Don't worry, I'll explain it all over the next hour plus as the latest podcast is here! On deck: (6:42) I open up the podcast with several apologies for my performance on the most recent episode. (I'll get into it throughout the course of this pod.) There was an NBA MVP battle between SGA & Nikola Jokic. Does Jokic deserve the award, even after losing to SGA yesterday? Who is the front runner at the moment. Also, the comparisons of this race to the NFL with Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson. Is there any concern for LeBron James and the Lakers as he suffered a groin injury late in their loss to the Celtics on Saturday night? He'll be out a week or two for rest and recovery. I'll also talk about the Knicks Jalen Brunson, the signing of PJ Tucker, comments from former owner of the Mavericks Mark Cuban about the Luka Doncic deal, a mention of the MAX docu-series on the Celtics and Stephen A. Smith being confronted by LeBron James about his critique of his son. The final topic being a lightning rod, even for someone like myself, where having a platform like this comes a responsibility to uphold. You won't want to miss those comments, plus all that's happening in the Association. (36:49) Has Auburn jeopardized their top seed in the country after losing to Alabama at home 93-91? Could this be a stretch where they could falter entering into the Tournament? (41:42) The NHL experienced a wild trade deadline on Friday where players were being shipped left and right, most notably, the Bruins fire sale sending Brad Marchand to Florida. And Mikko Rantanen was sent packing again to Dallas for a boatload of picks. I'll break down all of the major trades, including the Islanders Brock Nelson as teams jockey for playoff positioning down the stretch. Alex Ovechkin in now single digits (nine away) from surpassing Wayne Gretzky. Will the pressure consume him? Or will it be business as usual for the Capitals great? I'll peek as to what's going on in the sport with the latest postseason races in each conference. (57:02) There were some record setting signings and a huge trade and signing by my beloved football team. The Steelers acquired DK Metcalf from the Seahawks for a 2nd round pick, but then paid the talented wideout a five year, $150M dollar deal in the process. The bigger question is, who's the quarterback? Not Aaron Rodgers has been now rumored. I'll share who I want as QB as the Steelers go all in on procuring a WR. I'll dissect the deals inked by Josh Allen, Myles Garrett, Davante Adams (the first two were records in the league) as you'll get a complete assessment of that and look ahead to free agency, which begins on Wednesday. (1:06:51) Baseball is technically eight days away (in Tokyo with the Dodgers vs. Cubs) but we're two and a half weeks away from the season beginning. There have been plenty of injuries that have taken place throughout MLB. The Yankees are holding their collective breaths for the second spring in a row surrounding Gerrit Cole. Is Tommy John likely after he left a start with elbow discomfort? The Orioles have to hold out their young starter, Grayson Rodriguez with the same issue. The Mets have to put catcher Francisco Alvarez on the shelf for 6-8 weeks with a broken hamate bone. Vladimir Guerrero Jr's final offer to the Blue Jays was below $600 million dollars. How many years was he looking for? Is that too much? And the Athletics keep spending to have their nucleus in tact, extending OF Lawrence Butler to a six year deal. (1:12:45) Alex Pereira loses his fifth defense of his light heavyweight title to Magomed Ankalaev by unanimous decision on Saturday night. Is a rematch in order? On deck: (6:53) Gearing up for the home stretch of the NFL season as teams continue to jockey for playoff positioning. One team that could be in danger of not having their starting quarterback is Eagles Jalen Hurts. How long will be out of the lineup? Can they survive without him for any length of time? The AFC North is even at the top with the Steelers & Ravens holding the fort. Will Pittsburgh hang on to win the division? And why it's important for them to do so? Lamar Jackson had a solid performance on Saturday against his kryptonite in black and gold. Is he bound to win a third MVP? Or is Josh Allen still the favorite? I'll share a comparison with both as super productive regular season players who haven't delivered in the postseason. I'll check on what else is happening in the NFL with the NFC South & West and the entire playoff picture in both conferences. (37:29) The first ever expanded college football playoff is in the books. Sadly, there was absolutely NOTHING to write home about. I'll breakdown how Clemson, Indiana, SMU