About this episode: Hurricane Helene's catastrophic force seemed to catch many by surprise, especially those living in western North Carolina. The focus is now on the response, but it's clear from the devastation that old playbooks for preparedness and readiness must change to consider new risks in a new reality. In this episode: a conversation about what emergency responders are already learning in the aftermath of Helene and why nowhere is really “safe” from climate change. Guest: Dr. Joseph Barbera is the co-director of the George Washington University Institute for Crisis, Disaster, and Risk Management. Join us for a wacky race into the exciting world of... HANNA-BARBERA! WILLIAM HANNA and JOSEPH BARBERA were the innovative team behind many of the world's favorite cartoons. Over their long career, they were responsible for such memorable characters as TOM & JERRY, THE FLINTSTONES, YOGI BEAR, THE JETSONS, SCOOBY DOO, HUCKLEBERRY HOUND, TOP CAT, SECRET SQUIRREL, HONG KONG PHOOEY, THE WACKY RACES, ATOM ANT, SNAGGLEPUSS, JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS, WAIT TILL YOUR FATHER GETS HOME, and HUNDREDS more! This was the team that brought us JONNY QUEST, SPACE GHOST, THE HERCULOIDS, THE FANTASTIC FOUR, SUPER FRIENDS, SHAZZAN, VALLEY OF THE DINOSAURS, and many other fantastical Saturday morning staples. Not satisfied with the status quo, HANNA and BARBERA ventured out into the world of feature films, giving us THE MAN CALLED FLINTSTONE, HEY THERE, IT'S YOGI BEAR!, and the beloved animated classic, CHARLOTTE'S WEB. If that's not enough for you folks, they even tackled live-action with THE BANANA SPLITS ADVENTURE HOUR, DANGER ISLAND, MYSTERY ISLAND, and the under-appreciated live-action/animation hybrid, THE NEW ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN! Of course, we don't have the space to list all of HANNA-BARBERA'S achievements. That's what the episode is for. But, speaking of that! There was only one guest we could have booked for this epic topic. He's a friend of the show, appearing (along with fellow MP friend, CONSTANTINE NASR) on our CHRISTMAS SPECIALS episode, and has an awe-inspiring resume. A deep dive into the U.S. animation studio Hanna-Barbera provides the focus of Footnote #44, as Chris and Alex are once again joined by Dr. Jared Bahir Browsh to discuss the origins of William Hanna and Joseph Barbera's influential and prolific production company that strengthened the cartoon's move from theatrical exhibition to television. Topics include the studio's origins and defining animated products; their particular application of limited animation and the relationship to elements of character and background design; the industrial and aesthetic circumstances that came to support their dominance over children's animated television in North America; and the many challenges of researching Hanna-Barbera as a popular - yet largely under-represented - area of film, media, and animation studies. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**
Chris and Alex are delighted to welcome Dr. Jared Bahir Browsh (Assistant Teaching Professor, University of Colorado Boulder) to the podcast to discuss William Hanna and Joseph Barbera's landmark animated sitcom The Flintstones (1960-1966), the first cartoon series to occupy a prime time slot on U.S. television. Listen as they discuss Dr Browsh's research into the political economics of the media and his recent book Hanna-Barbera: A History (2022) through a consideration of The Flintstones as a highly influential animated product, one whose Stone Age setting, multi-episode narratives, and anarchic energy all helped to define the cartoon and support its identity as a seminal piece of serial television. The conversation is focused on three important episodes within the programme's history - The Flintstone Flyer (S1E1), The Blessed Event (a.k.a. The Dress Rehearsal) (S3E23), and The Great Gazoo (S6E7) - which collectively map the trajectory of Bedrock's famous family while reflecting broader narrative and tonal shifts across its original six season run. Topics include the industrial history of The Flintstones across network television in North America and its status as an early exemplar of adult animation on television; renditions of Stone Age technology and links to mid-century modernism; Wilma, gender politics, and the emergent cultural role of the homemaker on and off the screen; the impact of merchandising and syndication on characterisation; the ‘loose' aesthetic style of the programme and its ‘cacophonic' use of sound; and how The Flintstones shifted the codes and conventions of popular animated television.

