HORROR WITH SIR. STURDY EPISODE 548 WICKED CITY
Boomer returns to where it all began with a curse and this time Gabby is there to share the horror.
In this town, there's only so many things to do: find a quiet place to park, get lucky, then deliver that special someone a slideshow about how now they've got a death curse. That's right, love is in the air and a murderous demon entity is on our trail as we explore IT FOLLOWS for its 10th anniversary!! Along the way, we dig into the fabulous grab bag of horror and cultural influences that are woven into fabric of the film, explore the post-collapse aesthetic of Detroit, wonder why all these parents are so disconnected from the world their kids occupy, and debate the mainstream idea that the movie is a “casual sex is bad” horror. All this, plus high heel pursuits, awkward friend dynamics, Ju-On jokes, Plan Boo, Ozploitation references, and a limb-snapping edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! The boys are back and this time they are traversing the terrifying world of J-Horror. Thankfully not alone cause they would be to scared, they are joined by Spooky Celluloid. They will be taking a look at Ju-On the Curse, Ringu, and Audition.
The Vampire Doll (1970), Lake of Dracula (1971), and Evil of Dracula (1974). In the annals of Japanese horror cinema, this vampire trilogy from director Michio Yamamoto seems to be close to escaping into obscurity. In fact, try finding much more than a passing mention of these films in any reference books. But thanks to Arrow Video, all three of these films are at least saved from fading away in the sunlight like any good vampire, in one fantastic box set! Because these seemed to be on the outskirts of the vampire genre, we thought it would be a great opportunity for us to take a closer look at them, and to see if they need more attention. Listen and find out! Films mentioned in this episode: Blacula (1972), Cannibal Holocaust (1980), Count Yorga, Vampire (1970), Dracula 72 AD (1972), El Topo (1970), Evil of Dracula (1974), Frankenstein (1931), Frankenstein vs Baragon (1965), Horror of Dracula (1957), Ju-On (2002), King Kong vs Godzilla (1963), Lake of Dracula (1971), Lust for a Vampire (1971), Ring (1998), Seeding of a Ghost (1983), Son of Frankenstein (1939), Throne of Blood (1957), The Vampire Doll (1970), Vampyros Lesbos (1971)
Horror, like comedy, is subjective and personal. What disturbs or horrifies one person can harmlessly bounce off another. Case in point is this weeks selection in the Month of Pete. Dark Water is hailed as one of the seminal examples of J-Horror from the early 2000s along with the likes of Ju-On and Ringu. The dread and madness of the film that delighted Troy and Pete fell completely flat for Charlie and Nate. Even though Charlie and Nate wanted desperately for this movie to speak to them, the film just didn't. It's not that they didn't "get" it, it just wasn't their cup of tea. Troy and Pete do sing the films praises and the entire gang was split down the middle. Dark Water is a slow burn that never really has a climax but rather an ending that you will need to decide for yourself if it's satisfying.

Nobody does horror quite like Japan, and it's fascinating to see the original Grudge before the Americans got ahold of it. This also serves as a reminder of the importance of full disclosure in real estate! Join us as we watch various unfortunate well-meaning Nihonjin try to cope with a raven-haired glottal fly wraith mom, a catty kid in eyeliner, and a nail-biter of a dad. And if the visuals don't creep you out, the soundscape surely will. Bonus: Charles thinking he has even a rudimentary command of Japanese, and his husband Tom setting things right. Soooo desu. Juon the giant takes Kitty and Tyro to a possible gateway between his world and the Hoomin world.
After a short hiatus, the goblins are back to talk about the sequel to the first Ju-On film. That's only like half the episode, though, as we spend the other half talking about whatever. This is episode 27, you should know how we work at this point.
It's our first foray into the world of J-Horror was we take a look at the first 3 films in the Ju-On franchise. We talk about the effectiveness of a good ghost story, and what we do and don't like about American ghost movies. John also rambles very briefly about Doctor Sleep.

Byrd, Kevin and Tom discuss the Gakkou No Kaidan (aka Haunted School aka School Ghost Stories aka Ghost Stories) franchise with the main point of discussion being Toho's four live action films from the 1990s. Haunted School is a multi-media franchise that started as a book of short stories written by a teacher who got ideas for children's horror stories from his students. It has since gotten film, television, anime, and feature film adaptations, as well as video games, toys, etc. The Japanese TV specials largely paved the way for the J-Horror boom, including a spinoff series, Ju-On (aka The Grudge), which itself has become a global pop culture phenomenon. Toho's films were released between 1995 and 1999 with three entries being directed by Hideyuki Hirayama (Samurai Resurrection 2003) and one by Shusuke Kaneko (GMK, Gamera Trilogy) and were met with box office success in Japan but still remain elusive internationally. So how do these movies hold up? And how does this franchise tie into Toho's Bloodthirsty trilogy? Listen and find out!
Okay so it's no Creep. But Ben and Judah are watching The Grudge in this episode! That's right THE Grudge. Pretty big deal. You might be thinking? Are they watching the original Japanese film Ju-On from 2002? No, they're not. Are they watching the English Grudge from 2004? No, they're not. They're watching the 2020 version with John Cho and that one lady from Insidious but the old one. Yea... They also talk way too much about suckers and get distracted. Come watchalong with The Grudge (2020) directed by Nicolas Pesce and produced by Sam Raimi. Love ya! Boo! Sorry!

Listen up Horror Fiends! The Horror Junkies are back for another week of snacks and shenanigans and this month Patrick pick all Japanese and Korean Horror movies for us to watch. In the final week of this weird journey we watch and discuss Hideo Nakata's 1998 release titled Ringu. Not much to say about this slow burn of a film and we might even have to say that the 2002 remake is a better film. The second film of the show is Takashi Shimizu's 2002 third installment into the Ju-On series titled Ju-On: The Grudge. A fun movie that paces with a turn of a screw with most of the events happening in the final 30 mins of the film. Want to risk watching the cursed tape? Follow the link and beware! STATEMENT BY THE PRODUCERS. The producers of the show would like to apologise for the APPALLING pronunciation of the actors' names in this episode. We would also like to apologise for the two minutes of radio silence while we laugh at Rob's pronunciation of said actors' names. Directed by Takashi Shimizu in 2002, this film sparked a huge influx of Asian cinema into western homes, but is it actually any good? Tune in to find out.
