Typical market stats are going to be misleading, so in order to know what's really happening we need to pay attention to; Average showings per listing Average new listings per day New expireds per day New price reductions per day 30 year fixed mortgage rate Pendings Knowing these things will prove you as an expert in your market and also back up your claim that things are changing. The agents who thrive through a softer market maintain and even increase their production know they have to increase their daily lead generation efforts. If you want to maintain the same level of business as the first half of the year, you need to increase your contacts by 15 - 20% a day. Have a designated day each week for price reductions. Before this market, we didn't need a communication plan for price reductions because homes were selling very easily. Now sellers are going to wonder why after a few days, they don't have any showings or offers. Now we have to set aside time to give them the necessary market updates.

This episode of the Early Accountability Podcast contains the conclusion of Kimi and Tyran’s conversation in which they are going through the Resolutions to Results framework with Tyran’s goals for the next 90 days. We have reached the final stage of the framework: activation and creating a plan. Considering that Tyran’s achievement style is the Juggler, it is even more important that he think through and plan out his next steps towards achieving each of these goals. Regarding his goal of launching a new product for Life Behind the Beard, Kimi and Tyran determined that he can establish which product they are going to launch as well as make some decisions about marketing and potential pre-sales within the next 2 weeks. Within the next 4 weeks, Tyran can have labelling the products taken care of and he will have put some more thought into whether it is worth it to continue to use the marketing agency they have hired. Kimi recommended that Tyran and Gary leverage their social media to increase awareness and build buzz surrounding the launch, perhaps using a virtual assistant to help with these logistics. Tyran’s second goal was to increase the company’s sales and revenue consistently. Kimi’s advice was to work towards a 33% increase, bringing up the lower threshold of their monthly sales from $3,000 per month to $4,000 per month. This would be another good place to utilize a virtual assistant who could help by pulling reports, reviewing analytics, and taking notes during Tyran and Gary’s weekly strategy meetings. Finally, Tyran wants to increase his podcast production frequency. Kimi suggested that he work to get ahead on his evergreen content that can be scheduled and posted in future months which would free up some mental capacity to record episodes related to current events as needed. She also pointed out that this would be another good opportunity for a virtual assistant, helping out with scheduling episodes, posting episodes, and scheduling podcast guests. It could also help to build up his personal brand through live videos on social media which would increase his face time with his podcast audience. Tyran will come back on the show early next year to report back on his results! “We started in 1970 with people like Jack Shingleton and Patrick Scheetz,” says Gardner. “They saw that they could add information and understanding to the broader community in college recruiting. The survey has continued to grow and evolve.”Gardner says the pandemic is having a dramatic impact on the college labor market.“It's changing how companies recruit. The virus makes it very difficult for companies to decide on what their hiring needs are. There's a group of employers that have no choice but to hire, and they're hiring. Their businesses are going to go on whether we have a virus or not. Some sectors seem to be weathering this better. Then we have sectors that are completely being crushed by the virus.”Recruiting on campus is different now. And he explains why associate degrees are faring better. He says some companies of all sizes are hiring.“Twenty five percent of employers that typically would be on campuses are riding this out. They're not going to hire this year, or they're waiting until January, February, maybe even March before they decide if they're going to hire anyone. About 42 percent say they are going to lower their hiring, which is a significant number. We haven't seen that since we started coming out of the recession in 2008. Another 30-some percent that are increasing hiring are balancing that out. “So there's a lot of uncertainty that makes these numbers kind of mucky. “Around the country, employers are hiring community college students, particularly those coming out of applied technologies like computer science, IT, and health technicians. It's kind of sad that a lot of the community colleges have taken big enrollment hits at a time when there's probably going to be a demand for those students, depending on the regional economic activities around those community colleges. If there's any bad news in here, it's for MBAs. The market is down quite a bit. It's typical in an economic recession to see MBAs go in a swoon like that. It's a questionable investment if you don't have a lot of work experience to justify that MBA at this time. “Students have to be prepared and they have to be ready and they have to be persistent. The job market is going to open and unfold in dramatically different ways over the next nine months. It could go along very well for a while and then all of a sudden shut down. Students have to be prepared. They can't get discouraged.Employers are active out there. And the students have to be prepared, too, because there's a lot of labor out there that's now displaced, and that it makes it easier for employers to find experienced laborers. They don't have to rely on new college labor as much. So, just to sit there and wait for employers to come to you is not going to work this year. In fact, even the recruiting strategies aren't even suited to that anymore.”Gardner talks about the new blend of in-person and virtual strategies for recruiting. The use of digital platforms in recruiting isn't new, but its use is increasing. Employers say there are pros and cons to virtual recruiting.