Best-selling author Steven Rowley is quoted as saying: “There are times when Los Angeles is the most magical city on Earth. When the Santa Ana winds sweep through and the air is warm and so, so clear. When the jacaranda trees bloom in the most brilliant lilac violet. When the ocean sparkles on a warm February day and you're pushing fine grains of sand through your bare toes while the rest of the country is hunkered down under blankets slurping soup.” Join CivitasLA in this mini-episode as we are reminded by previous guests (including Mayor Joy Belmonte, Christian Huebel, Kacy Keys, Ayahlushim Getachew, Tunua Thrash-Ntuk, Kevin Demoff, Leticia Rhi Buckley, Josefina Lopez, Alfred Fraijo Jr., Arturo Sneider, Dani Klein Modisett, LeAnn Jones, Leslie Jones, Lia Jones, Rev. The Economist magazine, in a holiday special from December 2021, entitled “The Pleasures of The Table” – discussing how restaurants came to be and how the pandemic may change them – noted: “Being deprived of restaurants has made people realize how much they value them. Eating out fulfills needs which seem fundamental to human nature. People need to date, to seal deals and to peer at their fellow humans. At a good restaurant you can travel without traveling, or simply feel coddled.” Are you ready to be “coddled?” Join CivitasLA for this mini-episode as we hear from previous guests (including Kacy Keys, Ayahlushim Getachew, Tunua Thrash-Ntuk, Leticia Rhi Buckley, Josefina Lopez, Arturo Sneider, Dani Klein Modisett, Lia Jones, Leslie Jones, LeAnn Jones, Rev. It's been said, by Jorge N. Neal, co-curator and museum educator at the Boyle Heights Museum, that “all roads lead to Boyle Heights, it's a place of intersection.” Boyle Heights, part of the original Spanish land grant that established the city of Los Angeles in 1781, covering roughly 6.5 square miles located 3 miles east of Downtown, is one of LA's oldest and most historically significant communities in the region. Historically, it's been home to generations of immigrants (being called the Ellis Island of the West), serving as home to some of the largest populations of Japanese and Jewish residents in Southern California. As CivitasLA celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month 2022, we're joined by Josefina Lopez, Founding Artistic Director of Casa 0101 Theater and screenwriter, and Alfred Fraijo Jr., attorney and community leader --- both raised in Boyle Heights and actively engaged in the civic and business life of the community -- for “Community Spotlight: Boyle Heights” as we explore this unique community; consider its rich history, its place at the center of the Latino experience in LA and central role in Chicano culture and social justice movements. Boyle Heights may be divided up by L.A. freeways and thoroughfares, but its people have a remarkable record of maintaining solidarity across racial and ethnic lines. What explains the ability of Boyle Heights residents to stick together while constantly integrating immigrants and incorporating newcomers? How has Boyle Heights kept its distinctive identity in the face of social upheaval, political transformation, and waves of gentrification? And what can a more diverse America, and a more globalized world, learn from the history of this magical and multiracial neighborhood in the center of Los Angeles? Josefina Lopez, author of “Real Women Have Curves” and Founding Artistic Director of CASA 0101 Theater in Boyle Heights, joined USC professor of American Studies, ethnicity, and history George J. Sanchez, author of “Boyle Heights: How a Los Angeles Neighborhood Became the Future of American Democracy,” at Zócalo to examine whether the neighborhood that birthed him might point the way to a better future for the United States. Wake Up Hollywood

Armond Kinard, born in Los Angeles, is an actor, writer and poet. He has been steadily working his way to artistic success since 2007, although his passion for creativity goes back to childhood. His first passion was acting, but that was immediately followed by writing during the first 12 years of his life. By 1996, at age 20, another interest spawned - his love of poetry. Hip hop and/or Rap music heavily influenced this new passion. While attending Los Angeles Trade Technical Community College, he began writing poetry. It was during this time that he wrote notes for many of his present film ideas. He'll always claim 1996 as the best year of his adult life due to all of this creativity firing up. In 1999, Armond's stride experienced a detour, after being hired at Power 106.FM, a popular hip hop radio station in Los Angeles. It was this radio station that triggered his love of the music, especially in the 90's. He worked in the promotions department until January of 2007. After leaving Power 106, he did some stand up comedy at the World Famous Comedy Store in Hollywood (his poem "Homeless Intellectuals" was created from those routines). He also co-starred in a film titled "Color of the Cross part 2 : The Resurrection", where he played "Simon" (his first speaking role). By June of 2009, Armond created a YouTube account and started using it to generate attention to his poetry and voiceover talents, with very little success. Then, thanks to motivation from his cousin Jonathan Picos and a colleague, Mike Sonksen, Armond began performing his poetry on stage for the first time (November 2010). In 2011, his poetry started to catch on in Los Angeles with performances in Hollywood, Watts, Santa Monica, Downtown L.A. and Boyle Heights. People were taking notice and enjoying his performances. In January of 2012, he performed in a major Los Angeles poetry event, "Occupy This", which led to him being cast in a theatre production, "Occupy the Heart", produced by Miguel Garcia and Josefina Lopez. He also co-wrote a short film, "And Let God Do the Rest", which finished production in March of that year. Armond was also featured in a web series titled, "Failing Upwards", produced by Matt Crabtree and Michelle Bonilla. He later created a sensual poetry series titled, "The Book of Sultry". In 2014, he would join a writers group, which would connect him to new film director, Armin Siljkovic. Together they would work on three projects from 2015 to 2017, with one of them earning Armond his first best actor nomination for a short film titled, "Hard Money". Today, he continues to work with Armin on short films and features. He plans to focus more on film writing and acting, while still maintaining his love of writing or performing poetry. His sensual poetry series "The Book of Sultry" is developing a growing international fan base on Vimeo. Links: imdb.com/name/nm2918887/ youtube.com/channel/UCIGPdDLkIDYeXujrTCtRvEw

Mexikanska gränsen – knark, kultur, död och drömmar

Kulturradion: Kosmo

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 27, 2010 41:53

Programledare Anneli Dufva Producent: Marie Liljedahl
