Today we speak with David Odorisio, East-West Psychology PhD, about Eastern and Western wisdom traditions, searching for wholeness, and the integration of monasticism and contemplative spirituality with relationship and partnership. David's academic work is steeped in religious studies and we speak of the benefits and challenges of interfaith dialogue through the work of Carl Jung and Thomas Merton. We ask David about his dissertation titled, “Alchemical Hermeneutics: Re-Visioning the Yoga Sūtras , Dark Night, and Heart Center in the Upaniṣads  and Eastern Christian Prayer through a Jungian Lens”, and we unpack the concept of alchemical hermeneutics based on Jung's transformative praxis of cross-culturally and comparatively mapping psychic stages and developments in consciousness. We talk about David's book “Depth Psychology and Mysticism”, and discuss Jung's gnostic approach to religious studies and his vision of hermeneutics beyond mere textual interpretation, but more importantly as spiritual transmission which facilitates and activates one's individuation, which can be considered an immanent and contemplative approach to existential hermeneutics based on the mytho-poetics of sacred wisdom texts. As we discuss the intersection of poststructural thought and Jungian notions of individuation, David quotes Jung's advise, “don't follow the teachings, follow the unfolding of your own path”, and we agree on the importance of the notion of a heretical approach to individuation. The discussion ends briefly considering comic books as mystical text and opens to the contemporary intersection of the paranormal and the sacred. David M. Odorisio, PhD is Associate Core Faculty in Pacifica Graduate Institute's Mythological Studies graduate degree program. David received his PhD in East-West Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies and teaches in the areas of theory and method in the study of religion, psychology and religion, and comparative mysticism. Katharine Merlin apprenticed with renowned astrologer Isabel Hickey of Boston, studied psychology at the Jung Foundation in New York and has been a practicing astrologer for over forty years. Fascinated by this ancient art from a very early age, she discovered, only recently, that her maternal lineage traces back to a great-great grandfather, Dr. Charles Winterburn of New York (1815 -1881) who was both a physician and a highly respected astrologer in his time. Katharine, or “Kate” as she is known, is the author of both The Private Lives of the Sun Signs (Glitterati Incorporated, 2015) and Character and Fate, the Psychology of the Birth Chart, (PenguinArkana 1989). Astrology columnist for Town & Country magazine since 1989. What I wanted to do with this book was to tell the truth about what—in my eyes—Astrology is really about. People often come to me to get their fortunes told and it really is possible to get a sense of how life can work out for them from their birth charts. What their charts actually show, though, is who they are. Looking at someone's chart is like coming into the middle of a story. And the story is being written by them. Each story is a mélange of ancestral patterns, past lives, and an indefinable blend of the inner self and free will. It is fascinating to see how these stories and patterns show themselves in people's charts and how they live them out. I believe that the debilitating idea that the stars beam down on us and determine our fate is one that needs to be totally dispelled. The planets don't directly affect us, it's a matter of “As above, so below”—The stars act like a cosmic mirror, which helps us to discover what and who we are. And it's up to us to decide what kind of story we're going to write. Most people misunderstand the ancient art of consulting the stars. “Astrology's Magic Mirror” is not about a fate that's laid out for us to live. It is about the story of our own lives that we are writing. The starry cosmos acts like an amazing mirror in which we can find a picture of who we are and what we are born to do. And the stories our charts tell about ourselves can bring us home to ourselves. Find out more about Katharine Merlin here: https://www.katharinemerlin.com/

Welcome to the podcast! Today I am very delighted to be joined by dreamer, writer, and artist Toko-pa Turner.  Toko-pa was born in a farmhouse in Devon, England by a midwife to poet-parents. Because they liked the music saying it made, they named her after the Maori deity, Toko-pa, who is the “Parent of the Mist” according to the Maori creation myth.  She came to Canada at the age of four, where her grandparents settled after the war in Poland, and was raised in a Sufi community in Montreal.  Along with yoga, meditation, Sufi dancing and singing, dreaming was an everyday part of her culture.  From a very young age, Toko-pa was encouraged to share and explore her vivid dreams.  In her early twenties, Toko-pa toured with a band, eventually recording her first original album. It wasn’t until her mid-twenties that she returned to the mystical teachings of Sufism and the study of dreams. She became deeply interested in Analytical Psychology and did a 3-year internship at the Jung Foundation of Ontario, while pursuing her studies in spirituality, mythology and shamanism.  In early 2001, she was awarded a scholarship to study with psycho-physiologist and lucid dreaming expert, Dr. Stephen LaBerge, in Hawaii. She spent the following year writing a documentary series, “Awake and Dreaming” which was picked up for development by Vision TV.  Blending the mystical tradition of Sufism in which she was raised with a Jungian approach to dreamwork, Toko-pa founded the Dream School in 2001 from which hundreds of students have since graduated.   Toko-pa has been interviewed by CNN News and BBC Radio and has a community of over 100,000 online readers. Her writing has been published worldwide, and she is currently releasing her first book “Belonging” which explores the themes of exile, and the search for belonging.   Sometimes called a Midwife of the Psyche, Toko-pa’s work focuses on restoring the feminine, reconciling paradox, and facilitating grief and ritual practice. You can find Toko-pa on her beloved Facebook page “Dreamwork with Toko-pa” or on her website at toko-pa.com.

We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay! Guest:G.
