The Grudge is a 2004 American supernatural horror film directed by Takashi Shimizu, written by Stephen Susco. A remake of Shimizu's 2002 Japanese horror film Ju-On: The Grudge, it is the first installment in The Grudge film series. It stars Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jason Behr, KaDee Strickland, Clea DuVall, and Bill Pullman. Takako Fuji, Yuya Ozeki, and Takashi Matsuyama portray the main family characters from the original films. The film was produced by Sam Raimi, Robert Tapert, and Takashige Ichise, who brought Shimizu, director of the original Japanese films, to the US for this remake. The music for the film was composed by horror score aficionado Christopher Young. Synopsis The Grudge 2004 is an Americanized version of the movie Ju-on, a Japanese franchise about a curse of resentment and anger. Both Ju-on and The Grudge are directed by Takashi Shimizu, and the Grudge is produced by (among others) Sam Raimi. The movie stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as Karen, an American who moved to Japan with her boyfriend to study nursing. While attending to her first in-home patient, Emma, who is an elderly woman with dementia, she realizes that there might be something dark lurking in the home. After some creepy occurrences, Karen has no choice but to dig deeper into the house's history and the legends surrounding it. Review The Grudge has interesting ghost lore, which isn't too different from the way we view ghosts in America, but adds emphasis on reliving the violent past, which I think is fun and gives the viewer a bit more to latch onto as far as why the ghost exists. The ghost looks extremely creepy in most scenes, with a face that genuinely terrified me as a kid, even before I had seen the movie. Its mark on pop culture is undeniable. However, a part of me likes my memory of this movie more than the movie itself. Some of the scenes feel pretty copy and paste, especially the scenes about Karen trying to research the house and learn clues. Some of the scares came off as a bit goofy, which is fine, except that the tone of the movie is very heavy, so these silly-looking scares can feel a little out of place and unintentional. Still, the movie is good, in my opinion, and has a place within my mind that will never go away. Score: 8/10

Christian Zyp interviews Sarah Appleton and Jasper Sharp (co-directors) about their documentary THE J-HORROR VIRUS. It screens as part of CUFF.Docs Sat Nov 25th @ 9:30 pm at the Globe Cinema in Calgary.THE J-HORROR VIRUS charts the origins, evolution and diffusion across the world of a distinctive brand of made-in-Japan supernatural chillers featuring vengeful ghosts manifesting themselves through contemporary technology against a backdrop of urban alienation and social decay. From its origins in Teruyoshi Ishii's fake documentary PSYCHIC VISION: JAGANREI (1988) and Norio Tsuruta's seminal SCARY TRUE STORIES (1991/92) straight-to-video series, through such key titles as Hideo Nakata's RING (1998), Kiyoshi Kurosawa's PULSE (2001) and Takashi Shimizu's JU-ON: THE GRUDGE (2002), critics and the filmmakers reflect on how the bleak dystopic visions and unsettling atmospheres that made these works so unique infiltrated their way across the world.

What happens when a US studio remakes a Japanese film with the original director still behind the camera? After an extended talk about Takashi Shimizu's 2002 breakout film, Ju-On: The Grudge, the Split Picks crew — Bennett Glace, Jim Hickcox, Frankie Vanaria and host Craig Wright — picks up with The Grudge franchise making its way to the US. After the US remake of Ringu (as The Ring) became a global sensation, The Grudge was tapped as the next film up and confirmed that J-horror was ready for primetime. Shimizu was asked to direct the remake, and he said he would do so only if he could bring his ghosts with him in Kayako (Takako Fuji) and Toshio (Yuya Ozeki). But with Sarah Michelle Gellar in the lead role and a brief Bill Pullman appearance as Americans abroad, the film is fundamentally different from the suburban Japanese original. Through the episode they debate whether the remake is stronger than the original Ju-On: The Grudge — or if the trailer is stronger than the film itself. Namely, they talk about how the US remake softens most of the previous version's best scares, and wonder if Americans are truly as unintelligent as studios would like to believe. In 2020 director Nicolas Pesce revived the franchise with The Grudge, a film set in the same universe that is not a direct sequel or remake. It is also an American work produced by Sam Raimi, and it asks what happens if the curse could spread to a different location. The discussion follows what happens when the original creator loses control of a franchise, and whether the films were too slow to evolve their brand of horror. Also in the episode: Jim hypothesizes what it might be like to take his short horror film Slow Creep from a short to an international big-budget adaptation; Bennett swears the 2020 Grudge is the finest offering of the series. Frankie enjoys none of the Grudges. Craig reveals which film put him to sleep. Who tests ramen packaging that way? And how exactly does the WWE predict the state of horror and culture at large? Tune in to find out!

