“The yard woman” ** cat food is approx $21/ month My shrinking belly was almost gone; I would lose the excess quickly, with the new order of pre workout I was expecting to arrive—then, I could lay off of the MCT oils; within my limited budget, my diet still consisted of too many carbs, and I had become dependent on eating grains and high sugar to supplement with my protein. It had been a rough month, and even sort of a rough year—I wasn't sure yet what to call whatever I was in the process of, but I was in the process of something. I was becoming apathetic, but not yet stagnant— never m complacent and in the very least, not comfortable, which kept calm a sense of guilt which burned within, speaking of how no matter what, I must not deserve it—it being, a happy and fufling, love-filled life. Surely I was some sort of monster who deserved to be punished. The solitude was hardly that in New York City—surrounded play people in very corner and crevice, I never felt alone. At least I was guided by falls and doors which kept out the actual presence of others. I thought I might die having to actually be around someone I didn't like—and I realized, by now, that I really didn't like anyone—maybe not even myself, who I loved dearly, but mostly couldn't beat the thought of. Cream cheese Honey Voters Coconut shreds Dried fruit I work out. Like, a lot. So why do I feel so bad about everything I eat? I keep my cash and cards in a coffee can. I collect dust and random antiques. I just wrote a film but it has no score— Just the words to a song, As time moves on I just dry up. Stock the pantry with collectibles; The cat was coming, but nowhere as of yet to be found. I had everything for him—assuming that it would be a he, and somehow I knew it would be, my companion, just a flutter of happiness with the thoughts of his arrival and presence, however—the calculation that it would take approximately $30 a month to feed him kept me in waiting, calculating that it would be better to first finish what I had started before welcoming anymore sources of dependency, which included my own blood. I was still struggling to find balance in my own torture, the grueling process of becoming a ‘wantable woman' of substance and culture, collecting books and of course, constructing a world in which I could both live and love—in peace, and with what work I had so far done, it had become incomprehensible how much further I would have to move in order to be in the next bracket up—still, how far I had come, with some sort of pride of it all, and yet, humble— down to nothing but coins and crumbs in a figurative sense, which felt more comfortable than any low sum at all. My value was intangible—now began the process of making it all somehow add up. I swallowed my heart with the thought of l a war waging upon those of us who had wandered from other worlds into where I now resided—wherever that was, far from anything I had known before. Such simple luxuries as a couch and a kitchen table had enabled me to double my productivity level to what had at first been beyond even my own imagination— it had seemed all at once to be somehow, some way—under control. Somehow, someway. I wondered if the Cheerios and milk I had ordered would allow me to feel somehow more human than I had; if the peanut butter and jelly would allow me to sit for long periods of time chipping away at my projects without the accompanying shame from the intrusive thoughts which sometimes haunted my world—though I had increased my cardio tenfold, I still struggled with the volume of my thighs and leg muscles, and though … ‘Okay, I work out a lot…' I drifted, unable yet to dress myself— I wondered if I would be attacked at the gym again; it seemed as though last time I had visited the gym during daylight hours, a mob of slow moving, coughing, horribly smelling robot people had descended upon me just to ruin my mood and frame of mind. I had powered through it, but had sense felt impeded, then rearranging my schedule to work out in the middle of the night, and unable to rest knowing that another project had been delayed for months without any steady progression, had extended my working into the daylight hours. Something about the experience had almost traumatized me into a state of paralysis— I didn't mind certain people altogether, however, in large numbers I began to feel suffocated and trapped. I wondered it perhaps I had been attacked politically, having been under isolation and moving below the radar, mostly off the grid. My mind had been somehow altered—and I knew that I was being played with, but not in any way which seemed to be benefiting me… I could not relax for anything, and continued to drift in a faded haze. I wonder what kind of mistake I made. Could I be bought and sold again by rich and powerful and famous men at will? Was there any sense in trying? Will I ever be whole or loved again? Will I ever be worth as much to men As the idea of love is To any of us Would I consider to be moved Into my womb, A woman Would I become someone as worth it To hold, as she was born as Move. Clio the gift-giving muse has come through once again: their indefinite suspension for repeated instances of unsportsmanlike podcasting is lifted, and both of your favorite HAG hosts are back on the court, in their old school shorts and Converse All Stars, podcasting with the same reckless abandon that has won them so many past championships. Some podcasting pundits and doubting Thomases say those championships are in the past, but HAG fans do not despair, because it is in the past where Josh and Chris do their best work. So join them on a victory lap, as your indefatigable HAG hosts run circles around the perils of nationalism and expose the really messed up stories they inspire.

If you believe in people having the opportnity to lead their best lives then you will believe in the power and importance of people - no matter who they are - having a say about how their lives are to be lived. This podcast started with a good mate of mine challenging me on my support of the Australian Voice to Parliament referendum. I say "Vote Yes" - he says "Vote No.." Have a listen and you decide for yourself..  For more resources go to my Facebook page including: The Voice -- UN Declaration on Indigenous People that Australia has committed to.. I draw your attention in particular to Articles 18 to 22.. Exactly what the Voice to Parliament is attempting to do It is the fair, the right, the reasonable, the practical thing to do.. Indigenous People live in two worlds at the same time.. The world of 60,000 years and the world of the past 200 years.. Almost no one in Parliament or the Executive understands the complexities of those two worlds.. Have a look at these Articles 18 to 22.... and make up your own mind.. The choice is yours https://www.ohchr.org/.../Declaration_indigenous_en.pdf     The keyboard discussion on the Voice.. I should be working but a good friend of mine from Melbourne is challenging my position on the Voice.. telling me it is in conflict with Articles 2 and 21 of the UN Charter.... I do appreciate him challenging me as it forces me to dig up the actual facts and data -- so I may as well share it with other 'doubting Thomases..' Without giving away identities.. these are my replies and here are some further resources to help you with your thinking and decision making.. I just read Articles 2 and 21 -- there is no such conflict -- especially Article 21 which talks about the General Assembly -- Article 21 The General Assembly shall adopt its own rules of procedure. It shall elect its President for each session. In talking of the UN -- I draw your attention to the UN Declaration on the rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) -- 2007 -- finally endorsed by Australia which had previously abstained when under a Liberal Government.. The Declaration addresses both individual and collective rights; cultural rights and identity; rights to education, health, employment, language, and others. It outlaws discrimination against indigenous peoples and promotes their full and effective participation in all matters that concern them. https://www.ohchr.org/.../un-declaration-rights.... In particular I draw your attention to this UN Declaration -- https://www.ohchr.org/.../Declaration_indigenous_en.pdf --and in particular Article 18 --   This is what Former High Court Chief Justice Robert French said about the Voice to Parliament -- Low Risk - High Return (as reported in The Financial Review)   https://www.afr.com/.../voice-is-low-risk-but-high-return....   The Voice is a big idea but not a complicated one. It is low risk for a high return. The high return is found in the act of recognition, historical fairness and practical benefit to lawmakers, governments, the Australian people and Australia's First peoples.   French goes on to say -- It rests on the historical status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as Australia's Indigenous people. It does not rest on race. It accords with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, for which Australia voted in 2009. It is consistent with the convention against the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination. Suggestions that it would contravene that convention are wrong.   Robert French AC was chief justice of Australia from 2008-2017. Geoffrey Lindell is Emeritus Professor of Law at the University of Adelaide.   PS: French also made the point that there were loud voices against a referendum for the creation of a Federation of Australia way back in 1898 and 1900 too   PPS: my friend said ATSIC was a disaster and both sides of Parliament said to get rid of it -- here is an analysis from a Professor of Law and Indigenous Studies - https://library.bsl.org.au/.../1/200511_behrendt_atsic.pdf   ATSIC's weaknesses   ATSIC's ability to exercise its functions and meet its aims was impeded by some inherent structural problems. One of the key problems was its lack of executive authority. Under its enabling legislation, ATSIC was given the function to monitor the effectiveness of other agencies, to coordinate the development and implementation of policies and to formulate and implement program proposals. To fulfil this responsibility ATSIC needed the active cooperation and involvement of Commonwealth agencies and State and Territory governments. This in turn required an interface backed by executive authority from the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. This authority was never given to ATSIC and the activities of Prime Minister and Cabinet were often to the contrary to ATSIC's stated policies and intentions.   I am glad my friends challenges made me look deeper..   Only to further my resolve that people far smarter and more experienced that I say The Voice to Parliament is a great, historical, empowering move for our First Nations people who need a seat at the table so their voice can be heard on decisions that impact them. #TheVoice #voteyes

