In this essay, Jon Burke describes Qalang Smangus, an aboriginal village in Taiwan which has been collectively organized. Jon makes a case for identifying it as an intentional Christian anarcho-collectivist community, assesses its success, and identifies its internal and exernal challenges. Jon is a former lecturer in photography and media studies at Ming Chuan University in Taiwan, and is currently a technical writer in Melbourne, Australia. Join me today for a discussion with Walt Settlemyre the Host of The Distinguished Savage Podcast. Walt Settlemyre is a US Army veteran serving with the 25th ID for the majority of his 4 years active duty. After the Army he followed several career paths along with higher education but was always missing something meaningful!   Looking for purpose he initially found Fire Service and ultimately Emergency Medical Services as a Paramedic. With 30 years now as a Paramedic in 911 systems the vast majority of that time has been spent in EMS Special Operations as both a Tactical Medic and Rescue Medic. Until recently the last 20 years was focused more on the Rescue side of the house including swift water, and swift water boat operations, rope rescue, high angle, structural collapse, trench rescue, infectious disease response, and Search and Rescue.   After an injury made it difficult to remain in Special Operations and moving in to Field Operations on a regular ambulance he then focused both on teaching Tactical and Austere Med Courses to civilians and on revamping the defensive tactics program for his department, Austin Travis Co EMS. The program he helped build now consists of elements from different defensive tactics methodologies that flow well together. Situational awareness and deescalation, Tony Blauers Spear, Gracie Survival Tactics, Jon Burke's P4 program, and elements of the Shivworks Collective's Managing Unknown Contacts as well as fighting in an enclosed and entangled environment as in the back of an ambulance, where a majority of assaults on EMS personnel occur.   Two years ago he also started a podcast, The Distinguished Savage in an effort to talk to other like minded individuals on self defense, EDC, critical thinking skills, along with people's story. I'm joined today by my Global PMI colleagues Michael Scherer and , Jon Burke and we are listening to Jon as he walks us through his personal and somewhat accidental journey into M&A integration.Jon's story like many of us starts with his corporate career in an organisation that was making multiple acquisitions. Somewhat disillusioned by the limited communication, Jon stepped in and proposed a communication strategy that could help 'sell' the acquisition both internally to employees but also externally. Before too long, Jon was being asked to help finance quantify some of the likely benefits and regularly being in the wrong place at the right time, he found himself bit by bit getting more and more involved in the acquisition integration process.There are several lessons from Jon's story, but the one fact that stands out is that Jon's M&A experience is built on solid corporate experience, meaning he's not afraid to roll his sleeves up and get involved in making things happen.

On this episode I sat down with owners and founders of Red Coyote Running. Jon & Burke met working for one of the nations largest running stores. Both with a passion for running and had ran in college they naturally gravitated to the sport and the industry surrounding it. Living in sunny California and managing a store there seemed like the life. What would happen over the next few years would have them coming back to Burke's hometown to set up their own store. A great story and one that forced them into building the running culture here in town because there wasn't one. OKC was one of the unhealthiest cities at the time and well, nobody ran or walked anywhere. Come to present day and they have two awesome stores, a great running culture and a some of the best employees you'll find. They are knowledgeable, kind and genuinely love running. I know, there's people out there that love to run. I didn't think I was one of them, but having recently signed up for my first ultra marathon. I am now a runner. Enjoy this episode.
