What if the anxiety, overthinking, people pleasing, emotional shutdown, hypervigilance, burnout, and relationship struggles you experience today… were never actually "you" to begin with? In this deeply personal and profoundly eye-opening solo episode, Darin Olien dives into the hidden nervous system programming formed between the ages of 0 and 8 that silently shapes our adult lives. Drawing from neuroscience, trauma research, attachment theory, epigenetics, somatic healing, and his own emotional breakthroughs, Darin explores how childhood experiences become subconscious operating systems that influence everything from relationships and stress responses to chronic disease and self-worth. This episode is a powerful roadmap toward healing. Darin breaks down the science behind trauma, the ACE study, nervous system dysregulation, emotional patterning, and neuroplasticity, while also sharing practical tools like somatic experiencing, expressive writing, EMDR, and Internal Family Systems to help listeners begin rewiring their emotional lives from the inside out. What You'll Learn How childhood experiences program the nervous system Why most adult emotional reactions are subconscious survival patterns The connection between trauma, stress hormones, and chronic disease How the nervous system stores emotional experiences in the body Why people pleasing, hypervigilance, burnout, and emotional shutdown develop The science behind neuroplasticity and rewiring the brain What the ACE Study revealed about childhood trauma and adult health How trauma impacts the amygdala, hippocampus, and stress-response systems Why emotional patterns are adaptations, not character flaws How epigenetics can pass trauma responses across generations The role of somatic experiencing in trauma healing Practical tools for emotional regulation and nervous system repair They are not your identity. They are not permanent. And through awareness, somatic healing, emotional processing, nervous system regulation, and conscious repetition, those deeply rooted patterns can be rewritten into something healthier, freer, and more aligned with who you truly are." Truly inspirational coach, teacher, and mentor to women of all ages and stages, Chaya Hinda Allen, teaches us how to stop abandoning ourselves and how to live authentically through self-attunement.There is a parsha in the Torah that describes the Jewish people's encampment in the desert as being opposite of Har Sinai. Saying that it is "opposite" the mountain, instead of "next to" the mountain, is an interesting way of phrasing how the Jews were positioned. Chaya Hinda explains the profound reasoning for this wording. She explains that the Torah is an ideal of perfection, while the reality is that Jews aren't perfect; we were never meant to be perfect. Our life was meant to be a journey. In this way, we are always meant to learn and grow. The first step in growing is to know yourself.Chaya Hinda goes on to explain the deep importance of knowing yourself. She explains that a child is helpless and is in need of attachment to survive. We are hard wired to survive, so we will attach to people even if they are abusive or neglectful. Children often learn that the only way they get any form of attachment (that often comes in the form of attention) is if they people please; if they are attuned to the needs of others and stand ready to conform themselves to those needs, instead of their own. This type of people pleasing, giving, and always trying to make others happy is often carried into adulthood. People end up subconsciously giving so much to others (thinking that they are being "good" or doing something positive), at the expense of meeting their own needs. Quite often, people don't even know what their needs are because they are simply surviving off the praise and compliments that they receive from serving other people's needs. That is self-abandonment.Self-abandonment often leads to physical illnesses because when you suppress your own emotional needs, they come up as physical ailments in the body. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO HAVE YOUR OWN NEEDS! DON'T IGNORE YOUR OWN NEEDS!The cure for self-abandonment is self-attunement, when you stop focusing on other people's needs and start focusing on your own needs. Chaya Hinda encourages women to take away the blame and the shame of their feelings--all feelings are ok. It's ok to feel whatever you feel--even the yuckiest feelings are ok. You have to feel in order to heal. She explains that the most important part of the healing process is when you allow yourself to sit with your feelings and really feel them--wherever they are in your body. (Sometime you will feel a heaviness in the pit of your stomach, or a tightness in your chest.) 1. Take the time to sit with yourself, COMPASSIONATELY, WITHOUT SELF-JUDGEMENT. 2. Allow yourself to feel whatever feelings come up. It may take a while for you to fully feel the extent of your feeling. Multiple feelings might come up at the same time. That's ok. Feel whatever comes up, and DON'T PUSH THE FEELINGS AWAY.3. Cry, scream and yell if that's what you need to do to process your emotions.4.Tune into your feelings and see what message they have for you. Your feelings are your teachers. They teach you about yourself. By tuning into your feelings, you get to know authentic self; you find out who you really are, beyond the people pleasing. You learn that YOU ARE IMPORTANT. When you learn that WHO YOU ARE MATTERS, you show up in life differently. Chaya Hinda gives some great examples of some of her clients who have made beautiful transformations from being women who used to abandon themselves to now being women who are in tune with themselves and who really see themselves. Compassionate care is essential for positive patient outcomes and nurse well-being. Current models are largely practice-focused and not integrated into a nursing curriculum. Thus, new nurses are often unprepared to deliver compassionate care. In this podcast and article, Dr. Lori Brodie discusses a strategy to nurture compassion as a professional identity.
