“The streaming bubble finally popped, and I think the tip of the spear that popped it was the double strikes we had last year and now we're calling it the great contraction. It's a really tough time for up-and-coming writers to break in. It's tough for everyone, even up-and-coming agents and managers, anyone coming out to Hollywood to pursue a career. It's one of the toughest times ever, so you need to be patient,” says literary manager Jeff Portnoy, of Bellevue Productions. On today's podcast, guest host Lee Jessup, Hollywood's leading screenwriting career coach and judge of the Big Break screenwriting competition, interviews Jeff Portnoy, literary manager for Bellevue Productions. They discuss the current state of the industry and how it's affecting writers. “We've been encouraging a lot of new writers to focus on features at the moment and explaining how bleak the TV staffing market is right now. So if they have hopes of getting staffed, it's very difficult right now. Typically, if we had a client who wants to write in the TV space, we'd help them get a TV agent and we, the agents and I, would go out and try to get them staffed. But agents aren't really signing anyone below mid level right now, so they're not taking on those up-and-coming writers,” says Portnoy. But there is hope considering business trends are always cyclical. Portnoy shares this advice about writing spec features in this climate: “You want to stand out and that comes down to your ideas. The execution has to be great. It's about choosing ideas that really stand out in a pack – the words I like to use are loud, bold, audacious. Managers, agents, producers – we see thousands of loglines a month and if we see a logline that's loud, audacious and bold, it's going to stand out.” To hear more about the state of the industry, listen to the podcast.
When it comes to biting satire and outrageous humour, Tropic Thunder remains a standout in the annals of Hollywood comedies. Released in 2008, this film, directed by Ben Stiller, is a unique blend of action, absurdity, and razor-sharp commentary on the entertainment industry itself. In this Tropic Thunder Movie Review, we dive deep into the film's multilayered humour, its over-the-top performances, and the controversies that have kept it relevant long after its initial release.Plot Breakdown and SetupTropic Thunder follows the chaotic production of a Vietnam War film that spirals out of control when its pampered, clueless actors are dropped into the jungle for some “method” filmmaking. What starts as a fictional movie quickly devolves into real-life danger, though the cast has no idea they are no longer pretending. The plot is as meta as it gets—a movie about making a movie, where the line between fiction and reality is hilariously blurred.Ben Stiller plays Tugg Speedman, a fading action star desperately seeking credibility by taking on a “serious” role in a war drama. His co-stars include Kirk Lazarus (played by Robert Downey Jr.), a multiple Oscar-winning actor who undergoes a controversial pigment alteration surgery to play a Black soldier, and Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black), a drug-addicted comedian known for his gross-out humour. Alongside them are Kevin Sandusky (Jay Baruchel), the earnest newbie, and Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson), a rapper-turned-actor trying to maintain his street cred. As the film's director loses control, the actors must survive real threats in the jungle, thinking it's all part of the shoot.A Satirical Punch to Hollywood's EgoAt its core, Tropic Thunder is an unflinching satire of Hollywood excess, egotism, and the absurd lengths actors go to in search of acclaim. The film skewers method acting, self-important stars, and the exploitative nature of the movie business. Ben Stiller, who not only stars but directs, doesn't shy away from poking fun at the very industry that made him famous.Stiller's Tugg Speedman embodies the desperation of actors clinging to their fading stardom. His previous attempts to earn respect as a serious actor—most notably in the disastrous Simple Jack, where he plays a mentally disabled man—are a clear jab at how Hollywood sometimes exploits sensitive topics for awards. The film pulls no punches in exposing the cynical calculation behind some “prestige” performances.Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal of Kirk Lazarus, a method actor who famously “doesn't break character until the DVD commentary,” takes method acting to absurd extremes. The decision for Lazarus to undergo a skin pigmentation procedure to play a Black character is undeniably provocative, pushing the boundaries of satire in ways that sparked debate even upon the film's release. The character is a vehicle for Tropic Thunder to critique the pretentiousness of actors who go to unhealthy or inappropriate lengths to inhabit their roles—without excusing the controversial nature of Lazarus's arc.Meanwhile, Jack Black's Jeff Portnoy represents a different Hollywood trope: the comedic actor known for lowbrow, bodily-function-driven humour who secretly longs for artistic respect. Black leans into this portrayal with reckless abandon, turning Portnoy into a parody of a certain kind of comedian trapped by his own public persona. The Performances: A Career High for Downey Jr.Though the entire cast delivers hilarious performances, Robert Downey Jr. steals the show with his portrayal of Kirk Lazarus. His commitment to the role is complete, both playing up the absurdity of Lazarus's method acting and delivering an authentic, sharp commentary on Hollywood's more troubling habits. Downey Jr.'s performance walks a very fine line—one that could have easily veered into offensive territory. However, by using the character to critique the very behaviour he is embodying, the role becomes an effective, albeit a controversial, form of satire. His role earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, cementing it as one of the most memorable comedic performances of the 2000s.Ben Stiller's turn as the washed-up action star is also noteworthy, mainly because his character serves as the audience's guide through the absurdity of the film's events. Stiller's deadpan delivery and earnest attempts at drama make Tugg Speedman's cluelessness all the more entertaining.Jack Black, as Jeff Portnoy, veers into more chaotic, physical comedy, adding a layer of absurd humour to the group's dynamic. His struggles with drug addiction while lost in the jungle add a layer of vulnerability to the otherwise outlandish character.Controversy and Cultural ImpactTropic Thunder courted its fair share of controversy upon release, particularly for its portrayal of Kirk Lazarus and its use of blackface as a satirical device. Robert Downey Jr. defended the role as an exploration of actors' ethical boundaries, and the film itself uses Lazarus's storyline to highlight the ridiculous lengths some performers will go for their craft. Still, the role continues to prompt discussions on what constitutes effective satire versus offensive content.Additionally, the film's subplot involving Tugg Speedman's role in Simple Jack—a blatant parody of Hollywood's handling of disability—also generated pushback from advocacy groups. These controversies, however, are key to understanding the film's legacy. Tropic Thunder was always intended to provoke, challenge, and make audiences uncomfortable as they laugh.Despite (or perhaps because of) these controversies, Tropic Thunder remains a touchstone in discussions about satire, comedy, and filmmakers' responsibilities when dealing with sensitive topics. Its willingness to push boundaries and make audiences question the ethics of the film industry itself is part of what keeps it relevant more than 15 years later.Cinematic Elements: More than Just ComedyOn the technical side, Tropic Thunder is surprisingly well-made for what is primarily a comedy. John Toll's cinematography brings an epic, blockbuster feel to the film, particularly in the action sequences that are staged with the same level of intensity as a serious war movie. Theodore Shapiro's score also works in tandem with the action, providing a dramatic undertone that heightens the film's satirical edge. The jungle setting, explosive battles, and grandiose direction all emphasise how over-the-top Hollywood productions can become, underscoring the film's satire. While Tropic Thunder could have quickly been shot with a straightforward, low-budget comedy aesthetic, the decision to treat it like an actual war film makes the story's absurdity all the more pronounced.Legacy: A Satirical Time CapsuleIn many ways, Tropic Thunder serves as a time capsule of mid-2000s Hollywood. It captured a specific moment in the film industry when method acting, prestige pictures, and action blockbusters dominated the cultural conversation. The film remains controversial, but it's also widely regarded as one of the best satirical comedies of its time. Whether it skewers egotistical actors, lampoons Hollywood's excesses, or simply delivers absurd, laugh-out-loud moments, Tropic Thunder stands as a film that invites laughter and introspection in equal measure. As we explore Tropic Thunder's genius and provocations in this podcast episode, we ask: Does it still hold up? Is it a biting satire of Hollywood or an offens...

