Episode 330 -- Tony Liberati on Jimmie Johnson's Deal with Hendrick Motorsports and Unbelievable Wins with Todd Bodine

In the third and final installment of our interview with Tony Liberati, Rambo goes to victory lane with Jimmie Johnson … but NOT before the future NASCAR Hall of Famer has already agreed to go Winston Cup racing with Hendrick Motorsports. Tony sticks with Herzog Motorsports and wins another couple of races with Todd Bodine, before economics forces the team to shut its doors while still in the hunt for the Busch Series championship. We then take a deep dive into the July 19, 2001 issue of Winston Cup Scene. There was a seismic fallout from Jimmy Spencer's comments that Dale Earnhardt Jr's recent Daytona win was somehow fixed and Tony Stewart was feeling the heat after HIS Daytona tirade. And … oh yeah … by the way … Kevin Harvick and Jimmie Johnson won at Chicagoland. NOTE: This show is not associated in any way with American City Business Journals, owner of the Scene brand. Industry veteran Wendy Venturini joins Davey Segal this week (7:40) to discuss her vast career in and out of motorsports spanning almost a quarter of a century. She explains the misconception with her last name and ARCA Menards Series powerhouse Venturini Motorsports, growing up in a racing family, pursuing motorsports as a career avenue and starting at the bottom in production before working her way up to on air broadcasting. Venturini also shares the story of how the opportunity at SPEED came about while working at NASCAR Productions, the experience of working on NASCAR RaceDay with Rutledge Wood, Kenny Wallace, Jimmy Spencer, John Roberts and more, the differences and nuances between television and radio and what makes each discipline unique. She also reflects on her near fatal accident in 2018 at Sonoma, where she suffered a basilar skull fracture after being struck by a car, the road to recovery that followed (figuratively and literally) and those that helped her along the way to return to broadcasting some 2 months later (!) at Bristol Motor Speedway, of all places. She also dives into her entrepreneurial success as an owner of Burn Boot Camp franchises, how it may have helped save her life, what she'd still like to accomplish in her career and more. Davey also discusses Kyle Larson's dominant Bristol win and the ensuing industry reaction to the performance, previews Kansas to kick off the Cup Series Round of 12 and Papa Segal pays homage to "Big Daddy" Don Garlits.