July 3: Saint Thomas the ApostleFirst CenturyFeast; Liturgical Color: RedPatron Saint of doubters and architects‘Perhaps' - the crack in the unbeliever's wall of certaintyAll unbelievers have a type of faith. They firmly believe in God's non-existence and in the weakness, not wisdom, of trusting in a reality greater than oneself. Atheism is a belief system, though its object of faith is obviously not God but other sacrosanct, secular “doctrines.” Yet the unbeliever's secular faith, just like every believer's, is continually tempted by doubt. The unbeliever, whether fixated on a friend's lifeless body in a coffin, dumbstruck while gazing at the vastness of the sea, or just when lying in the dark of night, wonders if he has everything figured out. Although he shows a brave front, the unbeliever secretly doubts. He is not certain. He is threatened. There is always the great “perhaps.” Perhaps, just perhaps…the believer is…right. The atheist is under constant assault from faith, primarily from inside himself. Only when trying to quit religion does he realize, painfully, that the drama of being a man cannot be avoided. He exchanges the uncertainty of belief for the uncertainty of unbelief.Today's saint, known as “Doubting Thomas,” is Christianity's icon of doubt. He loves, serves, and follows the Lord. Upon hearing of the death of Lazarus, Christ decides to go to Judea, where He had previously come under attack. The Apostles are concerned for Christ's safety, but Thomas supports Him, saying, “Let us also go, that we may die with him” (Jn 11:16). Thomas is strong and generous. But he is also a man, so he does what men do—he doubts. Christ's crucifixion was a searing experience for His Apostles, and Thomas doubts that one so cruelly and publicly murdered could be alive. He is told by his co-Apostles that the Lord is risen and has appeared to them. Yet still Thomas doubts. He will only believe if he can place his hands in Christ's very wounds. To satisfy his skepticism, Thomas joins the others and waits patiently on the Sunday after Easter. The risen Lord appears again in the same place. “Peace be with you,” He says to all. And then to Thomas himself, “Put your finger here and see my hands...Do not doubt but believe.” “My Lord and my God!” is all the flabbergasted Thomas can muster in response (Jn 20:24–29). Thomas' simple declaration of faith—“My Lord and my God!”—is whispered by millions of faithful at the consecration at Mass, words of faith forged from the anvil of doubt.Doubt is often the starting point, the context, and the invitation to faith for so many modern doubting Thomases. Yet true doubting leads to true searching. And a true search is not perennially open-ended but risks finding what is sought. Saint Thomas' doubt, his moment of weakness, served a higher purpose when Thomas found what he was looking for. The Son of God said “...the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls…” (Mt 13:45) and “The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground…and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how” (Mk 4:26–27). The kingdom is not the fine pearl. The kingdom is the merchant in search of fine pearls. The kingdom is not the seed. It is the man scattering the seed. The search, the scattering, the effort, the struggle, the journey. These are often the first stages of finding God. Honest, authentic inquiry is god-like. Every legitimate search presupposes, after all, that there is something, or someone, to find. Doubt is the plow that opens the furrow where the seed of faith can fall and germinate. Saint Thomas the Apostle is our guide and patron in understanding how doubt sparks faith. Being absent, he heard. Hearing, he doubted. Doubting, he came. Coming, he touched. Touching, he believed. And believing, he served.Saint Thomas, help all who struggle with belief in God. Through your example and intercession, assist all those overwhelmed by distractions and doubts to come to a well-informed trust in the Father and Lord of all.

This month, Don takes a look at the story of Thomas, the disciple often referred to as “doubting Thomas,” in the gospel according to John. In his reading of this story, Don presents a rather revolutionary interpretation of Thomas and his reaction to the disciples' claim that they have seen their teacher, Jesus. Through his refreshing take on the story, Don invites us to consider the Thomases among us, now. We can question: are we like Thomas? Liam, for one, energetically, if not sadly, claims to be a Thomasite. Give a listen and find out why. Following the discussion, Liam offers a reading - a prayer, in fact - from the Jewish Mishkan T'filah for Travelers, A Reform Siddur (or prayer book).  Produced by the Central Conference of American Rabbis I begin with a prayer of gratitude for all that is holy in my life. God needs no words, no English or Hebrew, no semantics and no services. But I need them. Through prayer, I can sense my inner strength, my inner purpose, my inner joy, my capacity to love. As I reach upward in prayer, I sense these qualities in my Creator. To love God is to love each other, to work to make our lives better. To love God is to love the world God created, and to work to perfect it. To love God is love dreams of peace and joy that illumine all of us and to bring that vision to life. In Trans-Forming Proclamation, Liam Hooper tenderly explores gender and the Bible. This book actually defies genre. With rich patches of poetry, memoir, and devotional, Liam weaves together inspiring literary insights with grounded, original, and informed scholarship. Trans-Forming proclamation: A Transgender Theology of Daring Existence is new wine in a new wine skin. The Story of Doubting Thomas goes to us during Eastertide on the Second Sunday of Easter, as today, this evening in fact, is when Jesus reveals himself to Thomas. But, how often are we "Thomases"? How often do we need just a nudge to come to belief and faith. Father Blackburn explores some of these questions during his sermon this morning. Anchored by Truth from Crystal Sea Books - a 30 minute show exploring the grand Biblical saga of creation, fall, and redempti

Episode 147 – Truth and Proof – Part 7 – Science Points to a Creator Welcome to Anchored by Truth brought to you by Crystal Sea Books. In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” The goal of Anchored by Truth is to encourage everyone to grow in the Christian faith by anchoring themselves to the secure truth found in the inspired, inerrant, and infallible word of God. Script: Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness. 5God called the light “day” and the darkness “night. Genesis, Chapter 1, verses 3 and 4, New Living Translation ******** Hello! I’m Victoria K. Welcome to Anchored by Truth brought to you by Crystal Sea Books. We’re excited to be with you as we continue our series we’ve called “Truth and Proof.” This series is all about the truth that there is a God and that God is the God of the Bible. Furthermore, as we go along we are offering the proof that supports the truth. This series on Anchored by Truth was inspired by a Sunday School lesson series that was prepared and delivered by Dr. Gregg Alexander. Today we’re fortunate to have Dr. Gregg Alexander back on the show with us. He’s going to help us explore one of the best known lines of reasoning that demonstrates God’s existence: the cosmological argument. But before we get into the meat of the show, GREGG would you like to take a couple of minutes and tell us a little about why you decided you wanted to do your “Truth and Proof” series for your Sunday School class? GREGG: - Introductory comments - VK: So, I’d like to remind everyone that the reason we have undertaken this series is to help listeners know how to defend the Christian faith. This defense is often termed “apologetics.” Lay people will sometimes think that apologetics as an area of study is beyond the reach of regular Christians. But we certainly don’t believe that it is. Any reasonably mature, thinking Christian can readily understand the lines of reasoning that demonstrates that the existence of God is a logical necessity to have a coherent world view. And when we speak of defending the Christian faith we’re not thinking of people going out and debating on a stage somewhere. The first place we must defend our faith is in our own hearts. The second place that we must defend it is in our own homes. If all we ever did with apologetics was do those two things any efforts we made would be well worth while. GREGG: I agree. 10, 20, or 30 years ago we lived in a culture that readily accepted Christianity even if some individuals did not. 50 years ago you would even find some support for the Christian world view taught in grade schools and high schools because the truth of Christianity was widely accepted. But those days are long behind us. Our broader culture is no longer not only not acquiescent to Christianity but it is outright hostile to it. And some elements of our society are vehemently hostile. We have entered one of those periods of history where Christians can no longer be complacent that we just worship in our churches and things will be all right. The opposition to Christianity enters every home, every day if in no other way through the internet and the so-called mainstream media outlets. Arguments against the validity of Christianity are all around us. If we do not actively prepare to counter them the fabric of our society will continue to erode. VK: But the good news is that it does not have to be that way, does it? We have the truth on our side but we must equip ourselves to be able to present that truth. It is not up to us to change anyone’s heart. That’s God’s job. Our job is just to be able to witness to the truth in gentle and respectful ways. GREGG: As I said last time I was on Anchored by Truth, that there is nothing more important than our faith in God and not just any God but the God of the Bible. A correct understanding of God is the difference between an eternity in heaven or an eternity in hell. Those are pretty high stakes.. VK: But the good news is that it does not have to be that way, does it? We have the truth on our side but we must equip ourselves to be able to present that truth. It is not up to us to change anyone’s heart. That’s God’s job. Our job is just to be able to witness to the truth in gentle and respectful ways. Well, let’s do a very brief review of one of the major points that we discussed last time – a proof for God’s existence that you call the “metaphysical proof.” The metaphysical proof for God’s existence begins quite simply with the observation that we exist. And we know that we exist as contingent, dependent creatures. GREGG: And because we are dependent creatures we know we must depend on someone or something outside ourselves for our origin and for our continued existence. But that chain of dependency cannot go on forever. Somewhere there must be a Being that caused the origin of contingent beings and provides the resources or elements upon which they are dependent. We call that Being a