This film pays tribute to 1980s zombie film (derived from Taoist folklore) series like "Mr. Vampire" and features many stars who were part of 1980s "hopping vampire" movies. The hosts also discussed how Juno Mak and Takashi Shimizu meticulously designed the scenes and the significance of remaking zombie films in 2013.
For this year's Split Picks horror series, we look at some of the finest horror films and director's that Japan has to offer. Each year for October Horror, Split Picks takes a virtual field trip to a different country to find some of the best horror films and directors from around the world. In 2021 we started at home and looked at what we determined to be the Mt. Rushmore of American horror with Tobe Hooper, John Carpenter, Wes Craven, and George A. Romero. Last year we put on our black gloves and fell in with the Italian greats — Dario Argento, Sergio Martino, Lucio Fulci — to talk all things giallo. This year we are talking about Japan and some of their famous ghosts, grudges, and gothic imagery. Obviously, Japan has a huge cultural history with horror films that dates back to the dawn of the medium. We are not covering the history of Japanese horror in this series, and will instead focus on a few signature works from select directors. For this series we are going to be looking at a mix of classic and lesser-heralded films from some of Japan's greatest horror filmmakers. This is only a quick survey of what Japan has to offer, and we picked three filmmakers for a combination of styles that complement each other, hint at the country's vast film history, and also how their particular styles of horror compare to the rest of the world. With that in mind, we decided to kick off this series with Takashi Shimizu and his world-famous series 'The Grudge.' In this first episode we will be looking at his first theatrical version of 'Ju-On: The Grudge.' Then we will discuss the 2004 American remake, which he also directed, and contrast it with the 2020 US sequel, also simply called 'The Grudge,' and directed by Nicholas Pesce. Featuring Split Picks regulars Bennett Glace, Jim Hickcox, and Frankie Vanaria, the series begins here and will run through most of the month! Listen to hear all about The Grudge and how it developed from two initial short films into an international sensation.

This week the kids discuss the 1997 Japanese classic, Cure, by Kiyoshi Kurosawa. But first! They discuss L.A. finance, Jane Fonda, Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight, Ernest Dickerson, Billy Zane, William Sadler, the weird career of Dennis Miller, Disclosure, The Net, Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, Columbo, Robert Culp, Straw Dogs, Video Archives, The Loved One, and more. From Wiki: “Cure (キュア, Kyua) is a 1997 Japanese psychological thriller film written and directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, starring Kōji Yakusho, Masato Hagiwara, Tsuyoshi Ujiki and Anna Nakagawa. The story follows a detective investigating a string of gruesome murders where an X is carved into the neck of each victim, and the murderer is found near the victim of each case and remembers nothing of the crime. It is considered a progenitor of the explosion of Japanese horror media in the late 1990s and early 2000s, preceding other releases like Hideo Nakata's Ring and Takashi Shimizu's Ju-On: The Grudge.[1]” NEXT WEEK: Pearl Website: http://www.bloodhauspod.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/BloodhausPod Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/ Email: bloodhauspod@gmail.com Drusilla's art: https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/ Drusilla's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hydesister/ Drusilla's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/drew_phillips/ Joshua's website: https://www.joshuaconkel.com/ Joshua's Twitter: https://twitter.com/JoshuaConkel Joshua's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/ Joshua's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/joshuaconkel