Mention his name today, and most will recognize Tim Fedewa as the longtime spotter for Kevin Harvick. But like so many other folks up in the spotter's stand, Tim began his career as a driver in and around his home state of Michigan.   He eventually moved south to go Busch Series racing with Ray and Diane DeWitt, who took him to his first win in 1995 at Nazareth. Tim wound up at BACE Motorsports, where he had a front-row seat to the chaos … and success … of teammates Randy LaJoie, crew chief Steve Bird, and team owner Bill Baumgardner.    Tim then ran into his OWN contractual issues with the team, which prevented him from landing a ride that turned out to be one of the most successful in Busch Series history.    We then tackle the May 25, 1995 issue of Winston Cup Scene.    A bad storm gets things kicked off at Charlotte the weekend of The Winston Select all-star race. Jeff Gordon fires up his Hendrick Motorsports crew before going out and putting it to the rest of the field in the main event.    Kenny Schrader races his way into the all-star race, just a week after losing part of his thumb in a freak accident. And then has a bit of a rough encounter with Mr. Excitement, Jimmy Spencer. Dale Earnhardt and Darrell Waltrip try to make a run on Gordon in the final ten-lap shootout but wind up running into each other and crashing.    Plus, future high-ranking NASCAR official Elton Sawyer gets whacked with a penalty. Tim Fedewa wins the first race of his Busch Series career at Nazareth by stretching his fuel supply and staying out of the carnage in the first half of the event.    Chad Little weighs racing against law school … and racing almost wins, before momma and daddy step in. Finally, Kyle Petty REALLY wants to get to Memphis on time during his annual cross-country motorcycle ride, so he can visit Graceland, home of his hero, Elvis Presley. FIRST … we're gonna dig into the January 30, 1997 issue of Winston Cup Scene. Shawn Parker appears on the cover … along with teammate Ken Sapper … as they work on the rear-end housing from Rusty Wallace's Penske Racing South Ford. We get preseason stories on Rusty and Jimmy Spencer, as well as features on Ned Jarrett and a throwback to Darrell Waltrip's win in the 1989 Daytona 500. Andy Graves doesn't exactly go all out in his photo bio, and "Pappy" Tom Higgins gets a NASCAR-related fact wrong in writing about astronauts. THEN in the second installment of our interview, Shawn Parker talks about protecting his team's turf on pit road, which led to maybe … just maybe … a scuffle or two with members of OTHER teams. He talks about the wholesale crew changes that were made at the end of every season in and around the Mooresville race shops. He then turns his attention to meeting Tara Howell, her critical health issues and the subsequent heart transplant she endured and … best of all … the adoption of their son, Jagger. FINALLY … we'll be joined by Xfinity Series driver Joey Gase to talk about HIS passion for getting the word out about organ and tissue donation. His high school is known for having one of the best programs in the nation and producing more NCAA and NFL players than any other high school. Needless to say, there were no “off” days for Jimmy Spencer at Glades Central in Florida, which was fine because Jimmy knew he wanted to play in the NFL since he was 7. He had his choices of colleges and was being looked at as simply an athlete. He played quarterback at Glades Central, but his speed caught the eye of scouts. Jimmy opted for the University of Florida and skipped his senior season to enter the NFL Draft. The Washington Redskins took Jimmy in the 8th round and he spent his rookie season on the practice squad. The next season, he was with the Saints, where he was taught technique and thrived at defensive back. He also thrived at having too much fun and when he was given a chance to re-sign in the Big Easy, he credits God for showing him a different path. He took an offer with the Bengals instead. After Cincinnati, he went to the Chargers, then finished his career with the Broncos for three years, including the final year serving as a player/coach, something that hadn't been done since 1972. These days he's a husband and dad to four and coaches one of his sons at Cherry Creek High School.

