As the first in Atlanta to adopt this FDA-cleared system, Northside aims to improve the detection of precancerous polyps that may be missed in standard procedures. The AI assists by highlighting polyps in real time, enhancing screening accuracy. With colorectal cancer being a major health concern, Northside's implementation of this technology represents a significant step in early detection and prevention. The AI-assisted colonoscopy is available at all five Northside hospitals and six outpatient centers. STORY 2:  Cherokee County to Observe Patriot Day Cherokee County's Annual Patriot Day Ceremony will take place at 8:30 a.m. on September 11 at the Public Safety Memorial in Canton Rotary Park. The event is open to the public, rain or shine. Retired U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Andrew Stitt, now the operations manager for Cherokee County E-911, will be the keynote speaker. The proposed millage rate includes 5.223 mills for maintenance and operations (M&O) and 0.454 mills for parks bond debt service, totaling 5.677 mills. This new rate is slightly higher than last year's but below the 2022 rate. If approved, property owners could see an increase in their taxes—about $27.55 for a $475,000 home and $20.30 for a $350,000 non-homestead property. Public hearings will be held on August 19 and August 26 at the Chambers at City Center. STORY 5:   Ball Ground Floating Pay Raises for Mayor and City Council Ball Ground is considering pay raises for its mayor and city council, set to take effect in January 2026 if approved in October. The mayor's salary could rise from $300 to $650 per month, and the city council's pay from $50 to a flat $400 per month. This increase aims to align Ball Ground's salaries with neighboring municipalities, as current rates have been unchanged for over 20 years. The city council believes the adjustment is necessary to fairly compensate officials for their time and responsibilities. Additionally, the city is interviewing candidates for a new city clerk due to the retirement of Karen Jordan. For more details, visit the City of Ball Ground's website. Commercial: INGLES 10 STORY 6:  Runners Race for Charity at CFA Cherokee County 5K Saturday The Chick-fil-A Cherokee County 5K, formerly the Moo've It 5K, takes place at Etowah River Park in Canton on August 17. This annual event, now in its 11th year, features a 5K race, a one-mile “calf run,” and a “nugget roll” for kids aged 2-4. Registration opens at 6 a.m., with the 5K starting at 8 a.m. and the other races following. The event, which includes a cow costume contest and a performance by the North GA Cloggers, raises funds for the Cherokee County Educational Foundation and Cherokee County Special Olympics. Over the past decade, it has raised over $300,000. Registration fees are $50 for the 5K, $25 for the calf run and nugget roll, and $25 for a “ghost runner” option. The race is held rain or shine. STORY 7:  Georgia House Study Committee Takes Up Fishing Rights Jud Turner, former director of Georgia's Environmental Protection Division, suggested that state agency regulations might resolve the complex issue of public fishing rights more effectively than new legislation. During a House study committee meeting, Turner emphasized that rulemaking allows for public input and is well-suited for defining which Georgia rivers and streams are navigable for fishing. This follows legal disputes over fishing bans on private property, which led to recent legislative changes, including removing the “public trust doctrine” to address property owner concerns. The committee, tasked with clarifying navigability, has until December to complete its work but may not necessarily issue recommendations.     We'll have closing comments after this.    COMMERCIAL: Heller   SIGN OFF –   Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast. Biosecurity – what it is, and how to achieve it – is at the top of every dairy farmer's mind as cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) have been found in dairy cattle in several states. Every farmer can take simple, but meaningful, steps to ensure a well-protected industry, said Karen Jordan, a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, chairwoman of the National Dairy FARM Program's animal care task force, and a member of NMPF's Board of Directors, in a Dairy Defined Podcast released today. “When you start trying to protect against organisms that you can't see, that puts you in a whole different ballpark,” said Jordan, who also raises about 200 dairy cattle in Siler City, NC. “The bright side is, we've got a disease that we don't have dead animals. We do have an economic disruption, severely. But this gives us an opportunity to really take a hard look at our farms and see what that biosecurity really needs to look like and then how we really enhance it.”  Jordan is joined in the podcast by NMPF's Chief Science Officer, Jamie Jonker, who is leading NMPF's HPAI response.