and Tennessee fell way short of not just pulling off upsets, but staying in these games to compete and advance to the semifinals. I'm concerned that we may see the same fate in the next round where Boise State and Arizona State will get a crack against Penn State & Texas, respectively. I'll keep you abreast on the health of Georgia QB Carson Beck, who'll likely miss the quarterfinal matchup vs. Notre Dame as we look ahead to New Year's Eve and New Year's Day to the next round. (49:49) With the annual Christmas Day extravaganza for the NBA forthcoming, it's come under some fire as reports of a decline in ratings and interest with the Association has surfaced. I'll explain why that's the case and have a quick fix to remedy it. Will it happen? Is it way too late to do so? I'll peek in to what's going on throughout the league as the schedule is pretty light because of the upcoming holiday. (1:02:19) Are the Buffalo Sabres not going to make the playoffs again? They're in the middle of a 13 game losing streak as of today. When will they snap out of it? Can they get back to being in the middle of the pack in the Eastern Conference? I'll see what's the latest in the NHL as they sport will head into a Christmas break after tonight. (1:06:19) Another passing of a baseball legend as I'll remember Rickey Henderson who died Friday night at the age of 65. The MLB Hot Stove is working overtime the past few days as there have been several transactions. The Yankees sign Paul Goldschmidt to play first base next year. Was that a good pick up? The Mets finally re-sign one of their own (no, not Pete Alonso) but pitcher Sean Manaea to a three year deal. They did miss out (and to my dismay) on signing Walker Buehler on the cheap. Guardian fans have a lot to be upset with as Josh Naylor gets shipped to Arizona. Why are they operating as a major league club if they can't re-sign their own players? Plus, other moves by the Phillies, Astros, Rangers and A's that have made news over the weekend. Every week, two of the Best Fans in Baseball (TM) bring you all the news and analysis you need about the St. Louis Cardinals. As of recording, the trade deadline is less than 48 hours away and it's still not clear what the Cardinals will do. They plan to be buyers but Daniel (@C70) and David (@iPopEditor) question if that is the right move for a team that feels like it's going to bob around .500 the rest of the way. The club sent Giovanny Gallegos packing, but was it for performance or was it a salary issue and if it's the latter, well, what in the world is going on here? The guys also talk about potential trade pieces from the Cardinals as well as try to make sense of Sonny Gray's recent struggles. All this and the tightrope walking David does trying to stay cogent while on medication!

It's a playoff/championship feel as the latest edition has arrived with plenty of pro and college football, sprinkled in with other sports to whet your appetite. On deck: (2:58) There was a quite a bit of activity in the NFL over the past few days. For starters, I'll get into the progress of the health regarding Bills safety, Damar Hamlin, as things continue to look brighter as the days pass on. I'll discuss the league's plan of this postseason (i.e. not resuming the Bills-Bengals regular season game, an AFC Championship Game potentially being at a neutral site, not forgoing the bye week between the Conference Title Games and the Super Bowl, Media Day at the Super Bowl, the regular season being too long) as I get on my soapbox sharing my deepest thoughts on the above. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED! Of course, I'll cap off Week 18 with my winners (i.e. Jacksonville & Miami) and losers (i.e. Las Vegas & Green Bay) and some of the other matchups that had playoff implications (including my beloved Steelers who fell short). Plus, a couple of storylines of what to look forward to on Wild Card Weekend. (41:21) A National Champion will be crowned in college football tonight as TCU tries to pull off another upset as they face the defending champs in Georgia. Do they have a shot? Are they able to compete straight up without getting the breaks they did in the previous game against Michigan? Will Georgia's close call vs. Ohio State be the catalyst for playing a lot crisper this time around? I'll predict what may take place as the college football season comes to a close. (49:01) The Nets are holding their collective breaths as Kevin Durant went down with a knee injury that needs an MRI. How long will he be out? The Clippers and Suns have been skidding out West mired in big losing streaks as they're hovering around the play in bracket as far as seeding is concerned. (52:55) The