Teen Horror Cast, where we watch and discuss horror movies from a teen's perspective. This week we watched The Grudge, a classic of the J-Horror sub genre. 2004's The Grudge is a remake of a Japanese film from 2002. Both films were directed by Takashi Shimizu. If you listened to our episode number 3 on another J-Horror film, The Ring, we will be handling this situation of an American remake of a Japanese original in a similar manner. Spoilers ahead! The Grudge describes a curse that is born when someone dies in the grip of extreme rage or sorrow, created where the person died. Those who encounter the curse die, and the curse is reborn repeatedly, passing from victim to victim in an endless, growing chain of horror. The following events are explained in their actual order, however, the film is presented in a nonlinear narrative. In 2001, Kayako Saeki, a housewife living in suburban Tokyo, is in love with college professor Peter Kirk, obsessively writing about him in a diary. Her husband Takeo becomes jealous as he discovers the diary and believes that Kayako is having an affair with another man. Takeo brutally murders her, and their young son Toshio for walking in on the murder, and the pet cat Mar in a fit of rage. After Takeo hides the bodies in the house, Kayako's ghost hangs him with her hair. After receiving a letter from Kayako, Peter visits the Saeki house only to find both her and Takeo's corpses along with Toshio's ghost. Shocked, he flees the scene and commits suicide the next day. The remainder of the Saeki family rise again as ghosts due to the curse, notably Kayako, who appears as an onryō.In 2004, the Williams family from America move into the Saeki house. While Matt is thrilled with the house, his wife Jennifer and dementia-ridden mother Emma feel uncomfortable. Matt and Jennifer are quickly consumed by the curse. Yoko, a care worker, arrives at the house to find Emma alone before she encounters Kayako, who drags her up into the attic.Concerned about Yoko's disappearance, her employer Alex sends another care worker, Karen Davis, to take over the care of Emma. At the house, Karen discovers Toshio sealed up in a wardrobe and later on witnesses Kayako's spirit descending from the ceilings to claim Emma.Follow the Complete Guide to Horror Movies podcast on our social channels below.↪ Facebook↪ TikTok↪ Twitter↪ Instagram↪ Subscribe to our YouTube channel↪ Tip us $5↪ LinktreeIn late 2002, the unexpected success of the English-language remake of The Ring finally gave Sony Pictures confidence to green-light an English-language remake of Ju-On: The Grudge. Listen up Horror Fiends! The Horror Junkies are back for another week of snacks and shenanigans and this month Patrick pick all Japanese and Korean Horror movies for us to watch. In the final week of this weird journey we watch and discuss Hideo Nakata's 1998 release titled Ringu. Not much to say about this slow burn of a film and we might even have to say that the 2002 remake is a better film. The second film of the show is Takashi Shimizu's 2002 third installment into the Ju-On series titled Ju-On: The Grudge. A fun movie that paces with a turn of a screw with most of the events happening in the final 30 mins of the film. Want to risk watching the cursed tape? Follow the link and beware! This week we picked two random Japanese films from the 2000's that deal with 2 Haunted Villages that have been sunken by a dam. We review faux documentary Noroi: The Curse (2005) about a journalist looking for a missing woman and child who somehow keeps disappearing every time he's close. He teams up with a few psychics to find the true horror of what's going on. Then we picked a new one that just released in the US called Howling Village (2019) by Takashi Shimizu who was the creator of Ju-on The Grudge. About a cursed and haunted location known as 'Howling Village'. When a family gets wrapped up in a few disappearances they fall deep and deep into the depths of this villages dark history. The "Ju-On/The Grudge" franchise contains 13 films and a NetFlix series. The series is an interesting one. Takashi Shimizu created the franchise, and directed or produced six of the films. Besides the Japanese movies, there are 4 American entries-- "The Grudge", "The Grudge 2", "The Grudge 3" and "The Grudge" (2020). There's also a fun crossover with "The Ring" franchise with "Sadako vs Kayako". The franchise may be a bit hard for some viewers to follow. The pacing is pretty slow in the earlier entries. The stories are also told in a nonlinear fashion so you're not sure what/when everything happened. Still the series is one of the most prominent examples of J-horror. The death rattling Kayako and the meowing Toshio are iconic characters. And for the food this week, i obviously went with Japanese cuisine. Check out the GoWithGuide.com here for some favorites. In honor of Asian Heritage Month, we're diving back into the world of J-horror with Takashi Shimizu's Ju-On: The Grudge. Did we find this seminal work of Japanese horror as terrifying as others? Will the white faced ghosts and scratchy throat noises haunt our dreams? Unlikely, but we hope you'll still listen to this episode anyway. Try not to hold a...grudge. Vi pratar också om: The Thing from Another World, The Ring, A Tale of Two Sisters, Takashi Shimizu, Sam Raimi, Aterrados, Veronica Franz, Sarah Michelle Geller, Clea Duvall, Bill Pullman, Laura Palmer, Naomi Watts, Robert Tappert, Christopher Young, Låt den rätte komma in, Dark Water, Kim Jee-Woon, I Saw the Devil, Bröderna Grimm, bröderna Guard (nej, de lär inte ha riktigt samma status om 150 år), Emily Browning, Handen som gungar vaggan, Fight Club, High Fidelity, Trainspotting, Todd Solondz, Welcome to the Dollhouse och Philip Glass.
Is it possible for the first film in an international horror mega-franchise to really be "forgotten"? If you're the Ju-On franchise, the answer is yes. On this week's episode, Matthew Monagle and Matt Donato are joined by Terry Mesnard to discuss Takashi Shimizu's debut feature, often lost in a confusing labyrinth of remakes and sequels.
Angry ghosts in your wall, eh? Now you're speaking my language. This week we watch the entirety disappointing, early 2000’s, “The Grudge.” Jen had never seen it and middle school Molly was completely messed up by it. However, it sure didn't live up to the memories. Join us as we discuss the messy AF timelines, the spinoff series we want (Toshio and his cat), and the quick killing techniques of the Grudge Lady. We also discuss the series finale of Game of Thrones (season 8, episode 6, “The Iron Throne”), so skip to 13:15 to avoid GoT spoilers. Be sure to rate and subscribe on iTunes or Molly will add you to her Grudge list. Stats/info: 2004, directed by Takashi Shimizu, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Takako Fuji, Yuya Ozeki, Takashi Matsuyama, and Jason Behr (Intro music from https://www.free-stock-music.com)