Welcome to the Property Management Mastermind Show with your host, Brad Larsen. Today we are talking to three participants of the Manager's Round Table, and they will talk about some details of what they learned and how it worked for them and get a feel for what we can potentially improve on to make it a better system.   Manager's Round Table is a platform we created because we identified a need for a mastermind. Because it's a lot easier said than done, we created this platform where we have facilitators that organize the group and go through checklists of items they want to talk about in a group format twice a month.   Listen as David shares his two key takeaways from the round table, including a resident benefits package and a discussion on an owner's manual. They challenged Karen to benchmark where her competitors are and an owner's zoom call she is implementing quarterly. Brian was excited about the SWOT analysis he went through with the group and ways to earn more revenue for his business.   David, Karen, and Brian discuss some other lessons learned during the round tables and discuss continuing the format from now on as Brian says, why wait until a conference to improve your business when you can go to a round table every two weeks and bring something back to implement.   **Announcement** The Property Management Mastermind Conference is May 19-21 at the Gaylord Resort in Grapevine, TX   In this episode: [03:15] Welcome to the show, Karen, David, and Brian! [03:36] David introduces himself and his business in Phoenix. [04:32] Karen shares who she is and her business in California. [05:12] Brian from San Antonio speaks about who he is and his business. [12:41] Karen says they challenged her to benchmark where her competitors were, [13:28] Brad talks about secret shoppers and the benefits of it. [15:05] What did you discover in your marketplace that made you want to change what you were doing? [16:30] they also challenged Karen to review their expenses every quarter. [18:23] Karen talks about an owner's zoom call that she did that she will implement once a quarter. [19:45] Brian discusses the SWOT analysis that he was a part of in the group. [20:42] Scott pushed them to look at their businesses and see where they add more revenue. [22:07] What did you see as some benefits that came out of the group? [24:21] Brad speaks about the feedback they got from the residents' benefits package. [25:37] Brad discusses the issues they had during snowmageddon they had in San Antonio. [26:44] Karen shares why her group at the round table is fun, especially with the accountability Deb expects. [29:12] David says the biggest thing for him was going there with the intent to share and the more vulnerable atmosphere where everyone shared. Tending Your Dreams

Tending Your Dreams

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 8, 2019 30:10

What happens when you lose your momentum? Life can change in a hurry, bringing your dreams to a screeching halt. It’s in these times, when we often need to find a safe place.  In author, Karen Jordan’s case, her dream collided with her husband’s, when he retired. As she put it, “Their collision was more like a shipwreck.”  Because of dealing with years of intensity in the job he was leaving, Karen’s husband was close to burn-out, he was chronically stressed, and wanted to do nothing more than go to a lake with his wife, so he could relax and stare at the water. But Karen was in a place where she needed the opposite. With momentum building in her writing career, she needed to get to work. She needed a place with internet, and quiet space to focus. In that season, their needs were not aligning—they were at 180 degree odds. Sometimes, the conflict described between this husband and wife doesn’t always come in two bodies, dream-tenders can feel that kind of collision paralleling in us. We can feel a spark of our dreams left, but that’s it. One part of us longs for rest, refreshment, and rejuvenation, while at the same time our mind is screaming, “I need to work. I need to be doing something productive. I. Need. The. Internet!” This scenario drives home the point of the proverb that says, “As iron sharpens iron, so does one person sharpen another.” There’s no doubt that Karen was learning and growing through the process of tending her dreams in spite of this challenge, but it was painful nonetheless.   Filling Needs: Are you conflicted by people who don’t understand your passions and goals? How do you protect your dream while protecting your relationships in a place of frustration? Where is your safe place when the momentum of your dreams is threatened? Don’t allow a challenge to mushroom into a crisis. Expect difficulties, and understand that growth comes through adversity, but though your momentum may temporarily halt, do not allow it to cause you to give up. Get B.A.C.K. at it. Breathe. Assess. Collect. Kickstart.    This episode’s Dream Planting Tips: Be honest about your dream-tending needs with those you love, clearly, respectfully, and firmly—and at an appropriate time. Cool down, never express yourself when you’re angry. Accept your emotions as a natural part of the dream-tending process. Remember that our dreams don’t always show up the way we want them to. Fear and frustration are inevitable at times, but acknowledging and accepting that fact, can get you back on track. If you feel like your dream is in jeopardy, it’s natural to feel defensive, but be careful not to hurt others as you figure out how to alter your course, and keep moving forward. Sometimes you need to close your lips until you are in a better frame of mind for discussion. Look in the mirror, as you express your true feelings in this moment. How would you respond to this person? What can you learn from looking them in the eyes? If you feel a ship-wreck has thrown your dream against the reefs of life, don’t quit. Put the pieces back together, and lean into the peace-maker, Jesus. Get off to yourself, just you and your dream, whenever possible, to retreat, re-evaluate, and restore your energy. Inspire yourself by reading Karen’s book, Words That Change Everything. Remember this fact: if dream-tending truly was easy, everyone would be out there doing it, but they’re not. Dare to become one of the few who acts in spite of life’s conflicts. Tending Your Dreams
ep005 - Karen Jordan the Power of Storytelling

