Is Systemic Change in Education Possible? A Conversation with Alex Beard

There are very different ways of 'doing' education all around the world and my guest this week has spent many years exploring and deeply understanding many of them. As Alex Beard highlights in this conversation really powerfully, "does the purpose match the how or the process?" And how does this align with the values of the communities involved? When there is so much ideological warfare and polarisation around, we need more wise voices like Alex who are deeply expert and evidence-based but also oriented strongly around values and purpose. After starting out as a teacher in a London comprehensive, Alex did his MA at the IOE before joining Teach For All, a growing network of independent organizations working in sixty countries to ensure that every child has access to an excellent education. while building collective leadership and driving systemic changes from within and outside of the education sector. He is the Senior Director at Teach for All (https://teachforall.org/) and leads the Global Learning Lab supporting a global network of leaders working to drive systemic change in the fields of social innovation, school leadership, teacher training and policy-making. He has written extensively about his experiences in search of the practices that will shape the future of learning in publications such as the Guardian, Financial Times and Wired. He is the author of Natural Born Learners: Our incredible capacity to learn and how we can harness it, published in 2018 and he wrote and presented The Learning Revolution, a three part series on the future of education for BBC Radio 4 (2020). I've also had the privilege of chatting to Wendy Kopp, Alex's colleague and founderand CEO of Teach for All in episode 79 so do also check that one out!Alex's website: https://www.alexbeard.org/The Learning Revolution documentary: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000h93c/episodes/playerThe Missing Piece report: https://teachforall.org/MissingPieceBriefSocial LinksLinkedIn: @alex-beard - https://www.linkedin.com/in/alex-beard-08901915/

Are you a good listener?   For this Women of Color Rise episode, I talk with Radha Ruparell who heads the Global Leadership Accelerator at Teach For All and is the author of Brave Now. Radha and I discuss how leaders often focus on communication but don't give attention to the art of listening. In these times of polarization, listening is especially important because it can help us build relationships and understand other points of view, so that we can move forward together.   We discuss three steps to help us be better listeners: Develop self-awareness of our filters. We may think that we are listening with an open-mind when in reality we are listening with established filters. These filters are often formed when we are young, for example the filters of not feeling like we are smart/good enough. These filters keep us being judgmental instead of truly being open. Put our filters aside. Having self-awareness of our filters allows us then to deliberately put our filters aside so we can be open to the other person. We are no longer planning our response about why they are wrong and why we are right. We are present. Set an intention to be a listening. Once we are able to release ourselves and our judgments, we are more able to be fully present for the other person. We set an intention to be a listening (a noun) for the other person, a vessel open to their perspectives, feelings, hopes, and dreams.    It's such a rare gift to listen to others without any hidden agendas. When was the last time you were listened to with genuine curiosity and openness without judgment? Imagine what is possible when you can truly listen to others.   Get full show notes and more information here: https://analizawolf.com/ep-74-the-art-of-listening-with-radha-ruparell-head-of-the-global-leadership-accelerator

Register for the WISE 11 Summit - Doha, Qatar (28-29 Nov 2023): https://www.wise-qatar.org/wise-11/ As a result of the worst shock to education and learning in history, “learning poverty”—the percentage of 10-year-olds unable to read and understand a simple written text—has increased to 70%, according to the World Bank. And on top of that, we have constantly been hearing the word ‘reform' quite a lot especially since the pandemic. A growing consensus that emphasizes the need for educaiton systems to not only prioritize academic skills, but teach students how to navigate uncertainty and change. In a world where educational landscapes are increasingly complex and challenging, a pivotal question arises: Is collective leadership the key to building a path towards systemic change in education? Does there need to be a more unified effort to achieve these changes, and how do we go about that? To answer these questions, we are honored to have Wendy Kopp, Founder & CEO of Teach For All and 2021 WISE Prize for Education Laureate, as our guest. Wendy's vision of leadership aligns seamlessly with these emerging trends. In this episode, Host of this episode Aurelio Amaral talks to Wendy on redefining education leadership in the face of current challenges and opportunities. On the fifth episode of the On the Balcony podcast, Michael welcomes Radha Ruparell, author and Head of Global Leadership Accelerator at  Teach For All, into the conversation to talk about the main ideas in Chapter 5 of Ron Heifetz legendary book, Leadership Without Easy Answers (1998), namely informal and formal authority, holding environments, and nurturing our inner capacity.  