Necessary Being. The Necessary Being must be uncaused and independent and therefore must be infinite because He existed before anything else. As such, there was nothing and no one who could place limits on him. And, when we look more closely we see that we possess the attributes of personality, rationality, and morality. The only possible reason we can possess such attribute is if the Necessary Being possessed them first. VK: The irresistible conclusion from this line of reasoning is that the Necessary Being satisfies all the qualities of a theistic God. He is self-existent, infinite, uncaused, personal, rational, and moral. So, the metaphysical proof for God is one way of demonstrating that God is – for lack of a better term – “necessary” to explain the universe we see around us. But, Dr. Alexander, you said that today you wanted to offer another line or argumentation that also demonstrates this same point. GREGG: Yes. Today, I want to move on to a look at the cosmological proof for God’s existence. The cosmological argument for the existence of God is probably the best known of all the many arguments that are used. The Cosmological Argument is an argument from consideration of the beginning of the universe – it comes from the Greek word cosmos meaning “universe, world.” There are two forms of the argument. The first says that the cosmos or universe needed a cause at its beginning, the second form argues that it needs a cause to continue existing. The first form is called the horizontal argument because it proceeds along the time line from the beginning. It is also called the kalam (Arabic: “eternal”) cosmological argument: the universe is not eternal, so it must have had a Cause. That Cause must be considered God. This argument has a long and venerable history even outside Christianity. For instance, there are Islamic philosophers such as Alfarabi and Avicenna who have been strong advocates for it. So, today I want to take a look at some of the scientific evidence that supports this form of the cosmological argument, i.e., it is evidence that reasons back to a Cause of the beginning of the universe. VK: Well, just to be sure that we are being clear for the listeners the Cosmological Argument for the existence of God goes like this: 1. The universe had a beginning. 2. Anything that had a beginning must have been caused by something else. 3. Therefore the universe was caused by something else - a Creator. GREGG: Yes. And to help us keep organized as we go through a discussion of some of the scientific evidence I want to use the 5 letter acronym “SURGE” to make these categories of evidence easier to remember. The “S” is Newton’s Second Law of Thermodynamics. The “U” is for the universe which is expanding. The “R” is for the radiation echo from space, more technically known as “microwave background radiation.” The “G” is for Great Galaxy Seeds. The “E” is for Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity. Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity was the beginning of the end for the idea that the universe is eternal. The theory has been verified to five decimal places, and it demands an absolute beginning for time, space, and matter. From General Relativity came the discoveries of the expanding universe, the radiation echo, and the great galaxy seeds. VK: And again, just to be clear, today there is no way in the brief time that we have allotted to each of these shows that we can cover all the material that is relevant to the cosmological argument. There are a great many allied issues that pertain to the issue of the origin and operation of the cosmos that we simply don’t have time to get into today. These are issues that are relevant to the general discussion of the validity of the Bible and the historicity of Genesis in particular – but they are outside the scope of today’s discussion. : GREGG: I agree. But just to illustrate your point let’s look at a scenario. Suppose someone were to say to you, “there’s no such thing – or person – as God; the universe has always been here; why does there need to be a ‘creator’?” Carl Sagan once said, ‘the cosmos is all that is or ever was or ever will be.’ VK: Then I might reply “what about the Big Bang? What about all the scientists who have accepted it as a fact, and have gone from that point to trying to figure out the age of the earth? Afterall, the mere fact that scientists are trying to establish the age of the universe tells us they don’t think it eternal.” GREGG: Then our hypothetical atheist might say, “But I just can’t accept all that Bible stuff – especially the Genesis stuff that says the universe is only six or seven thousand years old – that’s ridiculous – everyone knows there were dinosaurs on earth from about 120 million years ago to about sixty million years ago; where’s all that in your Bible? – isn’t that proof that the Bible is nothing more than a story – probably a myth – maybe a hoax?” VK: Then after reading your Sunday School notes I might reply, “That brings up some interesting questions. For instance, when it comes to dating the age of the earth many people are familiar with the process of using uranium and plutonium degradation to assign a date to the earth’s age. Many people may also have heard about potassium-argon dating or carbon-14 dating. All of these have been used extensively. But what most people don’t know is that when they have been used they come up with variable and inconsistent conclusions. Yet, there is another method - helium diffusion dating – that has its foundation in research from the 1970’s and was the work of a group of very reputable scientists. And helium diffusion dating shows the universe to be about six thousand years old. GREGG: And that is the whole reason I write those notes – to help people understand that some of the issues that people see as being settled are, in fact, very much still in doubt. To my knowledge helium diffusion dating has never been proven wrong. Furthermore, there was a leg bone of Tyrannosaurus Rex unearthed in 1990 and studied at the University of Montana. This particular leg bone was not only found to not be fully fossilized, but had blood cells and hemoglobin fragments remaining in it! How a bone that is supposed to be 60 million years old still has visible blood cells and hemoglobin is a complete mystery to scientists. But it is not a mystery if the bone is thousands of years old and not millions. The point of this scenario is to illustrate that many of the issues that people point to that they believe invalidate the Bible do not do so at all. But these are really peripheral questions that we can discuss some other time. The main question is whether or not the universe had a beginning, and the argument against there being a beginning is not only with the Bible, but with virtually all secular scientists. VK: And that’s an important point. The most widely accepted theory of the origin of the universe today is undoubtedly the so-called “Big Bang” theory. The Big Bang theory hypothesizes that about 14 to 16 billion years ago there was a truly cosmic explosion – the Big Bang – that created all the structures that we currently see around us in the universe. Now not all scientists agree with the Big Bang theory as the best explanation for the origin of the cosmos but it is the dominant theory today. So, what we are going to do next is proceed with an analysis of how even the Big Bang theory points to the fact that, if it were true, the universe had a beginning in space and time. This does not mean that we are agreeing with the validity of the theory. We are merely demonstrating that even by secular science’s most accepted hypothesis it is inescapable that the universe is not eternal. Now, when many secular scientists are asked what caused the Big Bang they just sort of shrug their shoulders or they dismiss the question as being irrelevant. But, of course, the question is not irrelevant at all. GREGG: No. It is not. But for today we’re going to confine ourselves to demonstrating that even if we were to accept the Big Bang theory we still find out that the universe cannot be eternal. In our last episode of Anchored by Truth we introduced the acronym SURGE to organize five categories of evidence that show that the universe had a start in space and time. So let’s look again at the S-U-R-G-E acronym for evidence of a beginning of the universe. VK: The “S” in SURGE stands for Newton’s Second Law of Thermodynamics. According to the second law of thermodynamics - in a closed, isolated system, such as the universe is - the amount of usable energy is constantly decreasing. Or, simply put, the universe is running out of power. Therefore, it cannot be eternal. Otherwise, it would have run out of usable energy long ago. GREGG: Exactly right. Things left to themselves, without outside intervention, tend toward disorder because of the decline in energy – the law of “entropy” [symbol S in physics, appropriately] which is a measure of the unavailability to do work, i.e., the tendency of a closed system toward disorder. Since the universe has not reached a state of total disorder, then this process has not been going on forever. The fact that the universe still has an abundance of usable energy tells us that the universe cannot be eternally old. VK: The “U” in SURGE is for the universe which is expanding. GREGG: Right. In 1916 Albert Einstein didn’t like where his theory of General Relativity was taking him. He was “irritated” that his calculations were indeed revealing that the universe was not eternal but had a beginning, i.e., all time, all space, and all matter had a starting point. History records how he tried to “fudge” his numbers by introducing a “constant” in order to show that the universe is static and to avoid the issue of a beginning. But in 1929 he looked through Edwin Hubble’s telescope and he could no longer avoid the obvious: the universe was indeed expanding. VK: And I believe that the evidence that the universe is indeed expanding is often referred to as the “redshift.” GREGG: Yes. The so-called redshift is an apparent displacement of the light waves coming from distant galaxies toward the longer wavelengths, i.e., toward the red end of the visible spectrum. This is usually interpreted as a “Doppler effect” resulting from the recession of the galaxies along the line of sight. The Doppler effect is the apparent change in the observed frequency of a wave as a result of relative motion between a source and an observer, e.g., the sound made by a low-flying aircraft as it approaches an observer is different from the sound made as it passes and flies away because of “compression” of the sound waves as it approaches, and “expansion” of the sound waves as it moves away. The redshift indicates that the distance between the galaxies is continuously increasing, i.e., the universe is continuously expanding. VK: Does the “redshift” tell us anything else? GREGG: Well, it told Einstein that his General Theory of Relativity was correct – much to his own disappointment. Dutch