Today we welcome musician Keaton Henson onto the A Year in Horror podcast to chat about a subject close to all our hearts, horror movies. Well, sort of... This one is definitely bedded into the science fiction genre and shares the same graceful and thoughtful approach as Keaton's music. Having him conduct any interview is a rare thing and to have him delve into his music and cinema with me was an absolute treat. Enjoy
Closing out our spooky month, we're taking a look at The Vast of Night (2019). A small town in New Mexico starts hearing some disturbances in the night, and two young teens investigate where they might be coming from. The film is more Twilight Zone than Saw, but it certainly makes you think about what goes bump in the night. It's the debut film of Andrew Patterson, starring Sierra McCormick and Jake Horowitz. Enjoy this review of The Vast of Night (2019). Cinema Spectator is a movie podcast hosted by Isaac Ransom, Juzo Greenwood, and Cameron Tuttle. A lot of movies came and went during the Pandemic Years, but one of those straight-to-streaming films made its way into the book and we think you should know about it. This week, join the 1001 by 1 crew as they discuss the Sci-Fi throwback “The Vast of Night” – they break down the film's impressive style despite its low budget, the wonderful storytelling choices, and the boldness that writer/director Andrew Patterson showed in his debut feature film. Also, this week Adam recommends “Late Nate with the Devil” (available on Shudder), Britt recommends “Pontypool” (available on Shudder), and Joey recommends “Challengers” (available to rent on most major platforms). It's always fun when you get to talk with someone amazing BEFORE they become a star...On this episode we dive head first into a brilliant new movie hitting VOD platforms tomorrow. It's time for 'Edge of Everything'.A teenager (Sierra McCormick) on the cusp of turning 15, straddles the line between childhood and adulthood when she is forced to move in with her father and his younger girlfriend after her mother's death.Edge of Everything is a brilliantly grounded coming of age story that is more emotionally engaging then you'd expect at first glance thanks to an excellent performance from lead Sierra McCormick. You may recognize Sierra from films like Vast of Night and V.F.W. but there's no doubt that here in this film she delivers a performance that could just be setting her up to be on the brink of being something pretty big.We talk about reading for the role and her initial reactions as well as the work in general and worshiping at the altar of cinema to really make herself more well rounded and even more impressive in this incredibly difficult business. You heard it from us first, Sierra McCormick is going to be a force to be reckoned with if she keeps doing amazing work like she does here.
Why do aliens visit earth? Why are they so obsessed with couples? And how expensive are UFOs really? Did you know there's a 90's Jack Nicholson werewolf movie with Michelle Pfeiffer and James Spader? Well count your lucky stars today because it gets a brief mention on the round up. But then again so does Kevin Costner's Postman movie, so I guess count your unlucky stars too. Ian and David welcome back filmmaker Emily Lape to talk about her upcoming sci-fi drama, Abiquiu, and one of the movies that inspired it, Andrew Patterson's The Vast of Night! This episode is part movie review, and part promotion of the Abiquiu crowdfunding campaign, which is currently underway at Seed&Spark. But it's also a look at one writer/director's grind in getting a microbudget indie off the ground--from scripting and meeting with potential investors, to casting and location scouting from across the country--all while balancing a day job that has nothing to do with the industry! If you're interested in helping Emily make Abiquiu a reality, please consider supporting her Seed&Spark campaign via the link below, and check out her debut feature, the Chicago-set Mercy's Girl, on Amazon Prime!Show LinksWatch the Vast of Night trailer.Support Emily's Seed&Spark campaign for Abiquiu.Watch Emily's 2018 feature, Mercy's Girl, on Amazon Prime.Watch Ian and Emily's conversation about Mercy's Girl.Follow David Fowlie's film criticism at Keeping It Reel.Subscribe to, like, and comment on the Kicking the Seat YouTube channel!

What's the tale, nightingale? What a gem! It's always such a rush to find a film that almost nobody else knows about, made by someone you've never heard of (because this is his first feature), acted by faces you don't recognize . . . and it's wonderful. That is The Vast of Night, a tale of secret government projects, odd sounds over the airwaves, and aliens in the skies, all set in the warm and coziness of small-town 1950s. We watched. We discussed. Check it out :)

For me, one of the great thrills of smaller filmmaking is seeing the ingenuity and invention that often comes from less money and no studio oversight. A great example of this is 2019's The Vast of Night.
