In this episode of Dark Overtones, Kurt seeks to explore the symbols that inspired this very podcast -- the runes and symbols embedded in Ari Aster's horror masterpiece, Midsommar. Throughout the film, Aster places runes of Elder Futhark at key points, from the barracks where the main characters sleep to the cliff from which the Harga elders leap to their deaths. It seems that these symbols may have deeper meaning in the plot of the movie and its characters. In this episode, Kurt speaks with expert rune reader Wayne Brekke, as well as one of his best friends (and tarot expert) Becca Fanali to explore that possibility. This episode also includes a special event -- an actual rune reading for one of my guests, to expand the meaning of the runes from our interpretation of Midsommar to my guest's life and history. The runes cast for this reading can be seen at this link. You can see all the Elder Futhark runes discussed in this episode here.Wayne Brekke is a Renaissance man in every sense of the word. A man of many talents, Wayne is an expert rune reader (mentored by Kaedrich Olsen), with a concerted knowledge on Elder Futhark and the interpretations of the runes within it. Wayne's rune work (and other work) can be found all over the place, including his podcast Rune Ways (available on Spotify, Apple, and anywhere you get podcasts) and his YouTube channel of the same name. Wayne is also an unapologetic decades-long RPG fan, evidenced by his fantastic website, Dungeon Crate.Rebecca Fanali is a licensed acupuncturist, expert in herbal medicine, and practitioner of different elements of witchcraft. Becca has a long history of interest in the metaphysical, leading her to perform tarot readings and nature-centered rituals and practices. Though not a fan of labels, Becca has an encyclopedic knowledge of issues related to witchcraft, with a particular interest in human connection to nature.Apologies for the few audio changes throughout the episode; they're due to changing devices. Don't worry, you don't lose any of that sweet forbidden knowledge related to Midsommar. All audio clips were taken from Midsommar itself, property of Square Peg Films, B-Reel Films, and A24 Films, all rights reserved.

Pasha takes Michael under his wing, but is he blurring ethical lines with the way he runs things? Based off the book "Backstabbing for Beginners: My Crash Course in International Diplomacy" by Michael Soussan, the A24 rocks crew discusses the movie and the early aughts when they were also idealist young lads. Send us comments, suggestions and ideas here! In this week's show we traverse the perilous Backrooms of creepy-pasta fame, using its dark mythology popularized by Kane Pixels as a case-study of the nature and power of liminality. We begin by exploring the liminal space of the backrooms as they first appeared originally in their anonymous creepy-pasta format alongside other images labeled “liminal spaces.” We discuss what liminality even means and how it can be creepy, exhilarating and a powerfully nuanced feature of creation itself. We discover, as with most inspired pieces of art, the horror of the backrooms was a reflection of real world events at the time. Aside from the mental and spiritual aspects, we put on our nerd glasses to explore how liminality functions in the world of natural, physical phenomena. We then conclude the free show by revealing where and when the backrooms photo was actually taken with some light-hearted musing about the synchronicities around this discovery. In the extended show we continue our discussion of liminality by exploring the dread abode of Catholic limbo, why dogs are inherently liminal by nature and how the mighty goddess Hecate rules over this entire domain of related ideas. Heck we even explore, in its entirety, an easily performed ritual by the late Satanic Church founder Anton Lavey designed to elevate the enjoyment of liminal spaces to its maximum degree. We discuss whether the classical minotaur of Crete was trapped in a labyrinth or a maze before exploring in detail the potent magickal ideas of ancient Egypt as they pertain to liminality specifically. Its pretty surprising how old some of these now popular ideas and motifs really are. Then, right before wrapping up we visit the Vault of the Adepts to discuss how liminality is celebrated in the Hermetic tradition and how feminist author Charlotte Perkins Gilman wrote about the backrooms almost exactly how they are portrayed in today's creepypasta but over 100 years ago. This is the third episode in an occasional series examining influential elections in U.S. history. The most recent episode, The Election of 1992, was published on April 4. Audio excerpts of "Civil War" are courtesy A24 Films. Democracy and the Constitution are on the ballot. The fate of the republican is at stake. The potential for violence festers as Americans view their political foes as existential enemies. This was the United States in 1860. Abraham Lincoln's victory as the first antislavery president was met with Southern secession and war. In 1864, Lincoln expected to lose before major Union victories propelled him to a landslide victory, thereby keeping alive the Thirteenth Amendment to abolish slavery forever. In this episode, two of the premier historians of nineteenth century American politics, Sean Wilentz and James Oakes, delve into the enduring consequences of these two "revolutionary" elections.

