Guest: Jodi Thomas is a language pathologist and owner of Growing Voices Speech and Language Therapy based in East Valley Phoenix, AZ. Jodi Thomas has training in autism and gestalt language processing and opened her private practice to give children the 1 on 1 attention they deserve.  Interview: There are two ways children develop language: analytical and gestalt. Children with autism often develop language using gestalt, and that requires using a different framework for evaluations and treatment to adequately meet their needs. Gestalt means whole. One key factor that is focused on with gestalt is echolalia. Echolalia is the repetition of another person's spoken word.  Different Types of Echolalia There are three types of echolalia. The first type is immediate echolalia. With immediate echolalia the child will simply follow another person's speech. The second type is delayed echolalia. This type of echolalia tends to happen at a later time and can be produced with no communicative intent. This manner in a way a child communicates is called scripting. This means that the child is repeating words or phrases they're heard from a parent or tv show. The last type is mitigated echolalia. This is where the child will make a change in wording or intonation made by the person that is speaking to him or her. These different types of echolalia are important to appropriately use gestalt language processing to treat a child.  Different Stages of Gestalt Language Processing  Children who develop a gestalt way of language development learn communication phrases in chunks. In stage 1, a child will start by simply mimicking phrases they hear. During this stage, they will repetitively use the phrases they have acquired and will even attempt to copy the tone of voice the original speaker has. In stage 2, a child will start to break down the chunks of phrases they've stored. A child will begin pairing those phrases together and even start to pair them with new words. Oftentimes they will also start to mix and match different echolalia with their phrases. When a child reaches stage 3, they will use two-word combinations with singular words. This can appear like a backslide in their language because the utterances of phrases can become shorter. During stages 4, 5, and 6, a child can self-generate sentences, learn grammar, and begin to answer questions. During all the stages, it's important to validate your child's communication and help them model new phrases to build their gestalt up. During all stages, try not to ask too many questions as it may overwhelm and frustrate your child.  Ways to Model New Gestalt Phrases  A child first needs to learn new phrases that can be broken down when he/she reaches stage 2. Some common mitigated phrases that can help a child do this begin with the words let's, it's, and I'm. Judy Thomas has noticed that many speech therapists try to use phrases that begin with “I want,” and this phrase can cause a child to get stuck in their development. The goal is for a child to create spontaneous utterances and not just memorize phrases. The best time to help a child model new phrases is during natural child child-led play.  Recap: Don't ignore your child's echolalia. This is an important part of how your child communicates by learning the meaning behind your child's use of phrases will help move development along.  Model back-and-forth phrases through natural play to make learning fun for your child. Remember not to ask too many questions that may frustrate your child and cause him/her to shut down. Walk through the steps of the gestalt learning process appropriately with the help of a speech therapist.  Resources: https://www.growingvoicestherapy.com https://www.facebook.com/growingvoicestherapy  https://www.instagram.com/growingvoices.speech/  https://www.meaningfulspeechregistry.com https://www.meaningfulspeech.com/blog/twotypesoflanguagedevelopment   Subscribe Now & Leave a Review Apple Podcasts, Spotify,  Google Podcast, &  Stitcher Visit our Website www.pureheartstherapy.com Follow Us: Facebook: Pure Hearts Therapy Facebook Group: Autism Family Resource Instagram: Purehearts_Therapy

In honor of Autism Awareness Month, Scarlett has a candid conversation with her friend, Judy Thomas, who is an advocate for autism. Judy shares her son Lyle's journey after he was diagnosed with a pervasive development disorder. She defines the disability disorder, shares Lyle's experiences in school, and points out the need for change in the school system to better serve children who have autism or other developmental condition. Since these disorders can impact a person's social skills, ability to communicate and form meaningful relationships, and more, Scarlett also reinforces the need for schools to teach essential life skills and attitudes. Judy explains how tough it is on parents and offers advice on ways they can help their children flourish and live an independent life with hope and positivity. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jesse-lewis-choose-love-m/message

