“And my brother saw an opportunity with the Pioneertown Motel, which was just behind Pappy and Harriet's. It was not in the best shape, but it was next to this amazing event venue, and situated in this incredibly rich historical context that hadn't been fully exposed or told or explored, at least in the past from our perspective.” We're in great company with Mike French, Co-Founder and Partner at Life & Times - a creative design and development company passionate about detail-rich, contextually responsive, culturally driven and responsible placemaking - as realized through their restoration projects in Pioneertown Motel in California and Captain Whidbey in Washington, with a few other community projects on their culture map.  Pioneertown Motel, originally made famous as a backdrop for the world's best Westerns, today offers a step back in time lodging experience at the nexus of deep nature and quality entertainment. Captain Whidbey is the gateway to beautiful and rugged wilderness, fostering a sense of romance, a longing for adventure and a communion with the natural world.  In this episode, Mike shares how his creative career and open mindset led him to join together with family and friends to create Life & Times, preserving history, ingrained in community, and driven by culture. Top Takeaways [3:00] It was a family affair from the beginning for Mike and his brother Matt - and with a little persistence provided by their mom, they found themselves in a new world of hospitality.  [6:30] How the narrative changed and created what would become Life & Times - certainly not a traditional company by the books, but one that is ingrained in every aspect of the community.  [8:25] The history of Pioneertown - built in 1946 by the likes of Hollywood actors, Roy Rogers and Gene Autry, as a working movie set to film all of the iconic Western films - transpired into a community of creatives living and working in the film industry.  [12:00] The common thread woven throughout Life & Times is an “exercise in looking into the past, finding these special moments in history, trying to evoke the best of those moments and those feelings and those eras for each venue.” [14:20] Life & Times and other locals alike are breathing new life into the High Desert with cherished culinary classics, a reimagined release of the original Pioneertown Gazette, and the historic Post Office acting as a curated shop of local makers, artisans and brands.  [24:10] Why Captain Whidbey on Whidbey Island, just outside of Seattle, Washington, is “the gateway to beautiful and rugged wild, fostering a sense of romance, a longing for adventure and a communion with the natural world.”  [25:35] Expect to Dine In Good Company with freshly caught mussels right from within view of The Restaurant while you sip on local Washington wine.  [27:50] How a Japanese Onsen experience, seeing the reverence for bathing culture there, inspired Mike to bring more holistic wellness experiences to the future of Captain Whidbey, beginning with the conception of a spa.   Notable Mentions Pappy & Harriet's Joshua Tree National Park Red Dog Saloon The Copper Room La Copine Coupville, WA Ebey's Reserve Deception Pass The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway  Visit For Yourself Life & Times Website | @lifeandtimes.co Pioneertown Motel Website | @pioneertownmotel Captain Whidbey Website | @thecaptainwhidbey Stay In Good Company Website

Expect A Miracle with Richard Roberts

Evangelist Mike French shares a powerful story of the night God spoke specifically to him and gave him an ultimatum regarding his obedience. As you listen to Mike's testimony, it may remind you of times in your life when you felt God speaking to you and the subsequent choices you were compelled to make. If you don't recall a time where you heard God's voice, you can seek Him today. Jeremiah 33:3 says, “Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.” Be encouraged in your own walk with God as you diligently seek Him and listen for His leading by the Holy Spirit or through His Holy Word. Today's guest is Mike French.  I've know Mike for a number of years and I think under his layers of being a former educational executive, a craftsman, and pretty good musician he's got a bit of philosopher hidden.  Mike has jumped off the hamster wheel and has become so much more than a maker.  From intentionally seeking simplicity to calling out the busyness in our lives, Mike shares his own struggles and triumphs and continued pursuit of writing his own story.   This isn't touchy feely couch talk but rather Mike gives examples from his own life on how he continually strives to be intentional on the choices he's making in his story. Here's a link to Mike's YouTube Channel: Artsy Reclaimed Schoolie Build His website: Artsy Reclaimed   Go to soulcrafttribe.com to comment.  I'd love your feedback on hearing more of this, the interviews, etc.  Also if you drop your email (I know who needs another damn email in their inbox) I'll promise to only send them when I think they're useful or we have an announcement.  If you don't find the emails useful then by all means cancel...it's your story, not mine.