Tending Your Dreams

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 12, 2018 26:44

Karen Jordan, national speaker and published author of the book, Words That Change Everything, encourages others to tell their stories. Through personal experience, and her work with others as a writing instructor and speaker, Karen shows people how to tap into the healing power of writing, as she teaches them to tell the stories that matter the most. Karen tells of a young woman who sat in one of her classes. The woman had been the victim of long-term abuse, and over time, Karen helped the woman garner the courage to share her heart-rending story with the class. Karen said, “Everyone was just crying. She came up to me after the class and thanked me. She said it was the first time she’d ever told her story, and she told it to a whole classroom of strangers. I could just sense the healing that took place in her.” Telling stories helps people process their emotions, so they can look at their own situations more objectively and factually. Dealing with emotions in a healthy way is important for anyone who hopes to tend a dream, whether your dream is writing, singing, painting, having a happy marriage, or anything else. When asked what she would tell her younger self, Karen said, “First, I would say don’t get discouraged and don’t give up. A lot of authors and writers weren’t published until they were in their sixties or seventies.” She recounts several famous authors who didn’t succeed until later in life. When you share your stories and encourage others to tell you theirs, a shared healing takes place. How can you use your stories to help others? Some of the most powerful gifts we have to offer others is to let them know they matter, at least to one other human being. Never discount your word of encouragement—not only will it help someone else, but in turn, it could come full circle to help you in your own dream tending efforts. Filling Needs: How can your story make you relatable to other people, and help them fill their needs? When someone is struggling or in conflict, encourage them to write out advice, ideas, and thoughts, as if they were giving it to someone else. What would they tell someone else to do in a similar situation? How can you pass on the lessons you’ve learned? This episode’s Dream Planting Tips: Remember that stories are the most powerful form of communication. Allow storytelling to help you vent a build-up of pent-up emotions. Pass on the lessons you’ve learned to help others. Speak encouragement to yourself regularly. Encourage others, we all need a lift sometimes. Life circumstances will get in the way of your dreams, but don’t allow temporary disruptions to become permanent roadblocks. Prune those things associated with tending your dreams, that are not bearing fruit. Don’t let unnecessary leaves block the sunlight necessary for your dreams to grow. Don’t forget that dream tending is a long-haul process. You have to deal with all the things you’ve always dealt with, plus the added responsibilities that come with making your dreams come true, and maintaining them when you do. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Yes, you need to push, but if you take it too far, you could break your own spirit. Understand that others in your life may not understand what you are going through. Show them grace. Don’t forget to maintain gratitude for the dream tending you “get to do.” Statistically, people who have an active faith in God or a Higher Power, are more successful in making their dreams come true. Don’t take your family and friends for granted. Tending your relationships make your dreams brighter and your life richer. N. Tyler YoungPhoto by Jim Snyder Local cyclist, Tyler Young, is the leader of the Great Ride Series bike rides from Stockton's Performance Bicycles in Lincoln Center. More than just a cyclist or ride leader, Tyler is one of the most well known cyclists in Stockton. His dedication to his riders is unparalleled. He started cycling again just a few years ago and used it to lose weight and get back in shape. Since then, he has used his passion for riding to encourage people all over Stockton to get out on their bikes.Every Saturday, Tyler leads a ride from the Performance store. A family-friendly ride that often gets up to 50 riders, Tyler takes his fellow cyclists through north Stockton neighborhoods and on to the Calaveras bike path before heading to University of the Pacific and the turn-around point at Starbucks on the Miracle Mile. “He doesn’t care if you’re slow or fast, he just wants you to be there.” — Kiel Penrod, local cyclist To get an idea of what Tyler means to local cyclists, I spoke with a few of his riders, Kelly Rose, Kiel Penrod and Karen Jordan, during a recent Saturday morning ride. “I push myself to show up because of Tyler. This has become a big part of my life.” — Karen Jordan, local cyclist Tyler's impact on local cyclists is clear. Talk to any of his riders and they will tell you he is the reason they continue to get out on their bike. Tyler has a ride for all cyclists, no matter what "tribe" they belong to. His Saturday rides have every level of cyclist, from families riding with small children to die-hard lycra-clad road cyclists. He also leads a weekly mountain bike specific ride and a Sunday road bike specific ride of varying distances.Be sure to check out his ride schedule on Meetup and look for him and the rest of his riders on Strava. Here's a video from a recent Saturday ride.Follow Tyler on Instagram, @roguefreeman.The music for episode 103 is "Calaveras Super Highway" by Michael Klooster & Ernest B. Mancuso, featuring Justin Anderson. There is a new podcast in town, Fat City Establishment. Their first episode was released last week and focuses on Stockton politics. Stockton needs more independent voices and we are excited to have a new show in town. Congratulations to Fat City Establishment on their inaugural show.