Welcome back to Troubled, a podcast by/for Survivors of Institutional Youth Abuse. THANK YOU for being here for the third season of our Independent self archival project. Two seasons bootlegged together over a cell phone, recorded in an old Prius wasn't too much for you? Well, masochism may pay off here as we embark on our most personal missions yet and play the cards we've held closest throughout the collective crucible of advocacy in a time of Covid. Super quick 31st birthday catch-up with Amanda Householder, who just filed a lawsuit against her parents, Boyd and Stephanie Householder, owners of Circle of Hope Girls Ranch AND their complicit and culpable cohorts - Agape Boarding School for Boys, Agape Baptist Church and Berean Baptist Church. We won't be getting into the nitty gritty of the details today, out of respect for Amanda, but we HIGHLY recommend you read the Kansas City Star Article "I was born into this." Daughter of Missouri reform school sues parents over abuse" by Judy Thomas and Laura Bauer, two rare gems of journalistic integrity. It is incredibly difficult to find ethical media allies of this caliber and we would just like to thank these women for how they have treated Survivors of Institutional Abuse throughout the last year of consistent coverage in Missouri. We wish they weren't an exception, but we are infinitely grateful they're both committed to exposing this crime against humanity as it plays out in their backyards. Forgive us our ADHD and self-defense, in this and every episode. We look forward to exploring the specific traumas of ourselves and our peers who were forever altered relationally by peer-on-peer attack therapy, but we'll also briefly address it in this update. We hope that Survivors will see other Survivors making moves and taking names as invitations or challenges to do so themselves. We hope that you will join us on the frontlines at every fork in the road. We also understand that for a historically invalidated community, and collectively gaslit community, that it can be triggering to see the mic passed to the next advocate. Often we can feel as if we are being spoken for, or over, or disregarded entirely. But every opportunity for a Survivor to speak, is an opportunity for Survivors to be heard. If we believe that we are stronger together, then we cannot continue to allow our community to reenact our trauma. MANY Survivors are neurodiverse, many of us experience RSD (Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria) - especially since it's the most common symptom of ADHD. Even if we don't have RSD dialing up the perception of rejection, we HAVE been abandoned, excluded, silenced, and otherwise pariah-ed to the point where you don't even need 'confirmation bias' to perceive the world as wholly unsafe, as well as the people in it. I dig it. I'm living in this world with you. PLEASE let us be aware of how we deflect and project ourselves onto the world around us. We cannot move towards an exclusionary policy as we curate our collective movement. Please join us in advocating for youth rights to liberate all kids in cages, from the border, through foster care, to the ToughLove so-called Troubled Teen Industry. Until next time, #iseeyousurvivor and THANK YOU to all of our allies --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/troubled/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/troubled/support

The Show Proem My first podcast episode took an interview my dear friend, Bob Doherty, videotaped with my son, Mike Funk, a couple of months before Mike died in 2002. I took the soundtrack of that VHS tape and overlayed a chat I recorded with Bob in 2018.  Bob and my unusual, deep relationship began when he was my boss at St. Peter's Addiction Recovery Center (listen to last week's episode for a brief description of some of the work we did together). My wife and I became dear friends with Bob.  Bob died on August 3rd of complications of stomach cancer. I grieve. Meeting and working with Bob Doherty 01:39 Bob and I first met when he interviewed me for a job.  I asked him for his references. He laughed (great laugh) and gave me a couple of references that I called. Bob's a good guy, can be challenging, doesn't suffer fools gladly. Bob loved to tell that story whenever he could.  Bob said to me as his Director of Quality Management, you're in the difficult position in that you're the conscience of the company and you want to be liked. How do you navigate that?  He also said that I was an acquired taste.  I told that story as often as I could. Bob was a breath of fresh air. 74 years old,

Mark & Judy Thomas were retired, living rather comfortably, when they felt the call to serve in an incredible way. Their story is fantastic, I don’t want to give away the details. May this episode encourage you to ask, “what might I be able to create?” Impact work is HARD work, it’s often disappointing, but it’s always worth it.