Capitals get back a couple of reinforcements from within as Nicklas Backstrom and Tom Wilson are back in the lineup for the first time all year. Jack Eichel makes a return to the Golden Knights after missing some time with a lower body injury. The Hurricanes have been relegated to a slight breeze as they've now lost three in a row after an eleven game winning streak. And the Bruins remain on fire as they're on a historic pace of wins and points this season. (55:54) As for the MLB, Trevor Bauer has been released by the Dodgers last week. Where does he end up? Will a GM take a flyer on the former Cy Young Award winner? (59:08) The first Grand Slam of the tennis season begins next week at the Australian Open, but it'll be without one of its biggest players as Carlos Alcaraz has to withdraw with a leg injury. Also, not in your scorecard will be Naomi Osaka, Simona Halep and Venus Williams. As for Alcaraz, are his injuries something will have to keep an eye on as he becomes the next great champion in the sport? (1:01:37) UFC president, Dana White, recently admitted and apologized for an incident in a Mexico club with his wife as they engaged in a physical altercation. He was contrite, exhibited ownership and accountability for his actions, which were indefensible. Is there a possible punishment for his in the near future? Nick of Island X lures came on the show and explained how to fish topwater lures in the surf. Even with waves, the Island X lures are designed for success. If you've been following the series on lures, this should help you in another realm as we talk about top-water fishing. If you go to his website, you can see them using one of the topwater lures from a boat and catching Striped Bass. Grateful to have you stop by to get my insight on what's happening in the sports universe as the latest episode has dropped! On deck: (3:45) Are we surprised that the Tampa Bay Lightning have made it back to the Stanley Cup Finals? They sure made me look like a fool (if you've listened to my takes over the past year plus) They will go for their third straight Cup championship which hasn't happened in almost 40 years. I'll discuss their series win over the Rangers, as well as, a postmortem on the Rangers postseason. Then preview a Final that will have a rested, high powered Avalanche team against the two time defending champs with a prediction as to who'll raise the Cup when it's all said and done. (23:36) The NBA Finals have been quite the battle as the Warriors led by Steph Curry, had a Game 4 for the ages in bringing the series back to the Bay Area tied at 2. What could we possibly expect over the next couple of games at the very least? Will the Celtics continue their perfect record after a loss? Same for the Warriors? What about Jayson Tatum as he's been subpar this series and needs to have that signature game? A lot to uncover as we get closer to crowning an NBA champion. Also, a new coaching hire in Charlotte (former Nets coach, Kenny Atkinson) Was it a good move? (34:54) As I turn my attention to baseball, the Yankees and Braves are flying high, while the Dodgers, Brewers and White Sox (a tough few days for manager, Tony LaRussa) are sliding a bit. The Yanks have won 11 of 12, but the competition will heat up over the next two weeks. The Braves have a soft schedule as they chase the Mets in the NL East. Meanwhile, the Dodgers have lost 9 of 13 and will lose a key member to their starting rotation, the Brewers snapped an eight game losing streak and what was Tony LaRussa thinking about intentionally walking a batter with TWO STRIKES?? I'll cover the baseball landscape as we're a little more than a month from the All-Star Game. (44:18) The first ever LIV Golf League event took place over the weekend where Charl Schwartzel was the winner pocketing almost more than half of what he would make at a major, let alone a regular golf tournament. With the PGA suspending players who've defected to the LIV league, not playing in any future events, will the current players on the Tour not make the jump and keep their Tour status in tact? (47:27) I'll briefly discuss The Belmont Stakes and how Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike showed us who we exactly thought he would be, ending up in sixth place as Mo Donegal was your winner to close out the Triple Crown of Horse Racing. (49:21) I'll cap off the pod with some news and notes in the NFL. Whether it's the ongoing Deshaun Watson saga, the Broncos impending new ownership and how do the Rams do it when it comes to manipulating the salary cap as they re-sign both Aaron Donald and Cooper Kupp to big extensions to go along with Matthew Stafford, Bobby Wagner, Allen Robinson, etc. (53:17) Of course, there's my Hero and Zero of the Week. (54:33) And a programming note for the podcast this coming Thursday that I'll keep you up to date as we get closer. Follow me on any of my social media accounts which are connected below. Latest Spoken Label session features the amazing Rebecca Kenny talking about her debut poetry collection 'Crash and Burn'. 