"Realities have forced us to remain on diplomatic terms with several dictators," the Pampa Daily News stated in 1958. "U.S. ambassador to the U.N Samantha Power has been forced to look the other way as Saudi Arabia does as it pleases in Yemen," Politico told us in 2016. Biden is being forced to accept the flaws of America's friends," claimed The New York Times earlier this year, 2023. For decades, we've heard the same excuse regarding US foreign policy: 'Our leaders might not agree with the world's dictatorial, reactionary governments, but they're forced –– by some unknown geopolitical dark matter of realpolitik –– to support them for some broader, more noble goal.' Strengthening ties with the governments of Saudi Arabia, India, Egypt, Israel, The Philippines, and other countries under right-wing, human-rights-abusing governance might be a bit unpleasant, but it's the pragmatic thing to do and, therefore, the morally acceptable thing to do. But countries that are not the United States or its allies are never said to be "forced" into carrying out human rights abuses or supporting those that do. They back bombings, ethnic cleansings, the oppression of women for the sport, because they are existentially evil. No outside mysterious entity ever "forces" them to have to make compromises on the altar of "reality." But there is nothing, of course, "forcing" these decisions on our own Western leaders, and in nearly every case, they're simply extensions of preexisting geopolitical relationships, imperialist policies, and arbitrary might-makes-right governance. On this episode, we discuss the media narrative that the U.S. is "forced" to maintain long-beneficial alliances with right-wing regimes, looking at how this suggestion falsely presents the U.S. as an unwilling, but ultimately helpless, participant in repression of human rights around the world. Our guest is author and NYU professor James Peck.

In 1961, an multiracial group of intrepid "Freedom Riders" attempted to desegregate bus stations in some of the most militantly segregationist parts of the Deep South. These courageous civil rights activists, including John Lewis, Diane Nash, Jim Zwerg, and James Peck, encountered shocking violence in the State of Alabama. A bus they were taking was burned down, and several Riders were bloodied & beaten by organized vigilantes who opposed racial integration. Once photographic images & film footage of this brutality received international media coverage, the Kennedy Administration finally intervened to force desegregation of interstate travel facilities. Southern politicians then attempted to get revenge by tricking busloads of impoverished African-American Southerners to head north in the so-called "Reverse Freedom Rides." Meanwhile, Cold War tensions continued to heat up, as the Vienna Summit between John F. Kennedy & Nikita Khrushchev failed to reach a solution to the Berlin crisis, leading the Communists to construct the Berlin Wall to keep East Germans from moving into the capitalist West. Decolonization continued to free global populations from European imperialism, including a violent struggle that gained Algerian independence from France. Some new nations sought neutral non-alignment, while others allied with the Communist bloc. JFK tried to keep these new Third World nations from siding with the Soviets via aid programs such as Food for Peace, the Peace Corps, and the Alliance for Progress in Latin America. However, there was a more coercive side to these US Cold War efforts, as the Kennedy Administration also funded CIA interference into foreign politics, anti-Communist military buildups in Latin nations, and an escalation of US military commitment in South Vietnam. The year closed on an ominous note as both the USA & the USSR began escalating defense spending and nuclear testing.Support the show

Chapter Eleven: Baptism on Wheels This is a sad and violent chapter, and exhibits both the best and worst of humanity. A chapter without King, but about SNCC activists and the Freedom Rides in May of 1961. Tidbits we learn in this chapter: Who used the excuse that he had to help a friend move furniture and avoid a major civil rights action (Freedom Ride)! What city has the worst hospital in the world at this time! Was there a conspiracy by a local government, Ku Klux Klan, to beat civil rights activists for 15 minutes. What does Japan think of white supremacy violence? What minor character could I see myself being. All that and more, and shout outs too John Seignthaler, James Farmer, James Bevel, John Lewis, Albert Bigelow, Simeon Booker, James Peck, Genevieve Hughes, Herbert Harris, Selyn McCollum, Susan Wilbur, Sue Harmon, Jim Zerg and and all the Freedom Riders and of course Diane Nash! Intro music by the Staples Singers “Freedom Highway” 1965.

Harwell Wells, professor of law at Temple University, joins the Business Scholarship Podcast to discuss his article Shareholder Meetings and Freedom Rides: The Story of Peck v Greyhound. In this article, Wells recounts the efforts of Bayard Rustin and James Peck to use the proxy rules and their purchase of Greyhound shares to protest the bus company's segregationist policies. These efforts were ultimately thwarted, Wells explains, by the SEC's re-writing of the proxy rules to undermine civil-rights shareholder activism. This episode is hosted by Andrew Jennings, assistant professor at Brooklyn Law School, with editing by Daniel Hamilton, a third-year student at Brooklyn Law School.
In this episode of Book Dreams, Julie and Eve talk with Charles Person, the youngest and only surviving member of the original Freedom Riders. In May of 1961, thirteen men and women in Washington, D.C. boarded two public buses headed for New Orleans, to test whether states across the South were abiding by the Supreme Court's recent decision forbidding segregation in bus depots, waiting areas, restaurants, and restrooms. Charles was only eighteen at the time. Now, six decades later, he recounts the day his fight for racial equity and justice nearly cost him and his fellow Riders their lives. The author of the recently released Buses Are a Comin': Memoir of a Freedom Rider, Charles tells Eve and Julie how his early experiences with systemic racism led him to become active in the civil rights movement and get on board the bus. Charles also gives vivid and vital oral testimony about the murderous attacks on the Freedom Riders by Klansmen and other white supremacists in Alabama. Those Freedom Riders included some of the leaders of the Civil Rights Movement: Congressman John Lewis, Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) Director James Farmer, CORE Field Secretary Genevieve Hughes, Reverend Benjamin Elting Cox, and writer and pacifist James Peck. After the Freedom Ride, Charles joined the Marines and served for twenty years, including nine months in Vietnam. Today, he lives in Atlanta, where he is a sought-after public speaker. Sam/Paul reads chapter one of Talisman. After years of work, book 1 in the 7 book Peck Chronicles is on sale. Paul reads Chapter 1 A story of determination, courage and family James Peck stands alone on a hillside, staring at a massive, three-toed footprint… and the crushed animal within it. He can’t help wondering if there is a link between the print and the recent unexplained disappearance of his father. Within hours James meets Mendel, a wizard from another world – Denthan – who is trapped in a body that is not his own. Soon they do a deal: James will help Mendel back to Denthan before disaster befalls it; in return, Mendel will help James search for his father. But Denthan is a dangerous place, full of hideous beasts and monsters. And it is about to be consumed by a battle for supremacy… and survival. If James is to stand any chance of saving Denthan – and his family - he must locate a powerful talisman. Except that no-one knows what it looks like. Certainly not James, and not even Mendel. So fast-paced that your heart will pound long after you turn the final page.

Lecture by James Peck, Adjunct Professor New York University, History and East Asian Departments. Author of ‘Ideal Illusions’, a critical study of how the US Government shaped human rights into a potent ideological weapon for purposes having little to do with rights, and everything to do with furthering America’s global reach. Peck was one of the speakers at the International Symposium Human Rights: Ideal Illusions? on 26 March 2012 – The Hague, Netherlands
