Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has said it's too early to determine whether Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's new education agency is legal or not.On Aug. 8, the State Department of Education requested an attorney general legal opinion regarding the constitutionality of Whitmer's executive order creating the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential. Nessel responded in a letter, saying: “At this point, the EO is not yet effective and therefore has not been implemented by MiLEAP. And the Board acknowledges that, at this point, there is only the potential for overlap in the future, and no specific set of facts was provided for review.” --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/michigan-in-focus/support

Their work has been published in various prominent education and science journals, including Harvard Educational Review, the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education, and the Journal of Women & Gender in Higher Education. While transgender and nonbinary individuals are becoming more visible across different media forms, undergraduate trans and nonbinary students are still largely an invisible minority on most college and university campuses across the United States. Adverse experiences are common for trans and nonbinary undergraduate students across campuses, and they often receive little to no support from services on campus.Learn more about CITI Program: https://about.citiprogram.org/ Resources: https://sahe.colostate.edu/transgender-students-experiences-in-postsecondary/#:~:text=Transgender%2C%20gender%20nonconforming%2C%20and%20gender,services%20of%20student%20affairs%20professionals.https://legacy.lambdalegal.org/know-your-rights/article/trans-in-college-faq

I interviewed Mary J. Held. Mary's life was almost totally shut down due to seizures. She didn't know she had complex PTSD, mainly from sexual assaults. She was misdiagnosed with stress, epilepsy, and finally conversion disorder. The talk therapy for conversion disorder helped her some, and she went from five years of being unable to work to working nine hours a week, with a few additional forays out into the world After five years of the half-life and 10 total years with seizures, she knew she wanted more. Someone suggested she try a therapy called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).  After 16 EMDR sessions, she processed numerous traumas and regained her joy in living. Her book, Unfreezing Trauma: My Personal Journal of EMDR Recovery tells the story of her journey out of the darkness Mary was born and raised in southern Ohio in a very Catholic family. She went to Michigan State University and upon graduation, went into social work. Although those were happy, productive years, alcohol was beginning to cause problems in her life. After a few years in social work, she developed into an alcoholic and that addiction became her life.  When she finally got sober, she went back to MSU for a degree in physics but changed her major to mathematics. She found her passion in teaching remedial mathematics. For years her life went well, but both her childhood and adult traumas were still there. There came a day when, as she later described, ” a wall in my mind started to crack”. She began having seizures, which gradually became worse until she basically stayed at home most of the time. Then came the recommendation that she try EMDR. She read about it, and found a great therapist—and after four months of therapy, she regained her life. Part of her therapy was keeping a journal. When she finished the therapy, she wanted to use her journal to tell the world about EMDR and ensure that others consumed with trauma would know there was a way out. Her therapist agreed and contributed her comments to the sessions. But Mary was overwhelmed by the thought of publishing her private thoughts and the whole mechanics of getting published. She went on in her life, teaching math, staying sober, and enjoying friends and family, but the book was still in the back of her mind. Then fifteen years later, she witnessed the heroic testimony of Christine Blasey Ford and the #MeToo movement. Inspired by the bravery of women going public with their stories, she finally pushed herself to finish her book. She is publishing it to give hope to all the people who suffer from PTSD as well as their family members, friends, and therapists. After finishing the therapy sessions presented in her book, Mary earned her Master's degree at Michigan State University in Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education received a post-graduate certification as a Developmental Educator and developed a nationally recognized program to help students upgrade their math skills for college. The Carnegie Classifications are an enduring institution in higher education – but they're about to undergo a facelift that could be dramatic. This week's episode of The Key explores the recent news that the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching -- which created the main system we use to differentiate among types of colleges and universities about 50 years ago – had chosen the American Council on Education, the largest and most diverse association of college presidents, to remake and run the classifications going forward. Tim Knowles of Carnegie and Ted Mitchell of ACE discuss the new partnership and why the time is right to refresh the classifications. They emphasize their plan to add a significant focus on whether and how much colleges and universities contribute to social mobility and racial equity, potentially by adding an entirely new classification that would sort institutions by the degree to which they are engines of mobility and equity. The episode includes a conversation with Brendan Cantwell, an associate professor and coordinator of the Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education program at Michigan State University, who discusses the potential unintended consequences of focusing too much on social mobility in college rankings. On this week's SciFiles, your hosts Chelsie and Daniel interview Paul Bylsma from MSU's Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education. This thought project discusses the simultaneous proximity and distance that most of us in the academic world felt as a result of COVID online learning. Paul and his collaborators use a unique theoretical lens that foregrounds the role of the body in learning to describe how being visually present online is not enough to replicate the physical presence that we took for granted in in-person learning. For example, our squares in a Zoom room were super close, and we (typically) had no problem seeing and hearing each other. But Paul's research explains how such visual proximity is betrayed by irreconcilable distances masked by technology. Today we look at counter narratives to Teach for All, the global network of affiliate organizations that recruit people to make 2-year commitments teaching in high-need schools. An outgrowth of Teach for America and Teach First in the United Kingdom, Teach for All advances a one-size fits all solution to educational problems in over 53 countries. It is funded by powerful corporations and organizations, such as the Clinton Global Initiative, and has become an important actor in the global education reform movement. But what do former recruits think of Teach for All? How does Teach for All’s carefully crafted message of reform translate into practice? My guests today are Jameson Brewer, Kathleen deMarrais and Kelly L. McFaden who have recently co-edited a volume called Teach for All Counter Narratives. The book is a collection of first-hand accounts where former recruits offer powerful critiques of the organization and its methods. T. Jameson Brewer is an Assistant Professor of Social Foundations of Education at the University of North Georgia where Kelly L. McFaden is a professor. In this episode, I speak with