“Employers and students still like to engage with each other face to face in person. But they know virtual interactions will continue to increase.“Students have to understand that the pandemic will change how they go about looking for work. It's never been truly a passive activity. Students who are more proactive tend to do better and faster. It's certainly going to be much more proactive on the student's part to reach out and figure out how to use these technologies and how to use the information that they can glean from, say Handshake at Michigan State or Simplicity at their campus, to identify employers and do their research and then make the contacts and be ready and prepared to talk to them in ways that they haven't before. And this is not going to go away the minute the virus is over and everybody's going to happily come back to campus. This is accelerated adoption of technologies that we predicted would happen, but maybe on this soon. Now I think we're going to see it accelerate and happen much faster.”About half the companies surveyed expect most work to stay virtual at home. And many assignments will be virtual.“It could be that new hires will come in and spend a couple weeks at a facility. They'll get an assignment that will have them work remotely, and then when they finish that they may come back in and work with the team in-person for six months on a project and then rotate out back out to more remote work. “So what it really does now is combines a whole bunch of divergent skills in a new package, in a new way. You've got to be able to work effectively virtually. You have to prioritize your time. You have to prioritize your work assignments because working virtually, it's really hard to all of a sudden pick up something new that just happens to come into the office or something that has to be handled right away. Employers find that doesn't work very well virtually.“Overlying everything are broad power skills that are more grounded in culture and values and attitudes and behaviors that emerge out of how you approach work, how you work effectively with others, and how you do all that is going to still be critically important. And employers acknowledge that. I think that's going to be their biggest challenge in recruiting as we see more and more students having to do remote work as part of their internship. You lose the opportunity to build relationships and instill the organizational culture.“We're in this flux period of how we're going to balance this remote work, which more and more of us are going to do. Everybody likes to be in an office and see people every once in a while. I think you're going to see a much more rotational kind of schedule. “It's about attitude. It's about being flexible and adaptable. A lot of students may have anticipated that they were going to do certain kind of jobs when they graduate. It may not be possible for them to do that, and so employers are encouraging them to be flexible and open minded about what the opportunities are. These jobs may not be what exactly they wanted, but they may open paths to where they want to go. “When it gets down to it, it's a mantra used much during the recessions in 2000 and gain in early 2008. You have to plan. You've got to start early and be prepared. That means you've got to do your research. You've got to think about how you're going to interview differently. You have to persist. That may not be easy. If you're in computer science, you're probably going to have a lot more opportunities than others. Still, every student has to plan for this. It's plan, prepare, and persist. Welcome to Season Two of the Recruitment Leadership podcast! In this season, we're talking all things finance for recruitment, with Nick Russell of Sonovate. As the Commercial Sales Manager of one of the UK's fastest growing FinTech companies, Nick provides a wealth of knowledge on the often tricky topic of finance and investment. A three-part how-to series, there's something for every recruitment in this series. This episode is geared at more substantial recruitment businesses who may be a little bit further along their development curve - typically more than 50 heads. If you're a director or owner who may have a business event in their sights such as an exit, an MBO or trade sale, for example, this episode will be essential listening for you. 01:54 - A lot of large recruitment businesses are wildly non-compliant and don't realise. A lot of the problems stem from the contractor workforce or temporary workforce - but not exclusively. It can be a big issue once you get involved in due diligence but also has an impact on financing. What problems have you (Nick) come across with larger businesses when you get involved in the financing discussion? 04:53 - One company I worked with last year assumed there were no problems with their compliance, as their household-name client has not raised any questions. I identified there was an issue with their terms that may have prevented them from getting paid if there was a dispute. Although embarrassing, they admitted their mistake to the client and put things right. A less scrupulous client could have been willing to take advantage of that situation - have you (Nick) had anything like that happen? 09:22 - From a finance perspective, what do it do you think, Nick, that different types of buyers look for when they acquire a recruitment business? 10:55 - What number is good for payment terms? 11:43 - What classes as a lot of credit notes, in percentage terms? 