This week we're excited to present an archival conversation from 2011 at the 49th New York Film Festival with the makers of the Main Slate selection A Dangerous Method: director David Cronenberg, screenwriter Christopher Hampton, producer Jeremy Thomas, and lead actor Michael Fassbender. Cronenberg returns to the New York Film Festival this Fall with the NYFF62 Main Slate selection The Shrouds starring Vincent Cassel and Diane Kruger. Don't miss the U.S. Premiere of The Shrouds and many more great films by securing your Pass to NYFF62 today at filmlinc.org/passes. From acclaimed director David Cronenberg came A Dangerous Method, a dark tale of sexual and intellectual discovery featuring two of the greatest minds of the 20th century. Carl Jung (played by Michael Fassbender) has just begun his psychiatric career, having been inspired by the great Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen). When a mysterious and beautiful woman (Keira Knightley) goes under Jung's care, Jung finds himself crossing the line of the doctor/patient relationship, causing great conflict with his mentor and making Jung question his own morality in the process. The conversation was moderated by Scott Foundas.
What a wonderful day! Hayley has made her way out west for an LCD Soundsystem concert, which means your intrepid hosts are in the same room recording live in person for the very first time, as we took our best gals to see 2024's Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes on laser IMAX at the old SilverCity Coquitlam on a great trip through the many suburbs of Vancouver. And because they were in the room listening along during the recording anyway, J Mo and Haylz are joined on the mic by their respective life partners (platonic or otherwise) as Sydney Beaudin and Ashley Olson make their triumphant podcast debuts. It's an off-brand episode as we break the format to talk about a movie we saw in theatres, recorded mere hours after we had all just seen it. Directed by Wes Ball, written by Josh Friedman, and starring Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, Travis Jeffrey, Lydia Peckham and William H. Macy, Kingdom has a tough act to follow in the Caesar trilogy but still manages to offer its own unique thrills thanks in no small part to its overgrown ruin, post-apocalyptic setting. It's also a perfect demo reel for Ball to show he was the perfect choice to make a live action Legend of Zelda movie. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, it is of course currently in theatres everywhere, and will no doubt be streaming on Disney+ about five weeks from now. Other works discussed in this episode include Videodrome, The Fly, Crimes of the Future, A History of Violence, Eastern Promises, Scanners, Cosmopolis, Maps to the Stars, A Dangerous Method, The Maze Runner, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant, Avatar: The Way of Water, The Lord of the Rings, Abigail, Real Steel, Deadpool & Wolverine, I.F., Harold & The Purple Crayon, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and Twisters. We'll be back next week recording separately from our respective provinces as we welcome Mad Max: Fury Road into the podcast canon. That one is currently streaming in Canada on Crave and Starz at the time of publication. You can also grab it for $5 on Blu-ray from the discount bin at your local Walmart. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Help NinetyForChill: The #Podcast get away from paywalls by subscribing to "Ninety For Chill: The Podcast with CatBusRuss". Ninety For Chill is closing out 2023 with some cinematic banter from ThePoeticCritic. CatBusRuss and his big sister discuss how the movie landscape has changed, be it offerings for the multiplexes or streaming services. Their primary concern: Where are the movies? Our host is more concerned about where to stream them. With the top electronic retailer deciding to stop selling physical media, CatBus is out to grab the remaining worthwhile steelbooks. Too bad Universal/Comcast is willing to license their features to other streamers. Peacock should be enough to watch "The Super Mario Bros. Movie". He is not going to subscribe to Netflix. Thank Viacom for keeping "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" on Paramount+. But what will happen in Paramount and WBD merge? ThePoeticCritic is more concerned about the movie-going experience. She explains how there just does not seem to be anything to draw people in most weekends. "Wonka" was her grand exception to the rule, but Disney and DC movies are not bringing in the money that they use to. Taylor Swift shows that people want events to attend. Where are those grand narratives that should take screens away from the Swifties? Despite the drama, we want to end the podcast on a positive note. At least Russ did. So he discusses his most recent binge to make sure he has all angles covered when determining the top discovery this year. The annual obligatory David Cronenberg feature is his adaptation of the play based on the book about the relationship between Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud, "A Dangerous Method". Was it too grounded to take the top discovery spot from "X" or "Marcel the Shell with Shoes On"? If only a Cronenberg would direct an "Evil Dead" movie. "Evil Dead Rise" was excellent, but was it anything more than a reskin on "Evil Dead (2013)"? And to honor past guest of the show Jonathan "A Film to Fight For" Romeo, CatBus watched "Saint Maud" as per the suggestion from "Possessive Forces vs. #Cinemastodon's Exorcists". Stick around after the chat with TPC to hear our host's critique of this high-concept, A24 horror.