This week it's more Tom and Jerry chat as we discuss 'Johann Mouse', the 1953 cartoon from William Hanna and Joseph Barbera.
Su personajes incluyen: Tom and Jerry, Huckleberry Hound, Yogi Bear, The Flinstones, Top Cat, The Jetsons, Johnny Quest, Wacky Races, Scooby Doo y The Smurfs. Sumner is joined on this week's Hard Agree by the creator of the Sumner Family's all-time favorite Cartoon Network show, the always-cheerful and gentlemanly Van Partible! Van created the mighty Johnny Bravo for Hanna-Barbera when he was just 22 years old and, in this deep-dive conversation, he chats with Sumner about: his early years creating the show; working with Craig McCracken, Genndy Tartakovsky & Seth MacFarlane; working with prolific voice performer Jeff Bennett (who created Johnny's unmistakeable Elvis twang); working with the legendary Joseph Barbera; working with the iconic Adam West; being given access to the original Hanna-Barbera Scooby Doo animation for his inspired Johnny team-up Bravo Dooby-Doo and his more recent work on projects like Amazon Prime's Pete the Cat! Isaac and Chris get juvenile with Tom and Jerry (2021). Is this family comedy one of the best blendings of live-action and animated characters to-date? Or would the movie have been better off ditching the human characters entirely? This week, your hosts admire the timeless works of William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, applaud Tim Story's directing career, and agree on the scariest Scooby Doo movie ever made. Love it? Hate it? [to be read in the voice of Nick Wiger] William Hanna and Joseph Barbera met when they were both working at MGM studios in 1930. This was a time when Disney was still building their monopoly on family entertainment, and they were the kings of animation. In 1957, they joined forces to create H-B Enterprises (eventually renamed to Hanna-Barbera Productions), in the hopes of challenging the vast empire that Disney's animated films had created. Jumping off the popularity of the characters Tom & Jerry, originally developed under MGM, they developed a larger cast of characters, including Huckleberry Hound and Yogi Bear. While Disney and various animated shorts throughout the years had been produced for film, William Hanna and Joseph Barbera saw the future in a new medium that was growing in popularity: television. Up to this point cartoons hadn't been produced specifically for TV, but in 1960, with the creation of The Flintstones, they had figured out the right formula to make cartoons appealing to a primetime audience. By spending slightly less on the animation, but making up for it with dynamite vocal performances (such as hiring the legendary Mel Blanc AKA Bugs Bunny) and all in the sitcom family setting, they could make a cartoon that a lot of people wanted to see. The immense popularity of The Flintstones lead to countless more Hanna-Barbera classics that we know and love, including the futuristic counterpart to The Flinstones called The Jetsons. The Jetsons was far less popular, only getting 24 episodes in the original run, as opposed to the 6 seasons that The Flintstones got, but it slowly built a cult following; and by the 80s it was popular again and for the first time in 20 years, they made new episodes with much of the original cast. However, by '89 much of the cast was getting on in years and it was time to give The Jetsons a theatrical farewell. For Jetsons: The Movie they tried to use the formula that had given them success so long ago, using polished but still simple animation including dynamite vocal performances (this time, hiring the pop icon Tiffany to play Judy Jetson and hopefully bring in a younger audience) and including an environmental message in the main story. But this time, the formula didn't quite work. It was difficult to complete, as both Mel Blanc and George O'Hanlon died during production, and ended up getting pretty awful reviews from the critics at the time. But going back and watching it, the movie (and it's killer 80s pop soundtrack) is a strange time capsule, where it represents both nostalgia for the 60s and the 80s at the same time... with Brad and Jon and Griffin and Alex from Woodchickens! ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED 07/02/2020 The nostalgia for this week's movie makes no sense at all. We're celebrating the 30th anniversary of a movie released in 1990, which reeks of 1980's, based on a cartoon from the 60's. Ken Palmer joins us to talk about "Jetsons: The Movie", a film that quite literally killed its star. Directed by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera and featuring the voice talents of George O'Hanlon, Penny Singleton, Patric Zimmerman, Jean Vander Pyl, Don Messick, the legendary Mel Blanc and...Tiffany for some reason?