astronomer Willem de Sitter discovered that Einstein’s theory of General Relativity, if correct, required the universe to be expanding which meant it couldn’t be eternal. The rate at which the velocity of recession of the galaxies increases with distance as determined by the redshift is expressed as the Hubble constant. The reciprocal of the Hubble constant, the Hubble time, is a measure of the age of the universe, assuming that the rate of expansion has remained constant. The rate of expansion of the universe, whether speeding up or slowing down, is not fully agreed upon, but it seems likely that the gravitational attraction between the galaxies would result in slowing down the rate of expansion with time. So, there are some unknowns associated with an expanding universe but the one element that is not in debate is that it points to a universe that is not eternal. VK: And, again after reviewing your Sunday School series, the “R” in SURGE is for the radiation echo from space, more technically known as “microwave background radiation.” By 1948 three scientists had predicted that this radiation would be in space if the so-called Big Bang actually occurred. And in 1965 two scientists at Bell Labs, Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson, detected cosmic radiation that was coming at them from all directions. This discovery was huge because it confirmed the presence of heat and light radiation that would be the expected afterglow from the fireball of the gigantic Big Bang explosion. GREGG: Right. The light waves from the Big Bang are no longer visible because the wavelengths have been stretched by the expanding universe to wavelengths slightly shorter than those produced by a microwave oven. This was the nail in the coffin for any lingering hope that the universe is in an eternal steady state. Astronomer Robert Jastrow said this: “The discovery of the remnant of the primordial fireball radiation made a deep impression on astronomers. After this discovery, support for the Steady State theory weakened although some astronomers still favored it. The clincher, which has convinced all but a few doubting Thomases, is that the radiation discovered by Penzias and Wilson shows the characteristic pattern of intensities at different wavelengths and frequencies of radiation that matches the pattern of the radiation produced in an explosion … The idea of a universe that came into being abruptly is distasteful to the scientific mind. Yet the evidence for the expanding universe is too clear to be ignored.” VK: And, the “G” is for Great Galaxy Seeds. If the Big Bang actually occurred, scientists believed that we should see slight variations, or “ripples” in the temperature of the cosmic background radiation. These ripples would allow matter to congregate by gravitational attraction into galaxies. In 1989 the search for these ripples was initiated by the satellite called COBE for Cosmic Background Explorer. GREGG: Yes. The findings from COBE were announced in 1992 and were so incredible that Stephen Hawking called them “the most important discovery of the century, if not of all time.” What were the findings? Not only were the ripples discovered, but the ripples show that the explosion and expansion of the universe was so precise as to cause just enough matter to congregate as to allow for galaxy formation, i.e., to form “seeds,” but not enough to cause the universe to collapse back on itself. Any slight variation either way and biological life as we know it would not have been possible. The lead astronomer of the project, George Smoot, called the findings the “fingerprints of the maker.” COBE documented the presence of incredible energy seeds, the largest of which extends across one-third of the known universe. VK: And the “E” in SURG E is for Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity. This was the beginning of the end for the idea that the universe is eternal. The theory has been verified to five decimal places, and it demands an absolute beginning for time, space, and matter. From General Relativity came the discoveries of the expanding universe, the radiation echo, and the great galaxy seeds. GREGG: Right. Astronomer Robert Jastrow said this in an interview with Christianity Today: “Astronomers now find they have painted themselves into a corner because they have proven, by their own methods, that the world began abruptly in an act of creation to which you can trace the seeds of every star, every planet, every living thing in this cosmos and on the earth. And they have found that this happened as a product of forces they cannot hope to discover . . . That there are what I or anyone would call supernatural forces at work is now, I think, a scientifically proven fact.” VK: Now I would like to clarify something for the benefit of our audience. Today we have been speaking of the origin of the universe using the conventions that are most commonly used in scientific circles today such as “Big Bang.” But we would like to point out that there are competent scientists, both Christian and non-Christian, who would disagree with idea of a “Big Bang.” They would not disagree that empirical observations point to a beginning for the universe. But they look at the same evidence that used to support the Big Bang theory and interpret it differently. GREGG: Right. That’s a very important note. The scientific evidence for the Cosmological Argument addresses the first premise in the argument, i.e., “The universe had a beginning.” We’ve used the SURGE acronym to make it easy to organize five categories of evidence from secular science that can be used to prove there was a beginning – usually called the “Big Bang” by the secular scientists. But as you’ve noted, not all astrophysicists are so secular, and some have postulated theories based on sound science that sound very biblical, using terms like “the deep” (Genesis 1:2), “the expanse” (1:6), and the six days of Creation. In our last episode I mentioned two books that provide alternate interpretations. The conclusions of the authors on the major question are the same. The universe had a beginning. But their understanding of the mechanics are different. The books I would direct you to are Starlight and Time by D. Russell Humphreys (Master Books, 1994), and the follow-up by the same author entitled Thousands, not Billions. VK: When we began this discussion of the cosmological argument we said there are two forms of the cosmological argument. Thus far we have only looked at the first of the two. The first says that the cosmos or universe needed a cause at its beginning. The second form argues that it needs a cause to continue existing. The first form is called the horizontal argument because it proceeds along the time line from the beginning. The second form of the cosmological argument is called the vertical cosmological argument, and it doesn’t reason from a beginning but from the being of the universe as it now exists. But whichever form of the argument is used, the scientific evidence that we have been talking about supports the cosmological argument. It is evidence that reasons back to a Cause of the beginning of the universe. GREGG: And this kind of evidence can be effective in helping bring people to the truth. For instance, as we mentioned last time, Jastrow started out as an agnostic but he came around to the fact that the nature of the universe persuaded him that the universe needed a creator. VK: Well, we hope everyone will join us next time as we continue this fascinating discussion about the arguments and evidence that demonstrates that there is a firm basis in logic and reason for our Christian faith. This sounds like a great time to go to God in prayer. Today let’s listen to a prayer for our friends. Good friends are a blessing from God and we should all take time regularly to pray for God’s mercy and favor to be with them. ---- PRAYER FOR FRIENDS VK: We’d like to remind our audience that a lot of our radio episodes are linked together in series of topics so if they missed any episodes or if they just want to hear one again, all of these episodes are available on your favorite podcast app. To find them just search on “Anchored by Truth by Crystal Sea Books.” If you’d like to hear more, try out crystalseabooks.com where “We’re not famous but our Boss is!” (Bible Quote from the New Living Translation) Genesis, Chapter 1, verses 3 and 4, New Living Translation

Few of my ancestors' genealogies are as contentious as my 10x great-grandfather, Colonel Thomas Pettus, born abt 1598 in England (either London or the County of Norfolk). His lineage has sparked fierce debates among American genealogists for two centuries. One of the problems is the sheer volumes of Thomases in the Pettus family. It is incredibly easy to get them confused. Then there is the debate about whether he married Ko Oke "Jane" Powhatan, a daughter of Matoake (better known as Pocahontas) and her first husband, Kocoum. While there is a European-descended researcher group who have challenged the marriage between Ko Oke and Thomas Pettus, 3 different Virginian Native American tribes have not only claimed this lineage down the ages, it verges on the sacred among them. I'm going to admit bias towards the Native Americans' claim. For who would have better knowledge of Native American history than Native Americans? This too has been supported by researchers William Strachey, historian at Jamestown, and Bill Deyo, the tribal historian of the Patawomeck tribe. These are two men who know the early colonial history of Virginia. Putting that contentious issue to one side, the next question that surrounds Thomas Pettus is straightforward: who were his parents? The Thomases' business plan, including their focus on the foodservice channel, worked wonderfully. Garfield Produce amassed a large clientele while providing great job opportunities locally. By the beginning of 2020, the company was finally in the black. Then came COVID-19. When Illinois's governor ordered all restaurants to close in March, Garfield Produce's sales sank 95% overnight. Fortunately, the company received government grants and loans and was selected for the USDA Farmers to Families Food Box program, all of which kept the business alive through the fall. Now, as the pandemic persists and restaurants remain closed or at limited capacity, the company is building up its e-commerce and retail channels to reach more consumers and exploring growing baby greens to appeal to a wider audience. Through it all, Garfield Produce has maintained what Mark called “the best, most self-directed work team I've ever had.” That's high praise, seeing as Mark once oversaw some 7,000 employees. The Thomases have proven that, beyond just giving ex-cons a chance, working closely with them to develop their job skills and practicing open-book management increases employee engagement and teamwork. Mark and Judy are excellent examples of how leading with empathy and emphasizing self-empowerment can transform lives while also benefiting the bottom line.

