Hour 3 Wally Szczerbiak believes the Knicks should dominate their series, implying locker room issues if they don't. Gio thinks Karl-Anthony Towns has a big chance to prove his championship mettle and shed the "soft" label with multiple high-scoring, high-rebounding games. Before Jerry's update, they used the Chef IQ and found Boomer has a 102 fever, leading to a clip from 'Back To School' referencing Gustav Klimt, who Gio supposedly resembles. Jerry recapped the Mets' loss, Yankees' win, and NBA news. The hour ended with Gio discussing a Karen Read documentary on MAX. Hour 4 Bill Belichick and his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, are receiving attention, and a reporter obtained Belichick's emails via the Freedom of Information Act. Gio joked about Hudson's potential post-breakup career in bikini betting picks. They discussed the controversy surrounding a Braves reporter asking a girl for her number on air. Jerry's update covered the Mets' loss due to a Lindor error, the Yankees' win, and Trae Young's ejection. Evan Roberts is confident the Knicks will win their series. The Nets GM discussed their free agency targets. Shedeur Sanders' Steelers interview attire caused debate, which Kay Adams addressed. The Moment of the Day involved using the Chef IQ to check Boomer's fever. The show concluded with a discussion about Matt Martin's likely final Islanders game and how fans treated him, compared to Rangers fans and Chris Kreider, followed by talk about a 400+ lb NFL draft prospect.

Growing up in public housing on Roosevelt Island in the middle of New York City’s East River, Elie Gamburg went to sleep every night staring at the city’s remarkable skyline from his bedroom window. His father was an artist and his mother a mathematician, so, “I guess I sort of had to do architecture if nothing else.”  Gamburg is a Design Principal at KPF, a global architecture firm known for designing some of the most innovative and high-profile buildings around the world. Working from New York and London, with a lot of travel around the world in between, Elie has been innovating for cities for over 20 years. His work is consistently sensitive to human scale, urban context, and sustainability. Some of the more famous projects he has worked on at KPF are the Seaport Square Master Plan and Channelside in Boston, Atlantis The Royal in Dubai and NYU Shanghai.  As a kid, everything was about buildings. Drawing them, looking at them, reading about them. After high school, he spent a summer at Cornell University, to see if he was cut out for his life’s ambition. Unsurprisingly, he was. Much of his time is still spent at school; he’s taught studios at his alma maters, Cornell and Harvard. He was an adjunct professor at NYIT for eight years and has served as a guest critic at Yale to name a few.  Listen in as Vince and Elie discuss how 100 years ago New York was the Dubai of the times, the concept of Central Social Districts, and why he has Ganesha, the god of wisdom, mischief and fun on his desk.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Taking a big bite out of life, brother/co-host Brian has returned from a birthday celebration trip to New York City and he's back and telling us all about it. He shares about his accessible travel and airport experiences at Toronto Pierson, JFK, and LaGuardia, the music show “An Evening With Ida and Tsunami” at Bowery Ballroom he attended with friend/Outlook guest Nefertiti Matos Olivares on Birthday Eve, and another round (after his experience in London, England) and again he set up an exploration of a city with greeter organisation Big Apple Greeters to be shown around by a local along with meeting up with friends from around the state, including sushi with an upcoming Outlook guest. His snapshot of NYC and most of its boroughs includes a tour of NYC transport including a tactile map of the subway system and its history (one puzzle pieced put together at a time) found Brian checking out the tactile further with an exhibit of subway station turnstyles through the years and an accessible touch tour of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. For us at Outlook though, it wouldn't be the same without audio to tell a fuller tale along with hearing about a few wild New York City encounters with security guards, allowing Brian to get a broader, more personalized feel of the place he's in. Check out audio from the live show he attended, his latest subway and other NYC transport and being live at Grand Central Terminal, and his special time spent on Roosevelt Island and The East River. And time in New York wouldn't be the same, especially a first visit, without stopping in Central Park to listen to some live saxophone music. Brian shares both audio and Be My AI image descriptions of some of the photos he took for sighted family and friends to see what he did, it's a full multi-sensory glimpse of the landmark New York City as we meet Brian beneath the big clock. At one point, he stands with his NYC local guide at FDR's statue there on Roosevelt Island, with The United Nations right there and the words of Roosevelt clearly underscoring some of the dangerous changes sweeping the States these days. Plus, also on The Island, they make a brief stop at the Accessibility Services booth to find out if they have