Welcome to the Cinema Sitdown! This week's pick is from Jerry, and he decided on the 2008 meta-Hollywood-action movie, Tropic Thunder! Tropic Thunder tells the story of Tugg Speedman, a flailing action movie star finding himself on the wrong side of fame. To regain some of his audience pull after the disaster of his previous movie, Simple Jack, he teams up with some of the biggest stars of the time to create a 60's war movie sure to bring in the big bucks as well as possible Oscar buzz. Joined by comedian Jeff Portnoy, rapper/pro-capitalist Alpa Chino, newcomer Kevin Sandusky and 5-time Oscar winner, Kirk Lazarus, this wild group of dudes attempt to tell one man's story of barely making it out of Vietnam and all the lose he endured along the way. But like Speedman's role in his critically acclaimed “Scorcher” series, trouble is just around the corner as egos, greed and general idiocy threaten to derail Tugg's entire re-branding. Fox's Host Texts in Court Docs Prove it. The hosts for this show are Tim Apicella and Jay Fidell. The guests are Cynthia Lee Sinclair and Jeff Portnoy. We know many of Fox's prime time line-up of hosts--Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Lou Dobbs, Jeanine Pirro--and they all have one thing in common. They all knew Trump's cries of a stolen 2020 election was false, and court records of their multiple texts prove that. In a $1.6B case against Fox News, a trove of documents filed by Dominion attorneys not only shine a light on these hosts' texts, but also communications from Rupert Murdoch and Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott. The messages were clear: there was a deep concern that Fox viewers were heading for the doors to Newsmax because Fox was not playing into Trump's 'Big Lie' claims. Ratings and profits won out, and the false stolen election lies Fox News reported on is now journalistic, or the total lack of it, history. The panel explores what Fox did and impacts to future news reporting. The New Wild West of Social Media. The hosts for this show are Tim Apicella and Jay Fidell. The guest is Jeff Portnoy. Elon Musk owns Twitter lock stock and barrel. The first thing he does is terminate those employees that monitor content, hate speech. With his philosophy that there will be few limitations of the First Amendment--free speech--content monitoring is an inconvenient overhead expense. Since his purchase, slurs against Black Americans increased to 3,876 posts per day from 1,282. Antisemitic posts soared 61% in the first two weeks. Slurs against gay men averaged 2,506 prior to Musk's purchase. It now stands at an average of 3,964 posts. QAnon groups paid for Twitter's stamp of approval for 'verified status'. They received it. Trump's Twitter posts to encourage the MAGA GOP is no longer needed. Extremist hate groups are doing just fine on their own, thanks to Elon. New Special Council, Jack Smith Takes over. The hosts for this show are Tim Apicella and Jay Fidell. The guests are Chuck Crumpton and Jeff Portnoy. If you map out the many events that led to the Jan 6 attack on the nation's Capital, they may appear random. However, each road was designed to install Trump back as president after his election loss: the 59 lawsuits that failed, the fake state electors that planned to be installed, the MAGA GOP state legislators that coordinated to install them, the plan for Sidney Powell (Trump's attorney) to be appointed as Special Council in order to have the military confiscate voting machines,Trump's quest to intimidate the GA Secretary of State to find an additional 11,780 votes, the pressure brought onto the Arizona's House Speaker to declare the election was filled with fraud, persuading the DOJ that there was enough evidence of fraud to warrant an election investigation, the pressure brought upon VP Mike Pence to not certify the Electoral College votes, and the invitation for thousands of MAGA GOP to march on the Capital. All attempts were connected to reinstall Trump as a two-term president. Looking at his Disruptions, it Seems Unlikely. The host for this show is Jay Fidell. The guests are Stephanie Dalton, Jeff Portnoy and Chuck Crumpton. So far, the Trump-GOP has voted to support Ukraine, but how long will that last if it takes Congress in November. Our panel examines Trump's history regarding Ukraine in order to connect the dots on what will happen in January. Trump is still the cult leader of the party, so we need to take a look at Trump's attempts to corrupt Volodymyr Zelensky and the first impeachment, the Mueller investigation, James Comey, Steele Report, Trump's lies about his projects with Putin in Russia, his secret conversations with Putin, his strange remarks to