Taal turns 25 years old because Time is an illusion. Taal is the filmiest of filmy films, with a seriously OTT Anil, diva-like Aishwarya, and Akshaye being sensible lover boy. There is a lot of rain, some talk of tyaag and izzat, snooty rich people, a cute mop of a dog, and an unholy amount of sequins and razzle dazzle. A R Rahman delivers an absolutely epic score that is choreographed to perfection, and director Subhash Ghai was maybe a total genius by letting him and everyone else on this crew just do their magic. Sahir and his love for the country knows no bounds. He will always be remmebered for writing works like this. With the same intensity and his love for the nation and his vision for equality amongst all differentiating factors, he wrote "Tu Hindu Baenga Na Musalman Banega". I love to think that he is talking to a newborn and telling baout the demarcations of religion, whilst mentioning that there is a beacon of hope and pride that belongs to this country which has to be taken ahead by the future generation. Sahir, you beauty

A R Rahman composed a beautiful music for this song in Ponniyin Selvan. With singer Harini's voice, it is just so divine. A.R. Rahman's early life, marked by personal loss and perseverance, served as a catalyst for his musical genius and set the stage for his unparalleled success as one of the most beloved musicians of our time. At the age of nine, Rahman began supporting his family by playing the keyboard in orchestras and working as a session musician. Catching the attention of renowned Indian film directors, Rahman began scoring for cinema, and his soundtracks became massive hits. Since then, Rahman has scored over 150 films, has won multiple Oscars, Grammys, numerous other awards and has collaborated with talent across the globe including Michael Jackson, Mick Jagger, and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. Involved with numerous charitable causes, in 2009 Rahman founded the Sunshine Orchestra, India's first youth symphony for economically and socially disadvantaged children that receive free music education from his KM Music Conservatory.

Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan Part 1 released a little over a week ago and has taken the box office by storm. A critical and commercial success, the film has attracted a wide demographic to the theatres. Largely due to its source - Kalki R. Krishnamurthy's serialized novel Ponniyin Selvan published in the 1950s, a historical fiction based on the Cholas and the conflicts within and outside the kingdom for the throne. The film, like most Mani Ratnam films, is also an example of technical mastery which is one of the attractions for widespread theatre viewing with almost no one choosing to wait for the streaming release like it is the norm of late. The film is star studded - Karthi, Aishwarya Rai, Vikram, Trisha, Jayam Ravi, Jayaram, Sobhita Dhulipala, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sarath Kumar, Parthiban, Prabhu, Lal, Prakash Raj and more. There are stars behind the camera as well apart from the director and writing team (Mani Ratnam, Jeyamohan and Elango Kumaravel). It is edited by Sreekar Prasad, art direction by Thotta Tharani with cinematography by Ravi Varman. Music is by A.R Rahman and sound design by Anand Krishnamoorthi. Foley Artist is Prathap and re-recording mix by Craig Mann. In this episode, we talk about one aspect of the technical mastery - sound design. Sound Designer/Engineer/Editor Anand Krishnamoorthi joins Aditya and Ashoka to talk about the sound of Ponniyin Selvan Part 1 and the nuances in the art of sound design. We talk about sound design in general in cinema as well as the work that has gone into Ponniyin Selvan. Anand gives both eli5 explanations for some aspects of his work and also some nerdy and deeply technical things that go into a film's sound. Listen on. Not the big fancy sporting hubs of Chennai or Delhi, but a town famous for its tourism and historical spectacles, Mamallapuram is hosting the Chess Olympiad. Located about 50-km from Chennai, this is the second big event the Tamil Nadu's coastal town has anchored in recent times. The first being a political one -- an informal summit between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping two years ago. Mamallapuram's excellent transport connectivity, handful of luxury star hotels and resorts with beach facing rooms to incorporate influx of VVIPs, and the historical importance worked in favour of the seaport town. Also the relatively calmer environment, as compared to the big cities, meant that players, after the games, would relax in the lap of nature. After the event was pulled out of Russia due to the Ukraine war, the All India Chess Federation (AICF) sniffed an opportunity. With no financial backing or sponsors at the time, the federation went out of its way to show its interest in hosting the event. But, to host an international event of such a scale-- that usually takes years to organise-- the AICF was racing against the time. This is where the state and central government authorities stepped in. The Tamil Nadu government backed the federation by guaranteeing $10 million to put up a bid in the first place. Together, the state and the centre have allocated Rs 100 crore for the event. The Central ministries wasted no time in clearing the visas for players from over 180 countries. India's international standing in the world of chess also helped. In the last eight years, Indian chess grandmasters have more than doubled to 75. India has the world's largest chess-playing population with 33,000 internationally rated players. Despite several controversies and infightings, the Chess federation came out with flying colours in a nurturing long-term Chess ecosystem. The 44th edition of the Chess Olympiad, which is held every two years, has a record participation with 343 teams from 187 countries. Six Indian teams are competing in the Olympiad – three in each section. Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand opted not to play in the Olympiad and has taken over the mentor role for youngsters in the Indian side. To accommodate over 2,000 players in the mix, the national chess Federation moved proactively at breakneck speed to rope in major sponsors. In addition, the AICF worked out subsidies for national federations, which lacked the resources to send teams. Several international players have taken to social media platforms to laud the arrangements. The organisers have also pulled out all stops and went on a marketing blitzkrieg in making the Olympiad a success and also to take the event deep into India and around the world. Chennai with the iconic Napier Bridge wearing chequered back and white look, a spectacle of an opening ceremony involving A R Rahman and Rajinikanth was held and a ubiquitous mascot Thambi, with folded-hand greetings, is featured everywhere from milk packets to billboards. The sponsors and authorities were also a step ahead by adopting new technologies like virtual reality and artificial intelligence to give an immersive experience to the fans. Tech Mahindra has launched Fan Nxt where users can track the board moves of top players in the event. A successful Chess Olympiad will for sure put India on a high pedestal, showcasing its abilities to host such events of scale, and hopefully more such events will follow. It will also help make chess become more mainstream.

