The heart of this thoughtful conversation shines when Adam states, “I'm looking for community,” he says and continues by reflecting, “I'm that queer artist that needed a home.” Their conversation continues as they discuss: creating supportive spaces for Queer youth to be creative and build community; how, within current systems, administrative practices can't always act in concert with the support systems created for meaningful community engagement; and the friction that comes with the balance of programming and finding moments for rest and grace.

Welcome to Pride Month! This is the 53rd annual pride in the United States. The first, in 1970, happened in New York City to mark the first anniversary of the Stonewall Riots – popularly considered to be a seminal moment in gay rights in the United States, when the queer community – trans folks, gay folks, drag queens, queers of all colors and races – protested the brutal tactics employed by the New York City Police Department to harass and intimidate the queer community. And, it was this protest that sent a shot across the bow of law enforcement, as well as the government generally and society as a whole, that the gay community was no longer going to be a silent victim to abuse and repression. Since then, Pride events in June each year have grown and proliferated in the United States – and also outside of our borders -  culminating in a month of visibility and celebration. As I will discuss with my guest today, and also in my closing thoughts, these events take on special significance and meaning this year – as the queer community is under a uniquely direct and targeted campaign of hatred and derision, largely driven by the Republican Party and the far-right Christian community in the United States.  Today's guest confronts this environment by providing creative outlets for queer artists, creators, performers, and youth to express themselves and showcase their talent in a safe space, but also on the world stage. Adam Odsess-Rubin is the Founding Artistic Director of National Queer Theater and co-founder of the annual, New York Times acclaimed, Criminal Queerness Festival. We talk about these projects, how and why they've developed, what it's like working in this medium in these challenging times, how National Queer Theater designs programming to provide an outlet for queer people and queer youth, how you can engage, especially as the 2023 Criminal Queerness Festival is just around the corner, corporate pinkwashing, and what the future of the queer community might look like (oh...and Padma Lakshmi). It's been said, by Jorge N. Neal, co-curator and museum educator at the Boyle Heights Museum, that “all roads lead to Boyle Heights, it's a place of intersection.” Boyle Heights, part of the original Spanish land grant that established the city of Los Angeles in 1781, covering roughly 6.5 square miles located 3 miles east of Downtown, is one of LA's oldest and most historically significant communities in the region. Historically, it's been home to generations of immigrants (being called the Ellis Island of the West), serving as home to some of the largest populations of Japanese and Jewish residents in Southern California. As CivitasLA celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month 2022, we're joined by Josefina Lopez, Founding Artistic Director of Casa 0101 Theater and screenwriter, and Alfred Fraijo Jr., attorney and community leader --- both raised in Boyle Heights and actively engaged in the civic and business life of the community -- for “Community Spotlight: Boyle Heights” as we explore this unique community; consider its rich history, its place at the center of the Latino experience in LA and central role in Chicano culture and social justice movements. What makes theatre such an important part of building connections -- both in school and out of school? And how can theatre help foster imagination and self-awareness as part of a strong STEM/STEAM program? Meet Selah Theatre Project's Founding Artistic Director, LaTasha Do'zia. Latasha is a visionary artist and entrepreneur who uses the arts to help build a stronger, kinder, and more creative community. As a teaching artist, LaTasha has used theatre as a tool for teacher development, private business communication, counselor training, mental health intervention, and social justice movements.  In 2021, LaTasha was appointed by the Governor to serve on the Virginia Commission for the Arts,.  It has been my privilege to lead professional development workshops on multicultural picture books and STEAM connections with LaTasha. We are co-teaching at Shenandoah University, where we explore bringing multicultural picture books to life. Full show notes.