'Crash and Burn' covers the events off "At 7.21am on October 1st 2021, Rebecca Kenny was driving to work when she lost control of her car. Skidding on oil and into the path of an oncoming vehicle, she was directly hit, breaking her back, neck, pelvis and sternum - a grand and somewhat impressive total of eleven bones. Following a week in a Major Trauma Centre and extensive physiotherapy, she was able to return home to recover. It was here she decided to document her journey. Crash & Learn is a collection of poetry written between October 1st and New Year's Day 2022, as Rebecca recovered from her injuries and learned to live with the massive changes the accident had made to her life. It explores the complex process of recovery, both physical and mental, and how a person learns to adjust to a new normal following a traumatic and life-changing event. Rebecca also runs the publishing house 'Bent Key Publishing' and more details about that and her book can be found at: https://www.bentkeypublishing.co.uk/ Pieces read out in this session include: 1. Karma... it's not necessarily a concept that many of us think of every day. More than likely, that word pops into our heads when we've caught ourselves acting like a bitch to someone who definitely didn't observe it. "Just wait till karma catches up with you...!"Others, myself included, have had some serious introspective moments when faced with our own mortality... or the death of someone close to us. I remember taking a long hard look at the afterlife and karma when I was first diagnosed with cancer, then again when my mother died. Media and popular culture may only point to karma when something bad happens, but at it's original core, what IS it?At its base, karma can be simply defined as cause and effect. But that doesn't mean that it is a simple concept. When my mom died, I remember feeling super guilty about all of the negative interactions and unkind attitudes I threw at her, especially when I was an adult. I harbored a lot of resentment because I had been abused growing up, and I certainly wasn't proud of the way I treated her. After the way I acted toward my mom... would anything bad happen to me? What happened to all that negative energy that existed between us for so long? Needless to say, karma definitely came up as a recurring thought. So then... What is karma? It isn't every single action and reaction that exists or happens in the Universe. It is the result of how we act. and it all starts with our MIND. If we investigate our minds and look at the patterns in our own consciousness, we begin to see that those patterns determine how the world responds to us. Think of karma as planting seeds. If you plant the seed of a maple tree, you are going to grow a maple. You won't end up with a pine or oak. So what seeds are WE planting? And even further down the link... which ones are we watering? Another key part of understanding karma is intention. Skidding on wet or icy roads and hitting another car is quite different than plowing into another car because you hate them and INTEND to hurt them, right? And the way the victim acts will definitely change depending on those intentions! And there are long and short-term intentions. Jack Kornfield described long-term intention as characterized, in some way, by the direction that we set our heart. While we may not see the fruits or results of that intention, it will guide us in a certain direction. Short-term intention can be related to the Power of the Pause, which I talked about in episode 44. Go back to that situation you imagined last week. That moment you remembered where you were triggered, and you were moments away from a very reactionary response. To set a short-term intention, ask yourself these three questions: >> What does my best intention want to respond? >> What would honor my deepest values? >> How do I want to show up in the world? Now, through your pause, and with those best intentions in mind, you can respond more creatively. And you can see that immediate impact of karma. Cause and effect. Intentions are the way our lives come to be - they energize us to be what we can be. To manifest everything that is possible for us. But this doesn't come naturally. It’s actually a totally rebellious act to do this. So today, I want to invite you to do what I ask of my Freedom School