In this episode, we sit down with Trent and Sam Thomas an interracial couple from Owasso, Oklahoma. This episode is raw, vulnerable, sarcastic, funny, and passionate. We know that sounds like a lot- and it is! Trent and Sam live in a suburb that is mostly Caucasian, and we discuss how the racial tension of 2020 has impacted their relationships and daily reality of being in a predominantly White community. Trent shares his experiences with and his observations of the political climate found in many White Christian circles, and Sam responds to a commonly asked questioned of “What do we do now?” This episode might leave you excited, nervous, squeamish or more passionate than others, but if nothing else, it will leave you challenged to think! The book that Trent mentions is White Awake by Daniel Hill Samantha's guest post that she wrote for Everyday Boldness is found here.

Meet the director. Larry Burden  1:19  Welcome to the district. Evan O'Branovic  1:20  Thank you.  Larry Burden  1:21  Before we get started, I'd like to take a moment and on behalf of the district make a blanket apology for Thomas, just in general, just in general. Besides that, what do you think so far.  Evan O'Branovic  1:33  I have been extremely impressed so far, coming in from a much smaller district. So, just the pure size and scope and sequence of everything that happens here is quite incredible.  Larry Burden  1:46  Overwhelming or more like well I can't wait to get my hands on all these...  Evan O'Branovic  1:50  Oh, both, yeah. Larry Burden  1:51  Cool toys. Evan O'Branovic  1:52  We've had plenty of overwhelming moments coming home, looking at my wife like, we're not in Aspen anymore. And then, but it's an extremely exciting opportunity as well so I think that's been kind of what saves those overwhelming moments is feeling like wow there's a lot that I can dig my hands into and the staff around me is incredible so it's been very exciting in that aspect.  Larry Burden  2:14  What brought you to Traverse City. Evan O'Branovic  2:15  Well, I grew up downstate. So I'm from Michigan, the mitten, you know, originally and went to Michigan State, go green,  Larry Burden  2:25  Go blue,  Evan O'Branovic  2:25  yeah, I know I found that division up here, which is always good. And then I graduated with my degree in elementary education, decided that Michigan was not the place for me and took off out west. Never been to Colorado before but decided that was my time and ended up landing kind of your dream gig in Aspen, Colorado teaching fourth grade. So I did that for six years, convinced my now wife, then girlfriend to come out with me. She's a teacher as well. And then I got my Masters in educational technology, was pursued by my old Tech Director to become a Tech Integrator, found that extremely exciting, rewarding kind of where I wanted to be. And then was always kind of on the lookout for grandiose opportunities to come back to the home state. And so, when I saw this come up, it was something that I had to at least throw my hat in the ring for. And surprisingly, they picked me, which was very exciting and, and then just kind of made the call home and told our parents that were making the move. And like I said before, kind of, for me, being such a big place in terms of just like the scope of how many schools, and the amount of students, and what all happens here. When I got a chance to speak with, you know, staff and see the team that's in place, my final interview was actually flying out here, and kind of checking everything out, it really made that, that size not seem like such an obstacle that I couldn't overcome and so it was really comforting and kind of made that decision for me to take you know a step out of my comfort zone and do something a little bit bigger than myself and so yeah. So far I'm very happy with this decision, but we're only a month and a half in. Danelle Brostrom  4:11  So what are the trends you see in technology? You know you've been in tech for a while, and, and Ed tech specifically for a while. What kinds of things do you see happening?  Evan O'Branovic  4:20  You know that's, that's been pretty interesting. From my perspective, I think what you'll find too is, is always that everyone has their two cents and what's tech shifting every so often and in multitude of directions, it's hard to really pinpoint it. And that's one of the exciting yet frustrating things about working with it to me. What I've noticed is mobile centric, meaning, just everything's got to be mobile to use. Can we use our phones, can we use tablets smaller devices. You know what, what in that mobile format can be applied to what we're trying to do because no one wants to waste time with, with computers anymore. In the sense of our big laptops, you know, which is pretty funny thinking how these things are, it's just, it's too heavy, I don't want to carry it with me. But I can have my phone. Can I do it on my phone? And I think our students, you know are the prime example of that. Teachers, were still in the transition but. So yeah, anything mobile, but then as we look at new devices, and you know the laptops, we're going to bring to the staff hopefully this year. It's what devices are touchscreen, which ones are small, and portable and easy to carry. Which ones can flip over into tablet mode. So those to me are just kind of, that's become the trend. What, what can get from point A to point B very easily. What can I pull out and work out on the fly. And so anything that drives to that point, I think is always, you know, kind of, you know, an excitement for people. They look at it, even if it may not be that great of a device, but if it's smaller, it's more mobile, it always will get a second look.  Evan O'Branovic  5:48  And then connectivity is big. Wi-Fi is water, at this point in our lives as we know. When the Wi-Fi went out last week, so.  Danelle Brostrom  5:57  Old fashion day is cool. Evan O'Branovic  5:58  Old fashion day is cool and everyone gets, you know, real worked up about it because it is like you turned off their water supply. And, and I had several people, when I was doing a school tour that morning when it happened go. Should we just have Wi-Fi days, should we should we not have school if the internet's not there. And I'm like, that has become the first thought right. Can we even do what we need to do if the Wi Fi is not accessible which I think most of us who are a little bit older and came into it as a transition period where like, like you said, it's old fashioned day. So yeah, to me, the connectivity is huge and that goes for a lot of different things too. So, you know, whether it's to the internet, or just, you know, in the classroom setting to me it's always finding interesting how people perceive how they're connecting, meaning to like a display to showcase their class, or to their other students. You know, are those devices easily connectable? Can I bring up a student's screen and show what they're doing? Can I put my screen very easily up on the projector, TV, SMART Board whatever it's going to be? But whatever it is, does it work really quickly and can I do it without really having to have any sort of learning curve? So any devices and tools we can find that do that more simply, I think are home runs.  Evan O'Branovic  7:10  And then simple as best. I think as things have become more complicated, the less clicks someone has to do, the less work. If I don't have to read a manual and it'll auto set up for me, if it'll connect to that display for me, if the Wi Fi runs by itself, I love it. If it doesn't, and it takes a little digging, you know, with this world everything needs to be faster, quicker, more on point then it just becomes an instant point of frustration for someone who may not be as apt to look into that, and so, you know, what's simplest. But that goes for the tools that the teachers and students are using to. How many clicks does a kid need to use to get into that, you know, curriculum device or whatever the teachers using. And what kind of information do they have to share? I think that's become a big thing to. Do I have to give an email, a password and home address? Forget it, I don't know that kind of time. But if I just need an email and a password great, let's knock it out of the park. Or what kind of information do I need to give, which is a good thing people are becoming more aware of, you know what they're sharing and who has access to that. But that becomes a huge roadblock. And then I think there's a huge piece, from parents, students, Old Guard Teachers, Administrators, of less is more. Too much screen time, too much time on the device, are they really being used purposefully, which I agree with to some point. And so it's really a thoughtful consideration, I think going back to that purpose for use. How are we using it, and just because we have computers and we slap our kids in front of them is that mean they're really learning? Are they doing anything innovative? That's definitely not always the case, and I think you're just seeing that from everybody. Now it comes in different forms. So you'll have, you know, parents are very apt on one side of just, usually it's screen time. How much screen time is my kid getting, and hopefully getting them to ask the right questions of, screen time can be a question but it's, is it purposeful time? If it is, then it's probably worth them sitting down for a little while and using that device. But if they're just kind of doing facts or simple things that can be done in old fashioned day, then, yeah, I think less is more. We don't need to use technology for technology's sake. So that to me has been just kind of a big pickup and something from my role back in Colorado to what I'm seeing here is just the justification and or just the thoughtful use of that technology so that it's being used purposely.  