Becky Collins and Jennifer Joseph, volunteers with the Bayou Teche Museum in New Iberia, join Discover Lafayette to discuss the museum's inaugural fundraising musical event, Music On Main, taking place November 21, 2024. Located at the Bayou Teche Trading Company, Music on Main will be filled with food, music, and fun! The two bands performing are The Eighties Experience, an 80's and 90's tribute band, and 5th Avenue, playing R&B, country, and zydeco music. Co-chair member Jennifer Joseph says, “we're also going to be combining music with laughter” and Jerrod Guillory, a local comedian, will certainly bring laughs to the event. Music On Main is a casual event that takes place both indoors and outdoors so Jennifer says “come as you want," but get there early because there is a capacity limit. The first band starts at 7pm; doors open at 6pm. Attendees can park in Bouligny Plaza or across from the Bayou Teche Trading Company. Admission is $60 per person, and tickets can be purchased on their website, their Facebook page, or at the door at the event. The museum is also asking for sponsors to donate to the fundraiser in one of 3 tiers: The Bronze level at $250 will receive 2 complimentary tickets, Silver at $500 will receive 4 tickets, and Gold at $1000 will receive 8 tickets. All proceeds will go towards expansion of the museum, namely the “Doc” Voorhies wing, and improvements to the exhibits. When there isn't a fun-filled music event, the Bayou Teche Museum is open from 10-4 on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. There is an admission fee, but Veteran's tickets are free so Becky and Jennifer urge Veterans to check out the museum. The Bayou Teche Museum at 131 E. Main Street, opened in 2010, and displays historic exhibits and art from New Iberia and the surrounding areas. Becky Collins states the museum's mission: “Our mission is simple: Education, preservation, and engagement”. It reflects the excitement of New Iberia as well as the rich history of the towns along the Bayou Teche. As proof of her love New Iberia, Becky tells us, “I could live anywhere in the United States…we choose to live there because it is such an exciting place”. The museum serves as a bridge to bring the community together, and with a diverse board of directors, they are open to any suggestions to improve the museum. Going with their mission of engaging with the community, the museum wants to include members from pre-school as well as those from nursing homes and assisted living. The museum is hoping to add more interactive exhibits with the funds from the music event. When you step into the museum, there is a timeline that starts all the way back to 10000 BC where it traces the earliest Native Americans through New Iberia. It also includes artifacts and pottery from 400 AD connected to the Atakapa tribe. The timeline ends in 2013 as the museum was opening. There are several interesting artifacts thanks to the generous donations from the community. The Exhibit Acquisition Committee is in charge of going through these donations and determining if they have a purpose and fit the meaning of the museum. Some special exhibits include stories from Beyonce and Solange Knowles, who have connections to New Iberia, as part of their music area, and the painting that George Rodrigue was working on when he died. Becky Collins also tells us about her favorite exhibit, the Salt Mine. In this part of the museum, guests can step into an elevator and “it simulates what it would be like to ride down to the bottom of the salt mine”. It involves a fully immersive experience, including a lever that triggers a dynamite explosion. Exciting and interesting exhibits such as these are possible through generous donations from the community, so they urge those interested to join them on November 21st for Music On Main. We were in the studio today with Jennifer Hall, Director of Community Engagement, and Joseph Jablonski, Volunteer Coordinator for Valley Assistance Network - a program of United Way of Northern Shenandoah Valley. We talked about their program, what it does, who it serves and the important role it plays in the community to help residents and families in the Shenandoah Valley to navigate community resources on their path to financial stability. Joseph also told us about the volunteer opportunities available and the various skill set(s) and personality traits needed to be a successful volunteer. We also discussed the area's first ever Code Blue that was issued from January 19th to January 21st of 2019 in response to temperatures around six degrees those nights. VAN and Faithworks worked to make temporary emergency shelter possible for the homeless those nights with a special focus on families, collecting donations and supplying shelter to ten additional people. You can still donate to this cause here: https://www.givelify.com/givenow/1.0/MjUxNzE=/selection We continued our conversation after the show aired so that Jennifer & Joseph could tell us about some specific examples and real-life stories of those their organization has helped. Here are a few statistics from Valley Assistance Network's first year: 85% of referrals made are for Financial Stability resources; 10% for Health and 5% for Education. 125 families report being homeless. 176 families are at-risk of being homeless. 71% of clients are ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed). They are working but not earning enough to make ends meet. 40% of clients are single parents. 1 in 3 clients have medical insurance, and just 1 in 4 have a primary care doctor. Just 26% of families have a bank account. Housing assistance, eviction and homelessness are the top reasons for contacting VAN. For more information about Valley Assistance Network, visit their website: https://www.unitedwaynsv.org/VAN or visit their office located at 411 N. Cameron Street, Suite 210 on the Our Health campus. They are open Monday - Thursday from 9am - 5pm and by appointment on Friday. You can call them at (540) 773-3178 and follow them on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ValleyAssistanceNetwork/

Altered States looks at contemporary artists who explore psychedelia (mostly painting and some constructions with a mix of figuration, geometric and Op imagery) against a back drop of 1960s Op Art, figurative and Color Field paintings, as well as original rock posters from concerts at the Fillmore West, Avalon Ballroom and other San Francisco venues to set the stage and create the mood. Psychedelia, influenced by surrealism, visual perception and Op Art along with others such as Art Nouveau, Indian textiles and Pop Art defined the 1960s and Counter Culture movement and was ever present in rock culture on album covers, poster art and light shows as the back drop for concerts. The exhibition, Altered States, will feature contemporary Santa Fe artists Andrew Cimelli, Jennifer Joseph, Caity Kennedy, Daniel McCoy Jr., Heather McGill and Martin Rixe, as well as Vadim Stepanov, a Russian painter living in Tel Aviv. The historic backdrop for this presentation will include paintings by Richard Anuszkiewicz, Francis Celentano, Tom Green, Ed Mieczkowski, Rakuko Naito, Paul Reed, Oli Sihvonen, Julian Stanczak, Tadasky and Leo Valledor.

Not since the Green River Killer had the Pacific Northwest been terrorized by so savage a serial killer. By day, Robert Lee Yates, Jr., 48 was a respected father of five, a skilled helicopter pilot who served in Desert Storm and the National Guard, and a man no one suspected of a deadly hidden life. By night he prowled the streets where prostitutes gathered, gaining their trust before betraying them with a bullet to the head. On August 26, 1997, the half-naked body of 16-year-old street prostitute Jennifer Joseph was found in an empty lot in Spokane, Washington. The same day, the decomposed corpse of prostitute Heather Hernandez, 20, was discovered in a wheat field. Both women had been shot point blank in the head. By the day after Christmas, four more women were added to the mounting death toll. All were found with plastic grocery bags tied over their heads - the gruesome signature of a killer who had sexually violated each one of them after snuffing out their lives. Spokane's elite Homicide Task Force's intense investigation turned up only one common link: a white Corvette driven by a frequent customer of Spokane's prostitutes. Investigators found a button from Jennifer Joseph's blouse and multiple blood stains in a vehicle recently sold by Yates Jr. On October 18, 2000, Yates pled guilty to 13 murders and was sentenced to 408 years. Sentenced for two similar murders in Washington's Pierce County, Yates is now on death row, awaiting execution. BODY COUNT-RE-RELEASE-Burl Barer