any information for that spot available in braille. Stay tuned for the answer. Along with a sharing of some comforting cuisine prepared by a dear friend, plenty of King of the Hill watched, and a homestay at a Manhattan apartment, with the added benefit of getting to explore NYC with the blind leading the blind, he won't ever forget his first Big Apple experience shown to him by its locals. Pennsylvania has graced the world with an inordinate number of influential women throughout its history but looking with a sharper lens at four women in particular highlights not just their achievements, but also key trends in the U.S. and Pennsylvania in the 1800’s. Dr. Christine Senecal, Medieval Historian, shared some of the most important women from Pennsylvania whose lives made a positive impact on the world today. Mary Cassatt was the only American to exhibit alongside the French Impressionists in France. Cassatt’s artwork was very radical for her time, that is still celebrated to this day. “So, she did many pictures and paintings of women with children, and while that had been a pretty common scene in art, like Renoir did a lot of that, he was an imperious artist, she tended to focus on women, the labor that women did in care taking. So, if you look at a Renoir and you look at, um, like the women with the children, they're both smiling, sort of smiling for the camera, so to speak. Mary Cassatt's women are like tending to the children. And there's a lot of love and affection in her paintings, but also it shows women working. Moreover, there's pictures of women, many women, looking intently at things.” Nellie Bly was an investigative journalist who was known for her undercover reporting on a mental asylum, her trip around the world, and her advocacy for women’s rights. “She would throw herself into some news, a kind of important journalistic story. The most infamous or famous of this is a piece she wrote called Ten Days in the Madhouse. Off of the coast of New York, Manhattan, there's an island, it's an island that's now called Roosevelt Island and there was a woman's lunatic asylum, and it was supposed to be really corrupt. Nellie Bly got herself into the asylum. She did it by like going overnight, like she didn't let herself sleep. And so, she looked all crazy. And she checked herself into a kind of like dormitory to get into it and acted really crazy. Once she was in, she was eventually accepted into the woman's lunatic asylum. She was, you know, able to really record the horrible abuses and broke the story.” Listen to the podcast to hear about Union Organizer Fannie Sellins, and abolitionist Sarah Mapps Douglass.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Get the book: https://repeaterbooks.com/product/walking-the-streets-walking-the-projects-adventures-in-social-democracy-in-nyc-and-dc/A walk through the remnants of a social democratic America, and an argument about its future. In the 1960s, a novel ideology about cities, and what was best for them, emerged in New York. Pushing against the state planning of the time, it held that cities were at their best when they were driven from the bottom-up and when organic, unplanned processes were allowed to run their course, in a spontaneous “ballet of the street”. Cities were at their worst, however, when the state stepped in, demolishing lively old neighbourhoods and erecting giant, sterile, empty “projects”. This book uses the method of this ideology — walking — to test how true it actually is about the “capital of the twentieth century”, New York City, with a brief interlude in the capital, Washington DC.The “projects” that are walked in this book range from cultural complexes in Manhattan to New Deal-era public housing developments in Brooklyn, Harlem and Queens, from the social experiment of Roosevelt Island to Communist housing co-operatives in the Bronx, from the union-driven rebuilding of the Lower East Side to DC's magnificent Metro. For all their many flaws, they prove that Americans could, in fact, plan and build fragments of a better society, which survive and sometimes thrive today in one of the unequal places on earth. Walking the Streets/Walking the Projects takes a hard look at these enclaves, and asks what a new generation of American socialists might be able to learn from them.Support Zer0 Books and Repeater Media on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/zer0repeaterSubscribe: https://www.patreon.com/zer0repeaterFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/ZeroBooks/Twitter: https://twitter.com/zer0books, https://twitter.com/RepeaterBooks