When talking about what it means to practice leadership, we often think about what we can do for others, how we can increase learning and stimulate growth, but more often than not we forget about what we need to do for ourselves As the Head of Global Leadership Accelerator at Teach for All, an organization that develops collective leadership to change the future of education, Ruparell has found herself in scenarios, both with informal and formal authority, where she's needed to take a breath for the sake of herself and her team.  Too often does leadership's glitz and glam overshadow the pressure, stress, and discipline that come with the role.  That's why it's all the more important to grow your inner capacity, ground yourself, and find solace in the hearts of those around you.  Being in charge and practicing leadership is tough work that requires a lot of self discipline and poise.  So if you listen to today's episode, our two seasoned experts can help you learn how to achieve just that.    The Finer Details of This Episode:  Informal and formal authority The holding environment Teach for All Growing Our Inner Capacities Self-discipline and poise  The innate power in young people Quotes: “When you have authority, whether it's formal or informal, you have this opportunity to shape the container– to shape the space.”  “We only move at the speed of trust.” “How do we bring people across the globe to develop these leadership capacities together?” “So our belief is creating a world where students can shape a better world for themselves and for all of us. And more and more, we're seeing the power of activating the leadership of students.” “We talk a lot about these holding environments.  We talk about the ability of those who are exercising leadership to hold under a lot of conflict, to hold a lot of tension, to hold different views. And yet, I don't think we talk enough about the inner work that we need to do ourselves, that inner discipline, that poise, that groundedness that's required, in order to be able to hold that.” “Part of the know-how Parsons required was a discipline, poise.  She had to have the emotional capacity to tolerate uncertainty, frustration, and pain. She had to be able to raise questions about preparing for the possibility of death without getting too anxious herself.” “So I encourage those who are in formal authority positions find a support network. There's no shame in getting support. In fact, it's the opposite. Again, if we want to be able to hold space for others We have to be held ourselves.” Links:  https://konu.org/blog-en/2022/6/7/on-the-balcony-a-place-for-perspective-and-konus-new-podcast (On The Balcony Podcast) https://www.amazon.com/Leadership-Without-Answers-Ronald-Heifetz/dp/0674518586 (Leadership Without Easy Answers)  https://bravenowbook.com/ (Brave Now ) https://www.instagram.com/radharuparell/?hl=en (Radha Ruparell on Instagram) https://twitter.com/radharuparell (Radha Ruparell on Twitter)    https://www.linkedin.com/in/radharuparell/ (Radha Ruparell on LinkedIn) https://teachforall.org/ (Teach for All) Mentioned in this episode: KONU Workshop Ad https://on-the-balcony.captivate.fm/shorturl-at-lqtw9 (KONU Workshop Ad)

Few things have been done differently inside the classroom. The gap between what is possible, and what was currently true in the classroom is at the heart of our education crisis.(03:03) – The pandemic has widened the educational divide. The pandemic has exacerbated the crisis and intensified some of these questions about the future of education.(06:30) – Education must consider access and quality. But with schools shut down, access becomes an infrastructure through the internet and that's a relatively technical solution.(07:38) – If you're not going to school, quality of education is knowledge received sitting in your bedroom via your laptop, which has completely disrupted our idea of what a quality education is.(08:19) – The vast majority of primary and middle school kids are just not equipped with self motivation yet, so quality has to mean something about human to human engagement. Learning, for most people, is better when it's social.(13:40) – Practitioners have had to develop new pedagogies, new ways of learning, how to engage kids through the medium of technology. You need to know how to engage a student.(15:16) – We might be strengthening bonds between teachers and parents, as a result of the pandemic to support early learning, virtually, and that involves engaging parents more actively in supporting their kids to learn.(18:48) – Our intelligence is unlimited, and it's teachers in schools that cultivate that potential. We need to be more explicit about the different roles that teachers play, and set up our system to enable teachers as subject specialists who help kids to do better. (21:12) – Teachers need to be experts in tech, at least to understand how they can use the latest tools to outsource bits of their practice to save themselves time. (30:22) – AI is sort of an adversary to help us enhance our own creativity. The dangers are more connected to the intentions. It all comes down to human choices if you deploy technology and in certain ways undermine the ability of humans to get better at things. Lots of people are designing to enhance the humans in the loop, which is how we should be thinking about it.(36:33) – There are great advances to be made in the deployment of technology in education, but the advances will be made not by trying to improve tech, but by trying to improve what the humans who are doing with tech. Investment in people and not an investment in technology. Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Zainspirowana misją Teach For All Kasia chciała dołączyć do Teach For Poland i działać w kraju, jednak okazało się, że Teach For Poland nie istniało. Polecenia Kasi do Kanonu Lektur Pracowni Dziewczyn:  Muzyka: Sanah Książki :"City of Girls" - Elisabeth Gilbert, "Kochaj wystarczająco dobrze" - Agnieszka Jucewicz, "Matka Polka" Anne Appelbaum, Piotr Potoroczyn * Strona Teach For Poland: https://teachforpoland.org/  Teach For Poland na Instagramie: @teachforpl Kasia na Instagramie: @nabrda Instagram Pracowni Dziewczyn @pracowniadziewczynpod Kontakt: pracowniadziewczynpodcast@gmail.com