Welcome everyone to the first episode of the podcast for the year and for this episode, I wanted to talk about the great work of one of the companies that has supported me the most in the previous year, A24! Overall, I recommend many of these films and I think I do a great job of giving a little bit of an idea for each, as well as ones I may not recommend as highly. Now that the A24 Rocks screw has reviewed every single A24 film from 2013-2016, they've decided to have a Mt. Rushmore draft. The way it works: a draft order will be determined by a random number generator, and when one host picks a film, then no one else can pick that film. The draft will then move in a "snake draft" style. Four faces of Mt. Rushmore and four movies. And you, dear listener, will get to vote on who has the best Mt. Rushmore. If you're on spotify: you can vote in the poll, otherwise find us on any of the big social media sites (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter) and vote on our post. Next week's episode will be The 2016 A24 Oscars featuring YouTube's own "The Martini Shot." --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/a24otr/support

Today on the show, we have storytelling guru John Bucher, who is a renowned strategist, communicator, and cultural mythologist based out of Hollywood, California. Disruptor named him one of the top 25 influencers in Virtual Reality in 2018.“John Bucher is an influencer. He's one of our most prolific contributors.” — HBOHe is the author of six books, including the best-selling Storytelling for Virtual Reality, named by BookAuthority as one of the best storytelling books of all time. He has spoken on five continents about using the power of story to reframe how products, individuals, organizations, cultures, and nations are viewed.John is a prolific writer.STORYTELLING FOR VIRTUAL REALITYStorytelling for Virtual Reality serves as a bridge between students of new media and professionals working between the emerging world of VR technology and the art form of classical storytelling. Rather than examining purely the technical, the text focuses on the narrative and how stories can best be structured, created, and then told in virtual immersive spaces. Author John Bucher examines the timeless principles of storytelling and how they are being applied, transformed, and transcended in Virtual Reality. Interviews, conversations, and case studies with both pioneers and innovators in VR storytelling are featured, including industry leaders at LucasFilm, 20th Century Fox, Oculus, Insomniac Games, and Google.A BEST PRACTICE GUIDE TO SEX AND STORYTELLINGA great deal of storytelling in film and television involves narratives that include sexual situations and nudity. The increased amount of online and streaming content outlets has, in turn, increased the number of narratives that involve these once-taboo subjects. Often, even though directors and producers desire to handle such issues with professionalism, sets become awkward when producing these scenes. A Best Practice Guide to Sex and Storytelling serves as a helpful tool for guiding creators through these waters.MASTER OF THE CINEMATIC UNIVERSEMaster of the Cinematic Universe is a guide to the future of transmedia storytelling. Content creators of every flavor are constantly needing to expand the mediums they can work in. This volume serves as a resource for using the timeless truths of story structure to craft established as well as up-and-coming short-form media formats.STORYTELLING BY THE NUMBERSStorytelling By The Numbers is a collection of essays and articles that John Bucher has written for LA Screenwriter and a variety of other outlets. All are meant to strengthen storytellers and scriptwriters. Bucher examines trends and tropes found in current film and television and uses these examples to demonstrate how and why they work as storytelling devices. Writers from any genre, working with any type of narrative, can find jewels of wisdom and applicable nuggets for their own ideas. The collection also features ten powerful writing prompts to assist writers in creating or developing a script idea from a single character.Enjoy my conversation with John Bucher. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/2664729/advertisement

The old adage of the show must go on has never been more apt for The Countdown as Wayne pushes through COVID to highlight some of the finer indie films of the last decade or so in this celebration of the very best A24 studio films. Of course, the guys had to record this week's episode remotely due to Wayne's positive status, and that means the show is minus its third and most valued member, The Soundboard. Wayne, shockingly, thinks this is the highlight of his week, while Paul appropriately commemorates their fallen colleague and wishes it a speedy return. Beyond that, there's plenty of indie films, some consternation, and a surprising amount of good-natured agreement (Wayne really must be sick!), as The Countdown continues ... Check out the show's first draft of a website for your one-stop shop for all things related to The Countdown. Livestream for the Cure is on May 19th - 21st American time.