Abby, Patrick, and Dan watch David Cronenberg's 2011 film A Dangerous Method, which dramatizes the complex relationships between Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, and Sabina Spielrein in the first two decades of the twentieth century. They discuss Freud and Jung's fraught relationship and eventual break; Jung's relationship with Spielrein in life and on film; Spielrein's biography and her pioneering work as a psychoanalytic theorist and clinician in her own right; other key figures in the development of psychoanalysis, including Eugen Bleuler and Otto Gross (especially Gross's commitments to anarchism and his concept of mutual analysis); the role of Zurich and the Burghölzli Hospital as a key center of early psychoanalysis; Freud's one and only trip to America; women as objects of exchange in the development of psychoanalysis; Freud's Judaism versus Jung's Protestantism and Jung's maddening (to Freud) tendencies towards mysticism; and the ways that Spielrein's work prefigures the late Freudian concept of the death drive. Books discussed include:Sex Versus Survival: The Life and Ideas of Sabina Spielrein, by John LaurenSabina Spielrein: the Woman and the Myth, by Angela M. SellsThe Essential Writings of Sabina Spielrein: Pioneer of Psychoanalysis, edited by Ruth I. Cape and Raymond BurtFreud's Women, by Lisa Appignanesi and John ForresterThe essay by Sabina Spielrein that Patrick discusses is entitled “Destruction as a Cause of Coming Into Being”Have you noticed that Freud is back? Join Alex and guest host Dr. Sheila Thomas as they chat about the connection and the eventual schism of Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud in David Cronenberg's psychological thriller (?) A Dangerous Method, based on the book A Most Dangerous Method: The Story of Jung, Freud, and Sabina Spielrein, and the stage play The Talking Cure. The film stars Michael Fassbender as Jung and Viggo Mortensen as Freud, with Kiera Knightley as Sabina Spielrein. Spielrein enters Jung's life as a woman with hysteria (not a real disorder), but that turns into an affair with Jung, as he grapples with expanding psychoanalysis into something bigger than what Freud says he wants (lol, to be "empirical" and a "science!"). So strap in (is that a penis joke?) and grab your biggest (another one?) unexplained dream as we chat about these titans of psychological history! Paul, Shawn and Jason move to two of David Cronenberg's later works, both of which show the great director's wandering eye for compelling stories and his passion for taking on all the rules of cinema, as they talk Cosmopolis and A Dangerous Method. A Dangerous Method is the story of the friendship of Freud and Jung, its ups and downs and how that friendship changed the world in some most interesting ways. As usual, Cronenberg listens to his own muse in this one and doesn't create a traditional biopic. Cosmopolis is Cronenberg at his most experimental, adapting Don DeLillo's famously unfilmable 2003 pseudo-postmodern novel, with Robert Pattinson as its lead character. Come hear what the guys have to say about these brilliantly challenging films! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jason-sacks/message
Pink never thought her success would last this long. In the 10th grade, she was voted “most likely to be behind bars in 10 years” when in actuality, she became one of the most beloved and enduring pop stars of the 21st century. In this conversation, Pink tells Tom about the highs and lows of her music career, what it took to survive the industry and what inspired her new album, “Trustfall.” Plus, the actor Sarah Gadon (True Detective, A Dangerous Method, Enemy) gravitates toward challenging characters — and her latest role is no exception. Sarah opens up to Tom (22:08) about making her onstage debut in “Yerma,” about a woman's struggle with infertility, and why she says the character she plays is the “ultimate heroine.”