We'll also discuss the progress towards equality that has been made over the past few decades, while examining the persistent challenges faced by girls and how those are increasing due to COVID. The Malala Fund was founded in 2013 by Pakistani girls' education advocates Malala and Ziauddin Yousafzai to ensure that all girls receive 12 years of “free, safe, quality education.” The Fund prioritizes three action areas: investing in local education activists, advocating to hold leaders accountable, and amplifying girls' voices. Teach For All is a global network of 59 independent, locally led and governed partner organizations and a global organization that works to accelerate the progress of the network. Each network partner recruits and develops promising future leaders to teach in their nations' under-resourced schools and communities and, with this foundation, to work with others, inside and outside of education, to ensure all children are able to fulfill their potential. Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Twitter/IG: @RyanHawk12 Wendy Kopp is CEO and Co-founder of Teach For All, a global network of independent organizations that are developing collective leadership to ensure all children have the opportunity to fulfill their potential. Today, more than 6,000 Teach For America corps members—outstanding recent college graduates and professionals of all academic disciplines—are in the midst of two-year teaching commitments in over 50 urban and rural regions. Notes: Jim Collins called Wendy “my entrepreneur for this decade.” He continued, “Her organization is truly an entrepreneurial creation that is out to utterly transform education. It’s taking an entrepreneurial, let’s-do-something approach to tackling a massive social problem.” Goal setting: It’s all about setting a goal that’s at the right intersection of ambitious and feasible. The #1 responsibility of a leader is to catalyze a clear and shared vision for the company and secure commitment to and vigorous pursuit of that vision. The differentiator is the “first WHO” principle. It’s what she’s learned. What is it that drives system change in education? “Jim thinks it’s the answer in corporate America, I think it is the difference in social change.” Wendy grew up in a bubble in Texas. She didn't realize the inequity and disadvantages to children born in different situations. At the end of her college years at Princeton, she wrote a 100+ page thesis. She narrowed down to 30 pages... And created a four page plan. She mailed her thesis to 30 executives in an effort to spread awareness and raise money  Everywhere she went, people said, "This is a great idea but college kids won't do this." Wendy was steadfast in her belief that they would... After the first year, Wendy found herself on stage speaking to 500 "Teach For America" teachers... The benefit of naivete: "The world needs you before you become jaded by your experience."  "We need leaders to channel their energy in marginalized communities." What was the key to the first year growth? "It helped writing a plan. I sent 100 letters to potential donors and got rejected or ignored by 98 of them." You have to persevere and have conviction for the idea. Leadership - An idea that magnetizes people. People were drawn to Wendy's mission and purpose. Strategic Framework - What is your core purpose? The core values are what brings people together. Create a sense of mission - "You need to enable a diverse group of people. Articulate it and make it possible for others to engage." Recruit people from a wide variety of backgrounds. Diversity is very important. Why did Wendy do this instead of take a job that would pay well? "I knew myself well. I knew that whatever I did, I would throw myself at it 24/7. I wanted to have a bigger impact on the world." "What keeps me at it? I started gaining the sense of responsibility for so many others." How Teach For America helped Washington D.C. "I met with so many civic leaders who said, 'We've tried everything and it won't work.' DC was 2 years behind Harlem from an educational perspective with their public schools." Washington DC was completely transformed by Teach For America and now has one of the better public school districts in America. How is she so humble? "I realize we're going to get so much wrong." Must learn from what goes wrong and improve moving forward What are some "must-have" leadership qualities? Look at what people have accomplished How have you managed through challenges? People who are passionate about the purpose People who live into the values Optimism Commitment to diversity and inclusiveness What's currently exciting? Seeing the leadership effects in others from Pakistan to Peru The power of locally rooted leadership Commonalities of leader who sustain excellence: Put impact first... Ahead of career ambitions Solve problems Perseverance Optimism Humility - Constantly learning Act on conviction What does Wendy do for fun? Runs and listens to books while running. Which books? Human Kind by Rutger Bregman Reinventing Organizations by Frederic Laloux Life advice: "Solve as early as possible." "Do not put off your passion until after you've had a job for a few years." "Don't think you have to start something new." Look for others who are doing it and join them...