students: set an intention (or intentions) for your day – one that you say regularly as your long-term heart intention. Ask, “What is the most important thing I can do today, or one thing I can do today, or the most important way I can BE today, that will help me move towards my highest intention?” Whatever that thing is, karma or no karma… afterlives or not… What matters is how we show up here and now. That, more than anything, shapes how we experience this life. Topics in this week’s podcast: // What IS karma? And how does it affect our lives? // Short-term vs long-term intention // 3 days to check in with the authenticity of an intention // One thing you can do every day to move you toward your highest intention Resources: // Check out this related episode: Episode 44: The Power of the Pause // If you’re new to the squad, grab the starter kit I created at RebelBuddhist.com. They set out dinner, arrange a camping spot, and once it was dark enough, they set up the Night Tent. The trio hug and joke and laugh as they go about their tasks. Turbine assists with starting a fire, and Steam helps find tasty plants. Undertow stays in the Seafoam Satchel and rests from a grueling day. Once they are all settled and eating their meal of roasted veggies, bread, and cheese, the friends are eager to share their stories.Prism goes first, sharing the story of taking the stream. “You were right, Tonic. The stream is part of the village, and did not allow me to swim my way around the Marginalia's twisting. I had a terrible rough time. The stream was never where it should be, and sometimes it wasn't even a stream! I would swim forward into open water, only to bash into impossible rocks and muddy banks. Everything was disorienting and uncomfortable, and I hated feeling alone. Every time I thought I was making progress, I kept finding myself back beyond the wall, or halfway out in the forest! Once I even found myself in the ocean; I had to swim a current that was hidden in a subaquatic cave to keep up with that twist. The stream did not like my affinity for water, and had to pull a lot of tricks to keep me turned around! Everyway I faced was upstream current. Undertow could barely keep up with the flickering speed of twists. Skidding along the surface as fast as a freshening wind, that Wind Rabbit almost got twisted to places without me! I had nearly made it into the middle of the village, when I came to some shallows lush with cattails and thick with mountain laurel. The fight to get there was exhausting, as whatever way I went, I was fighting current. The place was gorgeous, though, just like The Shallows at home! Undertow sniffed a laurel bloom floating in the stream, just as the place twisted again. I was horrified! I barely caught a hindfoot as I felt the waters changing, and Undertow ended up stretched thin across several waters. Poor thing was barely a puff for a while. I gathered Undertow up into my arms, calling the fierce little Gale to me across the wide winds and waters. It took forever, I was worn out from trying to stay still in the shifting river, but every moment Undertow was stretched meant another twist and a further stretch of the wind rabbit. I gathered as swiftly as I could, coiling the rabbit up and gathering as much breeze into my arms as I could; I think Undertow lost a bit of an ear, but it will heal.” Prism gently pets the sleeping rabbit in the satchel and goes on, “Once I had Undertow together I just slumped against the riverbank and stayed still, cradling the little Wind Rabbit as the world twisted around us. I think I slept that way for a while. That's where we were when Undertow heard Steam singing. I'm so glad I was already holding the rabbit, or I never would have been able to keep up! I'm so relieved to be with you both again. I missed you, my friends.” Prism finishes the story with a smile and a friendly hand-squeeze.Atcher's story is next, of using a Sudden Idea and getting help from some Bits and Pieces. “I didn't think we could just ASK for help, and I really wanted to use a Sudden Idea about maps! I opened to a fresh page in my birchbark journal, and started mapping what I could see of the town. The Sudden Idea helped orient me, and I kept track of where I'd traveled with my stratigraphy skirt. I walked around part of the outside of the Village, but the edges kept mutating, and didn't properly match up. I was sometimes one one side, sometimes another, but never going where I wanted to. I took a break to rest and re-organize my map pages; I have pieces of maps crammed in all over multiple pages. It's a mess! While resting I was reorganizing my birchbark journal, and also my bronze bag when I found a Bit hidden in the