Putin criticizing US intelligence agencies, his open admiration for Putin and other autocrats who support Putin, Trump's silence and lack of criticism about Putin's invasion of Ukraine, the Trump-Russian flags that appeared at the recent CPAC conference, and Trump's compulsive need to criticize anything Joe Biden does in Ukraine and otherwise in advance of the mid-term elections. How Would his Departure Affect America. The host for this show is Jay Fidell. The guests are Stephanie Dalton and Jeff Portnoy. Our panel addresses what happens if Trump left the political stage. How would that affect America. Nobody lasts forever especially when they're pushing 80. What would happen to his sycophants and acolytes, to his base and unthinking loyalists. What would happen to the racial tension in the country and the division and bigotry. What would happen to American foreign policy, the EU, NATO, Ukraine and Russia and for that matter China and Taiwan. What would happen to all the various investigations against him and his friends. What would happen to the GOP, the 2022 elections and the presidential elections in 2024. How 50 Years of Settled Law Gets Unsettled. The hosts for this show are Tim Apicella and Jay Fidell. The guests are Cynthia Lee Sinclair and Jeff Portnoy. A rare leak obtained by Politico reflects a U.S. Supreme Court draft opinion that Roe v. Wade abortion rights for women would be reversed after 50 years of settled case law. The leaked opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito would create a patchwork of actions across the country to preserve or abolish abortion rights. As this was a draft opinion, no formal vote from the court has taken place, therefore the decision is yet to be final. The question we must ask those justices who claimed that Roe v. Wade was settled law during their Senate Confirmation Committee Hearings, now voting to reverse it, is just how honest was their testimony to the Senate and the American public? The panel explores the many issues associated with the likely reversal of Roe v. Wade. Literary manager Jeff Portnoy joins the show to discuss this cult classic film, a bizarre midnight movie starring Emilio Esteves and Harry Dean Stanton. Directed by Alex Cox, this has been a frequent request for the show. I highly suggest watching it at 2 am while under the influence of some kind of substance. It's out there and totally unique, but if you're in the mood for something different, it should hit the spot. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dan-benamor/support
Just how offensive is Tropic Thunder? Very! Join the Fellowship for our review and deep dive into Tropic Thunder, starring Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black, and Tom Cruise. Tropic Thunder synopsis: While shooting a war film, the director attempts to liven up proceedings by dropping the principle actors into the middle of a real jungle, claiming he is going to capture their performance with hidden cameras. The hapless group including drug-addled comedy star Jeff Portnoy and po-faced method man Kirk Lazarus are completely unaware when a series of unfortunate events leads them into the middle of a real war zone. Couch Potato Theater: TROPIC THUNDER (2008) Join us for this very special edition of Couch Potato Theater as we look back and celebrate one of the funniest comedies in the last 20 years, TROPIC THUNDER. Tropic Thunder is a 2008 satirical action comedy film directed by Ben Stiller. It stars Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Jay Baruchel, and Brandon T. Jackson as a group of prima donna actors who are making a Vietnam War film. TROPIC THUNDER Plot Synopsis: to make the war movie to end all war movies, the British director, Damien Cockburn, assembles an A-list of prima-donna actors--Tugg Speedman, Jeff Portnoy, and Kirk Lazarus--to turn into a Vietnam epic the authentic memoirs of the burnt-out veteran, "Four Leaf" Tayback. However--with the movie already behind schedule, and the producer threatening to abandon the project--the ambitious filmmaker drops the cast in the impenetrable Vietnamese jungle to add a dash of realism, unbeknownst to them that the entire region is controlled by an armed-to-the-teeth heroin-producing gang. Now, amid a glorious improvisation extravaganza with live ammunition, the stars of the show will have to step up and work together for the first time in a long while. Do they have what it takes to get out of there in one piece? Join Kevin, Lee and Kyle as they take a look back at this fan favorite comedy with a fantastic cast and see how it has remained a true classic to this day, and a film that represents everything that Couch Potato Theater is all about.