READ THIS KANSAS CITY STAR UPDATE Thank you to everyone who attended and/or support the Right to Rights Rally in Stockton Missouri this past weekend. We will be uploading the rally in it's entirety shortly after the video feed is uploaded to the (anti) COH & Agape YouTube Channel. This episode includes both a BREAKING update on Circle of Hope as well as some BREAKING NEWS on Agape Baptist Boarding School & Ranch for Boys as reported by the Kansas City Star. If you have not yet caught up on the series that Star has been doing regarding multiple Lester Roloff / IFB "Troubled Teen Industry" behavior modification centers, deep dive and catch up. Agape's official response is included in this episode and they're correctly predict that Judy Thomas and the Kansas City Star are the next in line to join the lineage of investigative journalists who have secured Pulitzers for their part in exposing and closing abusive programs. How did the parents of the Agape boys not hear that as a cause for concern? Agape misquoted an ex-staff and Pastor, James Clidence, who will correct the attempt to discredit him himself in this episode. Head over to Preacher Boys Podcast for an upcoming full episode between the Good Pastor and Eric. Agape also attempted to bully trigger the "bitter boys" on the frontlines, forgetting that they're now men. Men who recognize plebian manipulations and refuse to be triggered by petty Troglodytes. Those men will respond for themselves. We are humbled to be a conduit and platform to project the voices of our brave Brothers who walk in the confidence that their Truth will not only serve the Self, but set multitudes of "others" free as we march forward. Also, just to tickle a few twinging taints, we've included a two minute moment from Agape's Live Feed last night (11/18/20). While many of us who were raised, reared, trained and trampled by "Toughlove" may not be personally concerned about the lack of basic resources the Othello boys were afforded in this clip - keep in mind that Agape is now federally authorized to receive alien children. So, pretty sure there are standards of care for youth under Federal care. How do ya'll feel about your tax dollars being used to detain these kids in an unlicensed, unregulated, unaccredited Baptist reform ranch that has decades of abuse charges and only relocated to Stockton in order to flee criminal charges in California in the first place. Who really cares about the boys? #iseeyousurvivor Who cares about Rachael Kellso? A woman in her 30s, adopted from the Philipinnes, until her adopted parents abdicated responsibility by paying for the abuse of the 7 siblings in Agape, COH and other Agape spawned programs until they aged out. However, Rachael was legally committed into the custody of Boyd Househoulder and spent over 13 years at COH until she was "removed so that we couldn't use her against them". Now she is missing and even her biological sister and her attorneys cannot find her. Won't anyone ask #whereisrachaelkellso?? In Edible-Alpha® podcast #78, Tera is joined by Mark and Judy Thomas, co-founders of Garfield Produce Co., an indoor vertical farm and wholesale food operation in Chicago. The “failed retirees” started this for-profit business/social enterprise in 2014 to provide job opportunities for people with employment barriers. Following successful careers—Mark as a newspaper production leader, Judy as a corporate lawyer—the Thomases volunteered at a food bank and shelter in East Garfield Park, one of Chicago's roughest areas. Through their service, they learned that many in this neighborhood struggled to find jobs nearby, especially men who'd been incarcerated. Mark had been wanting to start a business, so they decided to launch an urban hydroponic farm right in this neighborhood, hoping it could open doors for people recently out of prison and ready to build a better life. Given their social mission, the Thomases could've gone the nonprofit route. Instead, they tapped into their business and accounting acumen and made Garfield Produce a for-profit venture. As Mark explained, this ensured a focus on revenue, expenses, bottom line and careful growth and would allow them to share equity with employees if the business proved successful. Tera commended their approach, noting that many urban agriculture entrepreneurs, while well intended, grapple with the business side and don't end up making it. After constructing a food-safe climate-controlled grow room with the help of grants, Mark and Judy determined that microgreens made the most sense to grow. As specialty products, microgreens command a much higher price than commodity produce and appeal to high-end chefs looking for consistent, top-quality supplies. The Thomases' business plan, including their focus on the foodservice channel, worked wonderfully. Garfield Produce amassed a large clientele while providing great job opportunities locally. By the beginning of 2020, the company was finally in the black. Then came COVID-19. When Illinois's governor ordered all restaurants to close in March, Garfield Produce's sales sank 95% overnight. Fortunately, the company received government grants and loans and was selected for the USDA Farmers to Families Food Box program, all of which kept the business alive through the fall. Now, as the pandemic persists and restaurants remain closed or at limited capacity, the company is building up its e-commerce and retail channels to reach more consumers and exploring growing baby greens to appeal to a wider audience. Through it all, Garfield Produce has maintained what Mark called “the best, most self-directed work team I've ever had.” That's high praise, seeing as Mark once oversaw some 7,000 employees. The Thomases have proven that, beyond just giving ex-cons a chance, working closely with them to develop their job skills and practicing open-book management increases employee engagement and teamwork. Mark and Judy are excellent examples of how leading with empathy and emphasizing self-empowerment can transform lives while also benefiting the bottom line.