14:00 - To what extent do funding organisations like Sonovate actually make the assessment of how a management team perform and how financially astute they are? 17:45 - Taking the perm invoicing and finance scenario, you (Nick) said people will do anything between 60 and 90% - what are the factors that influence that? 22:28 - What's your advice to recruitment business owners about protecting themselves from fraud? 29:44 - As the possibility of a sale or investment becomes more real, business owners want to look at swapping their financing arrangements. Today we're talking about how to Plan, Prepare and Refuse to Give Up with podcast host, branding expert, and author Henry Kaminski, Jr. Henry is the founder of Unique Designz, a full-service design, branding and digital marketing agency dedicated to helping authority brands; coaches, consultants, influencers, speakers and authors to scale their expertise and personal brands into profitable business models. Henry started twelve years ago as a freelance graphic designer, eventually growing his business into a mature, boutique brand development agency. His average client is typically worth $50-100K over a calendar year. But Henry remembers not so long ago when he was working for Fiverr. As sales reps, we know how it feels to want to get to the top as quickly as possible. We think it will be easy but then it is not long before we hit the hiccups. PLAN AND PREPARE Henry says it all comes down to preparation. He credits himself with once being the worst salesman on the planet. These days, Henry follows a very specific, tried and true script that he practices on a weekly basis. He does not deviate from that script and, as such, he is closing more and more sales. People perceive our value based on the questions we ask so planning ahead of time what to say is key. As Henry says “asking stupid questions only gets you stupid answers.” You will be perceived as an amateur. As a brand strategist and brand developer, Henry wants to position his clients to become subject matter experts. He wants people to be on the edge of their seats whenever one of his clients is speaking. It is all about positioning and that comes with preparation. Do your research on your client. Know as much about them before you make the call. This is a lesson Henry learned the hard way. You have to know the answers to the questions but you will want to challenge the person that you are speaking to. There is no value in telling the client what they already know. Let your client know that you may ask them some tough questions – questions they maybe haven't about thought before. Be sure they understand that your intent is not to pry but to get to the root of the issues in order to be the most helpful. BE INTENTIONAL Henry became intentional with his desire to start his own business after Hurricane Sandy blew through New Jersey and wiped out two of his biggest clients. Henry tried to continue living the lifestyle to which he had become accustomed but with a revenue loss of a quarter of a million dollars, it just wasn't possible. At the same time, Fiverr entered the design world and disrupted the entire industry. Henry couldn't beat them so he joined them. But it wasn't a sustainable position. He remembers a $120 paycheck for over 90 hours of work and he remembers earning $5 for six hours of revisions on a business card. And he remembers telling his wife that they needed to make a change. She got out the laptop and said, “Let's get to work.” Henry started working with a mentor, Russell Brunson. He couldn't afford to pay for the coaching program but he couldn't afford not to, either. So he maxed out his credit card and got on the phone with Russell. At the end of the one-hour call, they were both crying hysterically as Henry was hired on the spot to help with Russell's first book launch. That gave Henry the confidence boost he needed. It was the biggest sale he ever made and it led to another job with Russell a few months later. More importantly, Henry received the most important tidbit of insight from Russell. Despite all his fancy websites and great designs, Henry himself was nowhere to be found on any of it. His big personality was hiding behind the logo. That has all changed now and Henry doesn't regret it for a minute. He has found his lane. Content creation and working one-on-one with the clients is where he wants to stay. GET SEEN As a podcast host, myself, I can relate. People came to my webpage and listened to my podcast, but if they wanted to see me, they couldn't. It was all stock photographs. I had to put myself out there. I had to make myself available for my audience. We shouldn't diminish ourselves. We need to put ourselves first and refuse to give up. I used to be intimidated and afraid that maybe I didn't look good on camera or that seeing my brand was better than seeing the real me. Rather, your personal brand is just an offset of your business. If you are shy and timid, it will show in your messaging. Don't be afraid of yourself. Even the bigger brands, according to Henry, are coming out of their shells. The only difference between you and everybody else is you! You have to invest in your personal brand. It's critical. REFUSE TO GIVE UP Henry credits his unwillingness to give up to his parents who tried for 16 years to become pregnant with Henry. His Mom would call him her ‘miracle baby.' Henry believes that hearing that story while growing up – that his parents refused to give up for over 16 years – is what fuels his drive now. There are so many times when we try something once or twice and quit when it doesn't go our way. His parent relentlessly pursued their goal for 16 years. If you are feeling uncertain or hesitant when looking forward because of past difficulties, Henry recommends you remember that it is all a numbers game. He once went three months without one single sale. He kept looking back and beating himself up over what he might have done differently. His mentor reminded him that a rearview window is smaller than a windshield for a reason – because you are not going that way. Any setback is temporary. It's like a storm passing through town. It might be a struggle but it will pass.
