Here is some of what you will hear in our conversation:[4:15] People need to win more people are people that are struggling to get their ideas to get their passion, they give up on themselves too easily, because maybe they haven't had a good upbringing.[4:50] I say vulnerability is the new currency. And I keep repeating that over and over because vulnerable, being vulnerable and showing up to be courageous about what you haven't accomplished or What you're struggling with, lets other people know that they're not on an island by themselves.[13:25] And I'm continuing to be flawed, nobody's perfect. We're always going to evolve and try to be better.[15:42] But if I told you to switch that word, and say, instead of saying, I'm nervous, going to speak on that stage, say, I'm energized to go and speak on that stage, you feel it completely different. Your physiology changes, your chest changes, your breathing changes, you feel completely different just by saying, I'm energized to ask this question, not, I'm nervous, too.[18:28] And since we did launch with the best that we could do with what we had, we then ended up getting phone calls, getting messages, and ultimately winning an Emmy.[23:30] That's nobody wants to talk about this part of the process.Like, we just had a killer show that changed lives. And I'm packing up the U haul truck and now driving that doggone hoopty from New York to Baltimore, and then taking the stuff out.[30:13] And when you have the big picture, and you can reverse engineer it when you can see the outcome that you're trying to get next three, three months, six months, a year, three years when you can see that outcome. When you only vision that outcome, you get overwhelmed. And that's why some of so many of you quit.[36:23] And I remember seeing that eviction notice and just wondering like, you know, what is that and having him explained to me what that kind of is and what it meant. But then also to see his mindset is that he still was trying to push on the dream at the same time. And as a kid, I never felt poor. Because the parents do a great job of making you feel like you don't know what's going on in their world.[43:47] And I just remember sitting in a parking lot crying by myself, because I thought I let my family down because I was the one that came up with this genius idea that we can make this dream happen. And so as a black man, and as a father, and as a husband, I felt like, holy crap. Is this what my dad was feeling.[45:19] I'm flat broke no money and I'm on the Today Show son.How crazy how what's the juxtaposition of Oh, Mario's made it? He's on today's show looking at Baltimore boy go. Nah, man, my godmother paid for my daggone train ticket. Today's show luckily put me up in a hotel that night.[49:40] You're never gonna be fully ready to do anything. You just have to do it.[51:14] And so really, the reason why it wasn't like she (my wife) really supported my vision is because truth be told, I think she had more of the vision of what she saw me as the and this isn't like me trying to be Oprah. It was just like what the barometer was, for at the time, she saw me as the Oprah replacement for a younger generation.[100:11] I don't want to be the dot. Oh, wow. Like I want my impact to be big enough that it was justifiable for me to be the foreword of your book![103:05] And I just really recognized that there was a fourth way to generate some income. And that was based off of sponsorships, and sponsorships. While you still have responsibilities to the sponsor. That's it. I got responsibilities to one sponsor, who by the way, it's not actually anyone's individual money. It's the company's money.[114:58] I say this quote, "When something is important enough, do it even when all the odds are against you."

A stock exchange might not seem like the most likely place to publish fresh social content and connect with younger generations. But then again, Nasdaq has always been ahead of its time. Nasdaq was the first electronic stock market and dates back to the 1970s. Although most people have probably heard of the company, many of them couldn't actually tell you what Nasdaq does. That's where Chief Digital Officer Josh Machiz comes in. His job is to connect Nasdaq with a younger audience and tell the story of what Nasdaq actually does. With a fresh strategy and relevant content, he's connecting with a new audience and growing the company's brand and experience. When Machiz joined the Nasdaq PR team in 2013, the company wasn't doing much—if anything—with digital marketing and social media. But because Nasdaq is focused on innovation and technology, Machiz knew the company had to be able to showcase the stock market of the future digitally. A focused effort on growing social content has increased Nasdag's followers from 20,000 to more than 3 million in just five years. Part of the way Nasdaq is gaining traction is by focusing on the innovators who are changing tomorrow. Companies come to Nasdaq to go public on the stock exchange. As Machiz says, the company is a dream factory where dreams come true. Many of the recent companies to go public resonate with entrepreneurs at different stages of building their companies. Nasdaq's social content is aimed largely towards younger entrepreneurs and Millennials. These people likely aren't the ones who will be considering taking their companies public any time soon, but it's never too early to build a loyal audience. Younger people are very