Over the past few years and especially now— with COVID-19-related lockdowns necessitating that families stay at home—an increasing number of parents have chosen to home-school their children. This choice stems from several reasons: political views and distrust in the education system; anxiety about their children's safety; or simply as an expression of their right to freedom. In the newest episode of our podcast, Quality Education, Dr. Jameson Brewer, Assistant Professor of Social Foundations of Education at the University of North Georgia and author of ‘Homeschooling: A Guidebook of Practices, Claims, Issues, and Implications', published by Brill, talks in detail about the changing trends in home-schooling practices. His compelling evidence makes us rethink our perception of formal education and lays bare the reality of educating a child without the support of experts or an educational system. We discuss how COVID-19, and socioeconomic, political, and racial status (among other factors), influence a parent's decision of choosing a school for their child. Learn more about your ad choices. Today we look at counter narratives to Teach for All, the global network of affiliate organizations that recruit people to make 2-year commitments teaching in high-need schools. An outgrowth of Teach for America and Teach First in the United Kingdom, Teach for All advances a one-size fits all solution to educational problems in over 53 countries. It is funded by powerful corporations and organizations, such as the Clinton Global Initiative, and has become an important actor in the global education reform movement. But what do former recruits think of Teach for All? How does Teach for All’s carefully crafted message of reform translate into practice? My guests today are Jameson Brewer, Kathleen deMarrais and Kelly L. McFaden who have recently co-edited a volume called Teach for All Counter Narratives. The book is a collection of first-hand accounts where former recruits offer powerful critiques of the organization and its methods. T. Jameson Brewer is an Assistant Professor of Social Foundations of Education at the University of North Georgia where Kelly L. McFaden is a professor. Kathleen deMarrais is a Professor and Department Head in the Department of Lifelong Education, Administration, and Policy at the University of Georgia. https://freshedpodcast.com/tjamesonbrewer-kathleendemarrais-kellylmcfaden/ -- Get in touch! Welcome Back, Jeremy Corray! You will find Jeremy and John Teichmann have a lot in common in this episode, as we go back in time to when the first tapes were delivered to WEP, and an innocent mistake in shipping led to Voltron: Defender of the Universe. Original Series Associate Producer John Teichmann gives Marc and Jeremy a first-hand account of what it was like to be involved with the Voltron phenomenon from the beginning, and what keeps people talking about it to this very day. John identifies some of the key features that made broadcasters buy into the Voltron promise, including excellent stereo sound by Paul Vitello and his team, superior music by John Petersen and Dale Schacker, and great writing by Jameson Brewer, Marc Handler, and the rest of the writing team. John gives insight into a side of the Voltron story we had not ever heard before, and details what he has been doing since Voltron finished its original television run in 1986. All we can say is, when do we get to see Albegas? Thanks for listening!
In part one of a two-part episode, Marc, Mike and Jeremy all interview Marc Handler, the head writer for the Original series after Jameson Brewer, who also wrote the Fleet of Doom special, which brought together the Lion Force Voltron and the Vehicle Voltron teams. Marc Handler was the Head Writer for Voltron: The Third Dimension, the first US-produced 3D animated series. Marc Handler is currently living and working in Shanghai, China, and was the WEP representative that worked with Toei Animation in Japan when WEP commissioned Toei to produce the 20 original episodes of Lion Force Voltron back in 1985. Just to show how much Marc loves the fans, he recorded these two episodes with us between 12:30 AM and 2:45 AM in Shanghai. His enthusiasm is still very strong for Voltron and the fans of the series. Thank you, Marc! Marc gives our hosts a lesson about the original creators of the the Voltron animation from Japan. Humbly, Marc pays homage to the Japanese animators and writers that brought us this wonderful hero and characters that we have loved for 30 years! If you ever wondered what story Marc would pitch for the Live-Action Voltron Movie, you'll hear it here first on the Let's Voltron Podcast. We know you all gave us great questions for Marc Handler. Those questions will all be answered in Part 2 of our interview with Marc Handler, coming next week. So, come back here for Part 2, because Marc Handler will give great insight for writers. If you want to become a writer, or improve on your writing, Marc gives some great tips. Thank you for listening!

The Hardy Family - Andy Hardy was a fictional character played by Mickey Rooney in an extremely successful MGM film series from 1937 to 1958. Spanning over 20 years, the 16 movies were based on characters in the play Skidding by Aurania Rouverol. The initial Hardy film, A Family Affair (1937), was made before a series was contemplated. It featured Lionel Barrymore as Judge Hardy and Spring Byington as Mrs. Hardy, Andy's parents, and Margaret Marquis as Andy's on-again-off-again sweetheart, Polly Benedict. But when the series was launched, most of the cast was changed, with the notable exceptions of Rooney and Sara Haden as his Aunt Milly. The series entries starred Lewis Stone as Judge Hardy, Fay Holden as Mrs. Hardy, Cecilia Parker as Andy's older sister Marian Hardy, and Ann Rutherford as Polly. Most of the movies were set in the Hardys' fictional hometown of Carvel, located in Idaho in the original play but described in the films as being in the Midwest. All of the films were sentimental comedies celebrating ordinary American life. The people in Carvel, by and large, were pious, patriotic, generous and tolerant. The town represented movie mogul Louis B. Mayer's idealized vision of his adopted country. Some writers have compared Carvel to Mayberry, the setting of The Andy Griffith Show a generation later.
