It sure looks like Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is trying to make life easier for Alberta separatists. Her UCP government's removing barriers to trigger a referendum (on Alberta sovereignty, obviously) at the same time she's rattling her sabre at Prime Minister Mark Carney. Folks grounded in reality know Alberta's not going anywhere...so why would Smith stick her neck out there? 4:30 | The Discourse co-hosts Cheryl Oates and Erika Barootes get into the UCP's Bill 54 including union/corporate donations and referendum triggers (20:45). We analyze NDP MLA Jodi Calahoo-Stonehouse's tactical takedown of Premier Danielle Smith (26:00) and a cease and desist from two First Nations chiefs (36:00). How about Jamil Jivani's flamethrower attack on Ontario Premier Doug Ford (41:30)! After losing the election and his seat, where does Pierre Poilievre go from here (49:30)? We look at top post-election Alberta storylines (1:02:20), and debate whether or not Rachel Notley should seek the federal NDP leadership (1:06:00). 1:17:20 | Jespo reads a couple awesome emails from Real Talkers G and Joel. Gun violence has been on the rise in recent years, particularly in urban centres. Over these past weeks the Liberal government has brought forward policy to take assault weapons out of the hands of law abiding citizens.Advocates of the policy say assault weapons have no place in Canada. Critics say that it is wasteful and misguided to focus on law abiding Canadians when these crimes are done by criminals who almost always use illegal weapons. $600 million is being pledged to taking guns back from law abiding citizens. Under $100 million to fighting illegal gun smuggling. The conversation is on.This week we are airing an interview with Jamil Jivani who almost radicalized as a young man.In Grade 11 Jamil was moments away from owning an illegal gun and entering into a life of crime. At the last minute he had a change of heart and decided to chart a new path for his life.Years later he is a lawyer, award winning advocate and author of Why Young Men - Race, Rage and the Crisis of Identity. This show was recorded before the Nova Scotia mass shooting and before the recent crack down on guns by the Liberal government - yet Jamil's insights are incredibly insightful for the days we find ourselves in.

The day after the 2015 Paris terror attacks, twenty-eight-year-old Canadian Jamil Jivani opened the newspaper to find that the men responsible were familiar to him. He didn't know them, but the communities they grew up in and the challenges they faced mirrored the circumstances of his own life. His book, 'Why Young Men' traces Jivani's education as an activist fighting one of today's most dangerous and intractable problems: acts of violence by angry young men. Jivani relates his personal story, his work with disenfranchised people of colour in North America and at risk youth in the Middle East and Africa, and his experiences with the white working class. He profiles a diverse array of young men – and those trying to help them – drawing parallels between these groups, refuting the popular belief that they are radically different from each other, and offering concrete steps towards countering this global trend.Jamil joined Max Lewis to chat about the process of writing the book and revisiting his adolescence, the role of the media in shaping identity, and what parents can do to make sure their sons aren't going down a dangerous path. Jamil Jivani (recorded 01/09/19) joins Dr. Jordan B. Peterson. Jamil is the author of, Why Young Men. About Jamil's Book: Jamil Jivani recounts his experiences working as a youth activist throughout North America and the Middle East, drawing striking parallels between ISIS recruits, gangbangers, and Neo-Nazis in the West. Having narrowly escaped a descent into crime and gang violence in his native Toronto, Jivani has devoted his life to helping other at-risk youths avoid this fate in cities across North America. After the Paris terrorist attacks of 2016, he traveled to Europe and the Middle East to assist Muslim community outreach groups focused on deterring ISIS recruitment. Why Young Men is the story of Jivani’s education as an activist on the front lines of one of today’s most dangerous and intractable problems: the explosion of violence among angry young men throughout the world. Jivani relates his personal story and describes his entrance into the community outreach movement, his work with disenfranchised people of color in North America and at-risk youth in the Middle East and Africa, and his experiences with the white working class. The reader learns along with him as he profiles a diverse array of young men and interviews those who are trying to help them, drawing parallels between these groups, refuting the popular belief that they are radically different from each other, and offering concrete steps toward countering this global trend.