influential to older people. As today's entrepreneurs and founders get even younger, it's important to get in early with a consumer audience and build the next cohort of potential customers. Social content is huge for attracting a younger audience and showcasing the Nasdaq brand of innovation. One of the hallmarks of Nasdaq's efforts is the “Never Settle Show”, a weekly talk show in front of a live studio audience that's live streamed around the world. The show is regularly recognized for its interactive nature and even won a New York Emmy. The “Never Settle Show” covers the entrepreneurial hustle and is all about removing boundaries to entrepreneurship and making it accessible to everyone. Aside from the talk show, Nasdaq also has other podcasts and shows to showcase its brand and connect with a new wave of entrepreneurs. Live shows are popular at Nasdaq, though that hasn't always been the case. Aside from the “Never Settle Show”, Nasdaq has also partnered with CNBC to broadcast “Squawk Box” and “Fast Money” every morning and evening from its innovative market site. Machiz hopes to increase partnerships in the future with online publications and new media outlets to expand Nasdaq's audience. Mario had made it. He and his wife just closed a $186,000 deal with AOL. This was their big break. They were driving from Baltimore to Dulles, VA to a signing party - a champagne-filled celebration of the great work they've put forth and the bright road ahead. That's when they got the call. There was a new Director at AOL. All deals were being paused. No champagne, no party. A few weeks later, the deal was off. Mario and his wife quit their jobs to make this dream happen. With a 5-year-old son, they cashed in their 401(k), built up credit card debt and found themselves flat broke. Then the 2008 recession hit. Rock bottom. His mother-in-law was buying his family's groceries. He went to the Coinstar just to get money for gas. On one particular day, he went to “go get a coffee.” He sat in the Starbucks parking lot and never got out of his car. Instead, he cried. And cried. Rock bottom x 2. His dream in 2007 was to host a nationally televised talk show. So how did he win an Emmy this year for his talk show “The Never Settle Show”? Clear Vision Mario broke down exactly what he wanted to achieve in his plan and broke that down into small, achievable steps along the way. He turned his annual goals into monthly, weekly and daily goals and got to work. Support System He and his wife had a system. If one of them was “down”, the other had to be “up.” If they were both negative, there would be no chance of winning. Put In The Work Mario had an obsession and put in the work. His niche in the market was making complicated technology easy to understand for the “average Joe.” This earned him serious airtime on national television. Not as a host, but as a contributor. Feedback & Gatekeepers When Mario built enough credibility with the national audience, he pitched his idea to all of the major networks - an interactive talk show. One where the audience gets to choose the topics, have a live vote on the direction of the show and each show is wildly different from the last. When no major network bit on his idea, Mario came to the realization that these people should not and could not hold his destiny in their hands. They were merely gatekeepers. Using his knowledge of technology, he funded the show and got it aired on Facebook Live. So here he is. 5 days before our conversation, Mario was on stage holding his Emmy proudly. His speech? “Don't let anyone hold the destiny of your dreams.” You control your life. If you have a dream, it's up to you (and your team) to make it happen. There are also some major players in China’s livestream industry that are under investigation, including two that received a combined one billion dollars in funding. Areas being investigated include content that promotes “violence, pornography, gambling, superstition, and other values harmful to public morality.” Beyonce racked up the highest YouTube livestream viewership of any performance in Coachella’s history. She had 458,000 simultaneous live viewers during her Saturday set. She’s been invited to perform for 4 heads of state and in some of the most prestigious venues in the world. Azania won first prize in a French TV competition similar to American Idol. I have a confession to make. I was SUPER hesitant to jump into live streaming. For a few reasons. The first reason was that I would have to "get ready", as in, do my hair & makeup every day (O.K., technically I don't have to do that. I get that most people really don't care if what you look like if the content is good, but this was my hang up). Another reason was that I didn't want to just jump on at talk at people. I wanted to have a strategy, plan it a bit, and make sure I had some time to promote the live stream. When I did jump in I got results INSTANTLY. I was floored by the engagement, the number of people that showed up (more than normally show up for a webinar), and the traffic to my live stream post after the event (I pull the videos into my site with Simple Social Press and write a post along with the video. The bonus with using Simple Social Press is that it also pulls the Facebook comments into the site as blog comments, which is awesome). I knew I wanted to have someone on the show to talk about live streaming and after seeing Ross Brand everywhere, I knew I wanted to connect with him.