bottom! I have a Piece in my pocket, and I think I focused on that for a while; I remember the light changing. It might have been night, because I got out the folded-up Night Tent and used it as a glowing star to see by. I was eventually able to construct a Useful Device, which was reenergizing for me! Unfortunately, the Useful Device I created wasn't much help with the specific problem of navigating the Village of Twist; it allows me to see further, but as the village keeps changing and shifting, seeing distant things wasn't really pertinent. It just made me more aware of how lost I was in regards to my mission.” Atcher says while showing the crammed map pages and Useful Device to the friends. After Prism and Tonic get to examine the maps and murmur appreciatively over the Useful Device, Atcher packs them back away in the bronze bag, knowing the Useful Device will be helpful later. Tonic shares the story of befriending River Brindle, and getting guided through the ever-changing village of Twist.*Much later, Tonic learns that River Brindle journeyed far away, and the gnome realized they weren't likely to meet again. Tonic made a note in Graeme's journal, “Although having friends too far away to visit may be sad, it is good to have met them. Some friends are deeply important to us even when we only see them for a short time. Being far away doesn't end a friendship.” Tonic wished they had exchanged some way to send letters to each other. “A happy thing to look forward to from a friend is a much needed delight.” was also recorded in the journal by the gnome. The three friends are happy to be reunited, and get some much needed rest. The next morning, Tonic, Atcher, and Prism are all together, and the Lintel is close. “River Brindle said the Tree Beyond the Garden is just past this meadow, in the woods there.” Tonic points. “So after we break our fast, we'll be on our way!”With the sun already up as the friends finish breakfast, Atcher nearly manages to get the Night Tent mostly folded up again. Rather than a hand-sized glowing star, it looks more like a pillow-sized moldy sandwich, but at least it is mostly put away. The morning light warms up the wide meadow, evaporating dew, and waking the flowers. It promises to be a lovely morning, and they are almost at the end of their journey. Walking hand-in-hand-in-hand the three friends cavort across the meadow. “You know what?” Tonics asks aloud, “I feel much lighter. I don't have the urgency I felt at the start of the Wanderlust. I've traveled some, I've been to new places, met new people, I even helped the Season Knights! I think I'm coming around to the idea of going home again.” The meadow, which had looked so short, seemed to just keep unrolling in front of them. The friends soon slowed their cavort to a calm walk, and eventually a puzzled plod.Sweaty, slightly confused, and appearing to be about halfway through a meadow that should only be 20 paces across, the brownie, sprite, and gnome pause to assess their situation. “How long is this meadow?!” Prism exclaims as the trio rest.Looking towards the woods on the far side, Atcher points across the meadow, “Is that it up ahead? I think I see something!” The friends turn and see a colored dome in the distance. Excited, the trio run and tumble toward the not-too-distant dome, and the Wind Rabbits run behind them, rushing wind at their backs.

The Hardy Family - Andy Hardy was a fictional character played by Mickey Rooney in an extremely successful MGM film series from 1937 to 1958. Spanning over 20 years, the 16 movies were based on characters in the play Skidding by Aurania Rouverol. The initial Hardy film, A Family Affair (1937), was made before a series was contemplated. It featured Lionel Barrymore as Judge Hardy and Spring Byington as Mrs. Hardy, Andy's parents, and Margaret Marquis as Andy's on-again-off-again sweetheart, Polly Benedict. But when the series was launched, most of the cast was changed, with the notable exceptions of Rooney and Sara Haden as his Aunt Milly. The series entries starred Lewis Stone as Judge Hardy, Fay Holden as Mrs. Hardy, Cecilia Parker as Andy's older sister Marian Hardy, and Ann Rutherford as Polly. Most of the movies were set in the Hardys' fictional hometown of Carvel, located in Idaho in the original play but described in the films as being in the Midwest. All of the films were sentimental comedies celebrating ordinary American life. The people in Carvel, by and large, were pious, patriotic, generous and tolerant. The town represented movie mogul Louis B. Mayer's idealized vision of his adopted country. Some writers have compared Carvel to Mayberry, the setting of The Andy Griffith Show a generation later.