[02:07] We talk about LaTasha's personal adventure in learning and how she reached a place where she owns and operates her own theatre company. "I discovered theater when I was six years old," LaTasha says. "My mother said that I was too dramatic and I needed to put that energy somewhere." We've said this before on the podcast, but books have an amazing power to provide windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors for children (and adults) as they navigate establishing their identities and figuring out who they are in the world. If you haven't read it yet, I strongly encourage you to check out Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop's seminal work on the subject. At [04:27], we learn that LaTasha's favorite book from her childhood that also served as a mirror was John Steptoe's Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters. We delve deeper into the creation of LaTasha's Selah Theatre Project, which she started 11 years ago. LaTasha offers a sneak peek at the new season, which includes What the Consitution Means to Me, Trouble In Mind, Macbeth, Akeelah and the Bee, and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?   [06:51]  "We do 8 productions a year and it's a mixture of youth theater, teen theater, and community theater," she says. "We focus on diverse voices as much as possible. And diversity comes in so many ways. It's not just racial, it's also socioeconomic, it's also learning based. There's so much diversity in our group and we're very proud of that. We're small but mighty."[16:58] I have been fortunate enough to work with LaTasha to help teachers and librarians unlock strategies for connecting multicultural picture books with STEAM for more engaged learning. "My tunnel vision of choral music just exploded. I was able to learn so much about all these different cultures that were in my school and the music that represented them. That's where I really learned that students have to have some representation to make them feel that they're really part of this community."Amanda Stevenson is currently the 4th and 5th grade vocal music teacher at Titan Hill Intermediate School in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Recently, Ms. Stevenson was the Founding Artistic Director for the Omaha Children's Choir - an organization she founded to provide all singers with an appreciation and understanding of the city's diversity and to inspire change by the power of choral music. Over the last 7 years, Ms. Stevenson created an inclusive and diverse repertoire that truly reflected the singers represented in Omaha Children's Choir. She led the organization to launch the Voices Creating Change initiative which gives voice to the issues of our time and uses music as a tool to inspire social change in the community. Ms. Stevenson also taught middle school vocal music in Iowa. Ms. Stevenson holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Iowa Wesleyan University and a Master of Music with an emphasis in choral music education from Western Illinois University. She is currently working on a Master of Arts in Teaching, Leadership, and Cultural Competency through the University of Iowa. She lives in Omaha with her husband, 4 children, and their dog Oscar. To get in touch with Amanda, you can find her on Instagram or Twitter (@amandastvnsn) or on Facebook (@amandarstevenson).Email choirfampodcast@gmail.com to contact our hosts.Podcast music from Podcast.coPhoto in episode artwork by Trace Hudson from Pexels

Following the last few weeks of the tragic and devastating war in Ukraine at the hands of Vladimir Putin's Russia, we felt a responsibility to welcome two phenomenal and brilliant young people of Ukrainian descent into the Gayborhood. We're honored this episode to host actor/activist Aleksandr "Sasha" Krapivkin and Adam Odsess-Rubin, the Founding Artistic Director of the National Queer Theater. Sasha and Adam speak to their families' respective heritages as refugees from Ukraine, more than a century apart, with Adam's family immigrating in the wake of the tsarist pogroms and Sasha arriving in America 18 years ago. We discuss their Jewish ancestry and the history of anti-semitism and racism in Ukraine. We then learn more about how the current war with Russia is impacting the queer people of Ukraine and the trans community specifically. In addition to discussing the cultural and linguistic differences between Ukraine and Russia, Sasha also treats us to a staggeringly gorgeous selection from a beloved Ukrainian song, so be sure to listen all the way to the end of the episode. Our hearts remain with the Ukrainian people, and we encourage all our listeners to support Ukraine however possible. Go on Instagram to follow Sasha at @aleksandr.krapivkin and Adam at @adamodsessrubin_92, and learn everything you can about the organizations highlighted in this week's Gayborhood Watch: the documentary on the Ukrainian fight for democracy "Winter on Fire;" Black Ukrainian activist Betty Fosho; Ukrainian trans support organization Cohort; LGBTQ refugee support organization Immigration Equality; Canadian NGO Rainbow Railroad; non-profit Razom for Ukraine; Kyiv Pride; Kharkiv Pride; and Direct Help for Ukraine (http://directhelpforukraine.info/ (directhelpforukraine.info)), whose website was designed by Gayborhood friend and ally Daria Lavelle. Slava Ukraini, heroyam slava! And don't forget to follow @rogerq.mason, @lovell.holder, @miachanger, and @dgonzalezmusic on Instagram for all your Gayborhood updates.