This week we tackle two movies! The 2002 Ju-On: The Grudge and it’s 2004 American remake, The Grudge! Both directed by Takashi Shimizu, one with Sarah Michelle Gellar, both with terror! Join us in the cursed house we call Blood Chuggers!

Welcome back to Hero Hero Ghost Show! Relieved of solo duties, I am joined by Hello! This is the Doomed Show‘s Richard Glenn Schmidt for our second venture into the land of Japanese love demons. We begin with Takashi Shimizu’s wonderful take on the Tomie story, Tomie: Rebirth, and it’s amazing set pieces and horrible gift-giving ideas. Then, we take on Tomie: Forbidden Fruit, the movie that should be the naughtiest in the series and somehow just… isn’t. Warning, there is a whole lot of silliness contained in this episode. Welcome back, Ghost Show heroes! First of all, thanks to all who have been listening and offering feedback. You guys are the best! Enough pandering, though, we have ghosts to talk about! In particular, Taeko, Kayako and Toshio, the unholy trinity of spooks in Takashi Shimizu’s Ju-on. Dave Zendano of the Exploding Heads Horror Podcast joins me to talk about the often confusing plot, the similarities between this film and classic Western horror, black cats (some stuffed), croaking and how fear is like a sense of humor. big thanks to dave for lending his passion and expertise to the show! Opening Song: Sex on the Bach by TsuShiMaMiRe Closing Song: Escapism by Head Phones President You can join us on Facebook here and subscribe on iTunes (and leave us a review) here! See you next week for Phone with Ricky Morgan from the Hail Ming Power Hour! The post Hero Hero Ghost Show!: Episode 4 – Ju-on appeared first on Legion.
Welcome to episode 108! This week we review the 2004 Japanese film 'Marebito', by director Takashi Shimizu (Ju-On, The Grudge). We also watched Diary of a Wimpy Kid this week, since last week we mentioned the sequel. Other short topics include the TV show 'Ink Master', and the quirky movie 'Adaptation' starring Nicolas Cage and Meryl Streep. These generate some discussion on reality TV shows and whether or not Nicolas Cage is a good actor (he really is!). In the next couple weeks we'll be having Slug (from the Slugcast) join us for a review of Vincent Price's 'Abominable Dr. Phibes'. We're looking forward to it! ... Thanks for joining us this week! Marebito: (2004) R Masuoka (Shinya Tsukamoto), a fragile cameraman who's afraid of the unknown that he's certain lurks around every corner, is the last person one would expect to rise to the occasion when courage is needed. But that he does when he winds up with an assignment that has him looking into an urban myth about specters that supposedly haunt Tokyo's subterranean travel system in this fantastical film directed by Takashi Shimizu.