Marc Handler was the Head Writer for Voltron: The Third Dimension, the first US-produced 3D animated series. Marc Handler is currently living and working in Shanghai, China, and was the WEP representative that worked with Toei Animation in Japan when WEP commissioned Toei to produce the 20 original episodes of Lion Force Voltron back in 1985. Just to show how much Marc loves the fans, he recorded these two episodes with us between 12:30 AM and 2:45 AM in Shanghai. His enthusiasm is still very strong for Voltron and the fans of the series. Thank you, Marc! Marc gives our hosts a lesson about the original creators of the the Voltron animation from Japan. She has already drawn Allura and Keith on a wrecking mace, based on the idea we gave her from an earlier Podcast episode. So, post your ideas for “Challenge the Chee” by posting on @LetsVoltron on twitter or on our Let's Voltron Facebook Page with the hashtag #ChallengeTheChee and your idea. The rest of the episode belonged to George Sohn, the President of Toynami. George talked about a great many things, but we wanted to highlight some of the major points of the discussion here: George told us about the origin of how WEP and Toynami came together when the 20th Anniversary Voltron Die-Cast was forged. Jeremy, Marc and Mike are some the first people outside of Toynami to hear the sounds that are made when the key is opened on the base of the 30th Anniversary Voltron, and our fantastic listeners are now part of that select group. George tells us that a 24-inch Jumbo Voltron is in the works, unlike any other large scale Voltron you've ever seen. There is some discussion about the scale of a Blazing Sword on a Voltron that big, and Lion heads that shoot off the arms, just like in the TV show. George opens it up to the listeners who are the truest fans. He wants to know what you guys would like to have for a Jumbo Voltron. There may still be enough time to make some changes before it goes into production. So, post on the comments here or go to the Facebook page for Let's Voltron, and let George know what you would like for a 24-inch Voltron. After those suggestions are posted, we will send that data to George. George lets us know that he would really like to make a Vehicle Voltron Masterpiece, at the same scale as the 20th Anniversary Voltron Die-Cast, but he needs support from the fans. Jeremy tells the fans to send your posts to DreamWorks Classics twitter account @DWAnimation. The Toynami 30th Anniversary Die-Cast Voltron Collector's Set will continue to be sold through the 2014 year, but once it's gone, it's gone, and will never be sold again. Mike French is the administrator of the Official Voltron Facebook and Twitter accounts. He also runs the retroblasting.com website, which includes a video channel, where you can see reviews of movies, cartoons, and toys from the 80's. In this episode, Mike talks about his interactions with the Voltron fans, now that he has been the administrator of the Official Voltron Facebook and Twitter accounts, since the new year began. Marc tells the listeners about the email address for the Let's Voltron Podcast, which is: letsvoltronpodcast@gmail.com Feel free to send us an email, and we'll put you on the list for notifications when we post a new episode, and possibly a future newsletter. Marc and Mike spent the rest of the episode talking about the History of Voltron Toys, in chronological order, starting in the early 80's, when the first Beast King GoLion and Dairugger toys were available from Popy in Japan. One of the toys we mentioned was the LJN Giant Voltron Commander Radio Controlled Robot. We talked about a commercial that promoted that toy, and here is a link to that 30-second blast from the past. If you follow the links from that one, you'll see there is a whole page of old Voltron commercials available to view. I'd say commercials have come a long way since then. We didn't mention it in the Podcast, but it has just been announced that the 30th Anniversary Voltron Collector's Set from Toynami will be available on April 30. That news broke here. You can still pre-order that set here.