We did something this week we sometimes do with our interviews … when there's a particularly powerful portion that comes later in the interview, we'll go with that part first if the situation warrants. There's no other way to put this, but Danny Culler was spotting for Dale Earnhardt during the 2001 Daytona 500. That's powerful enough, but Danny quit that gig just two days before and was only lured back by an apology the morning of that fateful event. Danny then serves as Kevin Harvick's spotter and pilot for the rest of the season, doing double duty at both the Winston Cup and Busch Series levels right alongside the rookie driver. And … we get some bonus Harry Gant stories. In our second segment, hosts Rick Houston and Steve Waid very carefully dissect the July 26, 2001 issue of Winston Cup Scene. Dale Jarrett gets into Robert Yates Racing teammate Ricky Rudd while racing for the lead in the late going at New Hamsphire. DJ wins, but Ricky's crew chief Michael McSwain is NOT happy about it. Jerry Nadeau is ticked off at Jimmy Spencer … maybe we should come up with a template to use in these cases to save time … BLANK DRIVER is ticked off at Jimmy Spencer. Kyle Petty returns to New Hampshire for the first time since his son's accident there the year before. Kevin Harvick guts out a Busch Series win at Gateway on a brutally hot night, then hops on a plane for New Hampshire, where he finishes ninth, less than twelve hours or so after the conclusion of the previous night's event halfway across the country. Deb Williams pounds out FOUR safety-related feature stories … and finally, we've got ducks … and plenty of them … in this week's issue. We talk about a little bit of everything in the second installment of our interview with Jimmy Spencer, from what winning at Myrtle Beach meant to Dick Moroso, to getting back up to speed at the Cup level with Travis Carter, Bobby Allison and Junior Johnson. Jimmy won his first couple of Cup races with Junior, but not without a little bit of controversy. Jimmy also talks about Hut Stricklin, not-so-great runs with Travis Carter (again) and Chip Ganassi and the verbal barrages he unleashed at both Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 2001. In our second segment, hosts Rick Houston and Steve Waid dig through the July 7, 1994 issue of Winston Cup Scene, which featured coverage of Jimmy's first career Winston Cup victory at Daytona, and that GREAT late-race battle with Ernie Irvan. After the race, Ernie sounded like he was maybe, sorta, kinda wondering what was going on with Jimmy's car. Tucked between Lake Okeechobee and Florida’s vast Everglades, the towns of Pahokee and Belle Glade are known as “Muck City” because of the dark soil that fuels one of the largest sugarcane crops on the planet. Muck City is home to one of the greatest rivalries in football – between Pahokee and Glades Central High Schools. These two powerhouses produce more professional football players per capita than anywhere else, including NFL stars Anquan Boldin, Santonio Holmes, Andre Waters, Rickey Jackson, Fred Taylor, Jimmy Spencer and Jessie Hester. Filmed at both schools in 2019, CuriosityStream’s first original docu-series 4th and Forever: Muck City documents the emotional roller coaster behind this ongoing rivalry – from the hopeful days of training camp to the high stakes of the annual “Muck Bowl,” one of the most intense match-ups in high school sports. The eight-part series takes viewers beyond the gridiron, presenting an inspiring portrait of an American community united in its goal to help their youth succeed despite daunting challenges. Inspired by faith, family and football, DJ Boldin, a Pahokee alumnus and brother of NFL star Anquan Boldin, uses his life experiences and personal beliefs to coach his beloved Blue Devils of Pahokee. Before returning to Pahokee, Boldin was an Offensive Assistant in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers and played for the Detroit Lions and in the Canadian Football League. Coach Boldin can discuss the new series, why this region has become famous for creating NFL stars, and his community’s commitment to help young people achieve a better life.

Inside Victory Lane - The Daytona 500 Podcast

The 2000 Daytona 500, the 42nd running of the event, was held February 20 at Daytona International Speedway, in Daytona Beach, Florida as the first race of both the 2000 NASCAR Winson Cup season and the 2000s decade. Dale Jarrett, the polesitter, led the most laps and won the race for the third time, after winning in 1993 and 1996. This was (to date) the last Daytona 500 to be televised by CBS and thus the last 500 broadcast for Buddy Baker and Ned Jarrett. Dave Marcis failed to qualify for the first time since 1968. The average green flag run for the race was confirmed by NASCAR officials as 29 laps. 12% of the event was held under a caution flag, mostly for oil, debris, and accidents. The green flag waved at 12:15 pm as pole-sitter Dale Jarrett led the field to the start of the race. However, he did not lead until lap 5 since he lost the first lap to outside polesitter Ricky Rudd. Mike Skinner took the lead away from Rudd on lap 2 and led two more. Bill Elliott briefly took the lead on lap 34, and then Jarrett regained it just before the first caution came out due to oil on a section of the track. The next green flag period lasted nearly 100 laps, in which Mark Martin took the lead and remained there for 65 laps. The second caution (also for oil) came on lap 134 and the third one came out on lap 157. During the latter caution, Johnny Benson, Jr. passed Martin for the lead as the lead-lap cars raced back to the yellow flag. Benson, Jr. led the next 39 laps, which included yet another caution on lap 170, once again for oil. On lap 192, several drivers, including Michael Waltrip, Elliott Sadler, and John Andretti, were involved in a crash right at the start-finish line. The race restarted with four laps to go, and Benson, Jr. looked as if he might capture his first cup series win in the biggest event of the season when the Fords of Jarrett and Jeff Burton ganged up on and passed him entering turn 3. One lap before the white flag was scheduled, Jimmy Spencer hit the front stretch wall, which allowed the final lap to be run under caution, securing a third Daytona 500 win for Jarrett, making him the fourth driver to win three or more Daytona 500s.