Director David Cronenberg is best known for mind-bending body horror in films like Scanners, Videodrome, and The Fly, but he made his first “comic book movie” in 2005, an Academy Award-nominated adaptation of a graphic novel - and we do mean graphic. Starring Viggo Mortensen as a small-town diner owner whose mobster past catches up with him, the film was a modest success both financially and critically, and led to a series of collaborations between the actor and director, including Eastern Promises and A Dangerous Method. Now, we're watching the last major Hollywood movie to be released on VHS, which makes it historical - A History of Violence. Folks, we have reached our final night... with Knightley. The film that spawned this miniseries, the feature presentation that makes most use of Keira Knightley's... advantages. Namely, one. Her chin. David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method. You may have seen the infamous clip featuring body horror levels of chin acting (link here if you haven't) but how does the film stack up? Seduced by the challenge of an impossible case, the driven Dr. Carl Jung takes the unbalanced yet beautiful Sabina Spielrein as his patient. Jung's weapon is the method of his master, the renowned Sigmund Freud. Both men fall under Sabina's spell. Join us the for final Five Nights with Knightley and be sure to hear our definitive chin ranking in Chins and Outs. Note: We discuss the latest James Bond, No Time To Die in this episode. This week The Cultists Present David Cronenberg‘s A Dangerous Method (2011). A not-so-intimate insider film about the foundational years of psychoanalysis and the Will They/Won't They smoldering friendships of Carl Jung, Sabina Spielrein, and Sigmund Freud, A Dangerous Method is all about its source materials. From reproducing the personal letters of Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud's private correspondences during their whirlwind friendship to replicating the leitmotifs from Wagner's Ring Cycle in the score, this film does its homework, but it also expects that its audience has as well—A brash choice which may not have been the best one... Moving away from social psychology, we are hosting an 8 week flex/intercession mini-season on cinema representations of psychology. This episode, we are covering Kinsey, a surprisingly less salacious tale than A Dangerous Method, but one filled with some dubious ethics, meaningful moments and a group of researchers interested in understanding sex. Out ratings: As a movie 9/10. As a psychology film 9/10. Not for most classes, but good on content, feelings, and history. Moving away from social psychology, we are hosting an 8 week flex/intercession mini-season on cinema representations of psychology. This episode, we are covering A Dangerous Method, a tale of feuds, Freuds, and the Jung/ Spielrein relationship. We talk psychology, history, Freud, Jung, and the women forgotten in their wake. Out ratings: As a movie 8/10. As a psychology film 5.5/10. Somewhat recommended as a movie and maybe on a watch list for a class. Recorded in time for Freud's 164th birthday, Hugh and Jenna explore the 2011 film, A Dangerous Method, directed by David Cronenberg, written by Christopher Hampton, and starring Keira Knightley, Viggo Mortensen, and Michael Fassbender. Hugh and Jenna discuss the birth and development of psychoanalysis and other psychological methods, though the relationships between the founders, Jung, Freud, and Spielrein. This brings the questions which language films based in non-English speaking countries should be spoken. And Jenna fangirls a little bit over Freud's couch
Author's Talk: John Launer with Dr Graham Music Who was Sabina Spielrein? Her dramatic life story is most famous for her notorious affair with Carl Jung, dramatised in the film A Dangerous Method starring Keira Knightley. Yet she was a woman who overcame family and psychiatric abuse to become an original thinker in the field of sexual psychotherapy. Drawing on thorough and novel research into Spielrein's diaries, professional papers and correspondence, Sex Versus Survival is the first biography to put her life and ideas at the centre of the story. John Launer examines Spielrein's tumultuous affair with Jung and its influence on both of their lives and intellectual journeys, and her key role in the rift between Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud, and in the development of psychoanalysis. A Russian Jew, who lost her life in the Holocaust in 1942, Spielrein's innovative theories have chiefly been suppressed because of her gender. Sex Versus Survival is a significant stage in the rediscovery of the life and ideas of an extraordinary woman and an acknowledgment of her prominent role in the history of sexual psychology. John Launer was on the senior staff of the Tavistock Clinic in London, the leading training institute in the UK for psychological treatment, and is now an Associate Dean for postgraduate medical education at the University of London. He is a doctor and family therapist, and a renowned medical columnist both nationally and internationally. The talk will be chaired by Dr Graham Music, Consultant Psychotherapist at the Tavistock and Portman Clinics, author of The Good Life and Nurturing Natures. Part of a season of talks and events accompanying the exhibition 'Freud and Eros: Love, Lust and Longing', 22 October 2014 - 22 February 2015.