Text LEARNERS to 44222 for more details... Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Jim Collins books include Good to Great, the #1 bestseller, which examines why some companies make the leap and others don’t; the enduring classic Built to Last, which discovers why some companies remain visionary for generations; How the Mighty Fall, which delves into how once-great companies can self-destruct; and Great by Choice, which uncovers the leadership behaviors for thriving in chaos and uncertainty. Jim has also published two monographs that extend the ideas in his primary books: Good to Great and the Social Sectors and Turning the Flywheel. His most recent publication is BE 2.0 (Beyond Entrepreneurship 2.0), an ambitious upgrade of his very first book; it returns Jim to his original focus on small, entrepreneurial companies and honors his coauthor and mentor Bill Lazier. Notes: What Exactly is Leadership?” “True leadership only exists if people follow when they would otherwise have the freedom to not follow.” Many business leaders think they are leading when in fact they’re simply exercising power, and they might discover to their horror that no one would follow them if they had no power. General Colin Powell said, “In my 35 years of service, I don’t ever recall telling anyone, ‘That’s an order.” “Leadership is the art of getting people to want to do what must be done.” When Steve Jobs returned to Apple, one of the first people he called was Jim Collins. Jim asked Steve,“what did you first build upon to emerge from the darkness? What gave you hope?” Steve was talking with perhaps the greatest product visionary of our time.. so he expected him to talk about operating systems or the Macintosh computer or other product ideas.  But he didn’t. What did he talk about? People. "It was all about the WHO." History is the “study of surprises.” There will be no “new normal,” there will only be a continuous series of “not normal” episodes, defying predictions and unforeseen by most of us until they happen. This is why we double down on the “first who” principle. Track the number 1 metric: some say sales or profitability or cash flow or something about products. But there’s one metric that towers above them all that’s rarely spoken about in meetings. And that is: The percentage of key seats on the bus filled with the right people  for those seats. How to know when to shift from “develop” to “replace?” Jim has distilled years of reflection down to 7 questions that he offers to stimulate your thinking when you face the “develop or replace” conundrum.  Are you beginning to lose other people by keeping this person in the seat? Do you have a values problem, a will problem, or a skills problem? What’s the person's relationship to the window and the mirror? Does the person see the work as a job or a responsibility? Has your confidence in the person gone up or down in the last year? Do you have a bus problem or a seat problem? How would you feel if the person quit? Jim spent time at West Point as the Chair for the Study of Leadership… One of they key things he learned from that time was the importance of focusing on your unit and taking care of your people, not your career… “The key to a leader’s impact is sincerity. Before he can inspire with emotion he must be swayed by it himself. Before he can move their tears his own must flow. To convince them he must himself believe.” - Winston Churchill Kroger made the leap because they became fanatical about getting the right people in the right seats A key position at your company does the following: Has hiring responsibility A failure by them could expose the company to disaster Their performance has an outsized impact on the business as a whole The Personal Hedgehog Concept You love to do the work You're doing something you're wired for The market will pay you for it Great success in life is when you have people in key seats that fit their hedgehog When analyzing if a person should remain on the team, ask, "What is the person's relationship with the window or the mirror?" We want people who have a tremendous capacity to grow. Be a growth machine. An example of a world-class leader? Wendy Kopp, CEO and Co-Founder of Teach For All, a global network of independent nonprofit organizations working to expand educational opportunity in their own countries and the Founder of Teach For America. "Wendy had no power and not much charisma, and yet she got hundreds of thousands of people to sign up and do work that is not fun." That's leadership. "Leadership is the art of getting people to want to do what must be done." The #1 responsibility of a leader is to catalyze a clear and shared vision for the company and secure commitment to and vigorous pursuit of that vision. From Jim, "I'm more of a teacher than a leader. What's my leadership artistry? Trust." Ann Mulcahy saved Xerox. She kept getting promoted... When asked how she earned those promotions, Anne said, "I tried to make my mini-bus a sparkling pocket of greatness." They came to her and said, "We want you to drive the whole bus."