“Jazz is a special genre”, here's why.. Jazz requires special love, attention… PASSION! Jazz has a thin melody; that's the core tune of the song, the part you're most likely to remember to humm or sing. It has harmony, the notes that make the melody sound fuller. It has rhythm, which is the heartbeat of the song. But what sets jazz apart is improvisation. Crazy improvisation! Jazz has the right high, low, long, short, gravelly and clear flow of tempo! In this episode of Pattukkaaran Podcast, I talk about some brilliant Jazz numbers by Isai Puyal "A R Rahman" :) I hope you enjoy this one. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pattukkaaran/support
A look back at A R Rahman of 90s with popular music blogger and Rahman super-fan, Karthik Srinivasan. We revisit 16 songs from 90s, curated with the singular goal of showcasing what made Rahman of 90s so unique and special. The collection includes songs in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu and Malayalam. We've tried to stay clear of Rahman anthems in the interest of maintaining a HIGH 'discovery factor' for most listeners. We also chatted about everything from our first impressions of Roja to Rahman's legacy. Karthik helped us unpack Rahman's generational impact, and how back in the 90s, he repeatedly and consistently broke away from every existing film music idiom. Rianjali started singing when she was just 6. Her father, a well-known Bengali singer made sure she grew up listening to music all her life! She started taking classical Indian music classes and then picked up the guitar when she was 14 or 15 years old. She went to LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, which really changed her life. It was a very tough school where she was surrounded by all kinds of music and had to learn so many styles. It was there where she really picked up some of her American music influence, Her brother was part of a fraternity in college, and he introduced her to one of his friends in his frat who also had a passion for music. His parents were really supportive and had built a makeshift recording studio in his house. A couple of years after she first met her brother's friend, they ended up writing a song together and put it on SoundCloud. It turned out that the friend's family had known A.R Rahman for over 15 years, but he had never told her out of a matter of privacy. One day, her friend called her out of the blue and asked her if she was free the next day because A.R. Rahman wanted to meet her! A.R. had apparently asked her friend if he had worked on any new music lately, so he showed him their SoundCloud track. A.R. then asked him who the female vocalist was. The rest is history!Hear our chat with her hereDownload it at podcast.desis.live