Remember David Cronenberg? The guy who made all those creepy-ass, surreal, body horror films? Well, turns out his tastes have taken a turn for the…normal. Sort of. Maybe. He has also seemingly taken a liking to actor Viggo Mortensen too, this being his third film in a row staring him. He still likes making you … Continue reading "235: SFFCH – A Dangerous Method [2011]"

The sex trafficking case against former Campbell County Judge Tim Nolan has kept growing. And it's getting stranger. A grand jury on Thursday indicted him on eight more charges, including rape of a female over age 12 from an incident dating back to the summer of 1965. That's when Nolan, 70, would've have been about 18 years old. The other new charges took place between 2004 and September 2016 and include two counts of human trafficking, one count of attempted human trafficking with a minor, one count of sodomy, and three counts of unlawful transaction with a minor. Nolan faces more than 100 years in prison on 28 felony charges, including four counts of human trafficking of a minor. The total number of victims is 22, including eight juveniles, according to the attorney general's office. A frail-looking Nolan shuffled into a Campbell County courtroom and entered a not guilty plea Thursday on the new charges. Cincinnati.com Michael Fassbender As Hollywood's leading men fall prey to the reckoning over sexual misconduct, certain A-listers have managed to sidestep scrutiny. But Twitter never forgets. While the media gushes over Michael Fassbender's secret Ibiza nuptials with Alicia Vikander and their new home in Lisbon, dark #MeToo-style allegations from the actor's past have been relegated to social media. In her March Vogue cover, Tomb Raider actress Vikander referenced her domestic bliss with Fassbender, telling the magazine, “I feel I'm more happy and content than I've ever been.” Yet the newlywed Fassbender was a no-show at the 2018 Golden Globes ceremony. While other alleged abusers walked the red carpet in all black, triggering social media backlash over their perceived hypocrisy, Fassbender appears to have simply opted out. Vikander, who was a presenter at the ceremony, arrived, posed for photos, and did E! interviews alone. In keeping with the Time's Up initiative, Vikander wore black. Fassbender may have avoided the Golden Globes and a flurry of think pieces, but allegations of domestic abuse have silently trailed him in recent years. The domestic abuse allegedly occurred in 2010, just two years before Fassbender made his X-Men debut as Magneto and gave an award-winning performance in the critically acclaimed Shame. A 2012 Hollywood Reporter article, “Fassbender on Fire,” chronicled the German-Irish actor's meteoric rise, noting that, while “the projects started pouring in from top-flight directors” around 2009, it wasn't until 2011 that Fassbender had his “real introduction to fame.” The 2012 profile continued, “One of the most gifted actors today, the star of Shame, A Dangerous Method and the upcoming Prometheus has the industry in awe.” the Daily Beast
