TW: contains references to racist abuse and racially-aggravated violence. This is probably one of my favourite episodes of all time, and I don't say that lightly. The former championship wheelchair basketball star turned TV presenter, Ade Adepitan, came into the How To Fail studio with an open heart and a moving story to tell. He blew us all away. Ade talks about growing up working-class, Black and disabled and how the intersection of these left him feeling he had to prove himself twice as much. He talks about letting his parents down and a family estrangement that lasted 10 years. We chat about the impact of leaving Nigeria, aged three, and how that has continued to shape his outlook on life and we talk about his own self-perceived failure to protect his friend from a racist attack as a teenager - and how what happened changed all their lives. We also talk about a 2005 BBC documentary where he broke down in front of cameras while trying to climb a volcano and his fear that he had let himself and the disabled community down. AND - in a first for How To Fail -his failure to take a compliment You can catch Ade presenting Channel 4's coverage of the Paralympic Games this summer. As always, I'm desperate to hear about your failures. Every week, my guest and I choose a selection to read out and answer on our special subscription offering, Failing with Friends. Paralympian and TV presenter Ade Adepitan (now an honorary Scotsman according to Gordon!) reflects on his life and career. Particularly on his surreal experience of visiting an all-white South-African community of Orania for a documentary, and the life-affirming, outlook-changing feat of spending nearly seven hours crawling to the peak of live volcano in Nicaragua. The pair also get into the rise of extremism, the difficulties that come with navigating hostile environments, and how Ade's background in elite sport helps him find focus when his anger rises in some of these environments. Ade also touched on his love for ‘home from home' Edinburgh, the pros and cons of considering a career in politics, and the power of accepting who you are.

Ade Adepitan describes how, despite losing the use of one leg due to polio as a toddler in Nigeria, he forged a career encompassing sport, broadcasting and writing, winning many medals for wheelchair basketball, tennis and dance. Which was the biggest challenge: overcoming the racism he faced in East London in the 1970's, poverty or contemporary attitudes towards disabled people? Hosted on Acast. Adedoyin Adepitan. Or Ade to his friends and the public, was born in Lagos Nigeria. At the age of fifteen months he contracted Poliomyelitis. The effects of the virus meant that Ade was unable to use his left leg, and only had partial use of his right leg. Ade discovered wheelchair basketball when he was twelve, after being spotted by two Physiotherapists. After turning down an opportunity to study and play basketball, at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Ade decided to play basketball professionally for two years with CAI CDM Zaragoza. His dream to play for Great Britain at the Paralympics finally came true. After fifteen years, Ade was selected to compete in the Sydney 2000 Paralympics. The Sydney Paralympics got good media coverage; this helped to boost Ade's Profile amongst the British public. After starring in a documentary called "hoop dreams" for a cable channel, and also featuring in the world famous PlayStation double life advert, as well as presenting a wildlife show on national TV. Ade Adepitan became a familiar face in the UK with his trademark cheeky grin and flowing dreadlocks. Ade continued to represent Great Britain, for five more years after Sydney. In that time he won a bronze, and a silver medal, at the 2002 and 2005 European championships. He also captained his country to a silver medal, at the 2002 World championships in Kitakyushu Japan. In 2004 Ade Adepitan achieved his lifelong ambition, winning a medal at the Athens Paralympics.
The power of sticking with something and refusing to give up - with TV presenter and wheelchair basketball star Ade Adepitan. Ade contracted polio when he was just 15 months old while living in Nigeria – which prompted his parents to move to the UK to give him a better chance of not just thriving but even surviving. It was a huge sacrifice by his family – and his parents in particular endured a torrid time when they moved to London but they instilled in Ade a resilience and persistence that has served him well. Ade struggled to accept his disability but sport and his wheelchair changed the way he felt – and he began to flourish. In this episode Ade talks about persisting despite knockbacks as he attempted to make the British team, he talks about preparing for opportunities so when they arrive - as they surely will - you’ll be ready and why pushing and challenging yourself is crucial so you’re not left looking back thinking ‘if only’.
Ade Adepitan grew up in East London, wearing callipers on his legs as a result of childhood polio - and feeling like adventures were things that happened to other people. But then a chance encounter with a wheelchair basketball team turned all of that upside down. The Paralympic medallist and broadcaster talks Greg Dickinson through a handful of his most vivid travel memories - including a hair-raising expedition up the side of a live volcano in Central America, a meeting with a one-eyed boxing champion in Kinshasa, and a plot to kidnap him that didn’t quite go to plan. Cyborg Cat and the Night Spider. Written By: Ade Adepitan Narrated By: Ade Adepitan An amazing adventure full of fun and friendship written and narrated by inspirational Paralympian wheelchair basketball star Ade Adepitan. Super cyborg skills, cat-like reflexes ... you've never seen a superhero who rolls like this! Ade loves playing football and he's amazing in goal, despite the heavy metal caliper he has to wear on his leg. He can save any ball that's sent his way, from any direction, so his friends have nicknamed him the Cyborg Cat.