Today, Tom is speaking with Amy Klement, Managing Partner of Imaginable Futures, a global philanthropic investment firm that believes learning has the power to unlock human potential and aspires to provide every learner with the opportunity and the tools they need to imagine, and to realize, a brighter future. Amy formerly worked for eBay where she served as vice president of relationship marketing and as vice president of product strategy and operations. Joining as one of its earliest employees, Amy also worked for PayPal as vice president of product. She then went on to help lead Omidyar Network’s work in Education, Financial Inclusion, Property Rights, and Consumer Internet & Mobile initiatives in key geographies. Join in on the conversation to hear all about the incredible work Imaginable Futures is doing, the grantees and investments they’re making, and Amy’s overall philosophy on educational philanthropy. Amy also speaks about the recent report she collaborated on with IDEO titled, “Learning Reimagined: Radical Thinking for Equitable Futures,” and touches on the themes of equity, impact investing, and the importance of values. Key Takeaways: [:10] About today’s episode with Amy Klement. [:40] Tom welcomes Amy Klement to the podcast. [1:06] Amy speaks a bit about her time as an early employee at PayPal. [1:24] Amy shares some highlights and key takeaways from her seven years with PayPal and interacting with some of Silicon Valley’s biggest personalities. [5:47] About Amy’s shift from PayPal to eBay and her experience in the VP role. [6:36] About Pierre Omidyar and why Amy decided to help him launch the Omidyar Network. [8:44] Amy and Tom highlight a few of Imaginable Futures’ grantees, starting with Wonderschool. [10:30] What Amy appreciates and loves about Bridge International. [12:56] What Amy appreciates about the innovative African network, SPARK Schools. [14:20] About the incredible global network, Teach For All, and what Amy loves about it. [16:40] About Imaginable Futures; their structure, the work that they do, and more. [18:43] Is Imaginable Futures an impact organization, first and foremost? [18:54] Amy elaborates on how Imaginable Future’s flexibility allows them to structure investments in a way that promotes both scaled impact and sustainability in the most efficient way possible. [20:28] Imaginable Futures has a wonderful but challengingly broad agenda; investing from early learning through post-secondary in America, Africa, and Latin America. What does Amy think about collecting the best ideas and narrowing those down to investment choices? [22:55] Imaginable Futures’ beautiful set of values: where they came from, how they uphold them, and what they are. [24:15] Are Imaginable Futures’ investment 50/50 between return-seeking and philanthropic? And is it by design or did it just work out that way? [24:55] The importance of taking on risk when it comes to philanthropy. [30:10] About Amy’s new report, “Learning Reimagined: Radical Thinking for Equitable Futures”. [31:52] Two key provocations from Amy’s report: 1. What if student agency became the most important measure of learning? And, 2. What if young people connected in new ways, developed voices, organized for change across politics, climate, systemic inequities, and even their own learning? [34:25] Amy and Tom discuss other provocations in the “Learning Reimagined” report: “What if learning progressions were based on competencies?” And: “What if home-schooling became the new school if we learned more about different school formats?” Amy also shares her thoughts on whether she thinks we’ll see home-schooling innovations take off as a result of the pandemic. [35:25] The importance of addressing inequities quickly (and now more than ever). [36:29] Amy’s closing thoughts on what’s next for Imaginable Futures. The importance of local leadership from educators as well as innovation around learning with a focus on equity is paramount. In this episode, we talk to two education leaders about their experience and ideas on how best to manage and ensure at-scale education response and recovery interventions.

As schools closed across the globe due to the COVID-19 pandemic, education systems were forced to come face to face with the limitations of traditional schooling. In all sectors, technology picked up the slack when physical work environments became unfeasible, and education was no exception – technologies that were previously relegated to the fringes of pedagogical practice suddenly became the only way teaching and learning could take place. Coronavirus has rapidly accelerated society’s increasing reliance on technology, and any sector entrenched too deeply in the old industrial work organisation risks getting left behind. Is education one of them? Has the crisis exposed ways in which education simply isn’t up to date with the modern world? To discuss this, we caught up via teleconference with Wendy Kopp, CEO and Co-Founder of Teach For All, Roberto Benes, Director of Generation Unlimited, and Andreas Schleicher, Director of the OECD Directorate for Education and Skills.