God's people must be compassionately considerate about what might be behind a person's sinful actions. Compassionately Consider the Stories of Other Sinners.

Our brains learn through a process that has three components: trigger, behavior, reward. Together these behaviors form what is known as a habit loop. In today's meditation, Dr. Brewer walks us through a practice to notice triggers—when they're happening and how they make us feel. When we pay attention to these triggers, we can respond to ourselves with more compassion and make choices with a lot more clarity. Jud Brewer, MD, Ph.D. ("Dr. Jud") is a New York Times best-selling author and thought leader in the field of habit change and the "science of self-mastery," who blends over 20 years of experience with mindfulness training and a career in scientific research. He is passionate about understanding how our brains work, and how to use that knowledge to help people make deep, permanent change in their lives — with the goal of reducing suffering in the world at large. Dr. Jud is the director of research and innovation at Brown University's Mindfulness Center, where he also serves as a professor in Behavioral and Social Sciences at the School of Public Health and Psychiatry at the School of Medicine at Brown University. Previously, Dr. Jud held research and teaching positions at Yale University, and the University of Massachusetts' Center for Mindfulness and was a research affiliate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Here's a quote from Dr. Marshall Rosenberg's book, Nonviolent Communication, A Language of Life, that sums up Connecting Compassionately With Ourselves: “When we are internally violent towards ourselves, it is difficult to be genuinely compassionate towards others.” To exercise self-compassion we can evaluate ourselves in ways that promote growth instead of self-hatred. When we have been less than perfect, we can focus on a desire to enrich life for ourselves and others rather than to shame or guilt-trip ourselves. We can avoid “shoulding” ourselves. We can recognize judgmental self-talk when it happens and then quickly focus our attention on underlying needs that may not have been met. Feelings and unmet needs may have stimulated past actions which we now regret. When we acknowledge that possibility, we can better exercise self-forgiveness. Going forward, we can then be conscious of what need is being served by the choices we make.Do you have comments or suggestions about a topic or guest? And although we often think that we should be able to conquer anxiety just by pushing it away or taking a prescription pill, I've found, as a clinical psychologist, that anxiety tends to get worse-- often much worse--until we mindfully address the underlying issues. And when it comes to healing anxiety, research shows that CBT--cognitive behavioral therapy--yields top-notch results. Join Dr. Carla and Dr. Joel Minden, leading psychotherapist, educator, and author, who offers expert advice on how to become the boss of your anxiety. Topics discussed include anxiety, CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), obsessive thoughts, intrusive thoughts, betrayal, trust, affair, infidelity, cheating, romantic relationship, divorce, dating, avoidance, repetitive thoughts, adaptive behavior, cognitive flexibility, tolerance, panic attacks, fear, avoidance, compassion, self-compassion, understanding, thought distortions, distorted thinking, thinking errors, emotions, fight or flight response, hypervigilance, and anxiety treatment. In this engaging conversation, Joy McCarthy shares her personal journey from struggling with health issues to becoming a nutritionist and skincare expert. She emphasizes the importance of self-worth in health, discusses her experience with rosacea, and highlights the role of diet and lifestyle in skin healing. Joy also delves into her philosophy on skincare product development, advocating for a simplified routine that prioritizes hydration and skin health. The discussion concludes with insights on community support and the ongoing journey of health and wellness. Takeaways Joy's journey into wellness began with her own health struggles. Self-worth is crucial for making lasting health changes. Many people tolerate poor health due to a lack of self-worth. Healing is a continuous journey, not a one-time fix. Diet and lifestyle play significant roles in skin health. Rosacea is a common but often misunderstood condition. Skincare should focus on hydration and maintaining the skin barrier. Today, we're diving into a topic that's both challenging and transformative. Our guest today is Dawn Albert, CEO and founder of Courage to Answer, a coaching business dedicated to helping white people build racial resilience so they can be true advocates for racial equity. She shares her views on understanding and unlearning the biases that shape people's identities, particularly as people with privilege. Dawn's story is one of courage and growth. She shares how unconscious biases influence our lives. And she outlines her simple yet deeply profound techniques for how to combat your own unconscious biases on your own. Together, we'll discuss how bringing hidden thoughts to light can lead to meaningful change—not just within ourselves, but in the world around us. We'll also explore how to step into greater self-awareness with kindness and compassion. And why self-love is about acknowledging the thoughts we've inherited, sitting with them, and choosing to grow from them. | ABOUT THE PODCAST: This minimalist wants more. “Regardless of those people who depend on you, it