It's an all new That Real Blind Tech show where our show notes are written and not corrected by any A.I. Allison, Brian, and Jeanine get together to recap and give our thoughts on all the big announcements from WWDC 24.   We start off with a story about a phone booth, yes, a phone booth.   Elon Musk has gotten a remote tribe in the Amazon connected to the internet, and you would never guess what has happened!   We then discuss the pilot for a new sitcom called Don't Look Now. This sitcom is all about the blind starring the blind, and produced by some of the blind. There will be a very private screening of the sitcom in Orlando, Florida on Saturday, July 6, 2024. If you would like to be invited to the VIP very important people, not visually impaired people please email us at ThatRealBlindTechshow@gmail.com and we will work on getting you an invite to attend the premier event.   We then discuss the XR Access Conference that Brian just attended out on Roosevelt Island in New York City. This then leads us in to a conversation about the Meta Ray Ban Glasses.   We then dive in to our recap of this year's WWDC. We start off discussing the newly announced Apple Intelligence. And after years of false promises will Siri finally get smarter? We discuss some of the things the new Siri will supposedly be able to do. And here is how Siri will work with ChatGPT in iOS 18. And there are a bunch of new writing tools that will be powered by A.I. We then discuss all the new A.I. features coming to mail.     The iPhone, iPad, and Mac will be getting a new Password Manager application. The app will also work on your Window devices.   In iOS 18 and iPad 18 customizing your Home Screen will be a lot easier. And thankfully the global issue of iOS not supporting RCS messaging will be over. Control Center will become a lot more useful. Image Playground is another new app coming to iPhones and Macs. And there is a massive redesign coming to the Photos app.   We then discuss all the new features coming to the iPad which are pretty much the same as the iPhone except you also get a calculator.   Tap to send cash will be a new feature in iOS 18.   Live phone recordings is a new feature that won't end in spectacular disaster.   iOS 18 will now alert you when you are using a slow charger, but there is a catch.   We then discuss all the new features coming to Mac OS Sequoia. iPhone Mirroring is coming to the Mac, but will it be accessible? Safari is also getting a massive revamp with a ton of A.I. features.   Non-verbal gestures are coming to Air Pods near you.   There are a lot of new health and fitness features coming to the Apple Watch along with Live Activities. The translate app makes its way to the watch in Watch OS11.   AppleTV gets a feature called Insight also known on Amazon Prime as X-ray.   And Brian finally gets to find out if the Geek was back!   And of course it's more of Watcha Streaming, Watcha Reading.   To contact That Real Blind Tech Show, you can email us at ThatRealBlindTechShow@gmail.com, join our Facebook Group That Real Blind Tech Show, join us on the Twitter @BlindTechShow , or leave us an old school phone message at 929-367-1005.

He was a PS 6 teammate of Stefan Botarelli, the younger brother of my Churchill teammate and 246th Podcast Guest Fabio Botarelli, Founder & President of Chessability NYC. As the Assemblymember for the 73rd District of New York, Alex serves the Upper East Side, Midtown East, Turtle Bay, Murray Hill, and Sutton Place. He is a fifth-generation New Yorker who was born, raised, and lived his whole life in Manhattan. After PS 6, he attended Wagner and Hunter High School. He then graduated with honors from Cornell University and received a master's in Computer Science from Georgia Tech.As an engineer, he has helped the Department of Justice solve violent crimes in New York City, working with three Manhattan District Attorneys, and building software for local governments' COVID relief programs that helped 50,000 families keep their homes warm and their water running.A community advocate, Alex has organized campaigns that have secured severance pay for fired workers, passed commonsense rent regulation, and reformed government procurement. When Jennilie Brewster first started inquiring about volunteering at the Coler nursing campus on New York City's Roosevelt Island, she never imagined that her work with the residents would have a national impact. Brewster – a writer, painter, and film producer – joins the podcast to discuss her work with OPEN DOORS NYC and the Reality Poets, a group of younger men of color, each affected by gun violence, who all found themselves living at Coler. What started as a powerful creative pursuit soon turned into a nationwide movement in the wake of COVID-19, as the Reality Poets filmed their experiences under lockdown in real time. The resulting film, “Fire Through Dry Grass,” shed a harsh light on the treatment of long-term care residents during the catastrophe, and inspired the Nursing Home Lives Matter movement for change; regular listeners will remember previous episodes with Andres “Jay” Molina and Vincent Pierce, two members of the Reality Poets and vocal activists for nursing home residents of all ages and backgrounds. https://amateurtraveler.com/travel-to-new-york-city/ Hear about travel to New York City as the Amateur Traveler talks to Rebecca Shoval from Not Just Tourists NYC about her adopted home in the city that never sleeps. Why should you go to New York City?  