Danelle Brostrom  9:30  Fits right into the ISTE Standards and the Triple E Framework stuff that we're really trying to push in this district.  Evan O'Branovic  9:35  Absolutely.  Danelle Brostrom  9:36  Create over consume.  Evan O'Branovic  9:37  Yes, yes creation to me is, is absolutely key. It's something that I think often gets overlooked. And it's, because it's not easy. It's not easy to have anyone, whether it's from the teacher level all the way down to the student, really try and create something, or look at how they're, they're creating or thinking, you know, a little bit broader than just accomplishing a task. It's always about tying a lot of things together, and you know, that always takes work so. That's tough for teachers, but that's where you're going to get meaningful connections. That's where the learning is going to happen. That's where I think it becomes very easy to justify having your kids on a piece of technology, your students on a device. Because of what the end product is, and the fact that it wasn't just for one simple, you know, task. They didn't just practice math facts. They created, you know, a website explaining a multitude of math concepts that they work together with, but that's not easy. So it takes a lot of work and that's the hard part for sure.  Danelle Brostrom  10:33  And a lot of time.  Larry Burden  10:34  So with time. One of the things that we do struggle with, you know, the kids like the mobile devices, the teachers like the mobile devices, everybody likes mobile devices. Yet, I know we, we struggle at the secondary levels with, maybe, misuse. We want them to be creative. We don't want them to be distracted. How do we, I guess, navigate that balancing act?  Evan O'Branovic  10:55  Yeah, that's a tough one. I don't think there's a, there are necessarily a sure fast answer to, this is how you make sure all your. Larry Burden  11:02  Figure it all out. No one's, no one's.  Evan O'Branovic  11:04  Here's the button to press. That's what everyone wants. Which is always tough, you know. What button can I press? What, I feel like in that same, what app can I give my students so they can't do anything else? Right? What locks down the device? And to me, that's that's asking or approaching it from the wrong angle. So if we're worried about them, you know, we need to force them into this one spot, then, what the activity you're doing is not engaging enough. And that's a lot of ask for the teachers as well. So there's, I'm not trying to downplay what their job is, and that and how they're supposed to do that. But it's really, it starts with people like Danelle and that curriculum, the instructional side of how are you utilizing your mobile device, your laptops, your computers, any sort of technology, to be engaging with the students and making it purposeful. And I would hope in my experience, which has not been long, but with Danielle and David and our other team, our instructional team is, they have that opinion of, if it's not, then don't use it. And that's not to say you just throw it away in the garbage. But you really need to be like, it's okay to step away. I don't need to use this cool new thing all the time just for the sake of using it. So, it's going to take some work I think I'm changing just a mentality of a teacher, of the time, like Danielle mentioned, it would take to, you know, create something that's truly engaging, and how that would be implemented, and what that looks like. And then, you know, contingency plans. So, when it doesn't work, what are you going to do then? Because it's not going to work. I just always like to run under that assumption. It's gonna break. It's going to break probably in the middle of the most important part. And my favorite statement that I've had so far here in the district is, "oh yeah, we were working on that but then technology didn't work." And I'm like, Oh, well that's a bummer. I'm really disappointed that it didn't work. But that's a really broad term. So you know more specific is great but just, that's going to happen, you know, so I try and very kindly redirect that in the sense of, it absolutely it's just not going to work. We can't rely on it because, like I said, it's always changing, it's new things that we're trying to do are usually on the cutting edge, which is great. So you have to plan for a different way to approach it. And so that's kind of the way with that mobile device thing. It can become an absolute distraction and just detraction from what's happening in the classroom and so you either have to spend a lot of time, and I think even if you do, to plan something meaningful you might find that happening. And if that's happening, you need a parachute. How you going to bail out?  Larry Burden  13:39  What's your plan B?  Evan O'Branovic  13:40  What's your plan B?  Danelle Brostrom  13:41  I want to high five that answer because I think that I hear that on a weekly basis. How can I block my kids from YouTube? How can I keep my kids just on the one website that I want them to go on? And I think, like, as an adult, you have to learn how to balance all of this, and the phone, and just everything. And I think if we never K-12, talk to our kids about how to balance, and what that feels like, and that you struggle with it to. You just kind of send them off and then they don't know how to do it. I don't feel like you can lock everything down.  Evan O'Branovic  14:15  You can't lock everything down. And if that is your solution to everything then, again, I think just like you spoke to, you're not preparing them for the next level. And that's, you know, I think what everyone touts and everyone is truly deeply meaning to do so. You want to hopefully bring that conversation back around to them and be like, if we want to prepare them for college, no one's going to say, their professors not going, How can I lock them into this app, you can take all those quizzes with your friends next to you and multiple tabs open. So, is that really the goal, is that where we're moving towards? Because that puts a level of complication, onus on, you know, the people say, Thomas to crank things down in a way that becomes I just think unsustainable. You can't, you can't do it. And then again, it's one more thing to break. So you really have to be careful on that balance of, of how much control you want to have versus how much knowledge, skill set, practice you want to impart on those students and teachers to, to just do the tasks that they're trying to do or make meaningful ones, so that people just are naturally engaged in it. You don't have to keep refocusing them because chances are, unfortunately, that might not be the most best use of that time in that lesson. So having that reflection time is huge. And being able to, I guess, except that it was a dud. It's got to be okay I think especially in technology.  Larry Burden  15:40  You have to be willing to fail. The teacher has to be willing to fail. It's an opportunity to actually model that with a lesson. Sometimes I have, I have this great idea. Didn't work, let's...  Evan O'Branovic  15:51  Right,  Larry Burden  15:51  let's move on.  Evan O'Branovic  15:52  Yeah, because it will not work, it will, it will not work. Larry Burden  15:56  We would like to get to the point, we talked about this a lot, is, you know, the hope that technology just becomes a tool. It's not even "technology" anymore. It's just, you know, one of many tools. And we're going back to that engagement piece and locking everything down. It's like taking the head off a hammer. Suddenly, it's not a useful tool anymore. Yes. Yeah. The head is the part that's going to hurt you, as well. But if you can instruct the, the educator and the student on the proper use. That would be the more beneficial route to take as opposed to making it no longer tool,  Danelle Brostrom  16:30  And the task design, I think that's a big part of this. Have really engaging tasks that draw kids in. Rather than just the lower level recall kind of stuff. That's what's going to keep kids where they need to be.  Evan O'Branovic  16:41  They just need an emphasis on that, from the top on down of, I think like Daniel mentioned, the time that's involved in that. It's a lot. So to think that you can do that in a 30 minute prep period, it's just not going to happen and that's okay. So hopefully we can start to, you know, as this becomes an absolute ingrained part of what's happening, which I think it very well is terms of using technology within, you know, our teaching day. To really be thoughtful about how we're supporting those teachers and staff to do that. And what that really looks like, and what the best practice is. And I think everyone around you is figuring that out. So I don't think TCAPS is ahead or behind. I think it's a learning process, but you really need to have that at the forefront. And at the same piece, the reflection of, well that plan does not work, or that amount of time is not going to cut it, or what the realistic expectation if this is the only time you can provide, then what can we actually get done that we think is valuable to our students, you know on our staff. And I mean those are hard conversations but I think they need to happen.  