is possible for you to be true to who you are. Compassionately, ruthlessly true to who you are. . . true to the open heart.” The most common question Gangaji receives at the end of a retreat is, “How can I trust myself to be true to the truth of who I am while living my daily life?” How do we raise children, pay the bills, go to work, or sustain a marriage and be true to who we are? Is it really a question of trust? In this episode, Gangaji speaks to what is actually closer, and more essential than trust. Have you ever had a person you deeply care about go through a terrible loss and you didn't quite know what to say or how to help? In our culture here in the United States, grief is so misunderstood. People often are very well-intended, but say things to their friends, co-workers, and family members in an effort to help that ultimately leads to greater isolation for the person in grief. In this week's episode, Elizabeth Mintun shares the “do's” and “don'ts” on how to best support someone experiencing intense grief. She offers details and actionable steps that will hopefully support anyone wanting to be there for someone who is currently grieving. Key Takeaways: Advice-giving and attempting to “cheer someone up” is typically not helpful (and even potentially damaging) to someone in the grieving process. Everyone's experience of grief is unique; one person's grief cannot be compared to another's. Offering to step in either to simply compassionately listen or to offer acts of service to lighten the load for the griever tends to be the most helpful. Telling a griever to “call me if you need me” isn't usually helpful because that puts the work on the griever to reach out at a time when they're exhausted and in survival mode. Have you ever experienced a downward spiral? Those moments that knock you off course, and then it's all downhill from there? We all have our triggers that can set things in motion... what we don't always realize is the spiral can be traveled in two different directions. In this episode we're going to talk about spiraling up, not down, and how understanding the spiral nature of our own growth can help us live with more compassion for ourselves and others.
Welcome back to my new series “I'm the problem, it's me,” where I call bullshit on myself for the self-sabotage and mistakes I keep on making, because that's the stuff that teaches us the most. Today is a vulnerable one. Remember that recent “show me you at 21” trend that circulated on social media? Well that deep-dive through old photo albums and Facebook timelines sent me into a certifiable spiral. Reflecting on who I was in my teens and early 20s, I was confronted with a tidal wave of self hate over how I looked and dressed, how much I drank, how obnoxiously and overly-sexualized I present myself, and how disconnected I seemed to be from who I really am.The judgment and shame towards my past self was overwhelming, until I realized that my current self is in fact the problem. It's easy to be critical in hindsight, but when we were young, we were almost always doing the best we could with what we knew. I've spent a good chunk of adulthood resenting the versions of myself that came before this one. So it's me, Gill, I'm the problem, it's me. And in today's episode I'm rewriting my relationship with my past, and choosing compassion. Join me as I dive into: Why looking into my past brought up so much shame How accepting our past selves can lead to more confidence and compassion Aiming for neutrality and acceptance VS unconditional self-love The power of inner child work The tools I'm using to build self-compassion and change my self-talk Why you should write letters to your past self Learning from the versions of ourselves that we've outgrownWhy growth and change can go hand-in-hand with griefI hope we can all learn to love the past eras that brought us to this one, and in the meantime, know that I love you. By tuning in, you'll gain a deeper understanding of the unseen forces and motivations that govern human behavior, and learn how to approach involvement in others' conflicts with a balance of compassion and love—especially when the rest of society might be reacting with less than charitable attitudes.Support the show
We are called to love others. Jesus demonstrated this. It is one of the main markers of a true believer. It is easy to talk and think about loving others, but the fruit is measured by action. This is where the rubber meets the road. In this episode, we look at what true kindness is—that giving ourselves to others doesn't obligate them to us. It is a sacrifice to God.

As we begin to wrap up our week on being used by God, today we'll explore what it means to live compassionately. This radical way of living will transform the people around you and expose them to the beautiful nature of Jesus. After we experience his great compassion for us, may we have no choice but to mimic that with others. Our Scripture for today comes from Ephesians 4:32, and today's worship is I am Loved by Mack Brock. -- Thank you so much for listening to today's devotional. As you head out into the rest of your day, seek to maintain an open heart with others around you. One of the most helpful realizations in having compassion for others is that we judge ourselves by our intentions, and others by their actions. Try and see past the words and actions of others today, to look at their heart. And as you live openly today, allow the vision to the heart to produce true compassion. Make sure to rate, review, and subscribe. Have a wonderful rest of your day, and may God bless you as you seek him.