Dr. Trena Paulus of Eastern Tennessee State University and Dr. Alyssa Wise of New York University on their new book, Looking for Insight, Transformation, and Learning in Online Talk (Routledge, 2019). The book offers a comprehensive discussion of conducting research on online talk, which includes but is not limited to synchronous and asynchronous interactions on social media, discussion forums, and other forms of digital communication platforms. It walks readers through the different stages and procedures of conducting online research, addresses the major challenges that researchers often encounter in doing this type of work, and presents a new research framework for conceiving online research. The book has a strong emphasis on supporting researchers to unpack their implicit assumptions and make informed decisions. It also pays close attention to the unique ethical challenges in doing research online. In an era of physical distancing, many social and educational research activities have been moved from face-to-face to online settings. The book will provide researchers with timely, much-needed, and rich food for thought as they make this unexpected transition. Novice and experienced researchers from multiple disciplines, such as education, communication, media studies, health sciences, political sciences and business, will all benefit from the methodological insights that Paulus and Wise shared in this book. Trena M. Paulus is Professor of Qualitative Research Methods in the Department of Lifelong Education, Administration and Policy at the University of Georgia, USA. Alyssa Friend Wise is Associate Professor of Learning Sciences and Educational Technology in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development and Director of the Learning Analytics Research Network at New York University, USA. I was asked to provide my thoughts on the future of higher education for Coursedog’s Community 2020: A Virtual Summit for Higher Ed event. Looking 20-30 years into the future, I talk about higher education re-branding itself as Lifelong Education, how the funding model will change, increased access and representations, the ways students will engage in modular learning, the ways technology will change the classroom and the administration of lifelong education, and of course the record keeping requirements for all of these changes. Key Takeaways: All of this is speculation and a fun thought exercise. These predictions are based on current trends, but the future is uncertain and ever changing. That’s why this is fun! I could be totally off base, but we’ll have to wait 30 years to find out.Lifelong Education is a much better branding for our industry for the kind of learners we will serve in the future. The funding model for lifelong education must change in order for the industry to remain viable and relevant. The academic calendar as we know it will be replaced by modular learning, on individually determined timelines.Today’s disruptive technologies (Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence) will be pervasive in the future. Technology will enable highly immersive hands on experiences that increase learners’ breadth and depth of the subject matter. Today on Extraordinary Women Radio, I’m really honored to host another Colorado Women's Hall of Fame Inductee – Elinor Miller Greenberg. Elinor is an educational innovator, theorist, and writer who impacts education, civil rights, and women’s rights locally, nationally, and internationally. A visionary, Elinor believes that education is the key to social change and social justice. At 85 years young, Elinor shares lessons she’s learned over her change-impacting life. She shares the story of how she became an activist as a momma with a baby on her hip, and how she lived by the mantra, “Go where no one else will go. Do what no one else will do.” She loves being her current age and offers third-life wisdom. She’s got grit, she’s got grace, and she’s certainly made an impact on our world. I especially enjoy our conversation about how she has built friendships across political lines, with people she has been friends with for over 50 years. An important lesson for all of us in today’s modern age. Elinor has an impressive list of accomplishment in her lifetime. Here are some of the highlights! As a national leader in adult education and adult development, Elinor has worked with the major colleges and universities in Colorado and was also a guest faculty member of the Harvard University School of Education Institute for the Management of Lifelong Education. She has authored, co-authored, and edited nine books and more than 200 papers. Greenberg was one of the first to create learner-centered educational programs in Colorado, heading University Without Walls, an individualized bachelor’s degree program for adults utilizing resources from the community. She served as the national coordinator for the program and later was the regional coordinator for the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning and founding director of Project Leadership. She created the first BSN weekend college for rural nurses in Colorado, established a bachelor’s degree program in Colorado prisons, developed degree programs for Native American mental health workers, and founded a prepaid tuition program for US WEST employees in 14 states. At the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, she established the Mountain and Plains Partnership to provide access to online master’s degree programs for nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, and physician assistants in underserved areas of Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, and Arizona. Greenberg came to Colorado in 1954 to work as a speech therapist and quickly became a community activist, finding ways to provide access to opportunity for women and minorities. She has been in the forefront of the fair housing effort for more than 40 years and served on numerous commissions and boards, including the Colorado Women’s Economic Development Council, the Colorado Women’s Leadership Coalition, Women’s Forum, State Board for Community Colleges and Occupational Education, the Anti-Defamation League, the Colorado Board of Continuing Legal and Judicial Education, the Colorado Judicial Institute, and MESA. As a nationally known public speaker, writer, and consultant, she founded Colorado-based EMG and Associates, a consulting and publishing firm specializing in adult education and distance learning. You will love this interview with Elinor’s deep wisdom. Let’s meet Elinor Miller Greenberg! *** The Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame mission is to inspire by celebrating and sharing the enduring contributions of Colorado’s distinctive women. To achieve this, the Hall educates the people of Colorado about the stories of the women who shaped our state and the nation’s history with courage, leadership, intelligence, compassion, and creativity. Thanks for your listening! Please feel free to leave your comments and/or opinions to andiemarcle@gmail.com Synopsis of Today's Topic: Lifelong learning, as Wikipedia explains, is the "ongoing, voluntary, and self-motivated" pursuit of knowledge for either personal or professional reasons… It not only enhances social inclusion, active citizenship, and personal development, but also self-sustainability, rather than competitiveness and employability. Therefore, the lifelong education is to perform lifelong learning. Now, what is lifelong education for? According to ecosystem, species is affecting environments as environments affects species. Therefore, they adjust to each other as they affect each other. However, as an individual, it’s hard to affect environments as environments change it. Therefore, the lifelong education is adjustment to the environments, and such a process may extend to one’s life. However, the best way to adjust to the conditions is not to follow the rules but to create your own road.