Danelle Brostrom  17:47  Okay, I know that you love Google. Favorite Google tool and why? Evan O'Branovic  17:52  This is a good one. Um, I gotta go with a simple Google tool but one I've found the most fun in working with, you know, other teachers and students when I get a chance to get in there is Google Slides. I think it often gets overlooked. It's left as its PowerPoint. PowerPoint for Google I can share it with my students, great. I think there's a lot of little tips and tricks and hacks. Done a few presentations, you know, labeling it as such, with, that you can do with slides to really kind of change the dynamic of how you use it. So changing the page size, which is a super simple change in that, and it kind of changes the whole dynamic of what it's used. It becomes a magazine. You can print it out in eight and a half by eleven. Becomes a virtual, you know, publication where it looks like pages in a book that can be flipped through online. Adding different elements when you can put videos. My favorite thing to do, hopefully my friends back in Colorado, listen to this, I love GIFS. I love making GIFS. So, unfortunately not really funny, guess they're more, you know, educational training GIFS of how to do this that or the other. And so being able to make those short videos and then put them in a slideshow and so people can flip through as they deem necessary and go back and forth, has been my, was my go to in terms of any sort of instructional tool. And people seem to appreciate that far more than listening to my voice for three minutes droning on and on. Or being like, that two minutes, does that where he explained the part I already know? With the slideshow you can just flip back and forth and I just think it's fun to make GIFs. So, and then you get to put a funny one at the end. So I love that piece of slides, and just in general the some of the new adoptions they have with it. Using the, the speaker notes, letting the students be able to voice-to-text Danelle Brostrom  19:47  Huge Evan O'Branovic  19:48  into the speaker notes is big. When voice to type first came on a Google Docs so it was great tool for, you know, our students who couldn't type. And how are we going to get them so they would talk into the document. The document would write and then I'm trying to show a first grader how to copy and paste. And that's just, we're not using again, our time wisely. We're pulling the parachute very quickly. And so, Larry Burden  20:09  What is developmentally appropriate? Not that, it turns out.  Evan O'Branovic  20:12  Absolutely. And so, it's a go to. And I like it because it's easily accessible. It's one that already people are familiar with. So, when you can kind of show them some really fun ways to utilize it. That's me, tops it for now. Slides is my favorite.  Danelle Brostrom  20:27  Good answer. Evan O'Branovic  20:28  Choose your own adventures with slides. That's the best. create links to different pages, hide pages. All kids get a kick out of that especially when you let them make their own. Larry Burden  20:38  I'm excited to do that.  Danelle Brostrom  20:40  So give us some insight into a few things we can expect from our TCAPS Technology Department this year.  Evan O'Branovic  20:45  These are well thought out and ever changing. But what I'm hoping to bring here, and utilize the people and the resource that already here which I've mentioned are great. So a big thing for us is going to be some curriculum partnerships. So how are we working well with our curriculum folks to do all the things that we've just been rambling on about? Without these two departments, you know, working together, being on the same page, communicating better, it's not going to happen. And so I'm really hoping to and by all signs pointing right now, I mean, it's, it's starting to work. But it's a work in progress of just opening those doors, creating those open lines, making sure that as much as curriculum may be on the forefront for some of the things we're doing as technology and like that same mentality to be on the flip. So, is curriculum thinking about technology and because so many of pretty much all new curriculum products involve technology in some way. So, are they first thought to reach out and be like, how is this going to work, what do I not know that I can ask these folks about? I just really want that to be pretty seamless. I want us to work hand in hand. That goes along the lines with doing some other things to that we've already started, like overlaying ISTE Standards into the existing curriculum. So where does it fit in? So not that it's one more thing for teachers. Which we all know does not work and they don't have enough time for. But whereas it just already fitting? And so we can do that groundwork with Curriculum's blessing which we've gotten and then present that to our teachers and be like, see how this is already happening or, point out projects that I know many of them are probably working on and be like, you're doing it. And now you just know what to call it. And that, to me is big, and I think, not to be able to reference ISTE Standards for Students and then Teachers themselves is doing, you know, a big disservice to how technology is really going to work with education. so it's really important to me.  Evan O'Branovic  22:40  And then the buzzword STEM. So, we have a lot of STEM talk and what that action actually looks like and technology is right in that. So, to think that we're not going to be involved in some way, is just not a possibility. So just, how we can help support that. Because everyone's talking about STEM and my experience is everyone has different views of what that actually means. It's a good word to say again my experience someone can probably comment, call in and comment. Larry Burden  23:10  We can get it really confusing and throw STEAM in there and really have some conversations Evan O'Branovic  23:13  STEAM to. But just like I just, I think I said to Danielle, I think everyone says the word STEM and then in their head goes, please don't ask me specifically what I'm talking about, when I say STEM.  Danelle Brostrom  23:24  That's my next question for you Evan.  Evan O'Branovic  23:25  Yeah, so please don't. Please don't ask me that. I'll say it closer to the mic so that it's more clear. Please don't ask me. But yeah, so that one's an important one.  Evan O'Branovic  23:36  We want to look at our workflow. There's so much going on with technology the department's so big, you know, between the data team, the instructional team, the network people. How are we working smarter, not harder. I think a lot of those systems are already in place, or at least, you know, been talked about. And I'm hoping to just help kind of drive that ship, and make sure that it does become more efficient, and people feel like their work is valued. And that we're not redoing things that already have been done well. And so just kind of tying that all together. The libraries are another important one, working with Stephie a lot on just starting by what everything looks like. How the libraries are operating, and what our kind of dreams and hopes are for those spaces, and how we can really turn them into moving from an old library model, which, again, I think it's just a national trend of just books in a room, to where it truly becomes a dynamic learning space. And again, that's a buzz thing, kind of like STEM, you'll see a lot of people want to do that. So, but I actually do want to do it, as I know many other people in this district do. So how is that going to look? It's not going to be easy, but I think we have all the pieces in place to really make some changes there. So looking at the libraries is going to be huge.  Evan O'Branovic  24:52  Lastly, in instructional support. The one thing that shocked me about coming here was we have 1.6, 1.6 Danelle Brostrom  24:59  Small but mighty.  Evan O'Branovic  24:59  Danelle and Dave instructional team for 15 or 16, schools technically, probably 16 officially right? How many students 10,000 plus,  Danelle Brostrom  25:12  and staff  Evan O'Branovic  25:13  and staff  Danelle Brostrom  25:14  and support staff.  Evan O'Branovic  25:16  And support staff. Danelle Brostrom  25:16  and, and... Evan O'Branovic  25:18  so as impressed as I was about everything,  Larry Burden  25:22  That's why the podcast is only 20 minutes long. Evan O'Branovic  25:24  which I still am impressed. Just how we can help that. I'm coming from a district, to give myself away, very small, three schools. And I had two Tech Integrators, myself and another person for three schools, and we were jockeying to get a third. So we had seen, but I think that's hopefully a compliment to us the value of our position. And so we were hoping that to be most effective, we really needed one per school in order to help that staff, and, and touch base with all those people on a regular basis. And so now I'm coming to this place... Larry Burden  26:01  There's a lot of smiles in here. We are holding the laughing in. Evan O'Branovic  26:06  that is not very close to that. Which is unfortunate, and it's not the end of the world. And so I think, you know, looking at that, maximizing the time and the resources that Danelle, David and to an extent, Stephie, you have to really figure out how we can use that. And we've had some of those discussions. And then, you know, maybe down the road, If we can do a good job, which I think we will have showcasing that value of, is this a position we need to increase, bring into the fold, Really, you know, showcase how that can be helpful. If Danelle can see a building, or someone like a Danelle can see a building more than once every couple weeks in an ideal world which probably isn't even always plausible, You know, moon shot. Larry Burden  26:53  Live the the dream, Danelle Unknown Speaker  26:54  Moon shot Larry Burden  26:54  live the dream,  Evan O'Branovic  26:55  The new guy, you know, he has a lot of hopes and dreams and then he settles into the reality. But I try and hold on to them for as long as possible so that we can make it happen. Larry Burden  27:03  I didn't sound like you have, you've had a bedding in period at all. You basically jumped right into the fire. And,  Evan O'Branovic  27:08  yeah,  Larry Burden  27:08  it had been on the burner for a while. Evan O'Branovic  27:10  Yeah, there was no, just relaxing. I've been told a variety of different timelines I have as the new guy. It goes anywhere from three months to a year. Some I'm hoping I get the year to really adjust myself. We'll see if the three months people will hold me to that and see if I got everything locked in within about three months. But it's a lot is a lot happening. And I definitely come from the instructional side of things. So that's my strengths, which I really enjoy doing. And something that you know, gets me going and then I've been trying to pick up, though I had some experience with all the technical side of things. You know, that's where I lean heavily on the Thomases the Bills,  Larry Burden  27:48  So Sorry, Evan O'Branovic  27:49  All this  Evan O'Branovic  27:50  So, sorry. Evan O'Branovic  27:51  You know, have their, have their own quirks, but are a great group of guys. And so, you know, I just lean really heavily on them to be like, what do I need to know to best help you, support you? That's what I'm all about. How can I support all these people? Because, they all do their jobs really well. They don't need me to micromanage. So I'm trying to avoid that. That's the goal. Larry Burden  28:12  Well, it sounds like there's gonna be some pushing and asking that infrastructure to do some things that maybe it's not quite set up to do right now. And having a good understanding of that, allowing yourself some time to have a good understanding of that, so.  