Rebecca says, "I think someone should come to New York for so many reasons. I think it's this incredibly vibrant place. It exudes life and I find walking around the city, it really just gives you energy. It's also this vibrant multicultural place where you can really see the way that there's so much commitment to the city and to the culture and to people really living in something resembling harmony next to each other... or at least ignoring each other and not getting in each other's business. There are so many different things to do." Rebecca says that the city has changed since COVID-19. She highlights how the city has recovered and transformed from the pandemic's impacts, offering a unique perspective on what makes New York a vibrant and dynamic place. Rebecca recommends exploring different boroughs and neighborhoods within New York City. The city's diversity is reflected in its various neighborhoods, each with its own cultural influences and attractions. She particularly recommends Queens, known for its ethnic neighborhoods like Jackson Heights and Flushing, offering immersive food tours and unique experiences. Public transportation is an essential part of the New York experience. Rebecca emphasizes the convenience of using apps like MyMTA, MTA Bus Time, and Train Time to navigate the city's extensive subway, bus, and train systems. The ease of using Apple Pay or Samsung Pay to access public transit now makes travel efficient and hassle-free.  The Staten Island Ferry offers stunning views of the Statue of Liberty, Southern Manhattan, Brooklyn, and New Jersey. It's a free ferry that provides a unique and picturesque perspective of iconic landmarks. Rebecca suggests taking this ferry to get a feel for the city's beauty from the water. The Tenement Museum provides insights into New York's immigrant history, showcasing how various ethnic communities lived and worked. She would recommend that museum or the New York Historical Society instead of a trip to the World Trade Center Memorial for those interested in history. Walking across iconic bridges like the Brooklyn Bridge and Williamsburg Bridge provides breathtaking city views. Additionally, taking city ferries offers an alternative way to see New York's skyline from the water.  Rebecca recommends seeing New York from above but suggests skipping touristy skyscrapers like the Empire State Building and opting for bars or restaurants with panoramic views. The Graduate Hotel's rooftop bar on Roosevelt Island is recommended for its exceptional view of Manhattan and surrounding areas. You have to check out the entertainment scene in New York. Broadway is amazing for its incredible talent and performances, while jazz enthusiasts are advised to explore smaller venues like Arthur's Tavern, Cellar Dog, and Somewhere Nowhere for a more interactive experience. Try visiting parks like Brooklyn Bridge Park, Prospect Park, and Domino's Sugar Factory, which offer unique recreational spaces and city views.  For ionic New York food, you have to consider getting bagels and pizza. Joe's Pizza and Tompkins Square Bagels are Rebecca's favorites. Try street food, especially halal carts which are much more prevalent than hot dog stands in New York these days. Try some cuisine you can't get at home like Caribbean food, regional Chinese, or Burmese cuisine. Eat something at a bodega. Rebecca's favorite restaurants include the experimental restaurant Fulgrances in Brooklyn which is notable for its rotating chefs and wine selection. Another favorite is Little Myanmar in the East Village, which serves Burmese food. She recommends the pasta at Nona Dora's (even the Gluten-free). Reservations are advised due to ongoing restaurant challenges post-pandemic. Use the Rezy app. Wear comfortable shoes, carry a reusable water bottle, and bring a sense of adventure as you explore one of the world's greatest cities, New York City.

We've got a really interesting episode for you all this Thursday, but of course we had to kick It off with a little catch up session on what's been going on and how we have been feeling about time! Especially after covering Missing Time!!!   Morgan then dives into the story of Elizabeth Cochran Seaman, or Nellie Bly. The absolutely iconic female American Journalist that changed the world of journalism with her bold and passionate investigative reporting style when she posed as a patient in order to go undercover in the Women's Lunatic Asylum at Blackwell's Island (now, Roosevelt Island) and expose the brutal mistreatment of patients to the world when she published her piece "Ten Days in a MadHouse"! Elizabeth's work and passion paved the way for other female journalists, making it possible for us to do what we love today- podcast reporting!    Taylar then covers the Winnipeg case of 16 year old Barbara Gayle Stoppel who was found unconscious in the bathroom of her work place on Dec. 23, 1981 after many witnesses reported seeing a "cowboy" in the shop alone with her moment's prior. This case has caused so much confusion and seems to be clouded with corruption, wrongful convictions, and so many questions as to why someone would have done this to Barbara. Taylar's main source for this segment was BarbStoppel.com and Andrew Mikolajewski's book "Stoppel", which is available on the website.   Time is flying by a lot faster these days, it seems. Be sure to take some moments to yourself and be present with those you love! But- you all are still grounded until further notice! Love ya!   Produced by Dear Media

The New York Lunatic Asylum opened its doors in 1839 with a mission to humanely treat the mentally ill of NYC from the tranquil isolation of an island on the East River. However, as the years unfolded, cracks showed, trouble ensued and an intrepid reporter found herself within the institution's walls, reporting its downfall for the world to see.
