Who is responsible for making a work of art? In each episode of this collaborative podcast series, one anthropologist, specialising in a particular cultural context, has a conversation with an artist of their choosing, exploring issues of authorship and responsibility in art. Ranging across geographical locations and creative practices, discussions address and unpack the conceptualisation of the artistic person, authorship as centred upon an individual or bounded group, and the development of responsibility for artworks during and after their making. Each episode brings a fresh perspective on where ideas come from, what agency an artist feels in the creation of their work, and how, and in which contexts, ownership and responsibility for the artwork are claimed. Ultimately, as a collection, the series encourages listeners to think about ‘the artist' and ‘the artwork' as dynamic processes in a relationship of authoring. Series 3, Episode 7 of Artery features Florentina Manuel Martínez with Michele A. Feder-Nadoff and Claudia Rocha Valverde Florentina Manuel Martínez is a textile artist originally from the state of Veracruz, in the municipality of Chicontepec, in the community of Ateno. She is a Náhuatl language speaker. Currently she is living in Tamaletom (the municipality of Tancanhuitz, in the state of San Luis Potosí, México). Florentina is married to a Tének flyer man of Tamaletom. (Tének is an Indigenous group of Mexico and flying refers to the traditional ritual dance of prehispanic origins.) Florentina has lived in Tamaleton for 18 years and has learned much about the Tének culture. Michele A. Feder-Nadoff is an artist and anthropologist whose practice and research is concerned with the meaning of making [https://mfedernadoff.academia.edu]. This led to her founding the non-profit Cuentos Foundation, becoming a Fulbright Scholar and cultural anthropologist, PhD, El Colegio de Michoacán. Her critical aesthetics integrates onto-epistemology, performance, and phenomenology with multimodal and collaborative methods designed to decolonize education, art and anthropology. Her artwork is included in private and public collections worldwide. Recent publications include her edited volume, Performing Craft in Mexico: Artisans, Aesthetics and the Power of Translation, 2022, Lexington (Bloomsbury Press), her monograph An Anthropology of Making in Santa Clara del Cobre: Presence of Absence, 2024, Palgrave, and numerous book chapters and articles. MCALLEN, Texas - During his 2025 State of the City Address, McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos said he is often asked why he spends so much time in Mexico. “Simple,” Villalobos said, answering the question. “Mexico believes in McAllen. Mexico embraces McAllen. Mexico invests in McAllen. Quiero que sepan mis amigos Mexicanos. Que McAllen entra alla a Mexico. And we depend on each other for trade and commerce, and tourism. And many times, we are just family. A todos mis amigos Mexicanos. To all my Mexican friends, please stand and be recognized.” In his remarks, Villalobos spoke about the networking opportunities presented at McAllen's annual MxLAN Summit. He said the 2024 event welcomed over 40 businesses and 90 participants from Mexican states such as Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Durango, Jalisco, Tamaulipas and more. “The summit helped build more than 37 emerging business partnerships and new opportunities for McAllen,” he said. Villalobos also pointed to McAllen's decision to set up a Department of International Relations. “It has had an immediate impact,” the mayor said, running through some of the cities and countries that have sent representatives to McAllen thanks to the outreach of the new department. He said diplomats from Ireland and France have visited the city, along with the governor of San Luis Potosí, and sister city delegations from Apodaca, Puerto Vallarta, Reynosa and Monterey. He said they also welcomed delegations from the departments of state in Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Durango, Oaxaca, Puebla, Quintana Rio, Tabasco, Veracruz, and Zacatecas. “In Mexico City we hosted McAllen Day, and in Monterrey we secured agreements with World Trade Center Monterrey, with the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo León, and with COMCE Noreste, the Mexican council for foreign aid,” Villalobos said. “And we just signed a trade agreement with a state of San Luis Potosi and a reaffirmation of sister city agreements with San Luis capital. And McAllen's first friendship partnership agreement with Tampico. “McAllen's agreements will push economic growth, help develop new businesses, build cultural connections, and bring our nation and people closer.” Editor's Note: The attached audio also includes Mayor Villalobos' remarks on the Anzalduas International Bridge. BROWNSVILLE, Texas - William Dietrich, port director and CEO of the Port of Brownsville, says the South Texas-Northern Tamaulipas region is something special and unique. Dietrich gave an exclusive interview to Ron Whitlock Reports at the conclusion of a tour of the port by 45-plus business owners from southern Mexico. The tour was arranged by the McAllen chapter of Asociacion de Empresarios Mexicanos and COMCE Sur. “When I was at the BTAC meeting last week, I explained up there about how the border region is quite different from both countries. And what I mean is the distance between Mexico City and the border, and the distance of the border to Washington, DC., I think we've created our own culture down here and that culture interrelates amongst each other no matter what the national rhetoric is,” Dietrich said. “I think we've created a country within a country down here and understanding that our relationship, our cross-border relationships, are so strong that I believe it's going to be something that's going to magnify in the future and be something that we build on and we create this new economy down here in the Rio Grande Valley.” BTAC stands for Border Trade Advisory Committee. It is run by the Texas Department of Transportation, and it met two weeks ago in Houston. “I think I was received very well. It was very celebratory, and I think we brought a lot to the table. And most of all, we were able to showcase the Rio Grande Valley's port, the Port of Brownsville. I believe that statewide we are respected, and I think everyone's starting to see this potential and what's going on down here. We definitely have something spectacular going on.” Dietrich was also asked how much involvement the Port of Brownsville has with the automotive industry. He said it is mostly involved through the importation of steel. “We bring in 5.9 million metric tons of steel every year. That's sent off to the maquila industry, for the (manufacture of) vehicles, white appliances and all that. We do send some north,” Dietrich said. "I think we're going to see more as it relates to the vehicle industry. Some of the Pacific Coast ports, they're trying to find a nexus to the Gulf side. And we should be looking at bringing in container service within the next couple years. And a lot of that is going to be related to the automotive industry.” Dietrich continued: “About 90 to 95 percent of our steel is actually going into the maquila industry, into Monterrey, Saltillo, San Luis Potosi, and the other five to 10 percent is going north.” Asked if the Port of Brownsville will benefit from Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's decision to build a container freight rail corridor between the Pacific to the Gulf coasts, Dietrich said: “Absolutely. To be able to take advantage of what the west coast of of Mexico has with its naturally deepwater ports, to be able to bring some of that over here will be great. And we can definitely be a component of that.” In his interview, Dietrich also spoke about SpaceX's use of the Port of Brownsville, the new training center being built at the port by Texas A&M, and the port's new industrial park.