Evan O'Branovic  28:23  Yeah, we're working on a whole lotta "Yes," right now. So that's what I pitched at the beginning. Probably gonna over Yes. Meaning we'll say yes to a lot of things. And I'm sure we'll have to reel that back a little bit. But I'm hoping to that's all my vision of, of trying to build those relationships. Show people that we're here to support. But that goes in both ways, meaning and I want to say yes to our team internally to for ideas they have, suggestions on how to make things happen. And I think if we can do a little bit more of that and do it in a reasonable fashion that we can accomplish, we're really going to showcase the value. And then it becomes easier to get some of those high level big goals done. Like have more Tech Curriculum Coordinators and EdTech coaches. All those good things that I think are just as important as the infrastructure data side, which is also vitally important, but we, I want more of a balance.  Larry Burden  29:18  The goal is to have it unseen. And nobody asked questions about it. It just works. Now It's time to actually teach people the tool. Evan O'Branovic  29:24  Right. Now, what's the data center? No one knows. It's just that building over there that used to be an old  elementary. That's always fun to show people, though. People who don't have an awareness of what the data center here at TCAPS looks like. That is an incredible building and just operation from a school district standpoint. I've never seen anything like it. I'm sure they exist in other places. But I was blown away by that. And that, to me is a really exciting piece to have and to know it's already in place. So we're moving on past that.  Larry Burden  29:55  What else you got? Danelle Brostrom  29:55  Wanna play game?  Evan O'Branovic  29:57  I do.  Danelle Brostrom  29:57  Okay. Brand new segment on the pad. This is called, This or That. Rapid fire. You gotta answer, okay? Evan O'Branovic  30:04  So you're going to give you two options, and I just hit it with one or the other.  Danelle Brostrom  30:08  You got it, one or the other. Okay?  Evan O'Branovic  30:09  I can handle that.  Danelle Brostrom  30:10  First, Google Docs or Google Sheets?  Evan O'Branovic  30:13  Sheets.  Danelle Brostrom  30:14  Podcast or Radio?  Evan O'Branovic  30:16  Podcast.  Danelle Brostrom  30:17  Let's talk about devices, touchscreen or just use the mouse? Evan O'Branovic  30:21  touchscreen. Danelle Brostrom  30:22  Michigan State or U of M? Evan O'Branovic  30:23  Michigan State.  Danelle Brostrom  30:24  Work with the Tech Department or go rogue? Evan O'Branovic  30:29  Work with the Tech Department. Danelle Brostrom  30:31  text or call on the phone millennial?  Evan O'Branovic  30:33  Text all day.  Danelle Brostrom  30:35  Lucy or Rosie? Evan O'Branovic  30:39  Rosie. Danelle Brostrom  30:39  I didn't think you were going to answer. Larry Burden  30:39  I would not have answered that. Evan O'Branovic  30:47  Not becuase...Rosie doesn't get the love my first born Lucy does. So my wife does a very nice job of taking care of Lucy and giving her everything and anything she wants. And don't get me wrong, she gets anything she wants for me too. But I try and lean on Rosie a little bit. she's second child and she needs that love, so I try and be that, that support system for her.  Danelle Brostrom  31:07  Nice  Evan O'Branovic  31:08  So that's what I'm leaning on. So we split. You know right now we can still play man to man. And do not have to go zone. So yeah, I'd say my wife's got Lucy. And I got Rosie.  Danelle Brostrom  31:18  Love it.  Larry Burden  31:19  Tech Tool of the Week. Techtool of the Week  31:24  Tech Tool of the Week, Headspace is free for educators. This happened over the summer. Headspace is a meditation app. And it is also located on your computer. So you can use it either one. But they went free for educators, which is exciting because there's an entire section for kids. You know that we love using meditation to bring kids down after recess, to bring kids to a place of getting ready to take assessments, or just to a place of calm. And I think Headspace has some really good options for kids. There's a whole section where you can choose an age group and find really quick three to six minute meditations that are perfect for the classroom. So I'll put that link in the show notes. Larry Burden  32:00  They do a great job. That particular app does a great job of actually teaching the concepts of mindfulness in a way that's understandable and not to cosmic. Danelle Brostrom  32:08  The graphics are beautiful too. And it's just a really, really nice tool for educators.  Larry Burden  32:13  absolutely Danelle Brostrom  32:13  I like it even better than Calm. Evan O'Branovic  32:14  And they're doing full circle there. They're helping you maybe not want to be on your phone or an app with a phone or an app. So they're working themselves by being to good out of their own business but that's impressive. It's a good goal. Larry Burden  32:26  All right, um, tutorials and updates just wanted to point out that we have a TechNollerGist pod recording on Thursday should drop on Friday. Just in time for the weekend. So clear out the calendars for the weekend so you can listen to the pod. You'd mentioned earlier TCAPSLoop YouTube channel is not dead yet. Moment of Clarity With Rev. Lorrie Daly-Price

This week we hear the story of Thomas from John’s gospel. This has always been one of my favourites. Of course, it’s not just a story about Thomas. It’s also a story about frightened disciples. So scared, in fact, that they hid behind locked doors. And who can blame them? They had just witnessed the one they confessed to be the Messiah betrayed by one of his own, tried and convicted by both religious and civil authorities  and then brutally executed. Little wonder they were afraid, assuming that the next step would be to round up Jesus’ followers. But when Jesus comes on the scene, their fear falls away and is replaced by joy. This, I think, is the way we assume faith should work. Yes, perhaps you’ve got doubts and questions and fears, but then God arrives and those all fall away, replaced by joy and wonder and, of course, unshakeable faith. But that’s not the way it works with Thomas. He doubts. He questions. He disbelieves. He’s not satisfied with second-hand reports and wants to see for himself. And again I would say, who can blame him? He was, after all, one of those who saw his Lord and friend mistreated, beaten and then crucified and has probably spent the last few days pulling the broken pieces of his life back together and trying to figure out what to do next. Thomas finally comes to faith when he first has the chance to voice his doubt and questions and then experiences Jesus for himself. Perhaps the opportunity before us this week is provide the same opportunities for the many Thomases in our world today.

We made it through the Halloween season! So much went on the past few weeks. Massive balloon handling, returning to the scene of many past debaucheries, a trip to visit Isaac, and taking out the damn dock. Plenty of fall nonsense. Contents: - Someone loves 311 and penis. I suspect most of their fans are like this. - This is a new segment for Simon, a naughty plastic doll who lives at the bakery and whose videos you can watch on their Instagram page - https://www.instagram.com/twobirdsbakery/ - Doug and the Thomases got to help test a new Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade balloon! As far as they could tell, it worked. - Travis knows some hip hop. - Three Piles for Trilety (She likes piles.) - I'm working on a great thing with a waterfall in my living room. Pictures forthcoming... - Doug and Megan venture into The Drinkery, formerly Doug's old karaoke hangout. He tells her stories of his glory days. Like the Boss song. - 'The Tin Man' by Neva Dinova - Doug and Megan take a day trip to Whiting, IA where the original 'Children of the Corn' was filmed in 1983. Doug geeks out real good. - Doug had to help dad take out the dock they put in in the spring. Apparently this will happen EVERY YEAR. - Flip Flop Brad (I still say it really sounds like that.) - Doug tells the story of how his roommates tricked him into eating nasty fake cookies in 1995 - Hobowreck Demotime: 'Today' by Smashing Pumpkins - Secret hidden bit! Wonderful nonsense at the Barley Street Tavern :)
